Special feelings

Hi guys, ran out of time today, so here's a quickie...

The specials we are currently considering are -

MOJO

He's top of the polls and has a detail and uniqueness all of his own. Yes we understand there could be breakage problems, but hopefully we can improve the packaging somehow. We would have to use the biggest base size and cleverly attach a join between the base and his undercarriage (to achieve stability etc). Also his legs may have to curl around the sides of the base (because of his huge surface area). If done correctly this could be an awesome figurine.

GIANT-MAN

This is Kev Hopgood's sketch of how we could do him - The added Wall detail allows for his stance to be more dynamic. I think this choice would do well with non-CMFC collector's, yet still please the fanbase.

Both these figurines would be in the £18-20 range (don't quote me on that!). If our marketing department want a cheaper alternative then we might consider someone like Terrax (although popular with the fanbase, not so with the wider world.)

All these specials are still in the planning stage and I have previewed them much earlier than usual, just because I love you guys! (and we value your opinions!)

THESE ARE NOT THE OFFICIAL EM CHOICES FOR THE NEXT SPECIALS, JUST IDEAS AT THE MOMENT.

COMPETITION CHOICE...

CONSTRICTOR

Should make a fine addition.

One last thing. Trying to come up with a pose for Shaman that hasn't been done before and isn't boring, is proving pretty tricky - we did consider doing him crossed legs levitating in meditation (but he would have to have a clear peg up his bottom, so we ruled that out), so I came up with an image (badly drawn I know!) of him summoning up the ancient gods of Canada type thing - I'm sure the sculptors can give him more presence and bring it to life. Any haters?

Anyway must dash. Have a smashing weekend.

I'm the polar opposite of most CMFC collectors in not being a 'proper' comic fan.

I expect to hear cries of Blasphemy at times but its good to offer opinions from out of the 'usual fans' comfort zone.

Spending more time here and on the forum is changing me, admittedly slowly :)

I used to skim the mags look at the pictures and put them in the binders.

I'm reading them as of now, and enjoying them. Written with humour that make's me grin at times.

I was surprised to read about Odin's involvement with the Headband.

I still wish the figurine had the Mind Gem.

You read comicbooks as a kid, Toon, so it's not as if you came on board not knowing what Marvel was all about. There is at least one CMFC collector who has never read comics - well, he has read two. The only time I get annoyed with folk who don't know their history is when they vote in a poll and that poll dictates that everyone gets short-lived or ten-minute old incarnations of characters. It happened with Drax and Balder and we dodged a bullet with Gamora. Thankfully, Dan is better informed than the bulk of the forum voters.

I agree with your comments about the magazine. It's informative, interesting and doesn't take itself too seriously. Sometimes condensing decades of continuity into a few hundred words unavoidably results in a nearly incomprehensible muddle, though. Slightly embarrassed to admit that if I had won the comp, I was going to ask if I could send in my thoughts on the Recorder...

Not everyone has the same tastes as you Robert. Deal with it. Just because some people prefer more modern incarnations of a character it doesn't make them wrong or misinformed and your opinion isn't always the right one.

Personally I get annoyed when older collectors tell younger collectors that characters must be done as they remember them and anyone who disagrees is wrong or doesn't like Marvel as much.

And as for the Gamora travesty, all that tells me is that Dan doesn't care what the majority of collectors want and allowed a few people on this blog to get their way just because they whinged a bit. And now we're all going to end up with a character in a horribly dated costume that will look awful because of lots of cuts in the body of it.

Let's take a short while to reflect in silence those heroes who did not manage to dodge the bullit.
The roll call of pish
1 Captain Chris AHOY!! Give us the proper Cap Britain naw yon guff!!
2 Nondescript bint in an overcoat give us Rogue
3 We wanted Beast they gave us Bungle fae Rainbow.
4 Classic beautiful Havoc anyone ? naw, let's give them some Ben 10 shite instead.
5 Classic Drax..Pfaw you don't want that, here have gay martian pornstar Drax instead.....let's remember those poor heroes who were so sadly let down

Aw man thats awful tell me where can i find a pic of the Gamora sculpt??

It's nothing to do with taste, Spidey. We are going to get Gamora in the costume she wore longest and in most of her appearances, the original costume she wore in her most iconic appearances (the original Starlin run) and in her most high-profile appearances (The Infinity trilogy and related series). The forum ignored all of that. Or were ignorant of it. Or both.

4 of those 'pish' characters you mentioned ted were Eaglemoss decisions (maybe or maybe not with some input from Marvel). Yep, they're so much better informed than us mere collectors. At the very least if Beast and Rogue had gone to a vote I'm 99.9% certain that we wouldn't have the rubbish on our shelves that we do have. Oh, actually we probably would because Eaglemoss would have just ignored us.

@Robert - they weren't ignorant of it or ignored it. People chose the costume that represented the Gamora that was relevant to them, it just happened that was different to what you wanted and was relevant to you. People are always going to have different wants, the best you can do is cater to what will please the most people. Sadly, a few selfish blog members felt so entitled and whinged so much about the forum not being representational that Dan bizarrely sided with an infinitely less representaional few people on here.

