A Tale of Two Captains...

Hi Guys,

My apologies for the lack of recent updates, I’ve been extremely busy and despite my best intentions, 7pm Friday arrives and the working week’s gone.

I’d like to start this update by announcing a further two figures for the extension:

Mar-Vell

Photon (Monica Rambeau)

Two very popular characters strangely enough both have gone under the codename Captain Marvel. Mar-Vell’s costume is pretty much obvious but what do you think about Monica’s? She’s had a few different costumes – I’m not going to list them all here, but if you know what you’d prefer let me know in the comments.

A very early sneak peek of Cannonball. As you can see we went for something a little special with this sculpt. We wanted to capture him taking off and were inspired by some of the rocket man style posters from the 50s.

This week I have the painted versions of Sasquatch and Puck, as you can see they are on separate bases.

And also an update to the paint stage of Pyro – we had to change this for Marvel.

I know, just a short update but life isn’t getting any quieter around the office. I’ll do my best for another longer update next week, if there’s any burning questions put them in the comments section and I’ll do my best to answer.

Have a good one.

DEPRESSING...
Hey bloggers, quite frankly I find it a little depressing that no attempt was made to respond and contribute to some of the ideas I suggested in my recent posts. I made it loud and clear that I'd like to pick your brains on special sagas, story arcs and Marvel realms that can be the basis of a new figurine collection.

While I was not expecting fireworks and a fanfare to celebrate my ideas, I'm of the opinion that a good blog is one where every blogger tries to contribute to every other blogger's thread. A belief in the power of dialogue, and in the amazing results that can be achieved through it - even when the original thread does not seem to interest you at first.

UPLIFTING
Any chance you might try to help me on the Marvel Universe Files project campaign?

Sometimes I sit here at my PC and random quotes just do a fly by. Actually, I don't need to be at the PC. LOL

Christian Bale's gruff Batman voice with that big fizzy bomb? Indeed it would be classic.

Myself, I'd settle for a big update once a month and have them the rest of the time at their PCs - in their working life - making me some more spiffing figures.

But that's just me.

@KIRLIANEYES

I am all for the idea if you are going to campaign for it to EM. Its just something that has been mentioned before. So go a step further if you want to be more proactive to actually get it done. Get a petition and I'll sign it.

Personally I think that not revisiting previous characters in different costumes and represented in different storyarcs and universes is a missed opportunity right now. Marvel fans would it that up. There is reason why the Marvel Legends figure series lasted so long, it mixed characters never made into toys before with the usual A listers in different costumes.

The idea is made of win. Just no one is listening.

LET MAKE THEM LISTEN!!!

I received Gorgon and Titania today too.

Titania is very nice but Gorgon is much smaller than I anticipated.
He is about the height of Kazar and looks a little puny - insnt he supposed to be 6'5"?
I think Gorgon needs a few months doing some squats to get him into shape.

Personally I would have liked the newer look Inhumans that are shown in all their glory in the Gorgon Magazine.

I really hope we get Triton in the collection - even though he smells like a kipper.

LAWay said...

I also received titania and gorgon. I dont care for either characters really, but titania I know more about and she looks decent, although would look better with her mouth shut. She looks like some blow up sex doll.

"And I would want some of the more important civvies in the collection. Gwen, MJ, Jarvis, Agatha Harkness."

Hear, hear, Barnabas. Please add Franklin and Valeria, Ross, Jones, Wong and of course JJJ to your list.

Now, how long till someone says I'm now posting under another alias...?

BobDiamond said...

I know it looks odd that I seem to have posted twice about the same stuff- but last night when I tried to leave the post it didn't register, so I tried again- that didn't register either... I come down this morning and they're both there! Weird.

Anyway, the old question of what makes a 'Civilian' as opposed to a SuperHero/ Villain...

There's a lot of blurred edges in the MU on this subject.
For instance, does having a superhero 'Name' make the character a superhero?
Do you have to have a costume?
Or powers?

I've always thought of Agatha Harkness in the Superhero catagory- she's a well established magic-user, who has taken an active, 'heroic' role in a number of stories. She doesn't have a 'Name' or costume however, but she does have a distinctive look.

'Luke Cage' isn't really a superhero name, nor does he wear a costume anymore, therefore is he anymore a SH than Agatha Harkness?

Franklin Richards is one of the most powerful mutants on the planet, and had his own SH name & costume while being in PowerPack for a while, therefore isn't he a SH rather than a 'civilian'? (I don't know much about his sister, but I believe she is 'super-intelligent' or something?)

