Weekly fix...

Nothing particulary mind-blowing to say this week. Very interesting reading your comments. I'll try to answer randomly some of your questions...

Brood drone? Hydra Goon? - I love the idea of generic characters in the Classic(?) Marvel Figurine Collection, but I think there are other individuals that we need to get in first. Such as Sebastian Shaw who I can confirm* will be in the next X-tension! (*EM reserve the right to withdraw this statement). Hope you guys are happy with his inclusion, and not just because he's a major character in the new X-film!

Remakes? Not at this stage, I agree a spin-off subset of characters would be cool - if only we could convince the boss!

Rocket Raccoon/Groot. Richard has advised me that Groot has recently become small, so in reality we could do both of them on a single base as a regular. Probably the only way we'll get Groot in. or RR on his own?

Sorry Robert I can't Have your babies I've been neutered.

Ted Sallis - it'll take a lot more than a crisp Scottish pound to get Ulysses Bloodstone in the collection ;}

If we were considering White Tiger - male or female version?

KirlianEyes - Love the virtual CMFC gallery - I don't want to know how long that must have taken! Very impressive. Want a job?

Rulk or Ross? As Rulk would be a special I'd go for Ross.

'Classic' in the title. It's just a word our managing director wanted to use, we weren't ever entirely convinced with it but, ours is not to reason why.

Here's the latest stage in Mockingbird's development:

Still some detailing to be improved upon.

Here's the the cover for Spiral by Jack Lawrence, he does a lot of our girlie covers when we are caught short for good hi-res images. (not fully approved by Marvel yet, but I doubt there will be any major problems with it).

here's the rough aswell. We have recently been ordered not to cover the Marvel logo on the cover, so we have been trying to be good! It's difficult though as I love covering up the logo with nice big artwork.

That's all for now, If any new figurine pics come in I will upload them asap.

How cone no one ever mentions Power pack ? I think they have a pretty big showing in the marvel universe. Unfortunately they've turned them into a kids book. I would love to have some representation of them for my collection.

Well it's clear to see what the fans want a new mutant this extension never mind who it is. I think it should be Mirage or maybe Magma. Wolfsbane is one of the x-factor crew to alot of us.

I think that with us getting Sebastian Shaw and hopefully Longshot will be confirmed so we need a female x-character so basically it should be a female new mutant. Mirage, Magma or maybe Karma (the very first new mutant)

Sebastian Shaw
Longshot
*Female New Mutant member

That would make 3 great x-selections. (I still want Mirage the most)

LAWay said...

bearbrian, funny you should mention power pack, since they have huge appearance numbers.

Rocket Raccoon making a marvel impact? Still dont buy it. Popular with the people who read his current comics, but still...47 titles in modern day comics so one of the leading characters of a team? Spidey makes that much appearances a month.

Out of what Editor mentioned, I would prefer Wolfsbane. More marvel impact and was in a great run in x-factor. Although, do we NEED a NM?

Looking forward to seeing JJJ.

History, Personality & Design
- 3 factors to keep in balance.

As a reader of comics, I value a character's history and personality. As a collector of figurine, I often crave for superheroes with outlandish, imaginative, eye-catching design.

Ideally, I would like each CMFC extension to balance these factors to ensure that for each rather plain-looking Longshot we get an outlandish-looking Warlock, for example.

I would happily take up to 2 New Mutants, as I love them. Sunspot and Warlock are at the top of my list. I love Mirage as a character, but I can't help but feel that she'd make a rather unimpressive figurine.

And that's my view, folks.

Since none of know how long this collection will get the green light,I am truly hoping The Swordsman makes it this extension. I'd also like to see Starfox,USAgent,DR. Spectrum,Hyperion,Citizen V,Shaman and others, but my top choice is Swordsman.

Hate to be the fore-bearer of bad news guys, but I've just been over on the SHFF and it sounds like the DC Collection is coming to a close after the next extension. That will take them to 100 main figures, plus the Specials and the BN/BD Sub-set.
As you can imagine they're all pretty gutted by the announcement- although it's not set in stone quite yet.
Many theories for this...
-Is it in response to this major DC Re-boot that is happening, and therefore DC are pulling the plug themselves because they don't want to promote their soon-to-be 'old line' of characters?
-Has the BN/BD plus Batmobile Collection plus Chess-Set stretched the potential market too far- making it too expensive for a lot of us?
-Are there too many 'legacy' characters produced, which is just turning off the casual buyer?

Whatever the reasons it'll be a great pity as there are still a number of worthy figures to go(personally I was looking forward to Swamp-Thing).
All we can hope for is that THIS collection still has a few years to run and keep showing our support for Dan, Rich and the Boys at EM for the excellent work they do.

The DC Collection cancellation is terrible news. Hopefully Dan you can tell us how much life there is left in this collection. Let the bean-counters know that before cancelling this series they should ask us, if we could stand a price increase, a switch to resin or some other cost savings measure which would let us sustain the collection for another extension or two.

