Blog 9 from Outer Space

Controversy Explained (well, an attempt at it)...
Last week I mentioned I was hopeful of putting through a rather controversial character, that character as many of you guessed was indeed Howard the Duck.
The reason I called him controversial (as well as the “Marmite” effect) was that we had a sticky situation with the Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite figurine over on the DC collection: Sven the editor chose to commission the sculpt, but it was decided at a senior level that the characters’ style didn’t fit with the rest of the collection. So to cut a long story short we eventually got the go ahead to make them a special. (I actually think it does make a rather nice special in the end - see pic.)

That leads us rather clumsily to the Duck! After Mr. Mixedpickles and Mar-Mite set a precedent at EM on these type of ‘cartoony’ characters, we felt we should check with our superiors before announcing/commissioning the Duck – we were correct in our assumptions, and we were indeed told that the duck would not ‘fit in’ with the collection.

As much as I disagree with the decision, we all have to accept the fact that Howard won’t be appearing in the regular running order any time soon, but we can make him a special! If this can be done remains to be seen, but at least there is a slight chance we can get him in the collection (although at the loss of another special) – but for now he’s going back in the drawer filed under ‘Cancelled Canard’.

The good news is that opens up another place for someone else! So get canvassing now.

Not much alse to show this week accept an almost final Swordsman (Didn’t notice his moustache was incorrect, so we’ll be changing it to a more french-style thin one).

So on that bombshell the next 2 confirmed players will be:

The cosmic Guardian of the Galaxy: Vance Astro

(I await your opinions on what costume he should wear and if he should have the shield or not?)

And the futuristic Spider-Man 2099

(I suppose with the loss of Howard we can assume this fella is the curveball of the extension - as he will be that rarity in our collection of an alternative reality character (although he is supposed to be of Earth 616 albeit in the future.), obviously he also fits into the Spidey category aswell.

PS, I have been summoned by the guys who did the Spirit of Hope book (The Comic Book Alliance) to a signing tomorrow at Forbidden Planet Shaftesbury Ave. at 1pm (I had a small part to play in the design and some colouring), so feel free to stop by and say hello (or buy a book - we'll even reduce its value and sign it!)

Th-th-th-th-that's all folks!

bagman : i when i said limited edition i wasn't talking numbers. Eaglemoss would make as many as were ordered. Call it something else if you wish. I was just trying to keep howard away from the regular line up but still give the fans their howard. Other businesses like f/p would probably do the same , take orders from customers and then order from eaglemoss. It may take time but i'm sure that the duck fans won't mind the wait as long as they eventually get their howard.

LAWay said...

Happy birthday SV!

Bagman...again, like MT says. It wouldnt be restricted to numbers, and it it was, surely they would make it available for every subscriber, only limiting the number of figurines to the number of subscribers.

Since subscriber numbers grow, the easier option would just offer it to subscribers. Like Robert said, if you are in the UK and choose not to subscribe, it would be your own fault.

I worry about the faith FP has in the product. They seem to sell alot judging by their charts, but like you said, whenever I am in store, the shelves are full...with old figurines just as much as new.

I know its 'unfair' based on people's geography that they cant subscribe, but you cant offer everyone the same thing. The collection is a core UK product. Alot of marvel merchandise doesnt come out in the UK either. Its unfair, but like yourselves, we have to buy from the US and through eBay. If your local shop can't order them because of the 'subscriber' only free gift offer or whatever, then you will just have to buy from eBay like the rest of the world does with US products.

I have said it before, but US offer similar subscriptions and competitions that are limited to US customers. You cant have it all your own way.

Haha I love you guys, thanks for all the early birthday wishes...but my birthday is tomorrow :P

Sorry to appear to be harping on about this, but what i'm getting at is, isn't it in EM's best interest to have as big a subscriber pool as possible? I've said before surely with all the technology that is available today a way could be found to offer subscriptions to international collectors.
And yes i've used e-bay to get things from the UK and US that are unavailable here in Australia,my choice of course, but wouldn't the money be better going to the EM coffers?
Maybe something for the suits to think about?
Anyway i can live in hope.... that one day i too can get a subby pack.
O.k., i think i'll give it a rest now, thanks for the input fellas it's always good to toss ideas about.
So did anyone get a look at the cosplay Goblin Queen at SDCC?

John said...

Do you have a link to the specific Goblin Queen? I tried a Google search with weird results...

And SV, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Man!!!

the cost of shipping to other countries is too high , especially to america. And what about damages ? I cancelled my subscription due to getting too many damaged figurines. If that's happening in the u.k you can imagine getting a fing fang foom for example looking like a lego set by the time it reached the u.s.

The Mad Thinker said...

by the way , why are you on this blog requesting characters if you can't even buy them anyway ?

The Mad Thinker said...

anyway , moving on - aren't we due another hulk related character ? I wonder if we get one announced this friday ? Hmmm , i wonder who that could be ?

deamon said...

General Ross

John said...

My #1 Hulk want is General Ross, but that's it. After that, they've got all the main and interesting characters and I'd rather move on to other areas. That's just me though. As a non-Hulk-fan, I feel Ross has casual buyer appeal.

But I truly don't think any other Hulk characters are interesting enough. Daredevil has more visually interesting characters left to do (and I don't read Daredevil either...)

Unless I'm forgetting someone... Hulk list anyone? And Red versions or A-Bomb does NOT appeal to me.

Bagman said...