Rick Jones is the ultimate SuperHero Groupie, and during his very complex history has been the side-kick of Cap (wearing the Bucky costume), sharing 'space' with 2 Cap Marvels, and now has a SH i.d as A-BOMB, (similar to Thunderbolt Ross being The Red Hulk). So both are super-powered, but what is more representative of them as potential figurines? SH persona or civvie support-act?

Even Wong has been seen using his Kung-Fu at times, and in the Universe X maxi-series he is given a costume, SH name and is part of a Team.

And... Jarvis was officially dubbed an actual Avenger in the recent Mighty Avengers comic, does that take him from Civvie status to SH status??

Amadeus Cho-???

Personally, I would love to have an Agatha Harkness fig, as long as she's got her cat, Ebony, with her. It would remind me of one of the greatest comics ever- when the FF met her for the first time, and she single-handedly defeats The Frightful Four! Stan and Jack at their best!

Excellent post, Bob. Loads of food for thought and another call for open-mindedness when considering new figures in the collection.

I take back all those names I called you at the last company do.

Oh, a wee note to Deadpool. No one hates you. A few might argue with you at times and hordes may disagree with your ideas - okay, I'm joking a bit with "hordes" - but you're a unique voice on here and it would not be the same without you.

I know many people have probably noticed that as I post things under this name...another name seems to not posted as much. No one has really pointed fingers my way, but I think it is only fair to come out and tell you the truth about the double identity I have and that I have tricked you all for this time.

I am the japanese spammer.

(PS-I am not actually the japanese spammer, I dont even know if it is spam, it could be a genuine japanese blooger excited about the collection but cannot type in english, I dunno, I cant translate)

CMFC IDEA
For all those fans of history and alternates, what about this idea?

A sister publication or a run of 'first appearance' characters. EM covering every classic Marvel character in their debut costumes.

Everyone wins.

John said...

jeez there's so much to comment on... this'll be random as hell...

LAWay's comment about being the spam blogger really made me laugh. :)

And I definitely agree with him that if you're desperately searching for who a villain is (can't remember the name or vaguely remember them at all) then they don't deserve to be made.

I do agree with Robert that some of these minor characters have a LOT of love, and if there is a genuine backing for the character, then I'm all for it.

I definitely agree that Bucky and General Ross (for example) are very worthy of inclusion due to all their contribution to Marvel lore as major characters. HOWEVER, Bucky Cap and Red Hulk are current fads that will be replaced. Bucky Cap, Iron Patriot... these things will change back to status quo eventually and if this is NOT the classic version of a character, then they shouldn't be made.

Think about it... look at Winter Soldier and tell me you didn't just want Bucky. We have Cat-Beast and he's returning to his "original" state soon (or did already. I don't know.) My point is, some of these major players are changing their costumes in big stories, but we all know it will eventually return. Xavier will always go back to his wheelchair. Spider-Man will always go back to the red and blue. Etc. etc. They should sooner announce Bucky-Cap as Frankencastle.

Bob, I really hope we don't get the original Marvel Boy. I want his current outfit which is what I think he'll mostly be known for. Marvel Boy only lasted a few issues, but the Uranian and Agents of Atlas have really seems to be the defining portrayal of the character.

And there was a game from a day or two ago involving villains from other heroes. Now this I am interested in, as I would LOVE to see a lot more villain representation. This'll take a while...

LAWay said...

Has anyone seen the new Steve Rogers redesign!? Looks like Bucky cap is here to stay for a lot longer than we thought. If anything, I think he has been Captain America longer than winter soldier.

John is in a very agreeing mood today. :P

Ponder this marvel fans. If red hulk and cap bucky are fads (hard to tell since we cant predict the future), but have more appearances than some minor characters, does that make these minor characters just as much a fad as these new designs? How do we know that Red Hulk wont be loved by fans in 40 years time despite never appearing in another comic, like alot of other minor characters suggested?

Ponder me that people, what is the difference?

Robert said...

Well, for one, the Red Hulk stories are crap, Leigh. That's why they won't be remembered with great fondness by many.

By comparison, when the Jackal first appeared, he wasn't around for long but by any standards the stories were memorable (even ignoring the introduction of the Punisher).

Quantity, not quality, still matters.

LAWay said...

Ah...but you cannot argue that Robert. It comes down to personal tastes in that case. You may think red hulk and his stories are crap, someone else may love them.

Some people dont even remember some characters from the marvel vaults that people want made into the collection, and yet, for whatever reason, good or bad, people will remember red hulk.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Who is this Red Hulk ? , Did those commies develop their own version? like their Cap America wannabee Red Guardian.