Spidey 1979: Were you half asleep when you read Robert's comments? At no given time did he state that all those that do not think like he does or does not have the same tastes as he,are misinformed or wrong.

As for all older members telling younger members that the heroes should be done how they remember him/her,I'll have you know that I would have preferred Dazzler done in her X-Men days costume rather than her original one,but the truth is that many of the heroes look better in their traditional garbs than in updated modern ones.(Especially many of the females whom look more like Playboy Pinups than heroines).

About your comment that Dan does not care what the majority wants: I for one ask;Whom may that 'majority' be? A few crybaby members of the blog and the forum whom can't get over the fact that they did not get what THEY wanted. I suggest you follow your own suggestion to Robert and learn to 'DEAL WITH IT".

I believe Dan cares more than enough about our input and comments, and he's done an excellent job. Cheers Dan.

Spidey baby,I think i finally see the truth ,The blog is EVIL!! the forum is our only hope,
No offence my gullible chum but your a cold calling Jehova Witnesses wet dream

Drax was voted for on the Forum, and he was done according to what "the majority of the voters wanted.Today 90% or more of the feedback given on this figurine is negative big time.

Maddrox was voted for on the forum, and he also was done in the look the majority of the voters wanted, and he also has gotten a lot of negative feedback.

It's sounds kind of hypocritical for you to call other members selfish because they "whinged so much" and here you are doing the same thing

Robert said...

I see where you're coming from when you talk about what is relevant to each individual collector, Spidey. I think the issue is bigger than that.

The original Captain Britain is the Cap I wanted. However, the costume in which he is best known, the costume he's worn the longest, the costume he wore when Moore was writing him, etc. is the one we got. So, no complaints from me on that score. A logical choice. (I'd like a variant. of course, but that's not the same as disagreeing with the reasoning behind the costume choice we got.)

Using the same criteria - number of appearances, longevity, profile of appearances, etc. - we should get a classic Gamora, which we will. Another logical choice.

It's not about catering to the individual tastes of the forum or blog or some whinging oldies, it's about a balanced view of a character's totality.

spidey_1979 said...

He clearly stated that Dan is better informed than the bulk of forum voters. Thereby suggesting the bulk of forum voters are misinformed. And by saying that he got annoyed by the Balder and Drax we got which weren't the ones he wanted because the voters do not know their history he is saying that those voters were wrong.

And at least the forum guys had good reason to get annoyed about the Gamora decision. Dan overturned a pretty convincing result. Had classic Gamora actually won then not much would have been said about it. Unlike the one or two members of the blog who went on and on about how unfair it was when modern Gamora won until they got their own way.

And I had been dealing with it. I hadn't brought Gamora up since the whole sorry saga. Robert was the one who brought it up again by criticising the forum choices and questioning the Marvel knowledge of collectors who had voted, in the majority, for modern Gamora.

spidey_1979 said...

I called them selfish because they whinged about a majority result until the decision was reversed. If classic Gamora had won the vote I would have been annoyed but would have gone along with it. And as previously stated, I'm only mentioning Gamora agin now because of Robert bringing it up and questioning the knowledge of people who voted for the modern version.

Also, you're bound to get more negative feedback than positive. People who don't like something are always going to be much more vocal than people who do. I've seen more negative feedback than positive for nearly all of the figures in the collection.

Robert said...

Sorry, Thor, but Spidey picked me up correctly. I'd only quibble with his interpretation in minor points. (I think some of the forum are "ill-informed", not "misinformed".) Looking at the argument for classic Gamora, I can't see any other conclusion than it was the most representative costume for that character. Any other opinion seems to ignore the supporting facts. I know that more than a few people said they had not read anything with Gamora in it except the Annihilation stuff: ergo, that is uninformed.

Dan did not change his mind because I and a few others whinged about it. We disagreed and complained because it was ignoring the character's history.

Deja vu! The battle over the Gamora decision!!

In this oldie's opinion 1) You pick the costume for the character he or she is most identified with. 2) Does the costume look good when brought to lead life.

Admittedly some characters have a look that works for them & does not change much if at all except for an artist's or colorist's flourish here or there hence characters like HAMMERHEAD, THE OWL, SHAMAN, STINGRAY, SWORDSMAN & the just picked CONSTRICTOR have their unique & therefore obvious choice looks.

Others have multiple looks that can make a decision less clear. When the vote for the BEETLE'S costume was done while I had voted for the original because I thought it would look best the second costume choice was not a bad one because I liked it to I just thought the original would look better in lead.

Then you have characters who for the most part looked one way generally pre 2000 & then are revamped with a very different look post 2000 i.e. the DRAX & BEAST & GAMORA & MOONSTONE costume decision discussions okay arguments.
Being an oldie I would go for the longer known pre 2000 look unless the post 2000 look was just such an impression reworking that it would look better in lead but that is rarely the case.