Mt.,If you'd read my posts carefully i wasn't requesting any characters, i was merely asking if there was a way to make subscription available to everyone.
Also at no time have i said i was unable to buy any figurines.
Oh and by the way why are YOU still on this Blog after some of the stuff you've posted
(short memory SMIFFY?)

mighty_marvel said...

i agree with john and tomasz. if a hulk related character is coming (and one is surely about due) then it has to be general ross

HULK list you said?

I have a huge Hulk wish list...

Arch-E-5912- Warbound
Atalanta - Pantheon
Bi-Beast
Cassiopeia - Pantheon
Clea - Defenders
Devil Slayer - Defenders
Elloe Kaifi - Warbound
Gargoyle - Defenders
General Thunderbolt Ross
Glorian
Gremlin
Grey Gargoyle
Hector - Pantheon
Hiroim - Warbound
Ironclad - U-Foes
Jarella
Kate Waynesboro - Warbound
Maestro
Miek - Warbound
Nightmare
No-Name - Warbound
Rick Jones
Sabra
Savage She hulk (Lyra)
Skaar Son of Hulk
Thundra
Tyrannus
Ulysses - Pantheon
Vapor - U-Foes
Vector - U-Foes
Wendigo
X-Ray - U-Foes

and that's without thinking about it too hard...

Robert said...

Kal, I think from your Hulk list the only one I'd really like is Wendigo. As a kid, I always thought he was a really dangerous and genuinely scarey opponent for the Hulk. Bowen did a wonderful statue of him that captured all his ferocity.

The Pantheon stories are great fun but the likes of Atalanta aren't that visually interesting, really.

As for the Bi-Beast, is that another name for Paibok...?

P.S. Leigh, my last attempt to explain that two wrongs don't make a right fell on deaf ears so let's come at it from another angle. The Americans may not share all their toys but they do share their comicbooks, so the least we can do is share the figures based on those comicbooks, don't you think?

Ken said...

General Ross would be a terrific civilian figurine and Wendigo would make a nice Mega Special!

BUT Dan, we need the High Evolutionary OR Deathbird OR Jigsaw OR Gamora as the next few figurines!

Anonymous said...

No General Ross please!
We've got Sebastian Shaw in Victorian clothes and Hammerhead in a gangster suit. General Ross in military regalia would be overkill. Way too many non-costumed characters in one single extension for me. Sorry guys, but there's only so much reality I can bear.

The Hood said...

I wouldnt mind having General Ross in the collection, but KIRLIANEYES makes a good point, Shaw, Hammerhead, Ross and JJJ all non-costumed characters will look out of place with the colourful superhero characters, in my opinion Howard The Duck fits in more than they do.

HOWARD FOREVER!!!!!

Robert said...

Kingpin is just a fat guy in a suit then. Does he fit in to the collection?

SinisterVenom said...

I think it's more a concern that suited characters are arriving so close together Robert. Kingpin was a while ago where as JJJ is issue 180, with Hammerhead and Sebastian Shaw due out not too long afterwards. Let's say General Ross was confirmed then that would be at least 4 characters in suits in like 20 issues. We do need a bit of variety eh.
SV

mighty_marvel said...

reality?

a guy in victorian clothing and a gangster with a massive forehead brandishing a tommy gun or 2?

yeah you see people like them walking down the street every day.

they may not be in spandex costumes, but they're still clearly not regular everyday people.

general ross would make a fantastic, unique and deserved addition to the collection, but i do think he's more likely to make the next extension than this one.

The Hood said...

General Ross, JJJ, Kingpin etc I'm not against these type of normal looking characters at all, i want as many characters as possible in this collection and that includes civilians. I just think that they dont fit in, the same way that we were told Howard wont fit in. My point is if we start to get lots of civilians then we should be able to get Ducks, Raccoons, Giant Tree Things, Huge Dogs etc !

LAWay said...

Totally understand you Bagman. It would be great if EM could offer subscriptions internationally, and I am sure it would lengthen the collection's lifetime, but unfortunately, for whatever reason, they don't, probably due to expenses. I have no idea how they offer UK subscribers free delivery with the boxes these things come in, so internationally it must be out the question because of this. Big boxes, heavy too. EM couldnt cover those costs, and if the buyer had to, then they would be paying at least double, if not triple of what the figurines cost, just for postage.

But if it is interest of boosting subscribers, EM could look in their own yard in the UK and see what they can offer to get more people to subscribe, like the odd free gift like a figurine or whatever every so often...like once a year?

will check out cosplay hotties. best thing about the cons surely?

Having nixed the Golden Age spot this extension, I will be seeing through on the Horror character this friday (flak jacket please).

Rocker Racoon will probably not be allowed if the EM powers that be want to be consistent. Previous characters that got through in the past like Impossible Man, just weren't spotted by the bosses at the time, but ever since Mr. Mixyplx-gate we are being extra careful to have certain characters okayed (or not) first. It's really not worth angering the gods of EM towers!

I guess a Groot/Rocket Racoon double pack special would be the only way to get the Racoon in.

Having had little involvement in the competition, I'm hoping Rich can do this one aswell! (are you listening Rich?). He did ask me for any ideas on what it should be, and I said "easier than last year".

Is it really necessary to have a horror character? Has the doctor ordered that? Personally I wish we could do without this MU area. Or expand it to inlude some of the darker, supernatural characters - as suggested by some other bloggers. Doctor Voodoo, Baron Mordo or Nightmare would be soooo much better, imo.

Dan... Can I call you Dan?

Rocket is far more beloved and integrated into the MU than Howard is though. He's a major member of the GotG.

So I doubt he'll run into the same issues that Howard The Duck is. Especially since Rocket Raccoon is getting a Marvel Universe figure alongside Star-Lord and Modern Drax. (Modern Drax who's also getting a Marvel Legend figure.) And Rocket Raccon is also going to star in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. To consider him in the same problem league as Howard is silly.