Onto less depressing topics...my most wanted New Mutant would be Mirage, with Karma running a close second. To be honest I want the entire team represented in the CMFC! But if we plan for each extension to be the last, then Mirage is who I'd want most.

Northstar however remains my most pressing want. Hopefully we'll get the final word on his inclusion very soon.

The biggest omissions for me (not necessarily who I want most) are:

VILLAINS: Baron Mordo, Constrictor, Arnim Zola, Count Nefaria, Whirlwind, Moonstone, Morgan LeFay, MODOK, Hammerhead, Jigsaw, Selene, Silver Samurai, Hela, Owl & Grey Gargoyle.

HEROES: Shaman, Marrina, Lockjaw, Mirage, Wolfsbane, M, Shatterstar, Rictor, US Agent, Sersi, Starfox, Justice, Vance Astro, Starhawk, Gamora, Mantis, Swordsman, Karma, Magma, Warlock, Sunspot, Phantom Rider, Red Wolf, Shroud, Paladin, Brother Voodoo, Thundra, Darkstar, Vanguard, Corsair, Warpath, Dust, Anole, Wiccam Hulkling, Patriot, and the Daughters of the Dragon Misty Knight & Colleen Wing. Oh who am I kidding there's hundreds left!!!

Robert said...

My immediate reaction to the possible cancellation of the DC collection was quite different to Bob and Kal's. I feel sorry for the guys like Bob who collect the DC figures and yet I can't help but think it might be good news for the CMFC. It's one less thing for collectors to buy and therefore should leave them with fewer choices over what to spend their money on. (Yes, I know a lot subscribe, still, not everyone does and some may be considering cancelling now we are getting increasingly obscure characters and with possible future series like the chess set.) Sorry if that sounds unsympathetic or selfish, it's not meant to be. Just another perspective.

Wow that seems to have come around pretty quickly for the DC collection.

I don't get the collection myself as I dont read any DC titles but I have hand picked the ones I remember from my youth.

Looking at the website there are are few that I dont recognise that I will have to get because the sculpts are just amazing. Azrael is it? amazing looking fig

Hopefully whoever has decided this will change their mind, unless the stated DC reboot will mean a collection reboot to match and they will start over from 1

Great sculpt for Mockingbird, and i'm also loving the artwork for the spiral cover. PLEASE , PLEASE , PLEASE Strogly consider Death's head for the extension, i think he would look awesome as a figure. I know there are other characters that might have more of a background or significance for others in the marvel universe but a lot of these characters look similar to ones in the collection already. Also a lot of them wouldn't look that good as a figure, for example grey gargoyle, how boring would he look ? not spectacular by any means.Death's head on the other hand would stand out and look amazing, hope everyone else agree's ? if not prove me wrong. thanks for letting me have this rant , keep up the good work and i look forward to your next post.

Not as big a fan of DC as Marvel & with DC it was Batman I liked best. He has the best line up of bad guys but the overall DC Universe is pretty lame compared to Marvel so I did not buy all of the DC so I could buy all of the Marvel Collection. I frankly hope it extends to at least 300.
I realize the whole extension cannot be villains which is why I included a few heroes in my list.
I picked both HAMMERHEAD & TOMBSTONE but if it comes down to one or the other I would pick HAMMERHEAD because he has been around longer & as I said before he will look great in his blue pinstriped suit holding his tommy-gun.
I picked the TRAPSTER to complete the original FRIGHTFUL FOUR.
I picked SHAMAN & MARRINA to complete the original ALPHA FLIGHT. I picked WHIRLWIND & THE MELTER to add to the earlier MASTERS OF EVIL.
I picked MANTIS & SWORDSMAN to add to the Avengers roster & SWORDSMAN being a mentor to Hawkeye & then a villain before becoming an Avenger made him a dual choice.
I picked THE COBRA & MR. HYDE because they have menaced many of Marvel heroes either as a team or by themselves or with other villainous teams like the SERPENT SQUAD or the MASTERS OF EVIL.
I picked THE OWL because as a longtime enemy of both DD & Spidey his time is long overdue.
I picked BARON MORDO because he is DR. STRANGE'S main foe.
I picked THE MOLTEN MAN as a longtime Spidey foe & later friend.
And finally another plea for STILT-MAN & STEGRON THE DINOSAUR MAN they will make great looking figures.
All the classic characters I picked were because they finished up teams or added to teams or to a hero's roster of villains & because they will look great as figures.
I see the newer character called the Hood mentioned often but not only do I find him an uninteresting character but he is just a regular dressed any guy in pants & shirt wearing a hood & cape & I think he will make a pretty lame looking figure.

Bye bye DC collection, didn't know who most of you were, but appreciated the quality product.
On the plus side, that's one less collection vying for the same pound coinage. I mean c'mon!, it's DC;)
Glad to see everyone backing a Warlock remake as the one we have is mince ;).

tinodragon14 said...

