A Tale of Two Captains...

Hi Guys,

My apologies for the lack of recent updates, I’ve been extremely busy and despite my best intentions, 7pm Friday arrives and the working week’s gone.

I’d like to start this update by announcing a further two figures for the extension:

Mar-Vell

Photon (Monica Rambeau)

Two very popular characters strangely enough both have gone under the codename Captain Marvel. Mar-Vell’s costume is pretty much obvious but what do you think about Monica’s? She’s had a few different costumes – I’m not going to list them all here, but if you know what you’d prefer let me know in the comments.

A very early sneak peek of Cannonball. As you can see we went for something a little special with this sculpt. We wanted to capture him taking off and were inspired by some of the rocket man style posters from the 50s.

This week I have the painted versions of Sasquatch and Puck, as you can see they are on separate bases.

And also an update to the paint stage of Pyro – we had to change this for Marvel.

I know, just a short update but life isn’t getting any quieter around the office. I’ll do my best for another longer update next week, if there’s any burning questions put them in the comments section and I’ll do my best to answer.

Have a good one.

excellent jjj LAWay. one day in the not too distant future i hope the strategic gap i have left in my spiderman section is filled with the lead rendition of that.

i have published an empassioned plea for votes for jjj on the forum campaign thread but i imagine it will fall on deaf ears :-(
so i'm counting on you rich. you got my hopes up a few weeks ago so don't let me down and put jjj in the collection. and if you want to make me really happy, how about nico minoru as well ;-)

LAWay said...

Glad I managed to capture what you envisioned MM. Maybe a JJJ and Stan Lee double pack? ;)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hang in there MM. come voting time over on the forum everyone starts whoring there spare " slots" around
I have promised one guy a Thunderstrike nomination in return for his nomination of Bloodstone , I'm more than happy to vote JJJ in return fer yer Ulysses love.

Robert said...

So what you are saying, Ted, is that if I promise my votes to other folk I could get a pile of folk voting for the Recorder?

How many votes do you get?

And how do I sign up for this forum thingie...? ;)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Well if i remember correctly, for the last extension the forum got to pick 3 characters , all forum members can nominate 5 characters. This time round i am nominating Bloodstone and Princess Python leaving me 3 slots you can do whatever you like with the slots. people trade them to try and ensure as many nominations for there fav character as possible.
Recorder for a Bloodstone ferinstance? :)
Oh and you can sign up over at the superhero figurine forum Robert.

Robert said...

When you first mentioned the trading of picks earlier, Ted, I thought it sounded rather political and I wasn't keen. A minute or two later and I realised that you can help folk get their favourites, and my feeling reversed. Although I have no personal interest in Bloodstone, I hope you get him one day. Always nice to see collectors get their favourites, especially the characters that have never appeared in any other collection. The day Max got Siryn had a ripple effect that made everyone happy (well, nearly everyone) and was arguably the best day on here.

mighty_marvel said...

just thought of a new game. in honour of the world's greatest sporting cometition what marvel characters would you pick in a football (soccer) line-up?

Goalkeeper - Spiderman. spidey sense and fantastic jumping and reflexes. would there be any way past the webbed wonder?

Full Back - Nightcrawler. Could be up helping the attack and back helping the defence in the blink of an eye

Centre Back - Mr Fantastic. High balls not a problem for this defender

Centre Back - Colossus. You need a tough enforcing defender alongside the quicker rangey one.

Full Back - Beast. Because he's on every other Marvel team. He might as well be on this one

Winger - Daredevil. Enhanced agility and radar sense would allow him to walk through defences

Midfield - X-Man. You need someone who can read the game in midfield and who better than one of the most powerful precogs

Midfield - Longshot. Sometimes a little bit of luck is a necessity

Winger - Quicksilver. Need some speed up the flanks

Striker - Gambit. You want a striker who can do something special with the ball and opposition keepers will think twice about stopping Gambit's shots.

Striker - Bullseye. Accuracy very important for a striker

Manager - Taskmaster

mighty_marvel said...

that's a deal ted. would like bloodstone (and elsa too) so will gladly use one of my votes for him in return for a vote for JJJ

mighty_marvel said...

and another little game for those not interested in the beautiful game. (i admit i got the idea for this one off the forum) as it's fathers day this weekend, what marvel dads would you like to see in the collection

obviously for me it's the father of man-wolf - J Jonah Jameson

Robert said...

Brilliant post, MM. Clever stuff. Especially like your reasoning for Beast's inclusion. Very funny!

Robert said...

Well, we could make the First Father of the Marvel Universe happy by including his son!

Okay, that's cheating.

The High Evolutionary. He was the nearest thing to a father that Adam Warlock ever had, and the pathos in that statement should count for something!

Hm. Still cheating. I'll get back to you on this...

Robert said...

Odin! Of course! He's the All-Father!!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

erm...Father Ted?
i would have to be done in my classic 70's look.
or Zeus.. sorry PA it,s damned heat, i'm just talking crazy :)

LAWay said...

Goalkeeper - Blob. He wont have to move, just stand there. Nothing would get past him.

Full Back - Iron Man. Quick and robust, and doesnt have a bad shot on him either.

Centre Back - Captain America, the perfect athlete and a great leader of men.

Centre Back - Colossus. No one will mess with him.

Full Back - Multiple Man. Can create good cover at the back, but also can be deployed any on the pitch. At the same time.

Winger - Spiderman. Speed to zip down the wings, alert to avoid tackles.

Midfield - Wolverine. You need one midfielder thats a little tough, to make their mark on the opposition. He has plenty of experience too.

Midfield - Hawkeye. Pinpoint passing.

Winger - Quicksilver. Speedy.

Striker - NightCrawler. Can beat any offside trap and get into pivotal positions at crossings in a flash of a bamf.

Striker - Bullseye. Deadly finishing.

Manager - rof X. He can read any team tactics like no other. Infact, he could just make the other team lose from the tactical area.

World cup has been quite dull I think. Most matches 1-0, or 1-1. Not huge excitement.

HI Thor8 going back to your comments regarding the "original group" of posters who frequented this blog - nearly brings tears to my eyes...

Its scary looking back through the old blogs - but one over riding theme is that with each new batch of bloggers, we seem to repeat on the same subjects (re-do's etc) and endless listers - but they all have a right for space.

For me much of the fun has gone, the legendary PAdam "Vs" the world blog fight - remember the one I think he called the Blob a Fag**t - now CBR I never used the word, king Chris may come out of retirement lol!!

I still read and will continue to post - we just need to show each other a level of respect we ourselves would hope to receive.

And remember us old timers Rich - what about Stingray (I thought worth a shot).....

So how many "Original Bloggers" do any of you remember?

Baroni - where are you buddy?
CBR
King Chris
Dan the Man
MMarvel
Travis

And of course PAdam and Thor8

Who's missing?????

Robert said...

"For me much of the fun has gone."

I'm curious why, Jacadoo? You still have knowledgeable, interesting and sometimes off-the-wall posters (some, like Ted, Leigh and DP, with rather cool artistic talents), controversy, the odd spat, wild ideas, trips down memory lane, games, conspiracy theories, wisecracks, insider information from Dan the Man and coupons to buy camping stoves (okay, I made up the last one). What's not to love...?

CONSTRUCTIVE USE OF THE BLOG
... AND WHY SOME BLOGGERS LEAVE!
This is going to be a bit controversial, I think. At first, ever since I discovered this blog in Jan 2010, I've enjoyed the different characters and comments of the regular bloggers, the funny & surreal ones and the informed and knowledgeable ones. However, recently I've started to feel that sometimes this blog is a bit abused/misused. If people want to talk and reminisce all things Marvel, sometimes I wish they would do that somewhere else, maybe on their Facebook walls or on a blog dedicated to all things Marvel. Me, I prefer bloggers and posts that focus on the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection. This blog is here for that. If you were in the shoes of EM & Rich, I wonder if you'd want to spend time reading so many posts that are practically irrelevant to the CMFC. I wonder if EM could sustain this blog if it became vastly irrelevant to the CMFC, and I'm a bit concerned. I like this blog as an opportunity to engage in a dialogue with EM & Rich, but feel that we are not making the most of it. Sorry to rain on your parade! I love all your posts... it's just that some of them do not need to be on this blog! There, I said it. (Boo, hiss, etc)

PS. See how I title my posts in capital letters. That's a good way of giving structure to an otherwise chaotic flow of comments.
I'd be great, methinks, if all posts had a title or repeated the title of posts they are linked to.
At least I'd know which ones I'm interested in. And EM & Rich would probably benefit from that too!
???

Nice hearing from you again jacadoo. You listed some old fellow bloggers we haven't heard from for awhile and as I said before I wonder if they still read this blog even if they no longer post? C'mon guys let us know if you're still out there. You asked who's missing jacadoo, well there are quite a few such as...

