Avalanche

Just time for a quick update this week, I have a new painted Odin for you and an early stage of the Avalanche sculpt.

Have a great weekend everyone, and if you're heading to Kapow Comic Con, drop by the Comic Book Alliance booth as former CMFC editor Alan Cowsill should be making an appearance. Alan is currently editing a charity book to raise funds for disaster victims across the world.

Odin is perfect, Don't know much of Alvinlance but the pose and sculpt look very dynamic.

Robert said...

It's an improvement but still not sure about the colouring of Odin.

Avalanche looks quite mean. Excellent facial expression.

Thanks for another update, Rich.

Odin is (for me) the best special of the collection , great thanks atthe sculptor .Avalanche have a very good pose .

I think Odin looks better- slightly less bright colours than before. I agree with some of the other posts however, the raven looks a little too prominent and a bit odd.

Avalanche looks very good so far.

I also got 2 subby-packs today- DC and Marvel. Now, I've been looking forward to Orion for some time, but unfortunately he seems to have been put together a little sloppily- his hands don't align correctly with his flight-device- so a bit disappointed there.
Marvel's Prowler figure also suffers from 'disjointed assembly syndrome'. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. I've always been very pleased with Eagemoss's professionalism, so I hope standards aren't slipping!
Quasar had 2 fingers joined with a line of excessive paint that had to be carefully filed away...but Mr. Terrific was terrific! The best of the bunch- well painted and a dynamic, worthy pose.
Final score- 1 nil to DC!

A comment from Walt Simonson via John Byrne:

I asked Walt Simonson about the scaling on Odin, and he agreed the figure is WAY too large.

Robert said...

Just hopped over to Byrne Robotics to read Ryan's post and other posts re: Odin's size.

There is no explanation for the overly large Odin. When he stands next to other characters Odin is not a foot taller, his throne has been sat in by others and it's looked the right size, Loki has even worn the Odin Ring and it fitted! Odin even induced amnesia and went out as a regular Joe named Orrin and no one thought he was freakishly large (1970s). I'd love to hear Eaglemoss' explanation for this.

I remember those stories when he was on earth impersonating granpaw Walton. Maybe when you put yer finger in Odins ring it makes you bigger?

deamon said...

Avalanche looks like I wanted him and he has ,,A", and that's good.
Can we see painted Toad or sculpt of Magik next time?
Odin is too big, but colors are much better right now.

Jacadoo said...

Have to say the paint job on Odin looks top - but also have to reflect the out of scale sentiments of a number of the collectors.

Avalanche looks like an excellent pose.

SinisterVenom said...

As much as I love Odin...why is he so big?? It's just not right. Please EM, adjust his size before you release him, just a little bit smaller please.
Avalanche looks great already! I can't wait to put him with the Brotherhood, that team is shaping up quite nicely :)
Bought Prowler yesterday, great fig! My only complaint however is when you look at him from the front, he's not even facing you! The sculpt is nice and all but I just feel the angle could have been better.
Finally I'm backing tomaszkasjaniuk in a call to see Toad painted next please. Can we also see an early sculpt of JJJ soon too please?

It was a classic episode Robert, When they saw "granpaw" tearing up giant redwoods by hand and carrying them back to the sawmill, they just assumed that ol gramps had been at the Baldwin sisters "recipe" .

IF YOU HAVE A SECOND, PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT MY CMFC GALLERY:

Avalanche is shaping up as a great villain sculpt. I look forward to a preview of the paint job.

Odin is awesome. I love everything about it - the pose, the colour scheme, the details - except for the size. I agree with the majority of collectors that his size is wrong.

It's a pity. For me, all the positive things about the Odin sculpt are spoilt by the out-of-scale size, which was totally unnecessary.

John said...

I'm assuming Odin can change his size somewhat (I don't follow Thor) so the size doesn't bother me TOO much. The main thing will be cost. I hope he's just the price of a regular Special.

