Good day to you all. Some recently designed covers...
Trapster Final inks...
Some recently painted sculpts...
We are changing Wiccan's cape to all one shade of red as this darker shade doesn't really work.
As Mojo has quite a lot of fine detail, we have taken the decision to pack him in polysterine for maximum protection. So as you won't be able to see the figurine through a window we have designed a groovy box to show him off. This is the design of the front and sides.
A little competition: I'm really stuck for Blog titles at the moment, so please post your title for next weeks update and I'll choose the best!
Jameson didn't take the news well.
PS Thanks for all the (kind) comments and suggestions. I'm not in marketing or finance but a lot of your suggestions make sense to me. Bye for now. Dan.

Ok Leigh, chill...

Sent email to the spiderman team. They'll get back to us, sort it out, and we can have awesome spider-man figurines for £2.99.

We are robbing them blind.

I would have been just as happy if that was in scale with the CMFC and it was just a new line by Dan and the crew.

I love you Toon for posting that! Where did you find it?

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Another Spider-Man figure?!?
YAWN. There you go, LAWay. More stuff for your Spider-Man museum. ;)
While it's a lovely product, I can't help but feel a bit worried that EM may be unlikely to give us more characters in the same scale as CMFC figurines.

LAWay said...

lol

Blake, its a mini statue. Not a little figurine! Its a whole new product.

You think it looks great. In scale with the Mega Specials, resin, at £2.99. And you still complain? Stubborn beyond belief.

God help marvel with fans like you who now refuse to buy anything other than the CMFC as long as its only a brand new character they have never seen before as a figurine.

Am I the only one excited about this? Imagine a decently done Captain America, Captain Britain, Cyclops, Rogue, Mystique!!! At this scale, with that detail, looking this lovely! I'm sorry, give me this over a £19 dog any day.

LAWay said...

I have read a few comments on the forum of people sort of protesting against ANY new marvel product by EM purely because if its not the CMFC then they want EM to go to hell basically.

These people embarrass me as a marvel fan, and disappoint me that we have been given 7 years and 200 figurines, and this is how people react.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Ridonculous! I'm not stubborn. I already have a Bowen Spider-Man figure, LAWay. At least try to get excited for some good reasons, and not just because it comes cheap.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

You've got your wires crossed, mate. Many people are way past feeling excited for the usual figure of an A-lister. You just fail to understand that many devoted Marvel fans, like myself, were excited to have a collection like the CMFC where interesting, less overused characters were finally getting the star treatment that they deserved. Many Marvel fans like me feel a higher degree of excitation if uncharted areas of the Marvel Universe are explored and given the attention they deserve. You are just at the opposite end of the Marvel fandom spectrum, and that's fine if it's what you like. But you need to understand and respect that at the other end of the spectrum there are collectors who pursue those less-known, yet super interesting characters rarely seen in figurine or statue format. We're no less Marvel fans than you are. And, it may be argued, our interest in the most remote areas of the MU may even make us better Marvel fans than the average A-lister lover.

LAWay said...

Not saying you are any less of a fan. People like you, and its obvious in your enthusiasm, are probably the super hardcore loving all aspects of marvel characters.

What I dont understand it loving something so much, and yet people are blatantly dismissing anything ... ANYTHING, that isnt the CMFC.

I wasnt excited at the price, the excitement was at the figurine. The price is a bonus. I would pay £20 for that spidey statue in an instant.

I intend on buying more of that series too. Essentially its the same as a Mega, and as long as they keep it to 1 a month should be fine. People are willing to pay 8.99 for the CMFC, works out £19 a month, so its no difference.

I'm exciting in the potential larger figurines have with the detail and quality of sculpt. Like Bowen statues, but affordable.

I just paid £20 in FP for 2 4" marvel action figures. (Thanos & Adam Warlock...they look fantastic!). A statue at the same price, I think its great.

And yet again, people in the U.S. can't freaking order it!!!!!

Way to go EM!

Dan. . . . .maybe you could talk them into letting Bloggers in the U.S. to being permitted to order them, ;P

Seriously, do they ever learn??????

mgf said...

That site is at best a work in progress, surely? EM sites are significantly more sophisticated. Besides which it all has to run past the good people of Arbroath yet.

Question: If the standard figures are £19, how much will a Hulk figure cost? How could you put out a Marvel collection without the Hulk? Is it worth waiting seven years for half scale figures, or fourteen years for life size?

Robert said...

R.I.P., Ernie Chan. You'll be missed.

TheTooN said...

Thanks for the reply and confirmation Dan.

One of the guys on the Forum discovered a leaflet in another publication (Peppa Pig would you believe) and I wanted to double check it wasnt some kind of scam/mirage :P

Ordered a copy to check out the quality, for the full cover price I'm hopeful it will be a fantastic product.

I happily pay that sort of money for Marvel Legends so the price wouldnt be much of an issue.

Display space is my only bugbear and these would have to steal it from Marvel Legends.

Apologies if sending a letter to Andrew caused you any discomfort.

LAWay said...

TheToon - you managed to order one? Once I hit 'place order' the page crashed!