LAWay said...

i hope dan meant he will be killing off the horror section and not announcing ANOTHER character for it. If Howard the Duck and Rocket Raccoon dont fit in, then horror characters who dont appear in modern comics any more should be left alone!

Just look at the links, rocket raccoon as a collectible toy. in an upcoming video game aimed at adult audiences. I mean, I aint a fan of the little git, but if marvel are backing these characters in other areas, then I think they have a better idea on what is popular.

Seriously check out those links I posted. Constrictor, Terrax, classic captain britain, rocket raccoon and many many more. Good year for fans of the toy lines.

And not a horror character in sight.

I gotta disgree on the Rocket Racoon view. As stated he has played a very prominant role in Marvel cosmic and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

He can be sculpted with a large firearm as he is often depicted and I am more than willing to welcome him with Groot in a double pack special.

I would also disagree with Howard the Duck who many can argue might have as much a place in the collection as Dracula.

The great thing about Marvel characters is their diversity and uniqueness which should be embraced...not ignored.

The Mad Thinker said...

modred the mystic would look cool , and gargoyle would be a welcome addition to my defenders display. I hope it's not simon garthuncle the zombie or another werewolf. Jack o lantern would fit into other categories too so he'd be welcome. I look forward to friday's reveal and hope that it's not going to be disappointing again.

Robert from what i could find out it should be released about September, even though it says out now.

John said...

Dan: "Rocker Racoon will probably not be allowed if the EM powers that be want to be consistent."

...really? :(

Again, he's my favorite character not in yet, so that's actually pretty heartbreaking.

I would have thought his inclusion in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom would do wonders for his credibility.

That or his strong fan following, or knowing that Marvel said HUGE things are coming to the Cosmics next year, or his long history, or classic creators tied to him, or the fact that he brings true diversity to the line, or that he's a modern reinvention that could pull in new collectors (as I know this would have definitely hooked me if Shocker hadn't already.)

He's my competition pick in at least an effort to have EM ask Mom and Dad's permission, but otherwise PLEASE give serious consideration to a Double Pack with Groot. I LOVE these characters, and I love my Guardians of the Galaxy. I want these two at least 10 times more than the Agents f Atlas, and you all know how much I want them! PLEASE EM!!!

Robert said...

Thanks, Bagman F.F.F., a.k.a. the World's Greatest Detective.

Oh, CBR Beast, I worry for your sanity. Thanos versus Rocket Raccoon is right up there with Aunt May versus Galactus in the stupidity stakes. At least the latter wasn't intended to be taken seriously - as I seem to recall it was during Assistant Editor's Month or somesuch. There's bad characterisation - Black Cat defeating Sabretooth, Gwen Stacy having sex with Norman Osborn - and then there's a raccoon torturing one of the most dangerous and powerful entities in the universe. It's INCREDIBLY bad. Long story short: NO RACCOON!!

Anonymous said...

Robert, Rocket Raccoon is a tactical genius. And was packing probably the largest weapon he owns at that point. And what he threatened to do to Thanos is exactly what Thanos would respond to. So it works perfectly fine.

Robert said...

Tactical genius or not, we're talking about Thanos, fer cripes' sake! To paraphrase an American General, you can have the best tactics in the world but the big squadron usually defeats the small squadron. And Thanos is VERY, VERY big and Rocket is VERY, VERY small. It's just another example of modern comicbooks going to hell. Bucky never died, Osborn can survive being impaled through the heart and then have a fling with Gwen, Pete and MJ's wedding can be erased, Hulks are popping up like weeds, Thor brings back Loki because he "misses him", need I go on? The loonies are running the asylum and, apparently, there are folk who think that is a good idea. Gob-smacking.

Anonymous said...

having trouble getting on.just making sure.

Paibok said...

Just read Dan's comments... puts Wrecker mag down..

Howard the duck was one thing, I can live with his expulson. But Rocket Racoon, seriously thats a different matter. Rocket is the spirit of the Guardians of the galaxy, he was a major selling point. We see other companies bringing out Rocket Racooon merchandise and appearing in games. I think it would be rather short sighted not to include him.

This however may help Groot. He would have been a hard sell on his own, so I think a double with Rocket Raccoon would benefit both. Please start the ball rolling on this one.

Another option which I quite like is a subset for these small and unique characters for a trial run of say 6/8 with a special like the Blackest night. This way they won't technically be in the collection (even though bases are the same). I would suggest including Howard, Rocket Racoon, Franklin Richards, Leech, Luna and HERBIE with P Pack sepecial. If it works you've proved a point, if it doesn't they have.

Paibok said...

Dan...Just another quick thought, has the recent rejections or animal characters got anything to do with why we haven't had any news on Lockjaw yet?

John said...

Robert, you're making me sad. :(

To be fair, Rocket Raccoon DID point out that the only reason he was able to get the upper hand was that Thanos had just returned from death. That tends to leave people fairly weak, you know?

He also pointed out that he wouldn't be able to kill him, but that he'd put him in a place with eternal life. It logically makes sense from everyone's point of view. Thanos didn't want that, Rocket couldn't do that, and if you're angry that Thanos was doing the bidding of his captors afterward, I'll go ahead and tell you...

Spoilers...

Thanos was doing his own plan the entire time, in an attempt to be reunited with Death.

See? Everything in character.

Now can I please have my favorite character? :(

Robert said...