Miss Medusa
Lipstick
Ghost
Grim Reaper
Asura
Marvel_boy
Jarvis69
buffduffdan
Anthony Stark
Ryan Maxwell
Travis
pippin gold
S.H.I.E.L.D.Boy
Killer Frost
Banshee

and many others who have vanished from this site.

As for reasons why people have left I guess many of the reasons mentioned have their weight. It's always good to have diversity and freedom to express oneself, but respect should never take a backseat to these. Many comments made here have been done in jest, people should not take it personally and learn how to laugh at one's self once in awhile. I also agree that we overdo it by side tracking from the purpose of this blog just a little too far sometimes, even though most of the subjects are quite interesting maybe we should try and keep it within the boundaries of this blog. Well any who I hope to hear from my fellow bloggers both old and new and hope to see The Swordsman confirmed on this extension soon.

Kirlianeyes, I have to agree. Usually, I like to read everyone's comments... but there have been times where I'd been away for a couple days and suddenly there's 50-100 new posts, and MOST off-topic. So I skim. And if "I" skim, I'm sure Rich skims, and if Rich skims, I'm sure he's missing some of our heartfelt requests, concerns, and comments.

-Mighty_Marvel's Father Game:
I do like these list-style games, as its a quick way to show desires for characters, but in different ways.

-Shaman
-J. Jonah Jameson
-High Evolutionary
-Nightmare
-Jackal

I'm counting Kaine, Spidercide, Ben Reilly, etc. as Jackal's children. And Nightmare's son, Trauma, is another character I greatly want.

Pyro doesn't look right to me , and i notice that other collectors aren't happy about the sculpt either.

I think personally , eaglemoss should re-do him and make him look better.
perhaps while that is being done , we could get another character to replace him in that slot.
And then place the new and improved pyro with avelanche in a double pack special instead.

On a positive note though - Sasquatch + Puck look fantastic.

Och Boo Hoo.
My first comment on this blog nearly 2 yrs ago? was to ask what special event would mark the 100th issue, a bag of apples?, A sausage on a stick for every subscriber?
I WILL CONTINUE TO BE AS RANDOM AND/OR SURREAL AS I PLEASE , ALTHOUGH I WILL NOW HIGHLIGHT IT IN CAPITALS .
The forum has a cmfc blog that i will grant you is a lot more.. earnest .. sometimes so very, very earnest sometimes staler than the loaf from the last supper.
Rich, must have trawled through some random nonsense to quote the classic Eaglemoss investigates line from MD.
If you have some pearl of wisdom that Rich simply must hear then i'm sure he will battle his way through the irrelevant posts like a brave little soldier.
The forum is where most of the decisions are made concering this collection , figurine choices, costume choices etc.
It is the more laid back and downright bizzare/ nostalgic feel to this blog that keeps me reading, I do enjoy the varied threads over on the forum . but this blog has always had a unique charm of it's own.
BIG RUSTY JUGS!!!

I've been one of the worst sinners but I'm going to try hard to keep my posts about the CMFC from now on. Ted, let's see if we can find somewhere more appropriate for the random Marvel stuff. Any ideas?

QUESTIONS FOR RICH
1. The only civilian that gets mentioned with any seriousness is JJJ. That seems to be partly because of the sheer incredible volume of appearances and partly because of his "adversary" status (rather than just a supporting character who does not drive the plot in any way). However, what do you think about the possibility of other prominent civilians who are not just background characters, characters like Rick Jones, "Thunderbolt" Ross and Franklin Richards, appearing sometime?

2. Any decision yet on the Alpha Flight double-pack?

3. The "secret project"? Can you tell us anything or even hint when you might tell us something?

Yep the JJJ/Bloodstone nominations are a definate deal.
I understand what you mean regarding the blog, but most " sensible, on topic" posts, are usually done by the first 20 or 30 posts then they all flock off back to the forum.:)
then we would be left with 42 posts per update . regarding the inclusion/omission of Forge

jimbob said...

Re-do Pyro?:0

please EM!:)

Robert said...

Jimbob, I posted some questions in the hope Rich might answer one or more of them but it's pretty obvious that the pressing question from the last week is the Pyro figure. If we get a post this week, that's something he will really have to respond to. Eaglemoss must be concerned by the almost universal negative reaction. I can't remember any other figure getting such a backlash. Can any of the folk who've been posting here longer remember anything like that?

solo said...

PYRO

I've never seen so many complaints in all my days , surely this will have a major impact on sales figures.

jimbob said...

I think this shows how much us 90s x-men fans want as much accuracy in the figs.

Pyro,Avalanch,etc...may have not done much in the comics, but has left a big impact on us through the 90S X-MEN Animated series that alot of us loved and remeber, and i mean alot watched that show.

Most of the request for re-dos has been about x-men costume to be changed to the costume we saw them from the tv series.Mystique,Beats,Rouge,
Sabertooth.

Dont no why Marvel wanted EM to choose these costumes,I mean i dont think it will make me go out there and buy comics that these characters appear in wearing these costumes chosen by Marvel.

mighty_marvel said...

i'd have liked cyclops done in the costume from the 90s animated series too. loved that show. would customise a load of animated series looks if i was any good at painting.

and i'd have liked jean grey as jean grey rather than as phoenix. but not from the series this time. in the green dress with yellow mask

Barnabas said...

Lordy! The sun must be making everyone a bit testy methinks. Love Pyro/Hate Pyro. Hmmmmmm
I'm not so worried about scale. The Star Wars Figurines stuck to that and the figures were small compared to the DC and Marvel sets, and yet the price was the same. Yoda was miniscule. EM are producing a good quality product of the characters we love.
Anyway.
I said on the forum at least 18 months ago that JJJ should be made and was shot down in a hail of naysayers. Glad to see the world is coming around to my way of thinking! hehehe.
Finally from me. I like the idea that we're getting more dynamic poses for the characters. It's kind of phase 2 of the collection. AND IF EM went for re-dos and that's only an if, We could have say, only for an example before you all kill me, the F4 in dramatic monster mashing poses on seperate bases that fit together and make one big standard base.

mighty_marvel said...

wouldn't mind a celestial mega. asked this question last time and didn't get much response but will try again. which celestial should it be?

the most likely in my opinion are

the dreaming celestial
arishem the judge
one above all

jimbob said...

MODOK i a dead cert for the next mega-special.

Dont think Celestial will have a chance for a while,3 votes????

Sauron 39
Lockjaw 33
Mojo 28
Strong Guy 25
Warpath 22
Odin 21
MODOK 18
Atlas 14
Dragon Man 12
Hulkling 10
Shadow King 9
Brood Queen 8
Goliath (Bill Foster) 8
Rockslide 8
Stilt Man 8
Wendigo 8
Ch'od 7
Nimrod 6
Terrax 6
Groot 5
Onslaught 5
Giant Man 4
Hela 4
Madame Web 4
Old Lace 4
Arishem / Celestial 3

Prefer to go through normal specials than force a mega-special that people dont really want.

I think next year special list will be-

Sauron
Omega Red (already in)
MODOK
Odin
Lockjaw

Maybe a double pack Aurora & Northstar?

Hopefully we will get some updated news on them tomorrow.

ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RICH

4. Has there been any discussion or serious thought to including a generic character, specifically a Hydra agent, AIM technician or Kree soldier (who could be wearing Captain Marvel's original green-and-white unifrom)?

jimbob said...

Just one last point on why Pyro should be re-done.

He will tower over Magneto, the founder of the Brotherhood.

Magneto 6'2"
Pyro 5'10"

I think if the fig stood up straight it would be really tall, and this is what bothers most collectors right now.

Looking forward to tomorrow.

SECRET PROJECT & PYRO & STUFF

To be honest, I dont mind the idea of a subject to comments. Not every comment needs it I guess.

The super secret project. They said maybe not enough fans of street fighter, or enough characters to pay the license fee.

What about...
MARVEL VS CAPCOM!!!
Maybe a chess set, maybe just lead figures. It makes sense. The love or marvel and street fighter, its win win.

PYRO
He sucks. Everyone has said he is too big.
"oh, but he is standing next to spidey"
Who is supposed to be the same height as him. Its just a bad scale, a bad pose and the paints dont look great. I too would like him being held back and release him either with, or next to a release of Avalanche.

STUFF
Its cool to see some new names on the blog that I havent seen before, even though they may be stating why they dont come here anymore.

I too agree the discussion should predominantly be about the CMFC, but after the initial update and discussion and we lead up to the next update, its only fair the topic on conversation to turn to something different.

And finally, if we are entering a new 'phase' of the CMFC with more dynamic figurines, I say redo.

Redo some old characters in new costumes. Cut the BS, we are ALL disappointed in some way that out favourite characters were not in the costume or pose that we would have liked. Now is the chance to do it, eiter making them specials, 2 packs, or vary 1 in every 4 or 6 figurines.