NOOOoooooo! Have a feeling I'm gonna miss out on it. I thought maybe it isnt working yet until Sunday when it is advertised in the Mail newspaper.

mgf makes sense. Maybe they will avoid larger characters, maybe it wont matter, maybe they will increase the price. Didnt think of that though.

I think US have to get used to things that maybe they just dont have a license to supply to the US, just like many US products, or overseas products dont make it worldwide either. It is a mistake not to include the heart of Marvel in this, but maybe their hands are tide to legal or financial things.

haha Dan also did say he is ill so perhaps his comment was delirious mentioning my balanced opinions. ^_^

There isnt much to really talk about is there? We've all had views on the end of the collection news. What gets us really talking is usually seeing a new sculpt or line up of characters.

I think people who boycott the new Marvel collection may send out mixed signals. Perhaps EM could think that "CMFC declined, no one is interested in the new line...perhaps they dont like Marvel any more." And stop with the license.

I'd imagine Dan and the crew are working on something else.

Would anyone be interested in a collection where the figurines were half the size of the CMFC, but each issue was a two pack? The idea behind it could be to then stack characters that havent been done before in CMFC with a bigger named character to ensure they sell. Ideally then it would be the same price as the CMFC.

But I guess thats another collection to buy from the start again for some people, made awkward being a new scale. The perfect solution would be to just make another line in scale with the CMFC.

LAWay said...

Oh, anyone at Kapow comic con this weekend?

CGJ said...

Ordered my Spidey, at £20 each I am hoping they won't be landing every fortnight. In fact I have signed up without knowing anything about it other than the price.

I have to say that with EM experience of this collection and the detail in the recent resin sculpts (Swamp Thing), I expect this new collection to be a thing of beauty.

Whether EM delve into the realms of Blogs and Forums again, we will have to wait and see.

I would like to add if Dan is watching that, as a subscriber since day 1 of this collection, I hope EM are planning some notification in our next subscriber pack? Perhaps with the offer of a limited edition sculpt or variant for keeping them in Tea and Digestives over the years...

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

yes please! it's not rocket science. we are CMFC collectors, this collection is ending and we wanted more characters. the best thing for us would be a new collection in the same scale as the CMFC. i must also add that i love the magazines and the info and artwork that they provide. ultimately my hope is that we will see the CMFC relaunched as a new collection, but keeping the current formula in terms of scale and mags. not too much asking, now, is it?

Dear Dan,
with all due respect, you say that LAWay is a voice of reason and balanced opinion on this blog - and you officially hand him out an award. Really? So what about all the other bloggers and their vastly different opinions?

You make it sound like the rest are a bunch of unbalanced people with crazy ideas; a bunch of fools, even, for trying to save the CMFC and all that made it special. From what I've read, many bloggers describe it as a ‘dream come true’.

You never told this blog if you believed in the so-called
‘dream’. Maybe because you didn’t want to take sides. But no. Now you appear to have openly sided with LAWay and validated all that his opinions represent: that the CMFC needed to die, to be replaced by a rather unimaginative series of A-lister figures in a market already saturated with A-listers.

From what I've read, other bloggers have tried to suggest that EM could create Marvel history, more than just
churning out merchandise already vailable in other product lines. Is this such an unreasonable idea?

We certainly didn’t need LAWay to remind us that commercial logic will inevitably prevail and kill the dream. Is this where you stand too? Then it’s no wonder that the CMFC is ending.

Or maybe you can tell us what you would have liked, as a Marvel
fan yourself. It’d be nice to know what collection you would like to produce if it was 100% up to you.
Because recently we've only heard you say things like 'que sera sera' and it's still unclear how much you care.

I’ve been reading this blog for a while. Many of the regular bloggers have contributed their knowledge, passion and some extraordinary ideas. Real supporters of the CMFC. I'm sure they don’t expect or need your praise. But then you choose to praise the one blogger who, from what I've read over the months, has mostly expressed unhappiness with the CMFC and the direction it was taking, an inability to understand what makes it unique and a dismissive attitude towards those second-tier characters that make the MU so amazing.

And he's the voice of reason?
Quite frankly, Dan, I find it’s a tiny bit insulting to all the other bloggers, collectors and Marvel fans out there.

Reading the mystery comment again, i like the suggestion to ask Dan how he'd develop a Marvel collection (CMFC or new one) if it was entirely in his power. I think a few weeks ago he mentioned that he'd go for more dynamic poses and some redos. Well, then the end was announced shortly afterwards! Personally I'd still love to know Dan's vision for an ideal Marvel figurine collection if he had absolute control over it.

How would of the character order appeared? Who would have made the cut and who would have been dropped, if you were told it would only run to 200?

LAWay said...

Oh, and I gotta echo Blake's sentiments about the magazines. The magazines have so much information about the characters, the history, relationships, appearances, images, its a fantastic resource for Marvel fans and a great read, teaching so much to fans like me who dont know the history of some characters, more information than any marvel encyclopaedia has.

The guys at the CMFC office have saved future Marvel historians a lot of research and work.

tinodragon14 said...