I appreciate the explanation, John, but now I have to believe that Thanos hatched a plan that involved being humiliated by a rodent?!? Seriously? Two reasons why that's nonsense. One, Thanos's pride. Two, Thanos is a master schemer. He'd have been able to come up with dozens of possible plans that led to the same end. Thanos would have initiated a plan that did not involve his pride being compromised by being tortured by a tree-dwelling furball. I own the comicbook and the threats dished out by Rocket, well, no way that Thanos would have accepted that or put himself in a position where he had to take it. It's just very very bad characterisation that is put there purely to make Rocket look good. It's just stupid beyond words.

John said...

(Looong unrelated post to everybody but Robert. Apologies.)

Robert, let me try to sort this out with an analogy;

I watch the show Dragon Ball Z. In it, my favorite character is an alien by the name of Freiza, the most powerful creature in the entire universe and a HUGE struggle for, what, a hundred episodes?

The character makes short work of every fighter in the show, save for Goku, the main character, and even then it takes some tricky work and good timing on the show's part to get Goku to a point where he can win.

Cut to a few years later, when Freiza comes to Earth looking for revenge, with a cyborg body, and supposedly even stronger than before. A new character, Trunks, comes out of nowhere (from the future) and cuts Freiza in half with a sword. Killing him.

...

Suddenly all my friends think Trunks is the coolest character ever because he's so powerful. I thought it was lazy writing to make the new character look good.

What I'm trying to say, Robert, is that I see where you're coming from. I don't agree, but I can see it. That one action made me HATE Trunks, and as your first encounter with the raccoon was basically that same action, I understand.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Another horror character???....Oh Danny,Dan, Dancey Danster, Are you sure that's a good idea.?..Have you seen the Toad...now that is horrible ennnuf!!!!!
Do yourself a favour and announce the Princess P. I'm sure you have some chums who have been on a cultural tour of Thailand,No doubt they can testify that meeting a lady with a massive python is the very embodiement of horror.
Hey if the Raccoon is in Mvc3 he must be worthy, I've seen his finishing move where he downs Thanos with a sneeky wedgie!!

Robert said...

John, that's an excellent analogy. The Black Cat defeating Sabretooth was an example of the same thing.

I actually first came across Rocket way back in Hulk in the early 1980s (I think). I was grateful it was a single appearance and forgot about him.

Thanos is one of those villains I've followed closely since I first came across him. (Ultron, Galactus and Dr. Doom are the other three I like best.) I struggle with the idea he would hatch such a plan. I forget the exact story, probably the end of the first Thanos War, when Thor or Ben Grimm wrestled with him and Thanos angrily shouted, "Get your hands off me!" He didn't even think an elemental god or super-powered human, let alone a raccoon, should be permitted to touch his skin. I know he has developed over the years - notably over the course of the Infinity trilogy where he eventually ended up a soul gem guardian - but this is pushing credibility too far to say he'd let himself be tortured and, I think worse, taunted and humiliated. Even if he did allow that to happen as part of some grand long-term plan, Thanos would go back later and fry anyone who hurt him. He's that type of mad god!

I guess we'll just have to agree to differ, John. I'll admit I am guilty of getting a bit, um, worked up about this and I'm glad we're still talking. :)

P.S. By the bristling beard of Odin, Trunks is a lame name for a character! Him and his siblings Bikini, Water Wings and Rubber Ring must have taken a helluva slagging at school. Especially Rubber Ring.

The Hood said...

Rocket Raccoon deserves to be part of the collection, but the sad fact is that just like Howard The Duck his look will not fit the collection. So you can give as much detail on his history, and his importance to the Marvel Universe, and as many reasons as you can think of but the reality is unless the management at eaglemoss change their minds we wont see him any time soon. And that is a very sad.

Werewolf By Night for the horror character this week.

mighty_marvel said...

if an anthropomorphic duck and raccoon don't 'fit' the collection then surely neither does an anthropomorphic wolf.

brother voodoo is the obvious choice for a horror/supernatural selection.

John said...

All my rantings about raccoons aside, I do want to say how happy I am that we are getting a Horror character. While I don't really care for any besides the ones already made, I am most excited that we are getting the most diverse collection possible.

Do I like Daredevil? No. But I welcome his villains and allies gladly. Have I ever read Thor? Not an issue, but I really want The Warriors Three. Do I read every issue of Amazing Spider-Man and want more characters than any other grouping? Heck yes I do, but I don't think we should ever have more than 2 per extension.

Its a tough balance to have both the fan favorites and make sure to cover the scope of the MU, but EM are doing a fine job, and I'm really glad they've sat aside a spot for a Horror character this extension, and possibly a Golden Age spot in the next.

I'm hoping for Simon Garth. Though honestly, I don't know exactly who fits into this category and I'm picking 1 of 4 names.

Gremlin in the works said...

Yep I am going to jump on the bandwagon of "What the hell with excluding Rocket". When Marvel ended the cosmic titles last year fan outcry was so much they went ahead and did a Rocket and Grooth mini-series. That say a lot to me of the popularity of the characters.
I get Howard was excluded because he is a comedy character and as such appeals to a certain niche. But Rocket is different. So he is an anthropromorphised animal like the Duck.......but the nature of the characters are radically different and so are their readership.

I hope that the powers-that-be will reconsider on Rocket. Or at least give us the Rocket/Groot double. Or even on a shared base. I don't care I want Rocket in.
I didn't think he would get in for a few extensions yet but now I think a lot of groundwork is going to be needed to get him made.

LAWay said...

My estimations of you went up with the DBZ analogy John. Exactly why I hated Trunks as well when he was introduced.