Basically, if you are going to screw with the collection now and create figurines that no longer fit in with the 120+ already established, you may as well throw away any initial rules you had.

Personally, if it means getting more figurines of arguably the best characters, I am all for it!

PS
my computer has a nasty virus that may lose all of my work this year that I havent backed up, so I may be posting this in a bitter mood, or I could be using it as an excuse. You will never know.
MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.

Geez, if I were Kirlianeyes, I'd be pretty mad at the reactions to his idea. It was just a thought...

Anyway, random stuff... I really want a MODOK. I'm very happy with Cyclops costume. I don't like the choices of Storm, Mystique, Warlock, or some others' costumes, but I'd still just rather move on to new characters. Eternity would make a great Mega Special. We need Lockjaw. Street Fighter has more than enough characters, ~50.

One last request time from me;

Agents of Atlas
-The Uranian
-Namora
-etc.

-Brother Voodoo
-J Jonah Jameson
-Wiccan

And my word verification is "anness" which sounds an awful lot like...

"However, what do you think about the possibility of other prominent civilians who are not just background characters, characters like Rick Jones, "Thunderbolt" Ross and Franklin Richards, appearing sometime?"

Well, Rick Jones and General "Thunderbolt" Ross have a great deal more chance to be included now. Since they have superhero identities. Rick Jones being A-Bomb, the new Abomination. And Ross being the Red Hulk. Hell, we could even get Betty Banner as the Red She-Hulk at some point.

I think Franklin and Valeria both have a shot eventually also. In fact, it would be kinda cool to get them in their FF T-Shirts as pack-ins with large special of Dragon Man.

I've been wracking my brains and just cannot remember the name of the ememy.

I thought it was something like Space Wasp or wisp or phantom or something like that.

And now for something completely different.

Amalgam characters.

Which two marvel characters would make a good single character if you put them together.

I'll start: -

Iron Man and Modok - while caught in the heat of battle a space time anomoly fused the dna and technology of these two characters together and spat them out of a wormhole creating -

Iron Modok.

This is a tough little game so only the most hardy bloggers may give this ago.

Warning - this could harm your sanity....or even sanitation ... you have been warned.

I have another....

Maximus the Mad hired Deadpool to spy on Blackbolt and the other Inhumans.
A battle ensued and Deadpool was obliterated by a single word of Black Bolt.
However the fine particles of blood and snot that were left were inhaled by Black Bolt with disasterous connsequences.

Deadpools healing factor kicked in and mutated Black Bolt into the dreaded DP BB hybrid known as .......BLACKPOOL

HYDRA AGENT VS TITANIA

Will buy Titania this weekend, look at her for a few seconds, take her home, open the box some time that night or the next day and plunk her on one of the villains shelves and, well, forget about her. Now, if was a Hydra agent, I'd be quite excited, would no doubt buy three and, soon as I got home, I would carefully place them all next to Mama Fury's favourite son, admire them a bit and go make a cuppa with a smile on my face.

-Sigh-

No John, you don't have to pick from the 5 established groups, just as long as they are 5 different groups or families.

FRANKLIN AND VALERIA - CBRBEAST'S IDEA

Great idea. Can't see the majority of collectors happy to surrender a regular slot to two children, whatever their surname, so this would seem to be the best solution.

HYDRA AGENTS

Sorry to go on about this but it's been rolling around in my head most of tonight. Have revised my original estimate of how many I would buy from three to five. (You can apply a similar rule of thumb to how many AIM technicians and Guardsmen I would buy.)

I forgot what the game is. Seems like the update is Ares did you say? Looking forward to seeing it.

The lists seem long considering the rule was the collection was coming to a close. Surely it should be a very strict number of just 5 figurines at the most?

Mine
-SPiderman2099
-Man Spider
-DopplerGanger
-Arachne
-Spidergirl

I made my own rules.

NEW GAME!
Like Thor8 said, the collection is going to end. TOMORROW! Unless CMFC can save it with 1 figurine. BUT, this figurine has to be a redo. What would be your redeeming redo to save the collection, or would you let it die?

Huh!?

Captain America Bucky.

After mentioning A.I.M., I went off and had a look at some reference sites. Some reasons why we should get a generic A.I.M. technician.

1. Long history going back to 1966.
2. An impressive 185 appearances (although I thought it was more).
3. Many of their appearances are in high profile comic titles, notably Captain America.
4. They are still active.
5. They invented the Cosmic Cube, arguably the greatest and most iconic weapon in the history of the MU.
6. They invented two characters that have been suggested as specials: the Super-Adaptoid and MODOK.
7. They look different to other characters, especially the helmets.
8. Many collectors would buy more than one, which would make Eaglemoss happy from a financial standpoint.

I would prefer a HYDRA agent but as the above makes clear, an A.I.M. technician has a decent case for inclusion, too. Well, Rich? Any chance?

Robert said...

A.I.M. CAMPAIGN (cont.)

9. Created by Stan and Jack.
10. Also involved in the creation of Red Hulk. From Marvel Database: "It is later revealed that A.I.M. helped General Thunderbolt Ross and Doc Samson create the Red Hulk."

Am I winning anyone over...?

John said...

About A.I.M., I know I'd buy one and be VERY happy with it. The real question EM probably has is; some collectors are going to buy more than 1, but many casual collectors may just not care if its not a specific person. Are the few that buy multiple really going to offset that?

Gremlin said...

I would like to know how well Multiple Man sold because quite frankly it's a very similar situation. I know I bought three and there were many collectors who did just the same.

The idea of generic units has been around for years and I fully support it. Hydra, AIM, SHIELD and the Kree are the natural choices but lets not forget the Brood. A good sculpt of them would add a whole new dimension to the collection.

You could slip a generic unit into the regular lineup and have the mag detailing the history of the organistation they come from.

OK I am sure some people will be up in arms because it's taking the spot away from an actual character but as has been pointed out....many people would buy multiple copies which I am sure would make up for it.

BobDiamond said...

On the subject of Generic characters...

I would love to have a Hydra agent and an AIM tech, as I think historically these groups have made way more impact on the MU than most of the Super-baddies we're suggesting for the future (and a lot of the ones we've had).
However, I don't think I would buy more than one of each- not because of cost (I'm in it for the long-haul, or until it becomes 'The New Universe Figurine Collection'), but more to do with storage/ shelf space unfortunately.
I never expected this amazing series to go on this long- 2 cabinets full already- and scratching my head all the time thinking where I'm going to put them next!
Pretty mundane I Know- but that's the reality..

Thing is, I REALLY want a Baron Strucker Fig. (Steranko Hydra Leader costume w. Satan Claw- my 1st post way-back-when..) and unless EM do a double pack (unlikely), I don't think we'd see both Strucker and Agent separately.

More of a chance with MODOK and AIM tech as they are not seen quite as tightly interconnected.

GROUP CHARACTERS

DIdnt know how to title it, but you know what I mean with Hydra, AIM, etc

Personally, I get why they should be made into figurines. They have backstory, and they have proven to sell in other figure lines. Not sure on the success of them, but they were made. I think as a 'non character', it opens up to produce figurines of lead civilian characters.

I wouldnt buy more than one for sure, unless they were posed different, and I would still have a rethink about that. Ideally if you make these type of characters, a good use of a 2 or 3 pack, put them all on one base, make it worth buying.

Something that does perplex me is that if you are willing to buy more of 1 figurine that is exactly the same, like multiple man and these group characters, why are you not willing to buy redos? Its buying more of the same character, but even more reason to do so with a different pose and costume.

I am not saying they shouldnt be made, they are important to the marvel universe. I just think if you are delving into the market of people buying more than one of a single character, then you open the doors to revisit older figurines and redo them.

Peace.

GENERIC CHARACTERS (CONTINUED)

Bob, it's all your own fault that you don't have room for lots of HYDRA agents. If you will clutter up your shelves with DC numpties, then I have zero sympathy! :)

I did like your idea of a MODOK special coming with an A.I.M. technician, Bob, but I'd prefer the A.I.M. technician taking up a regular slot so I could buy at least three, maybe five, of them. You also make a great point, Bob, about "impact". I would need to check for exact facts, nevertheless I can't imagine Titania (for instance) has as many appearances in as many titles as HYDRA agents or A.I.M. technicians. Certainly, she's not been around nearly as long and outside of Creel she doesn't have connections to loads of other characters like Strucker, the Adaptoid, Kubrick, Red Hulk, the present Spider-Woman, and so on.

Generic characters have a strong case for inclusion and have a long history that would easily fill a magazine.

BobDiamond said...

I don't want to say you're predictable Rob, but... I was just waiting for your line about the DC figs!! :)

Also, I was trying to say the opposite about MODOK and a generic AIM tech- it's because they're NOT so closely linked as Strucker is to Hydra( MODOK often seems to work independantly of AIM, as well as having such a unique look)- that I thought there was a bigger chance of having them both included as separate figures (which is what you want anyway).