So they dropped this collection to do a limited collection & these limited are different in size from the classic collection but starting with only popular characters meaning none of the villain characters I still hoped for in the classic collection will ever be done. Gee I feel so much better EM. Not.

LAWay said...

tino, the collection is called Marvel Heroes & Villains.

I expect to see villains.

It was never said CMFC was dropped for this. It cant be, since it is coming out while the CMFC is still being released.

EM is probably still working on more Marvel products. Perhaps the megas have sold so well, that they are pushing forward with the same scale of those with more popular characters.

Until the CMFC runs its course and finishes and we know the future of Marvel under EM, we cant really complain, its not like we wont have anything to buy for ages.

Great list. couldnt cram that many specials in a final extension though, what is it, only 4 or 5 a year?

As an exclamation point, I think JJJ as number 200 is a good end. Unless the collection can end on a stronger, more iconic character (not stan lee - isnt it abit creepy wanting a figurine of a real person?) then it just fizzles out.

Maybe that could be a game. Can you think of a more iconic character to end the CMFC on than JJJ (that isnt a real life person that would need all sorts of image likeliness rights & things to get over anyway)

Without a like a 1st appearance sort of redo, or a special that maybe featured 2 characters, I'm struggling.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

It's been proposed before. Some people think that Death would be the ideal last figurine. Personally I find it way too macabre, and it emphasizes the negative aspect of 'the end'. I think Eternity would be the perfect last figurine, as it would emphasize the eternal quality
of the Marvel Universe.

zombiedude13 said...

I don't see the point of larger figures, after all, I only have so much shelf space. My kids need somewhere to stand, it's bad enough I don't feed them so I can buy my comics and associated paraphenelia. I can't make them stand up all day.

It still makes more sense to me to restart the Classic marvel line, with some new poses/costumes, made out of resin, and at a higher cost. I will be able to fit 5 of them, where I would put 1 of the new figs.

Doesn't mean I don't want them, too, though. I can always stick the kids in the backyard until it gets cold.

LAWay said...

I plan on sticking some of the CMFC on the bases of those larger figurines anyway. Easy way to save space and everyone wins. ^_^

lol Death would be quite a grim character to end the collection on.

sed tallis said...

Ach, these teensy figs will have to go, to make room for the bigger lovlier figs from this new collection,I feel ready to move on and start seeing other figurines again. It's what the old cmfc would have wanted.

Robert said...

I haven't the heart to start again with a new collection.

Besides, who's got space? I bought the Jim Starlin hardback book today and I don't even know how I'm going to fit that into my already-packed shelves.

Mind you, on the plus side, any new blog or forum for the new collection will not have to listen to me going on about Drax-in-Jeans, classic Iron Man, the Infinity Watch, classic Captain Britain or how dumb Silver Sable is. To quote a certain deceased ex-Beatle, all things must pass.

If people havent got the space for a new collection, then they havent got the space for further extensions so dont need to complain any more. :P

I really think while this new collection was kept underwraps, that a similar CMFC scale collection is always in the works. They have received good feedback and know what it takes to make it an even bigger success a second time around.

The overseas market is vital though.

Laway : For some one that is called « the voice of reason », I cannot disagree more (respectfuly). Having space for a new eaglemoss extension and having space for another collection in a new format of an undefined number of figs is absolutely 2 different things!!
I bought around 100 figs of eaglemoss figs, and the idea to start all over again? In a new line and new scale? Well, I’m sorry if not being “Hyped” about the idea of a spider man figurine (the world already have hundreds of these) makes me an unreasonable or if I embarrass you as a marvel fan. But if the voice of reason tell me that “if I don’t have space for a new collection then I don’t have space for extension and I need to stop complaining altogether” well than I am happy to be on the unreasonable side.
I don’t say we should complain like 2Sweet or 2bbfe2b6-dbd1-11e0-8684-000bcdcb2996 or start accusing eaglemoss for dooming CMFC because they put this unknown character instead of blogers favorites either.
But I only started this collection last year and it is quiet difficult to be excited about this and I really can’t imagine what other who started in 2005 and collected all of them must feel with this brand new figurine of spiderman (and the Wolverine and Captain america etc.. that are about to come). A lot of people invested a lot of time/space and money into CMFC. The collection is not even finished yet that you asked us to be excited about this all new all better collection. it's difficult I think

Actually It is quite like any reboot on dc comics (new 52) or marvel (brand new day) the longer you’ve been in it the harder it is to accept to “start all over again”. Should DC fan be ashamed of people not interested in the new52?
To sum up, I am not interested in a reboot collection of marvel character, I already have 100 figs of the CMFC and I don’t want to start all over again if other people think like me, well it is our choice and marvel fan such as yourself shouldn’t be ashamed for that (in my opinion of course).

Anyway, I think it is a godd idea that the bloged will updated only if there is something new.

LAWay said...

Ah excellent points ReF. Totally agree, change is hard to accept in comic form and takes a long time to get over it and should be the same with the CMFC, I understand that.