But horror characters? Do marvel make horror comics anymore? If golden age marvel is dropped, I dont see how this very niche section of marvel that seems unrelated to the superhero universe, gets in.

EM...market research? Seems like alot of people want Howard the Duck and Rocket Raccoon. Does this mean you dont trust what people online say? What sort of numbers would be comfortable to get them going? Did the ones you mentioned sell bad? Was it due to lack of subscribers, or lack of shop buyers?

I know theres no real way of seeing how many people would truthfully buy the figurine online, but how many people would need to petition to get the characters not so much 'made', but at least to be considered?

Robert said...

John, did I read that right? You haven't read any Thors? Just wondering, because that means you have still to marvel at the greatness that is the Simonson run...

Little interest in the horror characters left. Werewolf by Night seemed to pop up in most of the mainstream comics like MTU and Hulk so he seems the most obvious choice. Although we already have Man-Wolf. Hmm. Not sure. Does Brother Voodoo qualify, as he's been quite prominent the last couple of years?

John said...

Robert, you read right. Never cared for the guy. Every time he shows up in an issue of something else I read, I go, meh. Differences of taste, I'm sure. I doubt you would care for some of the characters that I love, but we can always celebrate the characters we share. :D

LAWay, so we have DBZ and Pokemon in common. ;) Oh, and we both want the Constrictor.

Okay, Robert. I'm breaking out the big guns in this one:

If this doesn't win you over, I don't know what will!!! ;)

Robert said...

You made me smile broadly, John, so I give in. Love the drawing. Therefore, I hereby formally announce that I shall refrain from anti-raccoon tirades and will surrender my Anti-Raccoon Raygun to the authorities later today.

I get the disinterest in Thor, John. The Shakespearian dialogue - or, I should say, Stan Lee's impression of Shakespeare - isn't to everyone's taste. Neither is the power level that he operates at. It's why some folk dislike Superman. He's as far away from your Daredevils or even Spideys as you can get. Still, can't help feeling that the Ballad of Beta Ray Bill would convert you.

Paibok said...

LaWay ''EM...market research? Seems like alot of people want Howard the Duck and Rocket Raccoon. Does this mean you dont trust what people online say? ''

Well marketing departments are supposed to tell US what we want, not the other way round, its been like that for years. Even though Howard is one of the highest placed characters in the polls, we don't really want him do we.

Rocket Racoon has the potential to be one of the standout figures of the collection.

John said...

I'm glad you like it, Robert. :D

THAT'S what makes me happy.

navaho said...

it has to be 'The Zombie Simon Garth'. I cant see any other horror character worth doing. Werewolf by night would mean too many wolvey character (assuming we are getting wolfsbane at some stage). I may have to build a kennal around a section of my collection!
Also Brother Voodoo just doesnt do it for me....

Robert said...

You're a good man, John. The drawing has been a highlight of a rather flat day. Actually, you should go and look at Ted's drawings, too. He did a great one of the folks on here a while back. For some reason the birthday boy was in his birthday suit! Let's hope SV drops in later and tells us what the birthday fairies brought him. :)

P.S. I'm just worried I have set a dangerous precedent. Draw me a cute picture with the Recorder and I'm putty in your hands!

John said...

Haha, I'm not asking you to like him, Robert. Just to accept him. ;)

Maybe next I'll draw Gene Colan in Recorder's arms. :D

John said...

Robert, I saw the drawings you spoke of. Wow, Ted's really good! Who would have thought?! ;)

navaho said...

Also I believe Simon Garth is a Golden Age character as well so it kills two birds with one stone.

Clever, eh?

John said...

That's interesting. I thought Simon Garth had a stronger history in Marvel...

According to comicvine, The Zombie first appeared in 1953 (so yes, GA character,) but in that time only got 47 appearances...

Werewolf by Night has 224.

Frankenstien's Monster: 99
The Living Mummy: 63
Manphibian: 16

And... that's it, right? I reckon it has to be the werewolf.

Robert said...

It's a stretch to think I like him, John! Tolerate is the highest tTHAT bar goes!

As for Ted, it's no surprise when you see the preliminary sketches he does for his mosaics and his wall art. With the likes of Ted's mosaics, Deadpool's and Adam's customs, Leigh's art, etc. we have a highly artistic bunch on here. I myself play the comb-and-paper. :)

mighty_marvel said...

unless supernatural is being put together with horror then brother voodoo has to be a strong contender. been around since 1973, 175 appearances, the new sorcerer supreme and would be far less controversial than an animal character after howardgate

Bagman said...

Interesting little list there John, bearing in mind that appearances hold little ground (as you'll probably hear later).
Frankensteins Monster is listed as 8 feet tall so that puts him in the special category(maybe?)
How about---
LILITH, Mother of Demons 63
SATANA 71
Just another couple for Dan to consider.

mighty_marvel said...

was just thinking that satana might stand an outside chance as the horror selection, especially considering this extension is light on females at the moment

Right then, curry night happening soon then some games of darts down the pub to finish up and Captain America out on Friday! So happy!

Thanks for all your birthday messages guys! Keep it real! :)

Excited for the horror pick.

Going by those issue counts Werewolf by Night is the strongest candidate.
But personally I would prefer Satana. I like her look and although she has a lower issue count she is currently featuring in Thunderbolts so that number will be climbing.

Wouldn't say no to Brother Voodoo either but is he a horror character???

Good to hear from you, SV. I must say, you are coping manfully with hitting the big 50. Let me just say, you are an example to us all and a credit to the organisation. :)

Companies do market research first. They see what their audience wants, they test the water and get as much feedback as possible.