Now, LAWay...you had a question about redos...if we were allowed/ had-to-have only one...

I would choose '70s Avengers-style' Beast, so that I could have him in my Avengers set too.

It was a very close call with 'Neal Adams-style' Havok, which is such an original and Classic look that I can't believe they didn't do it...

BD

Robert said...

Strucker helped found HYDRA and A.I.M built MODOK, so they both have close ties. MODOK was even "assassinated" after A.I.M. put a contract on his head, but I know what you mean. I'd like Strucker (WITH Satan Claw, of course), though I'd prefer some HYDRA agents, arms stretched diagonally upwards, bodies in the rough shape of an "X".

P.S. Nice to know you can still joke about your mental illness. I look forward to hearing from you later after visiting hour...

John said...

LAWay: "the collection is going to end. TOMORROW! Unless CMFC can save it with 1 figurine. BUT, this figurine has to be a redo. What would be your redeeming redo to save the collection, or would you let it die?"

It was fun while it lasted. I'd just let it die. ;)

Or, I'd put a twist on your game, and make Ghost Rider, on his bike, but with blue flame to say its Danny Ketch. Or I'd go for Arachne, US Agent, Jim Hammond, Phyla-Vell (Captain Marvel, the more the marrier,) Jack 'O Lantern, Goliath, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop,) Black Widow (50's,) or Ant-Man (O'Grady) as all are variations on characters already done, but very much different characters.

Or I'd say... redo the choice of Thunderbird. :D

John said...

"Something that does perplex me is that if you are willing to buy more of 1 figurine that is exactly the same, like multiple man and these group characters, why are you not willing to buy redos? I definitely would only buy one of whatever came out, but let me take a guess at your question anyway.

It's mainly how it effects the release schedule. If they release 2 per month, then there's 24 characters per year (not including specials.) You'd like to see redos, 1 in every 4 or 6. This would be... 6 to 4 a year and leave us with 18 to 20 new characters. Still seems like a lot.

Imagine if they made multiple AIM, HYDRA and SHIELD agents in different poses. If Robert wants to buy 5 of the same figurine that comes out in ONE month, that's fine. But redos take up multiple months to release. Imagine that an AIM Technician came out in January, one in a new pose in March, one with a shield and gun in May, one holding some kind of trigger device in July, etc.

To me, having more than one Captain America is just like having more than one AIM Technician. I have one. Let's move on. (As in, I have a Captain America...)

Of course, this is a topic that we both firmly believe in and there's really no convincing the other. We're both set in our thinking at this point. I do want to point out though, that I see your argument and fully understand it as far as what it means to you and could mean to EM. I just don't personally agree with it, and continue to argue it because I don't want to see EM pursue it. It could help out sales having A-lister characters back in the line up, and get you more of the characters that matter to you. But to me, it greatly takes away from getting to the characters I more passionately care for that we wouldn't see in such fine production in any other series. You want to see Bucky-Cap, which I see as a temporary thing (like Iron Patriot.) I want Trauma and Sleepwalker, which I'm sure you see as not worth the lead.

John, I did not suggest redos of 1 in every 4 or 6 figures released. I said I'd like a limited number of variants (which is not a redo in my book, anyway). Avengers Beast. A couple of Iron Men (original and 1970s). Original Captain Britain. That foursome does not seem a lot to ask. Some of the choices we're getting to now are hardly fan favourites. I mean, we're getting Titania this week. Don't tell me that had you jumping out of your seat with excitement. A small group of variants would not be the end of the world.

Thor8 said...

GENERIC CHARACTERS: I'm in favor of generic characters being included in this collection, although I'm not quite sure "generic" would be the proper term to use, being as they would each represent their respective organizations and said organizations being the entity. Plus I'd also like to see aside from those already mentioned a Sons Of The Serpents fig.

A long while back I had suggested the possible inclusion of some of the most prominent alien races and sub species in the MU also being included towards the end of this collection or randomly within the various extensions. You could even make the figurine based on known character that would represent said race such as Captain Atlas as Kree rep. Molto as Lava Man rep. and so forth for The Badoon,The Shiar,The Skrulls(yea I know we have Super Skrull)etc.

I'm not totally in favor of re-do' but there are a very few characters I wouldn't mind seeing re done.Another thing about the re-do subject; I don't consider 2 different identities with 2 different uniforms a re-do even if the one inside the clothes is the same person.

mighty_marvel said...

i'm for variants/redos eventually if it helps he collecion go on for longer. as this can only help get more of the second/third string characters into the collection.

say for example if no variants are done and the collection ends at 200. this would only get another 20 unique characters into the collection. however with 4 or 5 variants/redos of the big characters per extension and the extra sales means the collection goes onto 240. this gets an extra 45 unique figures in the collection.

so i'm for redos/variants as long as it is helping the collection go on for longer as it means we will get more characters in the long run. and i imagine everyone has at least one or two characters they would like to see done differently

John said...

Robert, I was actually talking to LAWay about the redos. But on the subject, what you're asking for is not a lot. 2 Iron Men, Beast and Captain Britain. That's only 4. But I'm fine with Captain Britain and already have 2 Iron Men. I'd like to see the original and current Brother Voodoo, original and current (well, the '96 version) of Kangaroo, a different Warlock costume, etc. Others want Archangel, other costumes for Mystique, Cyclops, Storm, etc. etc. etc.

While each of us may only want a few changes, we all have different tastes. If we limit these redos to ONLY the A-listers, who's to say who these A-listers actually are? I think it just opens this huge floodgate.

I mean, I could really care less about Storm. Seriously, I DON'T like the character. But she's a name that comes up a lot for redos, and I don't want 2 Storms on my shelf. And if its a case of "don't like it, don't buy it" well, I wish someone would have told me that before Jubilee and Blink. I want a FULL collection, and I don't want unnecessary figurines in it.

However, as Mighty_Marvel is saying... if it would help get multiple more extensions and more unique characters, then fine, I'd support it, depending on how it was done.

Its just... like most of you, I have a wants list well over 100. Titania? Nomad? Fine. they have their history, but few people care. (Sculpts look great though.) But we're still missing SO many key members to Marvel;
Dum Dum Dugan
Baron Von Strucker
High Evolutionary
Sebastian Shaw

And characters that people are VERY passionate about inclusion;
Sauron
Stepford Cuckoos
Moonstone

And even 25% of each extension toward redos pushes these characters even further from reach.

I want to see Swarm, Sleepwalker, M-11, Paladin, Constictor... and I'm rambling and ranting... I'll stop.

Robert said...

Sorry, John, if I misunderstood you and came in a bit clumsily. You raised a lot of good points and, as you said earlier, eventually it all falls down to opinion. I really like the idea of Dum Dum (and the Contessa, Sitwell, Quartermain and the Gaffer), Strucker and the High Evolutionary (I was calling for him very recently) being included one day. Imagine a shelf of SHIELD agents: how cool would that be?

After more Asgardians, of course...

Robert said...

"A different Warlock costume"?

Original or Infinity Gauntlet or Annihilation-era?

BobDiamond said...

Rob,
If a sculpt is actually different, even in a small way ('70s' Beast to 'Lion' Beast), from the original, then it must be a Redo, not a Variant.
A Variant, like the ones we got early on of Angel, Hulk (and The GREEN Quicksilver that the French got that we didn't for some unknown reason) etc, are just different paint jobs on the same mold.

Anyway, here's a Top 10 of Generic Characters, many of which would be excellent additions to the collection:

1. Hydra Agent
2. AIM Tech
3. Son of the Serpent
4. SHIELD Agent
5. Guardsman
6. Kree Soldier
7. Skrull Soldier
8. Sh'iar Soldier
9. Brood Warrior
10.Baddoon Warrior

Robert said...

Hmm.

I've been using "redo" to mean a resculpt of a character in the same costume and "variant" to mean a different incarnation or version of a character. Thanks to Bob, I see now that Eaglemoss use the term variant to mean a repaint. (Confusingly, the term variant can have both uses in terms of comic covers.)

I guess I will have to avoid using "variant" from now on...

hello chaps ;)

i was bored so i came up with a little game

the rules are simple;

you can choose any character not in the collection or announced to be in the collection but you have to remove one fig that we already have, you must choose the fig to remove because of the character and not because you dont like the sculpt, also they must be from different families you cant remove an X-MAN and replace him with another X-MAN. reasons for the removal must also be given.

i'll go first...

ADDED - Nova (Frankie Raye)

REMOVE - Jubilee...because she is possibly the most useless chracter in the X-Men LOL

Have fun and please take no prisoners.

Bloodstone in, Fing Fang Foom out.
Ridiculous left over from Marvels non superhero days , Who's next Fluffy the Unicorn?

LAWay said...