DANI MOONSTAR I understand as one of the original 5 New Mutants. Since they have CANNONBALL but not in his New Mutants costume. I did not like their choice of costume but I like how he is blasting off. And they have MAGIK who joined later there by leaping over the other 4 members - KARMA (who they will not pick because she is a lesbian), WOLFSBANE, SUNSPOT (I wonder if they could do him in his darkened powered state?) & of course MOONSTAR AKA MIRAGE AKA PSYCHE (Too many different names!!!).
Where as I don't get the interest in MOONSTONE which was originally a lame looking bad guy before Marvel in it's feminist stage switched it to a lame looking bad gal.

LAWay said...

I only bought a couple of figures from the DC Collection. Not that interested in DC really apart from their main characters.

All good things must come to an end though, and its better to end on a high. Maybe they have plans for something else, who knows.

If the CMFC came to an end, as long as EM had something else up their sleeves Marvel related that was similarly priced with similar quality, I wouldnt be worried.

Personally for me its between Magma and Mirage for the New Mutants, but if there was a poll, Wolfsbane will win with Mirage a close second, third spot would be a toss between Sunspot and Warlock, then Magma, with Karma and Cypher barely getting a look in.
If there were some specific polls again (like the 121-140 extension then you could then work out a good balance of characters rather than the likely scenario of a large poll at the end dominated by X-Men, I think the latest request poll ended up with 10 X-characters in the top 20.
Besides it would be good research into which characters from a specific area people want, and might give characters like Misty Knight and Colleen Wing who people presumed were a surefire double a chance.

John said...

Tino and other blog members, if you are not aware, there is a Request poll on the superherofigurineforum... um, forum. Request your Top 10 picks for who you want to see in the 180-200 extension. But hurry, because results are getting sent to EM at the end of the week. (Did I get all that right?)

So Robert, I better see Recorder and Gamora on there with another vote! ;)

...I actually wanted to post something about balancing future extensions, but now I'm not so sure. Here's what I wanted to say... Most people are saying Wolfsbane because she has been on so many teams, has the most appearances, by far the fan favorite, etc. Then they say "save Mirage, Warlock, Sunspot for a future extension." If we're really worried about characters becoming more and more obscure and putting off buyers, shouldn't we mix up the "likely" members of teams with the "less likely?"

Moonstone's really popular, but put Fixer or Atlas through instead and people will demand another extension just to complete the team. Marrina or Vindicator over Shaman. Shatterstar over Longshot. Colleen Wing over Misty Knight. Star-Lord or Pip over Gamora. This is coming from a HUGE Gamora fan, but I really think that saving some higher profile characters for the next extension would help sales and CMFC length in the long run. Don't do this with every single team, of course... just a couple.

But now with the news of the end of the DC line, if every extension really could be the last, I don't know. I personally hate Wolfsbane and Longshot, but maybe they should get put through now, for the fans, in case there's no chance later. Or if what the line really needs is a short term boost, they should have higher sales and thus at least get us into 200-220.

Especially as a "hundred marker" is a good place to end in many's eyes, maybe EM should really focus on rounding out the areas they've started and getting the highest profile and most wanted characters in this small 20-character window. Finish off the Frightful Four with Trapster, pass Longshot, Wolfsbane, Silver Samurai, get the highest profiles of teams with Shaman and Moonstone, and make sure MODOK and Lockjaw get in to get the higher profile Inhuman (besides Maximus) and because we frickin' NEED MODOK!!!

Of course, I want the collection to go past 500, as I like the more obscure, but... Yeah, as was said earlier, before the bean counters make a decision, ask us what we're willing to do. The US price just increased with Prowler, going from $12 to $14. I could take another increase. I have NO money, but I'll make sure its set aside for the collection. I always do. Switch to resin to save in costs and shipping? Fine with me. Drop the magazine? I'd feel bad for those that actually read it, but I think we all buy the collection for the figurines, not the magazine, and would rather get a magazine-less figurine than none at all.

Of course your SUNSPOT figure shows him dark powered but with his costume showing but in the comic he turns completely dark powered.

Quesada has gone now so we should get JJJ with a cigar, hopefully.

Always amused me that Marvel have been so strident in their opposition to the obvious evils of tobacco, but gives every other character a knife.

Robert said...

Ah, John, by telling me someone on the forum is voting for the Recorder you made me smile. Nice to know there's one other person on my wavelength. I don't ever expect to see a Recorder made, hence my modification of a Machine man figure. Hardly professional but then it's just for me and it's not being entered in a show or anything. Anyway, I'm not a forum member and don't want to be, so I can't vote.

As for your thinking about the collection and whether to save some more popular characters till later, I say 'no'. I actually believe that the CMFC has lots of life in it yet, and that the demise of the DC Collection is irrelevant (and possibly even beneficial). Regardless, I'm not getting any younger and it already seems we wait ridiculous amounts of time to get these little guys and gals. I mean, the collections been around since, what, 2004 or 2005 and we still don't have any hint we're getting any of the Warriors Three!!

