The Snow's brought a visitor

Happy New Year everyone.

I hope you all had a good Christmas/New Year.

What with the break for the holidays and the frosty weather we’ve had in Britain, I’m snowed under with work (and you know… snow) so I’ll keep this update relatively short.

Just one figurine update for you but it’s quite an appropriate one – Snowbird.

Despite having a good number of appearances, the selection of Pose for this character was fairly difficult. Looking back through the comics Snowbird is most often seen flying or transforming into an animal so static standing poses are a little hard to come by. There have been a number of poses with Snowbird extending her arm but I deliberately chose not to go with these, as they would look very similar to Jean Grey’s figurine as well as a few others.

I hope you like the direction we’re going in with this figurine.

While we’re on the subject of poses I thought I’d just address a few comments about pose selections and some being repeated. We do try our best to have each figurine in a unique pose and one that is suited to the character. Obviously sometimes we don’t get this quite right. Some figurines seem to come a lot easier than others. Some characters just have workable natural poses, while others cause a lot of trouble. Although an image may look great on the comic page sometimes it just doesn’t work in 3D. Some reasons for this are that on a comic page an artist can cheat an image to make it look great – they can make the body slightly out of proportion, create slightly un-natural poses or just bleed off parts of the body that don’t quite work. Believe me, full turnarounds of comic characters are fairly rare and are never in great poses. Going from a flat image to a 3D model takes some real skill and it’s nearly impossible to match the image perfectly as it always ends up looking odd.

Another major problem with poses selected from comic pages is that the feet placement is often not shown and when it is the legs are frequently wide apart. Even a simple adjustment of narrowing the gap between the legs changes the entire pose as it moves the whole figure’s skeleton.

As some have mentioned, our collection doesn’t always have the dynamism that our sister publication (DC) does. One of the reasons for this is that when we started the Marvel Collection we were working from scratch, we didn’t know if standard poses or over the top dynamic poses were wanted. As the collection has grown we’ve tried to evolve and encompass more poses while not taking the collection too far from the original 20-30 figurines we made. On the other hand DC launched some time after Marvel and had a clean slate. Both Marvel and DC teams work closely and often duties/team members overlap so with the DC project we were able to learn from Marvel and move forward. We always consult each other on figurine development and I’d like to think both teams can learn from each other.

Now I’m not trying to defend all of the choices we’ve made but I am hoping to give you guys a little understanding of how and why we work the way we do.

I’m always happy to take suggestions for poses so if you find something you like feel free to point us in the right direction. Just remember, not everyone’s going to agree with you ;-)

Have a good weekend everyone.

come to think of it Rob i have never seen Hela's half decayed form, only read about it, forgive me for going all Slapstick for a moment but in the recent Thor vs Hulk cartoon Hela is a giant, towering over Thor and the Hulk, easily 10ft making her special status but i have seen her stated as everything from 6'7" upwards, so what are we supposed to believe? another question for Rich me thinks.

p.s i'll get the snacks, wait a minute, Robert, its not an Ann Summers party is it? :)

p.p.s Thor8 the warriors three look fantastic, good call

What happened to Robert? He dissapeared and I didn't even get to read his last two posts before they were deleted!

Pirate A:I'll try digging thru my Thor collection and find were the half decayed Hela apppears in. If my memory doesn't fail me her half decayed form shows whenever her head gear is removed. Marvel dreamed this up in order toachive a closer similarity with whats related in norse mythology concerning this character. If she's added to this collection(and I sure hope she is) I'd prefer the non-decayed version.

I gave up on re-dos a long time ago and started doing my own (Surfer Flying on board etc).

If there was only going to be one more special - Saquatch please.

Galactus Herald - got to be Terrax.

Thor8 buddy have a look on the forum - if you really want a Battle Armour thor you can have one of mine - just need a Doc Sampson and I will do you one for free!!

Thor8, I thought I was cluttering up here with my muterings, so I deleted them. We had gone onto a second page of posts and I thought it was a bit much.

Glad you were able to solve the problem of the decayed Hela, Thor8. I cannot recall her removing the helmet, so I'll be interested if you can tell me where it happened...

now you guys are talking , i for one have felt strongly about this topic for a long time now. why don't we get more specials in this collection ?
it's a way of getting more characters in !!
one per month is affordable and besides , subscribers get to opt out each time anyway.
and while we are on the subject of extra additions to this collection here are the topics mentioned so far over the months ......
more specials , mega specials.
more twin packs.
multi packs of 3 or more characters starting with warriors three.
multi packs to complete teams such as the rest of the wrecking crew.
issues containing figurines only using characters that have lack of art work or background info / enough to fill a magazine.
more variants for past present and future issues.
special/s similar to the dc's batman on bat bike - ghost rider on motorbike or dread knight on horseback for example.
i'm all for the above inclusions so even if we do not get them now then perhaps when we run out of standard issues they could be added ?
i wonder how many extentions we will get , the more the better !!
rich previously hinted at four more extentions so hopefully this will happen.
it would be great if we got even more too , or the above specials.
i know what some of you are thinking ..............
but i for one do not care if i am living in an old age pensioners home when i purchase the very last issue of this collection , i love it so much.

PAdam mate its not as hard as you think, but quite addictive. I do as a hbby thats why I offer to do for the cost of materials (ususlly just the figurine).

So mate I make the same offer to you - if you want one, I will do.

My only frustraition is that I have to do on my knee at present - the customs will improve when I can set up a dedicated work area.

Thanks for the comments and lets hope for an update today.

Let me clarify: I think Chris is a genius and his sculpts are awesome! Doctor Strange, Vision, Falcon, Sinister or the forthcoming Snowbird sculpts, to name a few, are masterpieces.

However, as with all forms of art, sculpt techniques and production technologies also continue to evolve organically. So the artist can now create figurines that match his vision as well as capturing the essence of the Marvel character in more faitful ways.

Personally, I would prefer to see new improved variants of important characters instead of figurines of ancillary villains.

I am not talking about new poses or costume variants. I would review those figurines where the visual elements of the character's costume and powers have not been used. For example, it is a pity that the Invisible Woman figurine is just a woman in a blue suite and does not come with tiny glass discs representing the force fields.

I would like to invite you, my fellow collectors, to submit a list of figurines where the character's power, best visual elements or gadgets could have been included...

I prefer normal standing poses that reflect the character. These are easier to line up together, and we get a good sense of scale between every character that you dont get as much in dynamic poses, crouches, etc.