I dont think the point about space is invalid though. It just sounds like another reason to moan 'oh i dont have space for a new collection...but give me 300 more figurines as this collection should go to 500 easily.' It just seems like another point to moan on to be negative about the decision. Its like saying they dont have room for any other marvel product. I can appreciate the CMFC has stuck a special chord and perhaps created collectors out of people who dont usually collect, but lets not complain about the lack of space we have, otherwise marvel may has well shut up shop, fans cant fit any more in their houses! lol

After 200 figurines, and probably way more action figures, I am hyped and excited at any new marvel product that looks as good as this new collection.

And if EM bring out a similar CMFC collection, I'll make room for that too. No way am I saying I am more a marvel fan, the passion people show in their posts and knowledge they show is evidence that there are bigger marvel fans here. I am just saying if Marvel ship out a good product, what is wrong with liking it?

I dont think people should be ashamed of themselves for not wanting to start collecting something new. Their negative attitude and hate posting for anything other than CMFC is disappointing. No one is thinking of the bigger picture, taking the facts into account or acknowledging the collection is on the slide. The collection can't go on forever.

As a 'voice of reason', I know of unreasonable thinking. I am a huge football fan, and just my team losing can put me in a sulk. After following the team all year with hopes and expectations raised, we lost the title on the last day of the season against our bitter rivals. It shouldnt bother me, its just a sport, but it did, and made me miserable for ages (it still hurts *sniff*.

But you get over it. You look on to the future. You get excited about things to come. Potential in the new. Maybe I got over the bad news quicker than most because I see the potential in new products, so maybe I am being insensitive to those who havent quite gotten over the news or havent accepted it yet, and I'm sorry.

But as long as EM keep making Marvel products with the team they have behind them, and fans keep buying them, then surely the future is bright for everyone.

Ah Nick Clegg wooing the electorate again,These new figs are 3 or 4 times the size of the dear old cmfc, so shelf space may well be an issue for some.I intend buying a busload of Spidey 2.99's to ship to the colonies at $50.00 a pop.So storage aint gonna be a problem fur yoors trooly.

LAWay said...

In height they are twice as big arent they? They are the size of Mega Specials I thought it said.

Not a huge difference. I put some of the regular figures on the base of some specials. Regardless of how much bigger they are, if people complain about shelf space then how much room do they have left for future CMFC figurines?

Luckily, just like being able to buy more figurines, people can buy more shelves, or heaven forbid, move things. lol

The Eaglemoos wants to launch a new collection with the main characters from Marvel to attract new collectors, because the characters are left to the CMFC are considered minor and no commercial appeal. Furthermore, wants to use to change the material for resin to make the price more affordable. I think the reasons are consistent, but there could be an intermediate solution that would please old and new collectors. Could launch a new collection (resin, lower price and the main characters) and launch a character of ancient CMFC (from # 201) per month in the old molds and a special per semester (lead, higher price and the secondary characters), which would maintain the old collection still active. Thus, Eaglemoss attract new collectors and keep the old ones.

Dan, think of it!

WHY MULTIPLES OF THE SAME.
I'd love to know why some people like to collect different figures of the same character? I don't mean to criticize. I'm genuinely interested - what is the motivation? Why would one collect so many Spider-man figures, for example???

MY COLLECTION OBJECTIVE.
For me, as a Marvel fan and as the encyclopaedic/cataloguing type of collector that I am, my aspiration has always been to create a Marvel museum spanning all MU areas and containing a figure of every single character. This is my primary objective.

HOW I SEE A MARVEL MUSEUM.
Using the analogy of the museum, I want to create a main hall that contains an overview of all the different Marvel characters. Then, as a second priority, I want to expand with rooms dedicated to specific characters and their variants. Say, a Spider-man room containing him in black-costume, classic and iron suit. But these character-dedicated expansions take second priority. My main goal is the main hall with all the characters.

BOWEN AS THE HIGHEST STANDARD.
My plans, as outlined above, do not include collecting different figures of the same character in the same costume. Variations in pose or execution do not usually interest me enough to want another figure of the same character. I look for the best possible figure of the character and, once I've got it, then I move on to the next character. I have to clarify that I buy Bowen figures! So, once I have a character, for me the Bowen figure is the best possible representation. I hardly feel I need another figure for that character. Which, I hope, explains why personally I am not too excited about a collection that covers the main Marvel characters that I already have in a superb format.

BEAUTY OF MU IN CMFC FORMAT
In addition to Bowen, I only ever collected the CMFC because its exquisite figurines allow me to create a miniature replica of the Marvel Universe. There is a special beauty in the small scale of the CMFC figurines. Seeing them all together gives me a massive thrill, even more than the Bowen statues do. In my pursuit of the ultimate Marvel Museum, the CMFC is my favorite format. So much so, I have now started to commission customizers to expand the CMFC with another 100 characters. And this is just the beginning!

A POKEMON ANALOGY.
So, to use a Pokemon analogy, my objective is to catch them all.
I don't want 10 Pikachus. Not yet. I want all the different Pokemons first. And when I've got them all, maybe I will start looking for more Pikachu figures. Maybe.