MGF, couldn't agree more. They can show characters tossing folk off the Empire State Building and firing a lightning bolt through a character's chest and leaving a gaping hole, and so on, and yet smoking has to be censored?!!? That makes exactly no sense to me.

tinodragon14 said...

Thanks John for the heads up on the request poll. I voted but looking at the numbers none of my bad guys stand a snowball's chance in hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In case you are curious & even if you're not I had to whittle down my 20 to 10 so I wind up with...
ATTUMA
BARON MORDO
COBRA
HAMMERHEAD
MELTER
MR. HYDE
OWL
STEGRON THE DINOSAUR MAN
STILT-MAN
WHIRLWIND
Of course not a single one placed in the top ten or even the top 15. BARON MORDO & THE OWL I think just barely squeezed into the top 20.
Truly a sad day for me.

Very sad to hear of the end of the DC collection. After a dodgy start it really got going and produced some superb figures. I'm sure this cretinous reboot has something to do with it.

It'd be nice if we could get Captain Marvel Junior to finish off the Marvel Family.

Back to Marvel and cigs. The hypocrisy of being moral guardians against nictine, yet giving the little darlings violence previously unseen in comics history is far more breathtking than a forty a day habit.

John said...

True Tino, but make their presence known, and they will gain recognition. EM needs to know that people are wanting these characters. You voting for Stegron when few others do, tells them there's fans out there, but also shows other collectors that its a viable option.

One member on the forum wouldn't stop talking about White Tiger for years, and here we are on the blog debating his inclusion. We still have Gamora and Wolfsbane to add, but we're seriously debating White Tiger. One supporter may be all a character needs to push them into the spotlight.

The French forum members all praise Swordsman to get another French character in, and the rest of the board go "Oh, yeah. I forgot about him, but what a classic character he'd make." Most American readers had no clue who Deaths Head was, still don't, but with all the others supporting it, its kind of contagious.

Healing ability: In ancient times, bloodstone was thought to be able to stop hemorrhages with the merest touch. Bloodstone relieves stomach and bowel pain. It strengthens blood purifying organs and improves blood circulation. Bloodstone has a positive influence on a bladder.

Tiinodragon- it's not all about popularity or the Forum. The team at Eaglemoss all have a say in who gets in, and I'm sure their favourites make it in sooner than otherwise (can you say Nomad?) Then some characters are just due, meaning it's is their time to be included, because their absence has become jarring. I honestly believe that this extension will give us Baron Mordo. I think he is due. Doc Strange hasn't had a villain in ages, besides you know there is a Defenders fan at Eaglemoss (Hellcat, Nighthawk, Valkyrie) so we're going to see Clea or Mordo for sure - we could even get both (I'd support that).

Eaglemoss throw us curvecballs every extension - last time I'm pretty sure no one saw Shanna or Puppet master coming. Sit back, realx and enjoy Dan's weekly revelations. I can guarantee you - he will surprise us and one of those surprises just might be from your top ten list.

In all the blogs I've read, there's one character that's been totally overlooked. He's been there since almost day one of the Modern Marvel Comics. We've followed his trials and tribulations. His highs and the deep lows. we've watched him grow, some of us have even grown up with him. We met him before he was super powered and he juggles with his 'normal' life just as much as his super alter ego.
Ever since that panel with him having his hair ruffled by Uncle Ben. There should be a Peter Parker figure..........

Barnabas

Robert said...

Not true! I mentioned alter-egos on here at least a year ago, Barnabas, when I was talking about civilians like Jarvis, Rick Jones, Ross and Jameson,. Like all of my ideas, it was met with either silence or rejection. I still think a Peter Parker, Tony Stark, Matt Murdock, etc. would be nice, although not yet in the collection.

I would love a 2000AD collection, but can't see it happening.

I think although we old gits would lap it up the yoot would struggle with it. Now if EM could do a deal with Tharg that was a proper cross-promotion with the comic that might be a good deal. First mega-special Hammerstein, please.

Does anyone here really, rilly, rly, think either of the chess sets will ever see the light of day? The Marvel one has been tried before and failed, and that before the finances of the Western world drove off a cliff.

Robert said...

I'm optimismistic about the CMFC but not the chess set. If the CMFC didn't exist, maybe it would have a better chance. I for one would certainly have been more inclined to collect the chess set if I didn't already have these little metal figures from the CMFC.

I've just been rereading some classic Robo-Hunter - hence the Carlos Sanchez Robo-Stoogie reference - and 2000AD would make a superb collection. It would be even better than the CMFC. Very much doubt it will happen... sigh...