John - how dare you say you would let it die? lol :P

I understand what you mean, but what I mean is like what Mighty Marvel said, it extends the collection. Is the price of 5 redos as we are calling it worth it is it extends the collection to include 40 extra characters? Personally, I just want to see more of these great characters and costumes. I dont mind seeing these more obscure characters, but I really wish to see more of the characters that made marvel and continue to fly the marvel flag. Trickle these figurines to me and I will be happy. I dont mean stop the collection and redo everything, I just want to see more of these guys.

As for Rob, I dont see the difference between saying 'redo' and 'alternate'. Its the same to me. Like I said, there are characters that we ALL want to see done differently. And while I aint the biggest Storm fan either, I would love to see a white costume storm, its what I grew up with, and is a something I would prefer more than sleepwalker. That being said, give me a white storm, even though I dont care much, as well as sleepwalker, and I honestly wouldnt mind.

I could probably think of an 125 extension of just alternate versions of characters we have had. I dont just mean A listers either. Like Beetle, like Scarlet Spider, Havoc, etc. So many characters from A list to Z list have evolved or changed in some way. I dont want Spiderman in a different pose, I want that different costume.

Now, playing Pirate Adams game, you want me to be cruel?
Medua, Polaris, Crystal, Adam Warlock, Lilandra, Valkyrie, Impossible Man, Blink, Kazar & Zabu, Man Wolf, Ikaris, Destroyer, Machine Man, Shang Chi, Jocasta, Jack of Hearts, Gladiator (recent).

I would gladly trade all of these figurines for an arachne. Or forge. Or tarantula. I aint all about A list characters, but didnt care for those characters, yet alone their sculpts.

pirate adam said...

LAWay, that is kind of cheating LOL can you please just pick one character to remove...but thanks for playing

PA :)

LAWay said...

Ok, a straight swap without considering the sculpt...its a toughie as to which I feel is worst of the bunch...Blink. Blink for Arachne. I vaguely know Blink, but I dont even care enough to confirm my assumptions. If you muttered her name, I would not know who you were referring to initially, and that to me is not a character I want cast in lead, yet alone on my self, especially when Arachne hasn't even been made about 1 year on.

Is that brutally honest enough? Shall I do the others too? :P

John said...

PA's game;

My least favorite character is probably Blink. I'm generally annoyed at the high level of attention mutants get in general, and coupling with the fact that its an underdeveloped character that got in, I've got to go with Blink. Good sculpt though, of course.

Then hypocritically, I'm going to say The Uranian as the replacement. He's got the ties to history, the prominent place in the current Marvel landscape, but still isn't as developed as some other characters that could be named. He's still my #1 pick and the one I'm going for if there's another contest.

I'm actually very curious about this...
If there's another contest, like with Syrin(sp?) who is everybody going for?

Robert said...

PA, I'd probably drop Jubilee, as she's the most garish and awful looking character design (Which is some going with a comicbook figure collection!) That said, I don't really care about her. I was more annoyed with the Beast and Captain Britain, and would love them to be "redone" in Avengers and classic incarnation respectively. (I may have mentioned that before...)

I'd like a classic Iron Man (if allowed a "redo") or the Recorder, if a completely new character.

P.S. Can I ask you guys a favour? When you call me "Rob" I automatically think you are talking about someone else. No one here has ever shortened my name to Rob and I have to keep reminding myself it's me you're meaning. I know it seems trivial but if you could stick to "Robert" (or some sort of insult, if you feel the urge)...

THUNDERBOLTS- Atlas

SQUADRON SUPREME- Hyperion

ASGARDIANS- Odin

HERALDS- Firelord

ETERNALS- Ajak

HERALDS- Stardust (though I realize that won't happen for a long time...)

ETERNALS- Hyperion? Him and Starfox were the only names I recognized at all, though I don't particularly want either... but maybe Hyperion could help give way to Speed Demon ;)

SQUADRON SUPREME- Can I say Grandmaster? He kind of has ties in a roundabout way. If not, I'll just go with Hyperion again.

NEW MUTANTS- Warlock (Incredible look and I can add him to my Cosmic shelf.)

HORROR- Brother Voodoo (Good choice Bob.)

The hardest category was Thunderbolts. I also really wanted to add Fixer, Grizzly, and Ghost, not counting the ones that were members for a few hours.

Hi Robert,

Just thought I'd mention that I got my first delivery of the Simonson Thor volumns today.
Unfortunately it's Vol 2, and I have to wait until they get Vols 1 and 3 in stock!
I'm determined to hold off on my reading till I get Vol 1 ! (looks great from a casual flick through though...)

Cheers for now,

Bob, you are DEFINITELY right to be patient. It will be worth the wait (although hopefully they arrive soon). These comicbooks are the work of genius and they will make you feel you are a kid again.

Robert said...

Actually, if those of us who want to see more Asgardians sent those Thor volumes by Simonson to all the people who are uninterested or opposed to seeing more of Thor's cast, we'd find ourselves with a lot more support for Heimdall, Skurge, Malekith, etc.

Bob, you are about to read/ see the comicbook equivalent of the Great Wall of China or the Giza pyramids. You'll never forget reading them, and afterwards everything else in comics will seem a little less grand or impressive.

And, no, I'm not even close to using hyperbole.

Thor8 said...

Well it seems like no update till Friday,so here's a little game to add to Pirate;s and Bob's. Since many of us would like to see redos or variants which 5 (I was going to say 3,but I'll be generous) would you pick and why?

My fab five would be....

THOR: Not that I don't like the one I have but I"d love to have a battle armor Thor.

BEAST: I'd prefer to have him looking like his Avengers days.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: Should have a built at least the equal to Hawkeye's or Guardian's.

CRYSTAL: Anything would improve this one. (By far one of my least liked)

CAPTAIN BRITAIN: Just like Cap. America he should have been better built and I'd have preferred his original look.

Wow that was harder than I thought since there are a few others I'd have liked to pick. Oh just one rule you can't pick anyone who has not been produced yet.(I was going to pick Drax, but he's not available yet)

Thor8 said...

Robert and Bob: Could you guys PLEASE be kind enough not to keep mentioning the Simonson era Thor issues. I just recently started to reread my Thor collection again starting with Journey Into Mystery #83 and I'm barely into the 100's so it a long way to go before I reach my Simonson issues and you guys are tempting me to break my own rules and skip over to those gems.AAAAAARG!

Robert said...

I had a really hard time wading through the very early Thors when I first read them, Thor8. I thought them largely unreadable. Very, very dull. The phrase "for completists only" springs to mind as I was losing the will to live. Of all the classic characters, Thor's early adventures are easily the worst read.

Anywho, Thor8, as you are our resident expert, would you agree that the Simonson Thors are not only the high water mark for the Odinson, but also one of the best comicbook runs of all time?

mighty_marvel said...

SURELY ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO PICK ONLY 5 REDOS

ROGUE - 90s rogue. nuff said

JEAN GREY - would be nice to have jean rather than the phoenix

CAPTAIN BRITAIN - his original look is far better

HUMAN TORCH - don't especially like the flame effect and some sort of F4 costume should be visible so he looks more connected to the others

SABRETOOTH - needs to be bigger

jimbob said...

Sabertooth - Should be around Doc Samson size.

Cabel - No brainer needs to be bigger!6'8" boarder line special

Robert said...

CLASSIC CAPTAIN BRITAIN

That's a few people now who have mentioned they would have preferred a classic Captain Britain. So, a question for Rich: Did you give any real consideration to the original costume? Or was it seen as appealing only to the oldies around in the mid-1970s who read the original (and wonderful) British comics? Was it too short-lived a costume? Did it make too few appearances in US comicbooks, most readers there probably unaware he even had a different costume? (I believe it only made two appearances in Marvel Team-up, and apart from that it was not seen in any US comicbook.)

I wish I had a photo of me as a wee tyke with my mask, chest piece and wristlets... (Anyone else get them...?)

BobDiamond said...

Thor8's game- 5 redos/ variants:

BEAST.
Classic '70's Avengers-style'- simply because it's the iconic look, esp. when Perez or Byrne drew it.

HAVOK.
Neal Adams' design. Weird head-piece and sleek black costume-very unique look.

DESTROYER.
Should've just been the figure, not the dead soldier too- looks out of place with the collection and slightly bad taste (could have been rubble etc. instead)

ROGUE.
One of the worst poses. Big hair 90s version would have been big improvement.

MYSTIQUE.
Original costume needed as this gave her more status, esp as a leader of The BOEM.

Just realized that 4 out of 5 were mutants. Strange.

BD

PS. They should have done Crystal and Lock-Jaw as a double-pack in 'Kirby teleporting'-pose. This would have made her more interesting visually.

Robert,I'm flattered that you consider me an expert as far as my namesake is concerned, but I'm sure there are other bloggers here that have just as much knowledge of all things Asgardian as I have ,maybe even more so. Anywho yes I do agree that the Simonson era in Thor was one of this series greatest highlights and make for stupendous reading. I also enjoyed the Neal Adam's era as well,in my opinion his Thor along with Buceama are unequaled. Oh and about the early issues of Thor again you are absolutely right, well mostly right anyway. You ever read Hulk's original series? No wonder it only lasted 6 issues!