Then the marketing team knocks up the stuff telling us that we want it. Havent you watched the Apprentice? :P

I dont want the duck, but acknowledge others do. I dont want the raccoon, and to go and say he could be the most stand out figurine in the collection sounds as ludicrous as the little critter killing thanos.

If you want one of those animal characters, i think its only fair to acknowledge the other deserves to be in the collection too, whether you like it or not. Otherwise you are just a hypocrite.

Stick with me and dislike both. ;)

Deadpool said...

Eaglemoist Bean Counters have denied us the Duck and a Racoon.

Dan, inform these Moistmen that they should slither back over the line and leave the figurines to the Mossmen.

Bean Counters that I have had the misfortune to encounter, are usually inadequate disfunctional middle aged men.

They exploit what little power they have to compensate for their small, rarely used and disfunctional wedding tackle.

They dream of danger and romance but instead of action, all they get is plenty of practice and a waste bin full of moist tissue.

Satana to fill this weeks Horror slot ... that's one Horror slot that definately deserves filling.

There are a lot of characters like them in this collection, example: Madrox, Chameleon, Blade, Kingpin, Punisher, Sandman...

,,I guess a Groot/Rocket Racoon double pack special would be the only way to get the Racoon in."
They should be next double pack, no doubts.

JIGSAW for this Friday, just look at his face, it's horror, aren't you scared?

Rocket could be the one of the standout sculpts, quite a lot of characters could be. A racoon with a gun the same size as he would be crazy and awesome at the same time. Pity we would never find out now.

Saw the Apprentice once for 10 minutes, hated it and never seen it again.

Horror characters go beyond vampires, werewolves and zombies they also include monsters. Someone mentioned that Horror characters don't appear in the modern Marvel anymore. Well yes whilst most don't, some do crop up in story arcs. But there is one who was until quite recently a member of GotG. He is considered cosmic, but originally back in the 50's he was horror.

Groot.

Not thrilled about the Horror character were getting this friday that instantly means there's only one character choice to look forward to then.

I have to say I think only having 3 girls this extension sucks and I want a girl this week and a girl next week please.

Gamora, Wolfsbane and Deathbird we should be getting 2 of those 3 this extension IMO.

mighty_marvel said...

definitely wolfsbane and very likely gamora will get in through the forum vote i reckon. last forum spot will depend on where the votes of the confirmed characters go. silver samurai, deathbird, sage, stingray, grey gargoyle and selene all stand a good chance as long as shaman is confirmed by EM.

will make another call for brother voodoo's confirmation this friday as the horror/supernatural character

Brother Voodoo or Werewolf by Night would do me fine.

CGJ, I highly recommend the new Guradians of the Galaxy series. Full of amazing characters, all of them, and fantastic ideas. My opinion of course. But Rocket became the stand out character to me. But I also love... well, all of them. ;)

With Horror, again I'm glad we're getting a slot set aside for a side area of the MU. Diversity for the collection will give us the most complete, scopyist version of any collection, ever! And if it IS Werewolf by Night, then he's just about the only one with an impressive appearance count. It almost "completes a team."

I am really happy to see so many people stand up for Rocket though. *single tear* I really mean that. Thanks, guys. It means a lot. :)

robert : which two characters would you like to be announced on friday ? One being a horror character of course. In fact , why don't we all choose two. I'd like ulysess bloodstone - horror , and clea - defenders / marvel knights.

Dan The Man said...

Haven't presented Rocker Raccoon to EM management yet, so there still is hope (don't hold your breath though) - or I could sneak him through and hope no one notices - maybe the last ever issue of CMFC?!! although when that will be is anybody's guess.

I'm really hoping we do get another extension past 200 - it's already the longest running EM part-work in recent history (I think some of the 80s science and encyclopeadia types went on forever, and Real Robots did well. In the figurines department Lord of The Rings only went to 180 and that was considered long running!) But I really would like to see some of the characters you guys champion get in the collection.

I think next time I won't restrict myself with the categories - Just put through some stonkingly good characters that will look great, rather than trying to get a broad MU coverage (although I did promise a GA spot).

Dan The Man said...

Oh, yes there will be a female on friday too....

mighty_marvel said...

Noooooo. Don't get rid of the categories. The coverage of all the MU is one of the main appeals of this collection. Easiest thing to do is just don't reveal to us the categories you're hoping to fill.

mighty_marvel said...

jewel, spitfire and namora wouldn't be bad choices either

Dan, when you should the management Rocket Raccoon, please explain his appeal and that he'll be a playable character in a high profile game very soon. Explain the fan-favoriteness of the character and that he's not played off for comedy like Impossible Man, Howard or Detective Chimp.

Maybe even show them a picture of him with a large Groot, explain how the majority of us Cosmic fans want them as a pair, and how well they would sell, just like Sasquatch and Puck. Maybe you can get the next Special confirmed in one go. I'm sure it would be a sigh of relief for a LOT of us.

Hoping for Gamora Friday.

I really really hope the female is Misty Knight or Jessica Jones. My two most wanted female characters (well with Colleen Wing obviously, but I have no doubt Misty Knight has more chances of getting in first)

I also hope Rocket Raccoon will get in somehow. Not long ago you talked about having Rocket Raccoon and tiny Groot in regular...hope it's still a possibility!@

Ken said...

Dan, please PLEASE tell EM to consider the High Evolutionary! He is an A list character that has been left out and forgotten, such an injustice!

Robert said...

Which two characters would I like, MT?

Loads to choose from. However, Dan said female and horror categories would be covered (although I'm not sure if one character will meet both criteria).

Female. Either Gamora or Mantis. I think that the latter is unlikely, but a strong chance of the former. So, quite hopeful.