Ares: in a CMFC Olympus

Got my Ares figurine today. In my opinion, one of the best figurines in the entire collection if you consider these criteria:

1. The paintjob is exquisite in every detail. Many fine details.

2. The sculpt is superb, lavishly equipped with a beautiful sword, axe and helmet.

3. The reproduction of the character's design is practically perfect. Straight from the comic page.

Kudos to EM for producing this great figurine, which is of the highest standard.

2 standards, 2 manufacturers?
I'd like to know more about the manufacturing process. Some figurines are very basic, like Batroc for example. Some others are top quality, like Annihilus or Ares for example. I wonder if EM have a production team for basic figurines and another one for the highest standard ones. I wonder what decision process is involved in deciding if a character has go to the 'basic' manufacturer or the 'top notch' one.

Apologies fer not getting it, but why is a 2000AD collection not likely? Are we talking complicated licencing, or wot. Is it Rebellion that own 2000A.D or was i drunk again ????any who why would they be averse to making money....don't tell me cos it's too British innit, not enuff internatinal interest or sumfink, i should wager an no mistake. Loved that early strip featuring The Volgans??.....ah dear old cold war paranoia, i miss you.
Oh, and Kirlianeyes, I instinctively scoffed at your suggestion about A class and B class figs..but you may well have a point.
Oh, and if 2000 AD ever makes it to resin, make em DC size, that tiny increase in size makes a helluva increase in quality.
good evening.

Robert said...

2000AD do not have a great licensing history, Ted. They have had very limited statue and poseable figure releases. I really don't know why they haven't had more success with toys, etc. but someone else may be able to explain. The 2000Ad characters would make great figures, no doubt about it.

Volgans? Sounds like you're talking about The V.C.s, Ted. Cracking series.

LAWay said...

coz 2000AD is as boring as CBR Beast's rants. ;)

I think it fails on every level merchandise wise doesnt it? When Toy Biz lost out on the Marvel Legends license, fans went crazy because they were the best toy company ever. So they went from Marvel to the Indy comics and included 2000AD. The series lasted 2 outings and I havent heard from Toy Biz since.

If the collection is going to end sooner rather than later, I want to see less 'curveballs' and less 'less likely known characters'. Finish off the teams and alliances already established, fill in with some important teams and characters yet to be made, and stop wasting the spots on people everyone has the argue who the heck they are.

If EM are struggling to get N&A as a 2-pack, no way in hell with White Tiger get one, especially since most people aint bothered of having 1 white tiger, yet alone 2.

Bob said...

For female I'd choose Gamora or maybe Phylla-Vell, but I also want Caiera Oldstrong. I love those female warrior types. I don't get it why Terrax should be a Special, he is no bigger than Thor or Beta Ray Bill at 6'6", is it because of his huge Cosmic Battle Axe? Also Mr. Hyde is listed at 6'5" also good enough to be a regular figure in "Classic" form. I recall the Wrecker to be huge but cast as a regular, so what gives?

Anonymous said...

Hey ted,
yes, there is no doubt that figurines like Batroc and Pyro require basic painting skills, while figurines like Ares need a more artful technique. It'd be interesting to understand how EM plan/manage this. Who decides the level of detail to be achieved. And does it depend on the character's design or on a business need to alternate easy and difficult paint jobs.
Hi Dan, is there a strategy for this?

mgf said...

There are several valid criticisms that could be made of 2000AD, but I'm not sure boring is one of them. Perhaps you had to be there thirty odd years ago, like when X-Men were any good.

With the DC Collection seemingly passing into partwork Valhalla, to join "Build an eight foot Eiffel Tower out of matchsticks in just 300,000 monthly issues", it's brought the, let's be honest, closer than ever before demise of the CMFC into close relief.

Which of the figures we have or are planned would you have replaced and with whom?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Ah now i see, The main impediment to a 2000ad collection would be it's smallish roster ( plus they're booooring, not great like muscley wussely men hitting each other over and over)
I still wince every time i see one o them partwork ads for something like "Build your owwn F1 car" part one only £2.99.
Then at the top of the screen in teensy weensy writing " regular price £7.99 complete in 80 issues"

So no Gruber for me. Aaah well the yoof have spoken innit?
To answer your query mgf, if i could nip onto doc dooms time traveling doohicky, i would replace Silver so what?? with Princess Python, And Sir Chris Hoy with the proper Captain Britain.

CGJ, every vote counts. Its nice to glance at a list, but with so many individual lists floating around, no single one is going to get too much recognition. Whirlwind has been climbing his way up the polls. Your vote could be the one that pushes him into EM's eyesight.

2000AD? As an American reader who is under 50, I have no interest. For me, a new line that makes the most sense is Street Fighter. Of course, this old debate only opens a can of worms where everyone names their favorite franchise and how EM should do a collection around it...

As its almost Friday, I'm just going to throw out a couple of names in hopes of catching Dan's eye and swaying his inkling for the announcement:

Rocket Raccoon

Gamora

Wiccan

Brother Voodoo

Warlock

I agree that top. 20 would be the end. Casual buyer wouldn't want many of those picks.