Thor8 said...

Mighty_Marvel: Yes I know it's almost impossible to pick just 5 redo/variants,but I asked for only 5 so you would all pick your most wanted(no easy task I know)and I'd see how many of you would also pick some of the others I felt (but did not list) deserved redoing.

John said...

5 Variants;
Mine are all existing characters (or close to,) but different people under the mask.

US Agent
Human Torch (Jim Hammond)
Phyla-Vell (Captain Marvel)
Ant-Man (O'Grady)
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop, just to get the Young Avengers going. I could care less about her.)

Robert said...

Have to agree that early Hulks are pretty dire, too, Thor8. When he uses his incredible muscle power to defy physics and change direction in mid-air, you know you are in trouble! Basically, they had no idea what they were doing with Hulk and the character was altered practically on a monthly basis. Wasn't the last issue (#6) of the original series the Metal Master Ditko issue with the three-toed Hulk...?

As for Adams, it was only two issues (and one cover). Makes Steranko's turn on Cap seem lengthy. I loved it as a kid and it's certainly excellent, but much prefer the Buscema-Sinnot period now. And even that is overshadowed by the stunning accomplishments of a certain Mr. Simonson... Lucky old Bob...

pirate adam said...

Hmmm 5 re-doo's

1 - Johhny Storm, in my opinion, the worst figure of the collection so far. the flame effect is terrible, can you imagine how good he would look with a better paint job and like the Cannonball sculpt with him taking off and a flame trail coming out of his feet.

2 - SabreTooth, should be bigger.

3 - Cable, should be bigger.

4 - Thor, i do like the fig but i would like to have him in his new get-up. i want Balder and Sif to be in there modern costumes and although i dont think Thor would look out of place next to them, it would be nice to have him in his modern look too.

5 - Drax, not got him yet but i want the big HULK-alike one.

i realy hope Rich starts to think about re-do's, with the newer figs, which are mostly C and D listers, lets be honest, they are having brillaint sculps and paint jobs and dynamic poses and getting larger all the time, they are starting to make our beloved Thor, Spidey, Cap, Shell Head and so on and so on start to look stale and out dated.

WOW quiet today!!

Robert said...

In an effort to amuse Adam and stop him from interfering with his parrot, I'll pose two questions.

1. Which hero in the collection do you think is badly/ most lacking in adversaries?

My answer: I know Iron Man is an Avenger and he has faced some enemies in both that title and his own (e.g., Radioactive Man), but he only has the Crimson Dynamo in terms of villains you would closely associate with him. No Titanium Man (a special, I'll admit), Controller, Firebrand, Melter, Unicorn, Blizzard, etc. Another possibility is of course the Punisher, although he does not have a notable rogues gallery although Jigsaw is a decent shout.

2. Prompted by Thor8's comment about rereading his Thor collection, what back issues/ TP/ etc. are you currently reading or planning to read soon?

My answer: Stern-Byrne Caps. Next up, Surfer vol.3.

P.S. Word verification is Maxim, an Infinity Gauntlet character!

BD'S 'KICK ONE OUT' GAME

I will bring him Sleepwalker.
Not this is a super-interesting, often overlooked character based on a fascinating concept and beautifully designed.

THOR'S GAME: 5 REDOS/VARIANTS

1. Black Bolt: one of my fave characters. I'd want him spreading his arms, legs wide apart, standing in an X-shaped pose. One of his most iconic and commanding poses, also revealing the white concertina wings between his arms and torso. A tribute to Kirby's design.

2. Crystal: currently one of the least superheroic poses. An effort should be made to create a sculpt which depicts her in the act of manipulating the elements.

3. Red Skull: his skull is too narrow, almost funny/cartoony.
I'd like a more imposing figure, a bigger cranium and a more chillingly menacing stare.

4. Kang: one of my fave villains. The sculpt is too puny. I'd like him bigger and in a more dynamic and threatening pose.

5. Storm: she deserved the star treatment. I'd like her in another costume and, most importantly, depicted in the pose of taking off, with one arm sretched up skywards, one leg bent at the knee and foot off the ground, with luscious wind-swept hair curls(I'll send her to the hairstyle department of the DC figurine collection and give her a Starfire or Poison Ivy treatment!)

Robert said...

RED SKULL REDO

The big problem with the Red Skull, apart from his weirdly elongated neck, was that he wasn't shown holding the Cosmic Cube. I have a statue from a while back that would have been perfect to copy. (I think it was called the Avengers Adversaries Collection, or somesuch. It had Cap, Shellhead, Thor, Loki, Vision, and I think Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch.)

Anonymous said...

ON THE TOPIC OF REDOS/VARIANTS

I feel that it will be a natural evolution for the CMFC to eventually embrace redos/variants, for business reasons as well as in the pursuit of the most complete study on the Marvel Universe ever.

A mitigated approach is currently used in the DC figurine collection. I mean, it includes kid Robin, Nightwings, etc.

I don't care if the man behind the mask is the same. Like all other collectors, I'm just totally ecstatic that I get my hands on those fab figurines. So the same can be applied to Bucky (even if we have Winter Soldier), Giant Man (even if we have Yellow Jacket) and so on.

COSTUME & DIFFERENT-ERA VARIANTS
are also totally ON. It's all a matter of presenting the product well. For example, I see no reason why a classic Captain Britain would not be commercially successful. Of course the CMFC's core mission should remain the eploration of the MU and therefore the coverage of never-before-seen characters, but it is totally feasible to include the variants every now and then or release them as specials.

Playing Thor8's game, what do we mean 'redo's? Is it characters that we are unhappy with and want changed, or are we just talking about having alternate versions of characters already in the collection? When I say redos, I generally mean the same thing.

But if we are talking about 5 characters we are disappointed in and would want redone...

1)Green Goblin - Give him a frickin glider.

2)Captain Britain - Make him look cool and buff. I would prefer the eXiles version where his costume looked quite practical and not spandex.

3)Winter Solider - I want a damn Captain Bucky! Such an awesome design.

4)She-Hulk - Looks way too scary and like a man. There have been statues where she looks stunning and not like some muscle freak.

5)Baron Zemo - Personally I loved the new Thunderbolts style black and purple zemo, or, alternatively, done him as citizen V.

Wow, incredibly hard there, but I was quite disappointed with those 5. There are many in the line up I am ok with, but would love to see alternates of.

GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK KIRLIANEYES!

...and glad you didn't take our leg-pulling too seriously!

One thing though, that 'one-in , one-out' game was started by Pirate Adam. Mine was the 'choose-a-member-from-a-list-of-teams' one.

Robert,
I hope your memory loss isn't caused by those rapidly advancing years that we share, and is instead a momentary blip....but I believe the Numero Uno Bad-Guy of Iron Man is The Mandarin- who, if you look closely at your shelf, you will discover that you already own!

Nick Fury on the other hand, is crying out for adversaries- Baron Strucker, Hydra, AIM, Hate-Monger...

Now, old back issues that need re-reading soon...
The Defenders around the issues 48-60 approx. would be good, esp the Scorpio story-line culminating with issue 50.
Excellent art, and some of the most original character-based stories produced in the 70s.

RED SKULL CRITIQUE CONTINUED

Now that I think about the Skull the adjective I would most closely associate with him is "evil". I seem to remember one of the stories where he returned had a cover with the words "The Return of Evil!". The expression on the figure we got looks deranged and insane more than evil, although I may be quibbling. The Skull is more a cunning strategist than an out-an-out loony. Someone like Carnage is a crazed madman.

I'd agree that Kang looks rather passive, but he did stand like that in the comics at times so it's not out of character. (That said, my figure leans forward at an angle that would make him topple if his feet weren't affixed to the base.)

And while the chances of an original Captain B seem remote, it would be a wonderful addition to this =cough!= BRITISH collection. Ahem.

COMING SOON: A NEW EM SERIES

...well, yes, it's all in my mind:
the ideal CMFC companion,
a new sister series called

THE MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES

This series would run in parallel to the CMFC and would be dedicated to important Marvel sagas and story arcs and Marvel Universe realms, planets, alien races, organisations, etc. in multi-pack/ boxset format (3-4 figurines).

It would be designed to provide us with all the fascinating and much wanted characters that cannot be in the CMFC for a reason or another. For example:

MARVEL UNIVERSE FILE, issue 1:
Age of Apocalypse, giving us the horsemen of apocalypse, and apocalyptic variants of the X-Men

MARVEL UNIVERSE FILE, issue 2:
Alien Races, giving us a Kree warrior in classic green costume, a Skrull warrior, a famous Kronan (eg. Korg)

MARVEL UNIVERSE FILE, issue 3:
Secret Teams & Organisations, covering SHIELD, Hydra, etc and giving us a representative for each of them.