...HERE I CATCH A BREATH!
Quite a long post, soz!
To go back full circle:
so what motivates collectors who like different figures of one same character? Would love to learn their point of view.

mgf said...

I collect Superman statues and figures. I estimate I have perhaps 150 figures and twenty or so statues.

For me it is because he is the iconic hero, and where it all began. He has also had many looks down the years, changing emblems and so on.

What is weird is when you start half a dozen looks daft. Get up into the several dozen and they start to look very impressive.

Robert said...

I have a few Galactus figures and a legendary scale bust. Not that many, mind you, and certainly not them all. It's just such a great design. One has the Big G fighting Cap, Iron Man, Thor, etc. Another has him holding the Surfer in a ball of force (i.e., a ball of water). Yet another says, "I HUNGER!" when I press his chest button. The large head stares at me when I am working on the computer. They all have something different to offer. It's not really repetition to me.

Some characters are more popular because they are better characters than others. That's why there's loads of Spider-Man things and a dearth of, say, Silver Sable stuff. Why NOT follow the really good characters instead of the make-weights and duffers? In other words, to offer a competing analogy to you, Blake, it's like fans going to see a very good team every week. You are asking a question like why not go see other teams, even the really crap ones, so that you get a fuller picture of a league's players and teams? Nothing wrong with liking one team and nothing wrong with appreciating quality.

sed tallis said...

150....figurines/statues of a circus strongman.....in tights...impressive.
Tell me old friend are thee aquainted with a rather amusing magic lantern show called The 40yr old virgin? he had an a similarly impressive collection....(If you had 150 Wonder Woman statues that would be weird ) My daughter found a Lady googoo in her Moshi Monster bag, i honestly thought we were going to be mugged before we made it home, It was all very Children of the corn , all these feral kids suddenly appeared as news spread of her googooness.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Mmm... interesting points of view. It's funny because seeing more than 2 figures of the same characters would probably give me a headache!

LAWay said...

Blake, I think mgf and Robert summed it up. They are better characters with more history and are more iconic. I wouldnt think its a perplexing question. I grew up with spider-man, wanting to be spider-man, wanting to be a comicbook artist to draw spider-man, to work on anything related to marvel and spider-man. To me, spider-man is marvel, and along the way I have grown an affinity with most of the other Marvel A-listers because, whether its comics, games, movies, cartoons, these are the characters that are representing Marvel. These are the characters I grew up with that signify marvel. Maybe its a generation difference, but thats why I constantly buy stuff of the A-listers.

I mean, I enjoy buying all sorts of other marvel characters, and I do. But I dont limit myself.

Using your museum analogy, you wouldnt have more than 1 da vinci, rembrant, Monet because you already have 1. I appreciate what you are trying to say but I dont think you can argue against people collecting more than 1 version of a character. It goes against the idea of collecting, or liking characters.

You say once you have the best possible version of a character you dont need it. Bowen as the example. But then you break your rule especially for the CMFC conveniently to back up your point. But what happens in the future? Do you just throw out things so that you just have 1 of them every time?

Pokemon analogy, people apply that to just 1 character. Some people gotta catch all spider-man figurines etc.

So yeh, I just think that you collect more than 1 of a certain character because certain characters you take a shine to, you identity and empathize with. You grow up with them, they are your childhood heroes, your role models. You aspire to be like the characters, or take their values to heart. They remind you of good times, memories. You may just like the design, and that inspires you.

I think its hard to have that attachment with the whole Marvel universe of characters purely because they all dont feature heavily in people's lives, or in Marvel generally, thats why I probably struggle to see your point of view.

Surely you have a favourite Marvel character Blake?

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

I do have favorite characters, and I buy all the comics in which they appear.

If we talk about the philosophy of collecting, I agree that there are 2 main types:
1. the encyclopaedic catalogue type, where the aim is to include one example of each model. Say, a collection of minerals, one of each type.
2. the mono-thematic study, where the aim is to show as many examples as possible of one same model. Say, a collection of amethysts in as many shapes and colours as possible.

Your analogies with art don't work too well for me, though? Each work by Leonardo da Vinci is unique. I've travelled the world to see all his works. There is no repetition. As an encyclopaedic collector, I would want each one. Mona Lisa, the Virgin of the Rocks, the Dame with the Ermine and so on.

Maybe an analogy with theatre will work? Say, I'm happy to see multiple productions of Hamlet. And, by the way, I do go see them! Same character and story, yes, but obviously it's a different execution each time, depending on the different director, actors, stage props, etc. However, if I was collecting figurines of Shakespeare characters, I would only want one Hamlet, one Romeo, one Juliet and so on, and all I'd want is collect every single different character found in Shakespeare's works until I have a museum of Shakespeare characters.