LAWay said...

casual buyer? I think we have long jumped that boat. (is that even an expression?)

I dont think many characters left appeal to 'casual buyers' unless you look at more modern characters that are staring in comics, like Young Avengers and Thunderbolts.

I didnt think that 20 was *too* bad, certainly a couple I would love as definites.

But maybe thats the thing. The top 20 in a poll and you guys are saying it would kill the collection. Maybe this says the collection cannot sustain more extensions, as not even fan favourites appeal to all collectors.

As for 2000AD, i was slightly joking, never really read the comics, but have never been interested either. They have a poor market share and thus a product line like the CMFC wouldnt last past a handful of characters.

What should EMs next collection be? Before we jump the gun on other lines, I would just love them doing more Marvel, just give us plenty of the big characters we all love in the costumes we all love. If that means 4 iron men, 3 wolverines, 2 captain britains...so be it.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

4 Iron Men,3 Wolverines 2 Captain Britains and a Bloodstone in a peaaaaaarr tareeeeeeee!!
Instead of looking for new partworks for those talented DC sculptors, just begin another Marvel line along the ...eh lines of what dear old Leigh has been banging on aboot fer months.
We could fill our boots with AoA Wolvie, original Cap Britain,Classic Shellhead,WW2 Cap n Bucky etc,etc

Ach, John, not another knock-back! First it was Dan refusing my offers to have his babies and now you throw out my alter-egos idea! Sniff, I have feelings, you know! Actually, it's kind of funny, really. I have now come to expect that my ideas will bomb. When I heard someone on the fourm wanted the Recorder I was rather stunned. Someone agrees with me??? How did that happen?! As for 2000AD, if you were handy, I'd drop off a few volumes of classic stuff for you to see what you think. I have loaned my Strontium Dog Volume 1 to a friend's twelve-year old son and I'm curious to see what he makes of it. I was younger when I first read these stories but they hold up very, very well. Carlos Ezquerra is a genius. His character designs - Dredd, Johnny Alpha - and technology - Lawgiver and especially the Lawmaster, the coolest motorbike ever - are amazing. I'm a huge Marvel Zombie but even I have to admit that in the late 1970s and early 1980s there was nothing Marvel was doing that could touch 2000AD.

bearbrian said...

Is it official that the DC line is over? I loved that line too.

I guess I agree that casual buyers aren't the people who make this collection. It's just hard for me to say because most people I know only buy certain figures because they don't want to hunt all over for them so they special order. I'm curious how it would be if they were readily available in the USA.

Triton.

Finally made my way to FP for Triton. Nice pose. Pity about a section of his left thigh that is noticeably uneven and scale-less. Also what looks like reddish paint on the inside of his other thigh. Otherwise, quite happy. In general, the scales are very well done, especially on his torso.

Haven't read the magazine but the cover has an almost-unrecognisably muscular Triton image by Liam Sharp. He looks like the Hulk, and not just because he's green!

One last thought, we got Triton before Karnak. When I thought about it, Karnak always seemed a cooler character. His ability to sense the weakness in objects and then use karate-like blows is much more interesting and dramatic than Triton's rather mundane amphibious power. I like Triton but what can he do that the average Atlantean can't? Anyone else surprised by the order they were released?

BobDiamond said...

Robert, if it makes you feel any better, I'd love to have The Recorder over any of those New Mutants that people keep banging on about. He'd make a great Classic figure, and the magazine would be a great trip down memory lane with all the various cosmic sagas the Recorders have been involved in.
In fact the only New Mutant I'm vaguely interested in is Warlock- an original and off-the-wall design.
Right then, a heads-up for Ted...Man-Thing is appearing in a Fear Itself mini-series called 'Fearsome Four'. It also stars Howard the Duck (yay!, Frankenstein's Monster (wooo!) and Nighthawk and She-Hulk. Yeah, I know that's FIVE- I don't get it either....

BD

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Thanks Bob, I've just finished reading some issues of Thunderbolts poor old Ted barely rates a couple of panels. He's reduced to being an interdimensional cab driver. Ah well, at least he's not as stinky (or as ugly) as Lockjaw.

Gremlin in the works said...

Sad news on the Dc front. At least on the Marvel side we have just been given an extension so things must still be looking good there.
Witht he New Mutants I think dan could confirm Warlock and the forum would put through mirage or wolfsbane. I love Warlock's design, as Bob said it's an off the wall design that a sculptor could really have fun with making into a 3D figure.

I'm just gald thay made it in at all, Robert. I banged on about them for years while the Xombies seemed to get what the hell they wanted. For a long time it seemed they were destined to be left out entirely.

We are nearly there now, with, for me, an old timer, just Lockjaw and Maximus to go. I don't hold out much hope for either particularly, since I discovered reverse psychology seemed to work well with EM, and hopefully might again.