Robert said...

Ha! Okay, ya got me there, Leigh! Still, a turd smells bad whatever your subjective viewpoint. The only debate is over how bad the smell is. I could explain in detail why the Hulk titles are a mess right now, starting with deeply flawed characterisation and a diluted core concept, but I won't bore everyone with my ramblings. To reiterate the examples I gave earlier, no one would realistically compare the World War Hulks storyline with the Gwen clone-Jackal plot and not see a huge gulf in quality. (Andru's art on Spidey at the time is stunning.)

I'm also unsure that bad memories should be immortalised. I usually try and forget about bad stuff and remember the good stuff. So storylines like Maximum Carnage, which was rather poor, mean that I have little interest in the likes of Shriek, for instance. Now, I do want to see Jackal and Tarantula because of the Gwen clone saga...

Robert said...

Red Hulk, a.k.a "Rulk" (!), is, well, a red Hulk who's intelligent and has an attitude not unlike Mr. Fixit, Ted. I won't spoil it by revealing who he is, except to say that his alter-ego has changed personality quite dramatically and you won't recognise him. Numerous other characters are back from the dead, including one guy who had an aerial battleship crashland with him in it a few decades back and another who was in some sort of suspended animation. And Doc Samson has changed personality and is an evil genius with bad ass attitude! And Rick Jones is a new Abomination called A-Bomb. There's also a son of Hulk called Ska'ar, a red She-Hulk, another green She-Hulk and a gamma-irridiated parrot called Parrot-Hulk. (Sorry, that's next month.) Frankly, I buy the comics and I have lost track of what the hell is going on. As a faithful follower of Greenskin since '76 I am considering chucking his comics. Avoid at all cost.

Just noticed I signed off with "Quantity, not quality" in a previous post when of course I mean the reverse.

LAWay said...

hehe it's not as if I read any red hulk or care for the character, thought it was a stupid move anyway. I wouldnt mind having him as a figurine though, a cool big figure like that is welcome in my collection. Can always paint him green then anyway. ;)

Surely...SURELY we must get an update tomorrow. Maybe in celebration of England qualifying to the next round of the world cup.

Any specific england related superheroes?

John said...

Robert, LAWay enjoys the direction of the Hulk comics right now and is totally justified. Calling Red Hulk a "turd" is the same as him calling Recorder a turd. Its unfair. If you're upset about a change in personality... I'd counter with the difference in personality between Bruce Banner and The Hulk.

However, to reiterate my point on fads vs. iconic representation of a character; General Ross is mostly known for his "General" appearance, not his Hulk appearance. I can't read the future, but its too recent to know if this is gong to be his direction for the next 20 years. I doubt it. The classic incarnation of Ross is in uniform, complete with mustache. But again, this is a "agree to disagree" argument with LAWay as he views a different costume as its own character and I do not. I see the person under the mask and only want 1 representation of them. We're both right.

Now, for the last... maybe 4 hours, I've been going through lists of villains, and thinking up my perfect list of villains I'd like to see added. This is in order of who I'd want, but in categories by hero (as per the rules of the game from 100 posts ago.) I tried to limit it to those I liked and felt deserving, or those that I would simply be ecstatic to see make the cut...

@BobDiamond
you diamond geezer!

Thanks for the list of Marvel Universe Files, the new EM/Marvel figurine collection that we must campaign for.

You came up with some great ideas. I would buy each and every one of those boxsets... if they existed!

MORE BRAINSTORMING ON THE
MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES project,
please bloggers!
Submit your ideas for boxsets based on Marvel sagas, story arcs, realms, etc

@LAWay
Glad you like my Marvel Universe Files idea. I am being proactive, and am preparing a presentation as the basis for a campaign. That's why it'dbe great if you could submit a list of MU Files you'd like to see. You have interesting tastes and see the MU from an original angle, so I'd love to see what you come up with.

@Robert, Deadpool, John
You too.

LAWay said...

I know what you mean John. I aint a fan of red hulk and have never read him in a comic. I didnt like the artwork when he first came in so didnt pick the comics up. But I know that Ross is a deserving character for a figurine, but personally I would prefer the red hulk figure just because I think it would be a more impressive figurine. But then again, thats why we need alternates.

@KIRLIANEYES
I dont think there are many storylines that had special costumes and versions of characters. My point of view would be eras, or just a characters history.

Iron Man Armours - a multipack or series of Iron Man armour so that it could include specials like the Hulkbuster armour.

Jim Lee X-men - Self explanatory, the xmen designs that were in the awesome 90s cartoon series.

House of M - Loved the idea and the redesigns of the different characters.