Before I discovered the CMFC I had been collecting Bowen busts & a few statues. Naturally I was more interested in the villain busts which Bowen for a while did many but now he does few villain busts but they are now going for 120 dollars for the HYDRO-MAN or the ARNIM ZOLA busts. He did most of Spidey's foes which I collected DOC OCK, MYSTERIO, SANDMAN, ELECTRO, KRAVEN THE HUNTER, THE RHINO, THE LIZARD, THE VULTURE, THE SCORPION, THE SHOCKER, THE JACKAL, TARANTULA, THE GREEN GOBLIN, KINGPIN, HOBGOBLIN, MORBIUS, PROWLER but no MOLTEN MAN, HAMMERHEAD, CHAMELEON, MAN-WOLF, TOMBSTONE, JACK O'LANTERN, THE SCARECROW, PUMA or STEGRON THE DINOSAUR MAN. He did very few DD villains like BULLSEYE but no MR. FEAR, STILT-MAN, THE OWL, MAN-BULL or TYPHOID MARY. He did WHIRLWIND but no KLAW, THE MELTER or RADIOACTIVE MAN. He did the four pack WRECKING CREW which I have but no LIVING LASER, THE GRIM REAPER, THE COBRA, MR. HYDE, SWORDSMAN, THE EEL, THE VIPER, PRINCESS PYTHON, THE BAD GUY BLACK KNIGHT. He did DRAGONMAN but no DIABLO. He did GALACTUS, DR. DOOM, MAGNETO, ATTUMA, TIGERSHARK, JUGGERNAUT, THE ABOMINATION, THE ABSORBING MAN, THE LEADER (WITH HIS TALL HEAD), THANOS, TERRAX THE TAMER, FIRELORD, AIR-WALKER, THE SILVER SURFER, THE MANDARIN, ZEMO, THE MOLE MAN, LOKI, THE CRIMSON DYNAMO, IRON MONGER, TITANIUM MAN, THE ORIGINAL GLADIATOR, MEPHISTO, DORMAMMU, THE GREY GARGOYLE, THE SUPER ADAPTOID, PYSCHO-MAN, ARCADE, PYRO, THE BLOB, MYSTIQUE, THE TOAD, LADY DEATHSTRIKE, TASKMASTER, CONSTRICTOR, THE ENCHANTRESS & THE EXECUTIONER, BLASTAAR, ANNIHILUS, FIN FAN FOOM, BATROC THE LEAPER, BARON BLOOD, RINGMASTER, APOCALYPSE, MAN-APE, OMEGA RED, A SENTINEL, THE DESTROYER, A.I.M. & HYDRA SOLDIERS which I have all but Man-Ape, Omega Red & the Hydra soldiers. Sadly though no BEETLE, RED GHOST, MOLECULE MAN, THE MAD THINKER, THE PUPPET MASTER, THE WIZARD, TRAPSTER, NIGHTMARE, UNICORN, BLIZZARD, WHIPLASH, PORCUPINE, GRAVITON, SEBASTIAN SHAW, SPIRAL, THE LIVING MONOLITH. I had hoped to get a more complete collection with the CMFC but EM dashed those hopes. Had they continued for another 20 or 50 figures because of their size I could have displayed all the villains.

OBJECTION!
*queue phoenix wright music*

*realize I may only get this reference*

You state you enjoy plays, even the same play, because it is executed differently.

Each statue or figurine of Spider-man, or a collector who collects multiple versions of the same character, also do so, because each sculpt, pose, costume, is executed differently!

*wins*

I dont believe there are many collectors, who's sole purpose is to collect everything different. I dont believe there are marvel collectors who buy 1 thing of each character and is then done.

You have a favourite character, and yet you dont collect anything of them other than comics? I havent heard of that before, but to each their own.

LAWay, you are clearly an example of Marvel consumer, and I think you are a good buyer of toys and merchandise. Stick to that and your A-listers, because you don't seem to understand that the Marvel Universe can be studied and appreciated more deeply and in a different way. Now, I am not the Head of the Committee of Marvel Appreciation, but you must understand that some people aspire to study the MU just like some academics study Shakespeare deeply and comprehensively.

Now, I don't expect Eaglemoss to act like the British Institute of Marvel Studies either.

However, imagine if a British Institute had been given a grant to produce Shakespeare plays, and all they did was Hamlet over and over again. Real Shakespeare fans would soon shout: for Puck's sake, enough with Hamlet! Is that all you know about Shakespeare??? Give us all the other awesome plays and characters, for Puck's sake.*

*(yes, Puck. The character in Midsummer Night's Dream, for Puck's sake!)

Now LAWay, the truth is that we got no company with the balls to cover all of Shakespeare plays, and no company with the balls to cover all of the Marvel Universe. Just Hamlet, Hamlet and Hamlet again. The Hamlet fetish festival.
Glad at least you will enjoy it, LAWay.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Some people don't understand a Puck about Shakespeare. Some people don't understand a Puck about the Marvel Universe. If all they know is Hamlet and Spider-Man, sometimes I wish they'd just shut the Puck up.

LAWay said...

I think you are trying to seem too intelligent about all this.

Did you read any of my reasons for collecting those characters? Did any of those reasons mean anything to you? Or did you just read 'he likes spider-man...thats stupid.'

We had a company that gave us 200+ different characters! Havent the balls? They are not stupid enough to keep selling a product in decline! Collectors are leaving.