Finally, White Tiger. I saw a post earlier that WT was the choice of one particular forum member, being Zombula. That's not the case. There are plenty of us who want him (yes, him) in.

As for that one forumite, he's done more for EMs promotion of this collection than anyone else I know. Zomb's dedication over there is extraordinary. Above and beyond doesn't come close to covering it. White Tiger for the collection, and White Tiger for Zomb.

Triton magazine, p.5: "I, who can locate one strand of seaweed within the bottomless ocean..."

And here I thought you see one piece of seaweed, you've seen 'em all! Stan, I love you, I really do, but I can't think of any reason why you'd need to find one particular strand of seaweed.

Bob, you are, as usual, a gent. While I don't expect to see the Recorder ever made, I am slightly surprised that he doesn't have more fans. He went on some huge adventures with Thor and even Odin has stood in the Asgardian throne room and said he was one of the Odinson's staunchest allies. The Recorder's spare analysis of situations contrasted beatifully with Thor's flowery descriptions. I thought they made one of the great comicbook pairs. (The Recorder also appears on the greatest Thor cover ever, #262!) Like you said, I try to keep from raining on anyone's parade when I see another X-character named, but they hold zero interest for me.

Robert said...

MGF, yep, I agree totaly that the important thing is they were made. Just had a wee thought this afternoon in traffic that I'd probably expect Karnak before Triton and decided to share it on here. Hopeful of seeing Lockjaw, not so sure about Maximus.

mgf said...

The biggest surprise for me was how early Crystal made it in, but I suppose this was part of the right-on aspect of having to be seen to be getting females into the collection asap.

I still don't get this desire to have loads of female characters included. After the undisputed classics they tail off alarmingly.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I have 2 or maybe three female wants .Mainly Princess Python. c'mon mgf it would be like having your own little Rita Hayworth....plus a big snake.

Gamora, Thundra, then it's meat and two veg all the way.

Robert said...

Again, I find myself agreeing wholeheartedly with your post, MGF. I am struggling to think of more than a handful of females still to be made that I am keen on and can name scores of male characters without trying. There is no balance in the Stan Lee Universe so why should we be trying to achieve it with the CMFC?

I agree with your list, Ted, with the addition of Hela and Karnilla.

John said...

Venus
Clea
Mary Jane Watson
Gamora
Vindicator
Pixie
Black Mamba
Phyla-Vell
Misty Knight
White Rabbit
Lady Deadpool
Namora

Those are my most wanted females. There are more, definitely, but those are the Top Wants.

Robert said...

And Clea, from John's list.

(What a memory! I was talking about her yesterday, for cripes' sake!)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hell's teeth how could i forget ..Hela, Karnilla . Clea always looked so damn hot, Strange always looked more interested in Wong. I may be right i may be wong

Robert said...

You shouldn't have had any chance to forget them, Ted, as Eaglemoss SHOULD HAVE MADE THEM ALREADY!!!

I mean, Silver Sable????

A sharing of favorites
Someone said the TOP 20 favorites in the poll do not appeal to all collectors. So? It's never been the case, not even when the CMFC was in its first 2 extensions. It's simply impossible to make everyone happy. And that is certainly not a sign that the CFMC cannot sustain more extensions.
The collection is becoming more and more amazing with every extension, and part of the experience is in learning and accepting more the characters who are someone else's favorites.

Casual buyer theories
I also disagree with the view that the fame/recognisability/popularity
of a character makes the figurine more attractive to casual buyer.
There are plenty of collectors who want figurines that simply look great in terms of character design (Marvel's) and in terms of quality of sculpt (EM's ability to reproduce that design).
If a character has both popularity and great design, even better. But I wouldn't worry too much. We still have hundreds of characters that resonate with Marvel readers and CMFC collectors for one reason or the other. For me, the CMFC is getting better and better, and I look forward to another 300 figurines. Bring 'em on.

In the end I buy every figure anyway. Even that god awful Dazzler (my favorite character)

Bob said...

What is wrong with Dazzler figure? I thought it was a great figure and captures her iconic look. I got her last month and display her proudly in my shelf.

mgf said...

I've occasionally wondered just how many casual buyers there are anymore. This collection is five years plus old, and the last figure in my newsagent was Silver Surfer. I suppose some still get theirs through newsagent orders but can it be all that many, and where on earth do the others buy them?

Of the three central London comic shops two don't stock either collection and haven't for a very long time.

One of the biggest errors of the collection - that awful movie Iron Man - seemed to be designed for passing eight year olds rather than the collectors. I don't know about you lot but I'd have got a short answer from my Mum if I'd asked for ten quid for a small lead figure. Instead of a grey version and a golden version of the dear old 60s buckethead that would have sold by the bushel we got the Friday afternoon daubings of a movie designer whose mind was more likely focussed on why a certain person's phone was still switched off.

The casual buyers, some of whom have the gobsmacking brassneck to pontificate long and loud on their meager wants on the forum, are just that. Casual. It my be a source of revenue, but cannot approach the subscribers even now I would have hoped.