Horror character. Not all that fussed. Werewolf by Night I know best, although Frankie made a few memorable appearances in MTU and the Avengers.

Still loads of interesting FF, Avengers and Spidey characters worth doing, so hope to see a couple more from these categories. Heaven knows we've seen enough X-Men...

Paibok said...

Horror character: Werewolf by Night or Living Mummy or Baron Blood. Would fit in with my supernatural display whoever.

Female: Gamora, Mantis, Clea, Thundra, Madame Masque, Marrina, Callisto or Diamondback would be great.

Female Horror: Satana, Topaz, Jennifer Kale, Lilith or the most horrific character to come out of marvel in recent years - Lady Deadpool.

The collection can easily surpass 200, there is no real reason why it shouldn't there are still so many characters to do, the interest still seems to be there.

Trying to sneak Rocket into the main collection will only backfire I think him in a DP with Groot is the best way, like the Sasquatch and Puck double. Something similar for the canard with Doctor Bong.

Completing the GotG would be pheonomenal.

So Dan just a quick question, would there be any problems with getting Bug in the collection. Obviously a large part of his history with with the Micronauts where there is license issues, but he is now a Marvel character. Just thinking ahead to the competition thats all trying to whittle down options..

Victor said...

Dan said female and horror categories would be covered (I'm not sure if one character will meet both criteria is Death).

mighty_marvel said...

the categories should be kept to give a wide a range of MU characters as possible. just keep them broad and don't say anything specific like putting through a horror character.

EM get 16 choices so have the categories as

4 x-men related (includes villains)
4 avengers related (includes villains)
1 spiderman related
1 F4 related
2 marvel knight related
4 other

the other category keeps things flexible but we avoid getting an extension full of x-men or full of avengers. all areas of the MU need representation.

Disagree with Mad Thinker about few Spidey & FF characters left.

Spidey : MOLTEN MAN, TOMBSTONE, JACK O'LANTERN, JACKAL, STEGRON, PUMA, SWARM, THE ENFORCERS, CARDIAC, RINGMASTER, MR. HYDE, SCARECROW, SPEED DEMON, BOOMERANG, GRIZZLY, TARANTULA, VERMIN

FF : TRAPSTER, TERRAX, BLASTAAR, AIR-WALKER, RED GHOST & HIS SUPER APES, THE MAD THINKER & HIS AWESOME ANDROID, DIABLO, DRAGONMAN, MOLECULE MAN, THUNDRA, PSYCHO-MAN, SALEM'S SEVEN, MAXIMUS THE MAD, RAMA-TUT

The above list is what I could remember offhand & that is a few bad guys so again I disagree with MT.

Is it one horror & one woman next so no WHIRLWIND or ATTUMA or BARON MORDO or TRAPSTER so major disappointment for me.

The only horror that comes to mind is Jack Russell as WEREWOLF BY NIGHT. I wonder is NIGHTMARE considered horror or Baron Blood or just Frankenstein's Monster & the Zombie. Perhaps a list of horror characters would be helpful at least for me.
As for a woman of course a villainess so PRINCESS PYTHON, QUICKSAND or DEATHBIRD

So we can't have a racoon, or a duck, which probably means a no for a large teleporting dog as well, because people who care not a jot for the MU say so, but we continue to be inundated with nonsense female characters.

2 SPIDEY :

YES! Get rid of the categories. I would much prefer the best of the best appearing first and foremost. Some people petition awesome characters, but are limited because its too many villains, or spidey characters, or whatever.

Also...dont see many people wanting Horror characters. Why do the suits approve of these? People are knocking on the door with howard and rocket raccoon...cant you see it?

As for Groot being in GotG and used to be a horror character, thats what I mean about being represented in modern marvel. If characters havent worked in decades, Marvel work them into the current universe somehow. But alot of characters they leave on the shelf because they dont work...like much of the horror characters. Apart from Blade, do they have a place in marvel?

John said...

"but we continue to be inundated with nonsense female characters."

???

I'm definitely with MightyMarvel about the categories. I want variety in the collection. I'm happy to take all characters, as I love the MU as a whole, but I like knowing that when I hear there's a new extension, I can count on at least 1 Spidey character or 2 Cosmics.

You don't have to use any set guidelines or anything, I'm just asking that you make sure you don't have too many of any one group.

"Just thinking ahead to the competition thats all trying to whittle down options.."

Paibok, if you choose Bug as your competition pick, I will be ecstatic. :D

"..like much of the horror characters. Apart from Blade, do they have a place in marvel?"

Yeah. Man-Thing, Morbius and Dracula are used fairly frequently. That's why they're already in the collection. ;) I see what you're getting at though. The others? Not so much. Just when Marvel needs a Legion of Monsters story.

Talking about horror characters would be cool to see NOMAK from Blade 2 movie, but unfortunately he never was in comic.
So best choice would be PHANTOM RIDER who was in Ghost Rider movie, or BLACKOUT who will be popular in next year because of Ghost Rider 2 movie.

As for female characters: DEATHBIRD or GAMORA.

And agree that there are still so many Spidey-related characters that have to be in CMFC:
Tombstone, Doppelganger, Demogoblin, Carrion, Shriek, Alistair Smythe, Spot, Kaine, Mary Jane, Silvermane,...

I'm not really a fan of the horror characters as much as some of the other characters that I feel are more deserving to be in the collection like Baron Mordo and Whirlwind. But if we are getting a horror character I'd say Baron Blood and Brother Voodoo are the top choices.

For female I'd really, really like to see Deathbird confirmed on Friday. She's a great character and would make a stunning figurine!