Could i stick with EM producing 200 Spider-Man figurines? No, thats a little too much even for me. Your analogies are useless and you conflict with things you are trying to get across, but when called on it you dont mention it again.

I can understand that people appreciate the Marvel Universe and its diverse characters, but to study them like academics? You are just sounding crazy man. Unless you want to be a Marvel historian, fine enough. I think those type of collectors buying the CMFC are limited, and even then, those historians would buy more than one type of merchandise of bloody spider-man.

Who is your favourite character Blake, if you had to name 1? How much merchandise do you have of that character? If its only 1, fair enough. Weird, but fair enough. Otherwise, cut the BS and condescending 'buying lots of things is stupid - i love marvel deeper than that, you just dont understand'.

It doesnt make any sense.

BLAKE and LAWay. what the hell dudes. u r turning thisblog into a battleground. you're frenemies like xavier and magneto. agree to disagree and get over it.

Let me play devil's advocate -

LAWay you talk bull. it's you who's the most condescending trying to suggest someone is weird if they don't buy figures. millions of readers love marvel comics but never buy figures. and when you dismiss the idea of studying the MU in an academic way, you just show that your admiration of the MU is really limited. I'm sorry to break it to you, but if someone has a superficial knowledge of a subject, on what planet do they get to feel like they're an authority in the field and they can lecture everyone else about it? You're not the one to tell anyone how they should collect or love Marvel.

BLAKE you're starting to lose the plot. you post so much info, it's difficult to get the points you want to make. I love your passion, but it's not like everybody needs to act like a Marvel historian like you seem to be inclined. I completely agree with you that the MU is a glorious work of imagination worthy of academic studies, but I'm not so sure that this blog or the CMFC is the right place for that. Having said that, I too would love a figurine collection that covers all the second-tier characters. You mentioned Pokemon. I know I can find figurines for all 500 characters in the same scale. Isn’t it a shame that no company has been able to achieve that with 500 Marvel characters? So I understand what you say. I hope there will be a company to achieve this one day. It’s a shame it can’t be EM with the CMFC but that’s a fact so you’d better get over it, dude, you’re getting too intense.

I’m not hiding my identity.

thanks max im pleased someone's trying to split them up... think its time to just forget, forgive & move on. i'd prefer the CMFC to continue because their size is obviously a space saver compared to these new figurines, i also like the fact they are all different ( i know theirs a few variants ) , i personally think it'l look sh*t having a 6 inch spidey standing near a 3 inch spidey.. so I'd have to create a new area to display these new 1's. who's to say this new collection wont reach 100, now try imagining another 100 "special sized " figurines & tell me space wont be a problem

@ BLAKE. just read one of your much earlier posts about privately commissioning a sculpter to finish teams etc. This is something i was thinking about also, wouldn't it be awesome if a few *chipped in together* ( *throw your dollars in a pot if your american* ) and got a good a professional sculpter to come up with some real stunners.

LAWay said...

moving on.

When mentioning Blake's idea to commission an artist to sculpt something, have you guys heard of the website 'kickstarter'?

Basically you have a proposal, and you set a goal you need to raise, and anonymous people donate money to get the project going. If you dont raise enough, the project ends, but if you do, you get all the money and are able to go ahead with it.

Blake seems organized and passionate about it. I think you just need research on how much a sculptor would charge, and then find someone would can make a cast of it. It will probably be expensive, and to sell the castings wont be cheap, but it is a plausible idea to get going if enough people are interested.

While reading Paulo's latest comment,I started to wonder: couldn't EM continue with their new project on this new collection they recently announced and add an extra extension of the cmfc, with resin, price increase, and make it a 12 figurine(1 a month) try out extension? If it works out and sales go up they could add another monthly extension and so forth. I know this is a dead issue, but I think it would be worth a try.

tinodragon14 said...

Hiring a sculptor to finish the collection is an interesting idea but I doubt EM or Marvel/Disney would allow it. Also the magazine is an important part of this collection & Dan has access to Marvel's vault so to speak to design the magazines.

I thought I would get over the ending of the collection by now but when I look at my display & realize that the spots for WHIRLWIND & THE MELTER will not be filled. The spot for BARON MORDO will not be filled. No SKURGE THE EXECUTIONER by THE ENCHANTRESS. No TITANIUM MAN by CRIMSON DYNAMO & RADIOACTIVE MAN. No COBRA & MR. HYDE. No STILT-MAN. No TOMBSTONE, JACKAL or MOLTEN MAN on the Spidey villains shelf. No ATTUMA with the soon to be TIGERSHARK figure next to Namor. No WARRIORS THREE with the Thor group. No MARRINA with ALPHA FLIGHT. No WRECKING CREW with the WRECKER. No MASTERMIND with the BROTHERHOOD. No LIVING LASER, BLIZZARD, GREY GARGOYLE, WHIPLASH, GRAVITON on the AVENGER villains shelf. No LOCKJAW with The Inhumans. No DIABLO, DRAGONMAN, RED GHOST, MOLECULE MAN, MAD THINKER with the FF villains. It just makes me more angry what could have been. Many of these characters would make great looking figures especially with how Dan & the group have been doing even better work on the figures then ever before.