And so on...

Each magazine summarises the key narrative events, outlines the impact on the MU continuity, analyses powers and costumes, etc. all wrapped up in Marvel Universe File format.

To create a synergy with the CMFC, the MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES series would avoid redoing unnecessary characters. The objective is to give fans as many characters as possible, so a PLANET HULK issue would not include Hulk again. It would give us Hiroim, Caiera and Miek for example.

Anonymous said...

THE MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES.
A new series.

... and a new blog soon, too.
I am in the process of creating a blog dedicated to promoting this idea. I will also campaign for it on the official CMFC forum. My blog will include visuals, narrative extracts, case studies, etc.

PLEASE CONTRIBUTE IDEAS for
the MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES.
I'd like to know which MU files you would like: alien races, specific sagas and story arcs, artist-specific case studies, and so on! Fire away!

PS. my word verification is holyf
... a perfect exclamation to start this holy campaign for a new Marvel Universe Files series from EM

Anonymous said...

MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES
and VARIANTS/ALTERNATES

The new MARVEL UNIVERSE FILES series would also be perfect where costume variants or era variants are desired. For example, an Infinity Gauntlet boxset could include a classic Warlock & Drax.
As this is a sister series, CMFC collectors would have the choice to ignore the boxset (in the unlikely event they are not interested in variants) or, more likely, grab it from the nearest Forbidden Planet shelf with the speed and voracity of a Galactus-like figurine devourer seeking utter and complete Marvel Universe satisfaction.

LAWay said...

@KIRLIANEYES

Tis what I have been saying all along man.

Although I dont like the idea of a planet ulk without a hulk. Sure, if the characters dont need to be made, dont make them for the sake of it. But different costumes for different storylines is a must.

Deadpool said...

OK CMCF blog rats.... here is a little something to ponder: -

What obvious upgrades should Classic Marvel characters have and why?

I'll start with Captain America.
Why after all these years as an Avenger hasn't Tony Stark produced variant armour for all the Avengers to enhance their abilities or durability.

Surely an "Iron Captain America" would make for a great upgrade.

What about an Iron Thor or an Iron Panther or Iron Hawkeye.

The avengers could then become the "Iron Avengers".

The same applies to forge for the mutants and Reed Richards for the FF.

Surely tech enhanced heroes are a natural "Next Step" on the evolutionary ladder.

Now then this leads us back quite nicely to my Marvel Amalgam game.

We've had Iron Modok, we've had Blackpool or Even Deadbolt and now we have the Iron Avengers - what would you guys do if you were in the hot seat over at Marvel?

What would you do if you were the Ultra Mossman?

PS I like kirly's idea about a parallel themed collection.

Deadpool said...

One last question - Why after decades of public service is Captain America still only a Captain?

Surely he should be worthy of a promotion.

Why not have Rear Admiral America or General America or Wing Commander America?

If he falls from grace then maybe he should be demoted to Private America ... or if he loses his marbles he could be Captain Wacky

You get the idea...

Deadpool said...

Richard's secret project.

Let's all have a guess what Richard is up to.

I have heard very strong rumours that Marvel and DC have agreed to allow the Amalgam Characters to be produced as a cross over collect.

I've also hear whispers about Judge Dredd.

What would your guess be?

Robert said...

THE "SECRET PROJECT"

With all the financial problems in the country over the last couple of years, and keeping in mind the emergency budget yesterday that put up VAT, etc., I wouldn't in the least be surprised if the secret project has been quietly shelved. Rich hasn't mentioned it for months now and that's not a hopeful sign.

(If I'm honest, while I'd love a 2000AD collection I already spend a silly amount of money on this hobby of mine. I don't need further expense.)

BobDiamond said...

Further characters who need an Adversary or two added....

Captain Britain-
Difficult one this, but THE FURY is just about his most famous bad-guy on both sides of the Atlantic, and would make a cool figure too.

Ghost Rider-
Don't know much about GR after the orig.Johnny Blaze series. THE ORB seems the closest to a recurring enemy- but he is a bit naff! Ideas anyone?

Shang-Chi-
Some excellent bad-guy designs, and one or two characters who have appeared in other series other than MOKF include- SHOCKWAVE and ZARAN THE WEAPONS-MASTER. These two would make excellent figurines. Pity we can't have Fu Manchu himself...

Dr. Strange-
Doc is a major player, but only really has Dormammu to represent his 'opposite numbers'. 2 worthy inclusions would be NIGHTMARE and BARON MORDO.

Sub-Mariner-
Tiger-Shark is coming, however Subby deserves at least one more bad-guy. ATTUMA or possibly WARLORD KRANG would be ideal.

Got to go to work...This is a good game Robert- makes you think...

LAWay said...

@Deadpool

I guess no one wants an iron man armour. A lot of the powerful characters like Thor dont need it. Also ego of characters not wanting to be an iron man clone. Tony and Reed are more likely to make iron avenger clones than give them suits.

You hear rumours, or ones you are starting? :P
I dont think there is a chance in hell for a judge dredd figurine. 2000ad isnt a strong enough property to warrant a collection.

The amalgam thing is interesting, but I dont think its huge news. Only hardcore comicfans really know of the amalgam characters so its a hard sell for newcomers. I can see them being made into specials of somesort, but i dont feel this news is big enough to warrant the top secret whispers.

I hope the idea hasnt been shelved due to the economic crisis and the VAT rise. The best time if any to increase the marvel price to £6.99 and give us alternate costumes and characters.

Could the top secret project be something like being given permission to make actual statues and busts rather than be limited by the small lead figurines?

A boardgame/roleplay/chess set?

It must be marvel related I reckon rather than my initial ideas of another series like street fighter or warhammer.

Hopefully we get news soon, even if its just actual hints.

Robert said...

I think it is probably time that Rich said something about the secret project, even if it is just a vague "watch this space" comment.

Bob, I'm embarrassed for both of us. Old Captain Britain enemies: What about Hurricane? Or even somelike Dr. Synne? Mastermind? The Highwayman (okay, he's a bit rubbish). We won't see any of these guys but Hurricane would be a decent figure.

As for other characters, Captain America could do with a few more adversaries. I'd like to see Crossbones.

BobDiamond said...

What an excellent afternoon!
Got back from work- saw the England game (Brilliant!) AND 2 figs from EM turn up unexpectedly- Titania and Gorgan.
I wasn't expecting them for a couple of weeks yet. I'm now ahead of the EM Home Page!
Excellent figs too, especially Gorgan.

Ok Robert...
Hurricane could just about qualify, but I was thinking of guys who have been seen State-side as well. The Fury has featured a couple of times in X-Men etc I believe- so he's a lot more known than some of CB's more 'parochial' villains.

BD

BobDiamond said...

Totally agree with you Robert,
Cap needs a few more villains...

I would like to see Crossbones, Arnim Zola and perhaps even Baron Blood. At least we're getting Batroc later on.
Didn't EM show an Arnim Zola fig, with the face of one of their staff on the chest-screen, a few months back? If they've made it, we might as well get the fig too, I would have thought...

Question....
Who are the Arch-Enemies of characters like Deadpool, Moon-Knight, Deathlok, Cloak & Dagger, IronFist, Luke Cage, Black Widow, She-Hulk, Ka-Zar....?
Do they have them, and if they do, are they worthy of inclusion?

BD

LAWay said...

@BobDiamond

If you are questioning 'if' a character has enemies or allies, not knowing who they are, then I dont think they deserve to be in the collection.

I mean, if you must struggle to think of characters to fill, they are not worth the lead.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Aw man baby i showe would love me some Luke Cage villains, like Mace, Chemistro, Cheshire Cat or Stiletto.
Yay! to the England footingball team

Robert said...

Rereading my comment to you about Captain Britain's villains from earlier, Bob, I'm not sure the mock alarm I was aiming for came across very well... But you're right: Captain B.'s early adventures only saw print in the US in the last few years and so few over there would have known about his rogue's gallery until then. (I think I read somewhere that Hurricane had made an appearance in another comicbook, though. Need to check that out.)

As for Leigh's idea that a hero needs a rogue's gallery to deserve inclusion, I don't think we should be making up reasons not to include interesting characters. I can't think of many adversaries of the likes of Iron Fist or Shang-Chi but they are very worthy inclusions in my book. There are loads of reasons why other characters have under-developed rogue's galleries. The Widow has often been in a team like the Champions or Avengers, so she tends to not have so many villains closely associated with her. Same with She-Hulk, who's spent a lot of time in the FF and Avengers. Some characters did not have their own solo title for long, so they have had less time to develop their own adversaries. DP is a newer character and probably needs more time to develop his own roster of bad guys. There's loads of other reasons why we might struggle to think of villains to go with heroes. (I am politely sidestepping plain, old-fashioned bad memory also playing a part!)