AoA - More distinct designs.

Spiderman - so many different costumes, clones, different universes, mutations...would be great.

Ultimates - Distinct designs compared to the regular marvel universe.

I would also like to see figurines in the style of comicbook artists. That would be really cool, and would allow for you to have 10 spiderman figurines, but all of them being unique, much like the batman black and white statues.

Thats me brainstorming done for now, I have to get on with some work.

John said...

Kirianeyes, all my set of 3 or 4 would have to be character we haven't seen yet... cause that's how I roll.

Teams we haven't seen yet, genres or just themes that tie character together;

-Agents of Atlas
Jimmy Woo, Gorilla Man, M-11, Uranian, Venus, Namora (in any combination) :)

-The Enforcers
Fancy Dan, Montana, Ox

-The Warriors Three
Fandral, Hogun, Volstagg

-Heralds of Galactus
Firelord, Terrax and Stardust

-Clone Saga
Jackal, Kaine, Spidercide

-New X-Men
Pixie, Surge, Rockslide

-Hellfire Club
Sebastian Shaw, Sage, Selene

-Supernatural
Brother Voodoo, Nightmare, Clea

-Young Avengers
Wiccan, Hulkling, Speed, Patriot

-Inhumans
Maximus, Lockjaw, the Beyonder

-Initiative
Trauma, Gauntlet, Hardball, Komodo

-Mobsters
Tombstone, Hammerhead, Mr. Negative

I'd like a Jonas Harrow, Tinkerer, Mendel Stromm "Mad Scientist" pack!

Serpent Society, Other-Worldly, Circus of Crime, Golden Age...

Or using any of the rogues gallery ideas from my last post (i.e. Iron Man villains; Ghost, Grey Gargoyle, Blizzard.)

The real question is; a lot of us would buy these multi-packs, but would a casual buyer put down the money for a 3-pack? Put Ghost on a shelf and people would buy him. Same with Blizzard or Grey Gargoyle. Put them together and people hesitate.

LAWay said...

@John

just stepping in here.
While someone may not buy them as a multipack because of the price, those characters are more suited to this collection as individual characters.

But or Kirlianeyes project, you could do redos, and so back up any minor baddies with big name baddies or heroes.

But an Iron Man alternate version (there are enough of him) in a double pack with each villain, and they would fly off shelves.

Anonymous said...

Great stuff, LAWay and John. Thanks for the ideas.

John, actually I think that 3 figurines together have a special appeal. There's something about the number 3. It's as if it brings out the full Power of the Idea.

To see Terrax, Firelord and Stardust together in one pack, that would look so attractive. Then put them in a box called Heralds of Galactus, accompanied with the dedicated magazine, and hey presto you've got an issue of EM Marvel Universe Files that makes you go WOW! I'm absolutely sure this line would prove hugely successful and I'd like EM to try
and test it.

LAWay said...

@Kirlianeyes

I think you should get to work on some concepts. What would the packaging look like for this? What would the magazine front cover look like? How is this brand different in its look? Logo? Mock up some stuff in photoshop, get some market research asking the forums who would buy the special, subscribe to the idea, how much they would pay etc.

Then pitch it to EM showing that people do want it. :)

I'm still alive, just been more active on the Super Hero Figurine Forum than I have here. lol I've been quite the busy bee promoting the Stepford Cuckoos there. ;) and unfortunately the recent updates haven't been very interesting to me. Hopefully an update tomorrow will change that!

As far as the recorder though, I surprisingly enough HAVE heard of the Recorders (hopefully we mean the same thing lol) though I know nothing about them other than their appearance and their purpose.

Must be an update today, surely...

When a blog comments section reaches over 400, I think its time to start a new blogpost, even if it isnt a huge update.

The forums are quite chaotic because of multiple threads, but this blog gets an astonishing amount of feedback. I am not saying we need more updates, regular updates of a week or once a fortnight in line with the magazine release, even if the update is to say about the release of a new mag, maube with turnaround pics of the figurine accompanying it.

A quick update for people to move on to and also a way to get feedback on an issue.

When you have come to the point where you are having to re-do characters that have already been done to fill the slots, (twice in the case of Captain Marvel if you include the white variant), you have lost your way and it is time to wind the collection down and leave on a high.

Given the length of time this collection has been going on for, the cost and the seemingly never-ending supply of extensions, I find it insulting as someone who has been here since the very beginning that we are being asked to fork out 3 times for the same character. Isn't the point of the collection individualism? Every instalment a different character not a re-hash of an 'already done' one?

Come on Richard: Shape up.