@JinxDealer, I'm so glad you picked up on my project. I'm totally serious about it. You read my mind because that's exactly what I have in mind: put together a group of Marvel fans who want to get another 100 characters in CMFC scale/style. I hope you've had a chance to visit my Virtual CMFC Gallery. And LAWay, brill idea, and you too have read my mind. I had already planned to present the project on kickstarter, but I am still researching aspects which relate potentially to the need for a Marvel license. As an artist, you probably know that people are free to create objects of fan art inspired by famous characters, but this freedom is only possible at fan art level - not at business level, as any commercialisation would require licence. So, JinxDealer, the plan is to work with talented customisers (or become customisers ourselves!) producing everything strictly as a Fan Art project for Private use.

LAWay said...

haha i thought you would get a kick out of it Blakey. It was too sweet of an opening not to take. ^_^

LAWay said...

Yeh, legally I think it could be dangerous.

But you wouldnt be setting it up for profit yourself. It would be like commissioning an artist for a piece of work, thats basically what you are proposing. You commission an artist for a certain amount of figurines, and people who donate money are the ones who get the figurines.

I guess it gets shady if you have the sculpts and then start selling them in an online shop. I cant imagine acquiring a license from marvel and essentially stepping on their toes in the figurine department, and then you would have to register a business and sort out taxes etc

Need to keep it as simple as possible. Donations of say:
£6 - Reward, 1 figurine of your choice
£30 - Reward, 5 figurines of your choice
£60 - Reward, 10 Figurines of your choice
£120 - Reward, Full Extension

You want to avoid any opportunities where you are 'selling' the product. Essentially, people are paying upfront for figurines, but instead of 'purchasing' from you, they are all 'commissioning' work from an artist. Again, its not just a sculptor you need, you will need someone who knows how to cast figurines. Since it wont be on mass production, figurines will cost considerably more. And thats unpainted.

People had better get their paintbrushes out.

Its an endearing idea, but yeh, be careful with copyright and license stuff.

LAWay said...

hehe not sure we should be talking about that though on the CMFC blog. Maybe you should set up your own blog page outlining the project and gear up towards launching on kickstarter as the CMFC comes nearer its end.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

@Max. Points taken. I am passionate about the MU, and get carried away.

I totally admire Eaglemoss and what they achieved with the CMFC. The beauty of the figurines, all in the same scale and on classy bases, the balanced character choices across MU areas, the beautiful mags with all the info and iconography. 200 figurines is phenomenal.

The CMFC is the closest thing to the Marvel Museum that I've always wanted to see/have. It is/was such a perfect encyclopaedic formula, imo, that it pains that it cannot continue.

I wish EM all the success in the world, and I never meant to suggest that they should commit commercial suicide with a CMFC that generates no profit. After all, they really are NOT receiving a government grant to act as the British Institute of Marvel Studies!

But I have been hugely frustrated because:

a) I feel EM have underestimated the love for the CMFC. They could have at least tried to run a customer survey, no?. I think there was a good chance that collectors' responses would have given clear indications that the CMFC could continue with some adjustments. But EM must have felt it would be too complicated an exercise. I can't help but feel that it would have been great to see them try. My frustration with this is that, without a survey, we will never know for sure if EM's projections - leading to the decision to cancel - were correct or wide off the mark.

b) CHART HITS LOGIC.
it's soul-crashing to see that in this current economy there is no way for companies to give financial support to projects purely on artistic merit and for artistic aspirations. Just look at the music industry, for example. Record companies have got no money to support great experimental bands anymore. They're forced to focus on chart hits. They are forced to pursue sheer commercial success, not artistic achievement. I don't base these comments on EM. And I don't blame EM or any other company for using a Chart Hits logic. They've got no choice in this economy. And this is what I lament. The fact that even if a company has inspired leaders who genuinely aspire to create art, the current business models will not allow. That's what I think is happening here. The CMFC and its inspired editors and curators, like Dan and Richard. I'm sure their aspirations and best intentions were genuinely to celebrate the Marvel Universe by creating the best and vastest figurine collection ever. I'm sure. That's why the demise of the CMFC feels so soul crashing to me.

Museum Style.
So far, due to moving a couple of years ago to a bigger place and now getting this place in order, I've never had any of my CMFC on or DC figures on show yet. My Bowen collection sits waiting in boxes as does my various bust collections. Hopefully, by years end there will be a display up and running.
I'm under no illusion that I'd ever be able to exhibit them all at once so my plan would be theme my displays, changing them every couple of months to keep it all fresh and there to be something new for visitors to look at.
I collect multiple statues/busts of various characters. My Goddess collection of Wonder Woman is coming on a treat, with figures representing her changing look over the years. Couple with a few other characters from her comics and it will look just fine. I'm looking at doing some backdrops - such as rooftops to give my displays more dynamism and depth.

From a marketing standpoint this is horrible. Imagine all the potential clients they are missing out on. I personally have about 100 figurines and would jump at the opportunity to order from the Eaglemoss website but they will not ship. I'm stuck sourcing from retailers and EBay.