Keep an open mind, Leigh...

jimbob said...

It would be great if EM confirms Arnim Zola since they have a design fig ready and waiting!

LAWay said...

You havent understood what I meant Robert.

I am all for the inclusion of iron fist, she-hulk etc...they are pretty big name heroes.

I meant that if you cant think of the villains of that character, that those characters (ie the villains) dont deserve to be made. Iron fist is iconic. If one of his villains is 'The Red Ninja' that no one really knows or cares about as he only appeared in 5 issues but counts as an iron fist rogue...he shouldnt be made. 'The Red Ninja' that is.

Thats what I meant.
To reiterate. If you cannot think of the characters that are part of another character's world, the characters that you cannot think of do not deserve to be made.

It is different if you do know these characters, but if we are struggling to think of a decent...DECENT Iron Fist main villain, then he should not be in the collection.

Like I said countless times before, its the 'classic' collection, not the 'shoehorn every minor marvel character' collection.

Robert said...

Ah. Sorry, misunderstood. Looking again at the comment I mistook the second "they" to mean the hero rather than the enemy or ally: "If you are questioning 'if' a character has enemies or allies, not knowing who they are, then I dont think they deserve to be in the collection." But I see where you are coming from now.

Still, no one knows the entire MU and we shouldn't be dismissing anyone lightly. One man's Stepford Cuckoos is another man's Recorder. I had never heard of the Cuckoos and I bet Three-of-One (where has he gone?) had never heard of the Recorder. However, we are both passionate about our favourites and hope they will make an appearance one day. I bet everyone else on here can name another "obscure" character they love.

Also, how do you quantify the subjective term "decent"? I know what you are trying to say. Nevertheless, it's not a valid argument because now that we've got all the A-list villains like Doom and Thanos it's largely subjective who to include. The Puppet Master is a classic FF villain but he was not universally popular when he was announced. Others want to see modern X-foes and then there's others who live life happily ignorant of all things mutant. The collection is catering for a really diverse audience and we should be keeping that in mind. To many people, possibly the majority, the CMFC is trying to produce as many characters as possible. While that may seem like "shoehorning every minor Marvel character" to you, it is not the case to others.

Sorry if I seem to be giving you a hard time. It's not my intent. It's just that while I agree with a lot of what you say (especially on redos), at times you seem to have a narrow view of the collection and forget that personal taste and viewpoint can differ greatly from your own.

This question about 'worthy adversaries' and 'Rogue Galleries' is quite an interesting one.
For instance, why do some heroes attract the most iconic bad-guys-eg. Spiderman, Batman, while others who are basically just as famous, seem to struggle for just a handful- Superman, DareDevil, Wolverine?
I'm not saying that these guys have naff villains to fight- Bullseye is one of Marvels best, but for every DD big-league bad-guy, there are 5 Spidey ones. Just look at our shelves.
Who else apart from Sabretooth is a big-league Wolverine villain?
How many more times will they wheel out Lex Luthor in a Superman film because they don't believe the public has heard of any other Superman villains?

I'm sure there will be many contrary opinions, especially concerning differing definitions of what is an iconic villain- but that's why these blogs are fun!

You're right about Spidey, Bob. He has a seemingly endless list of memorable villains. Which may be a big reason he's the figurehead character for Marvel. It was once said of Cary Grant that he was a fine actor but that he was always destined to have a great career because he was lucky enough to work with great directors like Hitchcock and appeared in a long line of classic films like Arsenic and Old Lace, North by Northwest, etc. Spidey would always have been a big hit, yet you have to wonder if other heroes would have been more popular if they too had such an interesting and lengthy rogue's gallery.

Right then, Game Time! (prompted by Robert's 'worthy adversary' query)

For each of the following Heroes name the villain that YOU would consider is their Arch-Nemesis (or closest too).
The character could be either in the collection or not, at this point.

Hawkeye

Vision

Black Widow

Cyclops

Beast

Deadpool

Captain Britain

Hank Pym

Ghost Rider

Storm

Pym and Vision - both Ultron, of course!

Hawkeye - Swordsman! I know, I know! But they had such a rivalry going on. (And he's a distinct improvement over the likes of Trickshot!)

Ghost Rider. The only guy I can think of is the Enforcer. (Kirby cover. Can't remember anything else!)

No interest in the mutants...

Black Widow fought her ex-husband, the Red Guardian...

@Robert

I just dont think I express myself clearly when I say things like 'decent' and 'minor characters'. I understand there are a lot of personal loves for certain characters in the marvel universe for fans who follow certain titles very closely.

I do not mind this, and to be honest, I dont know many 'classic' type characters, but then when I see pictures of the outfits, I think 'cool, I wouldnt mind a figurine of that actually'. There are still many quite big-ish name characters left in the collection that havent been made.

I just mean, where do you draw the line. There are some characters in some titles that are like generic villains that may appear in a couple of issues simply to fill a story for a month. Like Spidey has great villains, but he has also had a handful of villains that havent made the mark, its just we dont remember them because in the greater scheme of the spidey history, they are lost in the greatness of the character.

The likes of Shang Chi and Deathlok, I dont know their allies and villains. A fan might, and they may have a rich cast of characters. But the heroes are not known for having lengthly comic runs, so whatever rogues they do have must not have made many appearances, and unless they have crossed over into other titles they will remain larger unknown to most marvel fans.

If Deathlok readers for example think that one of his villains deserves a figurine, but 90% of the rest of the collectors have never even heard of this character, should this figurine be made just to satisfy the 10%? Its cool for 10% of the audience, but not only could it leave 90% of fans disappointed, but in a business sense as well surely its a huge gamble to please this very diehard section of the fans and hope others will also buy.

Again, I dont know if I have explained myself properly here. I do understand there are certain fans for certain titles and characters, I just mean if there are a very small minority of people that recognize a character, then maybe that character isnt known enough to be cast in lead.

Bobdiamonds game:

I tried but I dont read enough of these characters as single titles to be familiar with their arch rivals. Most I know mainly from their teams, and while I know some rivalries for some of these characters, I am stepping away from this game.

Fair enough Robert!
Must admit, I put a few of those guys on the list without knowing what I'd put myself...

Agree with the Vision/ Hank Pym one- although EggHead could be considered for Hank as well.

Ghost rider- The Orb (!!)

Cap Britain- Slaymaster (just remembered him)

Beast- Dark Beast

Black Widow- Orig. Red Guardian (?)

Hawkeye- Crossfire ( definitely needs better ones)

...Can't think of anyone for Storm, Cyclops or Deadpool.

Deadpool adversaries - hhmmmm since everybody hates Deadpool then anyone would suffice including several bloggers here ;0)

But maybe the Administrator would make a cool figure.

I would like to see Echo though since babes are a bit under represented.

Ghost Rider deserves Vengeance to give the Moss Men a chance to redeem themselves for the lacklustre Ghost Rider.

Iron Deadpool would be a great upgrade and lets be honest there are loads of heroes that would benefit from a bit more ummmf and resilience.

I personally like the idea of an Iron Daredevil.

Regarding Captain Britain - I'd like to see a figurine of Albion.

I agree with an earlier poster that it's good to get back to the actual constructive comments about the collection. It does mean, however, that I do less skimming and more reading.
But please stop whinging for an update from EM. They're doing a great job, but they also have lives!

Somedays you just can't get rid of a bomb!

As I said before, I like this new direction the figures are going in - re more action poses - the collection is evolving nicely. If we get some re-dos at the end, that would be nice, as there will be more to catch up on - but not necessary.
Personally, I think the collection should end around the 250 mark. But I would still continue to buy them if it went on a while longer. I'm a little addicted.
And I would want some of the more important civvies in the collection. Gwen, MJ, Jarvis, Agatha Harkness.
AND - cue howls of protest and pull out the voodoo dolls - I wouldn't mind if more bases were done like the Abomination!

Sorry LAWay, I wasn't ignoring you there, it was just because I was spending so long contemplating my post, and then started Skyping to an old mate half way through... Meanwhile you and Robert did another 3 or so posts. So I was actually refering back to Rob's try at the game....as you can see, I can't finish it myself, and I came up with it!
Perhaps PA, Thor8, Ted, MM, DP, K-Eyes or someone could fill in the blanks?

"Somedays you just can't get rid of a bomb!"

lol what does this mean? I must google it, I have never heard this expression before.

lol Batman the movie. How naff was that!? Was it for comedy or suspense? lol Great clip. Imagine Adam West replaced with a modern Christian Bale batman, but everything else is the same. Haha!

I understand the EM guys have lives, but they should be using things like social networking and the blogs to promote the collection. It should be part of the job. It would take possibly 30 mins at the very most if they read comments, and maybe just 5-10 mins just to do an update. I imagine someone is on the computer all day, so is it really that much of an ask? I mean, I appreciate them for doing it, but in all honesty I think it really is something they should be doing anyway.