With respect to the female character situation. It's not as if we are innundated with them in this extension. We have 3. 3 out of 12 confirmations.
And speaking to my LCS man he says that the female statues sell far more and far quicker than the male statues.
Ok so we have had a few dud females, but we have had a few dud males too. But IMO the female sculpts tend to be a lot....better (?) than the males. In that I mean the poses are sexier, the sculpts are a lot more visually appealing.

I'm so glad Dan's is doing away with the categories next extension, it makes sense because there are so many Spidey characters worth doing (Stegron, Tarantula, Molten Man, White Tiger, Jackal, Tombstone, etc, etc).

Also FF and Thor characters need to be over-represented next time.

Hope to see Simon Garth and Gamorrah tomorrow.

Will the weekly updates continue once the character announcements are over?

I certainly hope so

spidey_1979 said...

Doing away with the categories is an awful idea. Some sort of balance has to be kept. I'd hate an extension to be 10 x-men and 10 avengers. You need to appeal to the spiderman fans and the fantastic four fans etc as well. Just have the five main families and an other category like MM suggested and it won't be too restrictive, but would still ensure a good mix of characters.

mighty_marvel said...

ok. i've decided. i'm throwing my support for the female character behind JEWEL.

we could do with another avenger confirmation this extension, she's been very important to recent storylines, racked up 250ish appearances in only 10 years and has her own TV show in the pipeline. definitely deserving and not likely to get in anyway through the forum poll.

and as always BROTHER VOODOO for the horror/supernatural slot

BobDiamond said...

Jewel is an odd, but interesting choice, being a character that has been retconned into the earlier Marvel era (a bit like The Sentry)...so if she was to be made how would you want her; in her street-clothes/ private-eye look (which made her famous), or her rather dull generic 'super-hero' costume- that has only featured a small number of times in 'normal' continuity?

BD

deamon said...

Jewel has only 5 votes in regular poll, she will have her time in future extensions, now we have more wanted ladies:
51 Wolfsbane
38 Gamora
36 Deathbird
34 Sage
29 Selene

Here is a list of Horror Characters:

Werewolf By Night
Frankensteins Monster
Simon Garth
Brother Voodoo
Satana
N'Kantu The Living Mummy
Manphibian
Scarecrow
Lillith
Elsa Bloodstone
Hannibal King
Satannish
Shuma Gorath
Nightmare
Baron Blood

And the one Marvel character who seems to terrify a lot of people here........

........

HOWARD THE DUCK!!!!!!!!!

Paibok said...

That list of five to me is exactly why there is only three women confirmed so far. When 4 out of 5 are X-Men related characters it hardly speaks of variety, and also suggests there are not any strong female characters left in other areas.
The next 5 in the same list also produces 4 x-women (Pixie, Dust, M and Magma) with Thundra who is considered a special in 6th spot.

Robert said...

I'm fine with categories. It depends more on what the categories are, though. While I was ecstatic when we started getting an Asgardian every extension, I am opposed to the idea of including regular Golden Age and Horror characters. I'd much rather use these precious slots for some of the many, many cosmic or Spidey-related characters still to make an appearance.

LAWay said...

My picks:

Female: Thundra. Especially if you have seen that new statue coming out. Looks gorgeous.

Horror: Although Howard the Duck is a frightening thought (actually he is listed as 'horror' on marvels website - editor) I will go with Toxin.

thundra wouldn't be a bad choice but it would require EM coming to their senses over her not actually being special sized

Jewel definitely. Like Mighty_marvel said she got 250 issues in 10 years, a tv show in work (with Luke Cage and Mrs Marvel appearing in it) plus bendis said he wanted to do another Alias serie soon. She's the only current avengers member not done (with Speedball and Justice if you count Avengers academy's teacher)

I think she is the most important modern character to be made. Plus, She is Luke Cage's wife!!!

To answer Bob Diamond, I prefer her in her Jewel outfit. I think its really cute and quite iconic for her character. Even if she appeared more in street clothes...that would look less good imo. I love her jewel costume! The question is with pink wig or not?

Nicely done Dan.
Doing away with categories keeps everyone guessing.

I like it when people have the balls to stand up and be counted.

I have been known to break the rules, provided it is for the right cause and the right reasons.

Anwyay big no to Wolfsbane ... I think she is a HORROR of a character and would end up looking like a butch version of the disco dancing Manwolf.

Let's have Bloodstone and Bloodstone ans this weeks marvel team up revelation.

Ulyses = Horror choice.
Elsa = Boob choice

Ted .... Princess Python Marvel custom should be ready to reveal by Sunday evening ...

If BARON BLOOD, NIGHTMARE & SCARECROW are considered horror characters as Hood listed then I would pick one of these three. Anyone would make a great looking figure & all three are villains.

I see talk of this Jewel character who is a post 2000 character which I think places her back a bit in the collection but I do not get how the name Jewel corresponds to her superpowers of flight, strength & near invulnerability.

I hope they pick a bad girl from PRINCESS PYTHON, QUICKSAND or DEATHBIRD.

enough with the female characters, the marvel universe is mainly male dominated so each extention should only include up to 3 or 4 females at best. i also agree with many others that there are far too many x characters in the collection already.we need more classic villains as i will not be buying any more minor females or x related characters.lastly wolfsbane should not be added to this extention as we already have the seriously dreary danielle moonstar.

At the risk of sounding a bit like tomasz unless there is some devine intervention Wolfsbane will be in this extension whether you like it or not. The forum will vote her through if she ain't confirmed before, and will probably win by a fair mile.