Anonymous said...

I'd say that this collection's strength is that it's a dream come true for real Marvel fans who love the vastity of the Marvel Universe and are excited to explore all of its areas and the great variety of characters - each with a fantastic concept, design and back story that go beyond mere 'popularity'. It's a mythology, where each character is meaningful. The CMFC is a celebration of the House of Ideas.

Robert said...

On the subject of casual buyers, I've mentioned before that the location of the CMFC figures in Glasgow's FP is ridiculously high and basically rules out any casual buying. I am six foot one inch tall and I stood on my tippy-toes yesterday and still was barely able to pull down Triton. There was a woman next to me and she asked me if there was any other character after Ares. I answered not yet and, even though she was quiet tall and wearing heels, offered to help her lift Ares down. She declined and then, because she was basically at the limit of her reach, managed to knock down two figures that, if not for quick reflexes, would have dropped onto the floor. Clearly, Forbidden Planet (Glasgow) do not believe there are any casual buyers of the CMFC. You can reach most everything in the shop except statues, t-shirts and the CMFC.

Robert said...

Mind you, in slight contradiction of what I just said, I wonder if I am now a casual buyer? Ever since Silver Sable I have been much pickier. Before that I only skipped the more modern X-characters who I don't know. Now, it can include others as well...

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Ha casuals, whatever happened to that lad, .. y'kow that feller that admitted to owning a handful of figs , He began this campaign fer three chicks from Buffy or something. He actually had a following over on the forum like a wee maharishi.Although, spookily ennuf, i think the total number of figs he owned was the same as the number of comic appearaces by his "must have"... 7 i think.

Robert said...

That was One-of-Three or something like that, Ted. Someone said he was "boring because he kept going on about the Stepford Cuckoos and he disappeared shortly afterwards. Whether there's any connection, I have no idea...

bearbrian said...

I get all my figures online. Or I have to travel an hour or more to get to a shop that carries them. Then I get there and they have already sold the one or two pieces that they ordered. All the shops that carry them seem to do good business with then though. I really would like to know why the collection wasn't brought to the USA. It has to be some legal stipulation. Anyone know?

John said...

"It's never been the case, not even when the CMFC was in its first 2 extensions."

That's true. I had to get Storm from the first 20.

"There are plenty of collectors who want figurines that simply look great in terms of character design (Marvel's) and in terms of quality of sculpt (EM's ability to reproduce that design)."

Also true. I remember back when I thought I'd never try to get all of them because it would cost too much to try to track down the first 100 I missed, and still put down 40 bucks a month for new ones. I thought... Shocker and Yellowjacket is enough. Two of my Top favorites. Then I saw how Mandarin looked, a character I know nothing about. I thought, I can't own 2 favorites and a random character... But now I own every single CMFC release (minus the alternate colored versions...)

"I mean, Silver Sable???"

For the record, I love the MU and appreciate its vast and varied areas, and so am very glad Sable has made it in. Does she just not have enough impact in the MU as a floating mercenary between books, for some readers? I don't know. No more or less than Paladin, Domino, Misty Knight, or the like. Anyway, a fine choice and a decent sculpt.

"One of the biggest errors of the collection - that awful movie Iron Man.."

Again, just randomly praising EM, so they don't think we all hate all of their decisions, I thought the movie version was a fantastic sculpt. Whoever produced it did a Fantastic job. That said, like many have said, I would have much rather had a new character from the 616. We could have Terrax or Blastaar by now, but its still a great fig. (just shouldn't have been done in the first place... like Abomination's base...)

"I'd say that this collection's strength is that it's a dream come true for real Marvel fans who love the vastity of the Marvel Universe and are excited to explore all of its areas and the great variety of characters..."

I typically agree with everything Kirly says, and this is one of those cases. This is the perfect collection for me, exactly as it is, and I couldn't be happier. Its my biggest obsession next to Pokemon (yeah, I'll say it) and if I bought Jubilee, I'll buy any Marvel character.

"The casual buyers, some of whom have the gobsmacking brassneck to pontificate long and loud on their meager wants on the forum, are just that. Casual."

As I own EVERY figurine, do I have more of a vote in that I want Rocket Raccoon? Because that would be baller.

"Although, spookily ennuf, i think the total number of figs he owned was the same as the number of comic appearaces by his "must have"... 7 i think."

I just looked it up and they have 229 appearances according to comicvine.

No wish to insult the Sable fans, John, and was not directing that comment at anyone. However, I don't recall seeing her name ever mentioned on here. I had more than a few run-ins with that tedious little mooncalf. Always puzzled why the mods left him alone to spout his aggressive drivel.

From memory he owned very slightly more figures than my Great Aunt Hortense, and she doesn't even exist.

That time was a real low for the forum with several bona fide brain donors joining in a short period of time. I hope it's improved since as there are some decent people over there. And Dark Beast.