Sorry, one off-topic comment, then I'm back off the blog. I immediately thought of Robert when I read this. Its taken from SHH's coverage of the Avengers movie panel at the NYCC:

"Clark Gregg name-checked Jim Starlin's Warlock as his own favorite superhero...nice one, Clark! Great taste in comics!"

Robert said...

Clark Gregg, not only a great actor but has great taste, too! Thanks, John. I read something about the Avengers movie the other day that had me smiling for an hour. Apparently, when Chris Helmsworth organised a trip to the local bar, he texted "Avengers Assemble" to all the other cast members! Brilliant. I just loved that.

As for the Warlock stories, two of the guys who wrote some of the Annihilation issues - Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning - have stated that Starlin's original run on Warlock is the best cosmic storyline ever produced by Marvel. So, even the guys writing it know it's inferior.

John, why do you feel the need to leave? It was thoughtful of you to come on and let me know that titbit. Like the doddery old aunt who knits ugly dolls, I'd love you to visit more... ;)

tinodragon14 said...

Yes Gregg is a fine actor & I look forward to his appearances in the Marvel movies. I think he spells it Hemsworth.

Robert said...

I stand corrected. I wasn't sure if that was the right spelling and was too lazy to check.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Surely the most correct spelling
is Helmetsworth.
Ha? See what I did here?

Robert said...

Yep, but surely "Hammerworthy" is even closer to the truth?

sed tallis said...

I wonder how some movie franchises would have fared if the actors who were originaly offered the roles had accepted the part. Tom Selleck famously turned down the role of Indiana Jones as he had just signed up to play Magnum P.I.
Scottish actor Dougray Scott turned down the role of Wolverine in the first X-Men movie as he had signed up for Mission Impossible 2.
And perhaps most intriguing of all, what if Bruce Forsyth had accepted the part of Johnny Blaze instead of signing up to Strictly come Dancing..???,if only.

Robert said...

I heard about that quite recently, Ted. When Brucie used his powers to create his hellfire motorcycle, he exclaimed, "Nice to see you, to see you, nice!"

sed tallis said...

I saw some rare footage of early rehearsals, When Brucie's character challenges Mephisto to a single draw of cards, highest value wins, the stakes?... Johnny Blazes soul!!
Mephisto pulls the Queen of diamonds. Brucie, looks right down the camera lense and asks "Higher?,higher or lower than a queen?"
It's the movie the fans deserved. DAMN YOU STRICTLY, DAMN YOU ALL TA HELL!!!!

Robert said...

The ending was pretty exciting. Loads of doomsday weaponry went along a conveyor belt and Brucie/ Johnny had to remember them all. "Wand of Watoomb, Evil Eye, Infinity Gauntlet, Ultimate Nullifier, Casket of Ancient Winters..." He forgets the Cosmic Cube and Mephisto curses him forever.

Wife away at her folks, so Strictly-free weekend for me. Bliss.

This may be a case of raking over cold coals, but the recent posts have prompted me to point out what I believe is a very salient and ironic fact. That is, when the recent(ish) mini-series 'The Thanos Imperative'came to a close, and poor old Drax bit the big one for the umpteenth time, he wasn't in his inter-galactic, generic porn-star attire, BUT in a modernized version of the classic Starlin-look. which just goes to show that even the powers that be at marvel had finally come round and realised that Draxy-Baby needed a more iconic image again...course, by that time the boat had already sailed, and we ended up with the 'flavour of the month' version we've got now...There's something to be said for 'classic'- it always has a way of coming round again...

BD

..and BTW, I'm not opposed to newer costumes on principal at all. Personally one of the best re-vamps of any character has to be Ghost. He's new Thunderbolts design is extremely original, and fits his personality to a tee. To me this IS a 'classic' look, albeit a modern one. Same can be said for Ares re-vamped design...

sed tallis said...

Not a lot of people know that the Carry on cast were huge comic geeks, They were due to film "Carry on Mutating" in 1973, Sid James was Professor X, Charles Haughtry as Cyclops. Barbara Windsor as Jean Grey, Marvel pulled the plug at the last minute.
They had concerns about Sid James rampant sex pest portrayal of Xaivier.

with this week's

VIRTUAL CMFC GALLERY UPDATE

including
1. Kaine, a tragic spidey villain who's become a classic
and has wicked wicked looks.

2. Phantom Rider, for me the only truly iconic Western character, and one hell of a fab figurine.

3. Fixer, a much needed next Thunderbolts fix.

4. Box, an Alpha Flight who packs quite a visual punch.

5. Spitfire, a hot choice for an Invaders representative.

6. The Uranian, a great Agent of Atlas with distinctive design and a Golden Age pedigree.

7. Cortez, surely one of the best candidates to represent the Acolytes.

Just imagine how awesome they'd be in the CMFC. Check'em out here:

Another set of nice figures in your virtual gallery there! I really like the Kaine one. Kaine is one of my Spidey wants for the collection but I was gonna wait until we get Jackal, Tombstone and Molten Man confirmed before I began protesting for him. Still I would be happy if he appeared regardless.