But still, for two characters I don't really know, they look fantastic and I'm definitely getting both. :)

Mastermind is the last BIG omission from the Brotherhood, correct?

Rich, we need more villains!

The Crow and all black!!!

Robert said...

Didn't notice the crow's bill and feet! (So busy fretting about Odin's sudden growth spurt.) Se7en, you have, um, eagle eyes.

I had a look at a website that placed both the earlier and new painted version of Odin alongside each other and, while it may just be the lighting being different in each photograph, the cape looks like it might be slightly darker, too. Also, the fact the arms are sectioned into strips is not as noticeable now that the arms are a darker blue.

Actually, this is just getting silly now. Next thing you know I'll be checking out the feet on all the figurines in FP tomorrow. Night, folks, I'm off to read some old Avengers comicbooks till the wife gets in.

Although in the Odin image on which the sculpt is based the raven has been weirdly portrayed with orange beak and leg warmers. Gregory wright on colours.

Hey guys, i am in london attending the kapow comic con! Saw Mark Millar in the lobby of my hotel! How cool is that!?

They will be showing previews of the thor, green lantern and maybe even the new xmen movies. :D

Anyway...Odin's colours and improvement, but i still dont like it. I would prefer an unpainted figurine, as somehow you made the gorgeous sculpt looks bad.

Avalanche looks dreadful. Like the upper body and lower body were designed by two different people. Thats what you get when you go for poses, they dont always work.

So, thats my negative post for the weekend...off to comic con for geekiness!

LAWay said...

Just saw painted Balder...is that fake? What a turd that is. Once again a paintjob ruining a figurine.

And whats the point? You do classic Thor, modern Balder, some random age Odin...the asgardians are not even going to look like from the same comic! This is what happens when forums vote in polls...

Anyone picked up a batmobile magazine yet? Havent seen one anywhere.

Loving the Avalanche sculpt so far. Great pose and mean facial expression.

Odin looks good too. Not fussed about any size issues, he will make a fine addition to my display.

Foot stuff, again.
Haha, Robert. I haven't missed your dig at me in your post. Very funny.

I'll have you know, I don't check the piantjob on the feet of CMFC figurines as a hobby. I check them so I can choose the figurine that doesn't look like it's been painted by a monkey on a space hopper.

Kudos to you, though, if you're happy to buy figurines that basically look like they forgot
to put their shoes on.

PS. I'm no foot fetishist!! I just like my CMFC figurines to have neatly painted feet.

deamon said...

As I read all comments here, LAWay you're disappointed of 90% of figurines in CMFC. Is it trolling? Go buy Bowen, pay 60 not 6 pounds and you will have better figurine. Please stop this wailing, because this is annoying.

Robert said...

Blake, it was more a general comment rather than about you specificially. We are all guilty of taking this too seriously at times. I am just as guilty as anyone and was pointing that out just prior to the foot comment. It was more directed at myself than you, although I can see how it looks like a dig at you as the extreme I mentioned was from you. You are actually right about the feet often being sloppily done. I usually only do a quick check of the faces and as a result have bought a few with terribly painted feet. It would have been much better if I had checked the feet. (Oh, great. So now there's two of us who sound like some sort of foot fetishist!)

Don't tell the wife. She already thinks we all have enough issues as it is.

Thou shall adore EM
Let's show some love, people! There is no doubt that the Odin special is beautiful and represents a peak of exquisite figurine production from EM.

The controversy over the perceived out-of-scale size is a bit over the top, as are the comments about the colours. C'mon! It's one of the best specials we've ever had, and has set a new high standard that we can look forward to seeing applied to other figurines.

Odin is a type of character where artistic interpretation is key to creating a sculpt. EM have shown a supreme aesthetic sense, bringing the character out of the comic book page to create a stunning 3D version for CMFC collectors. I applaude and celebrate EM's work.

Ken said...

Ditto with the Odin scaling....he just seems a bit too large compared to Thor. Seems out of place :-/ otherwise he is perfect.

you've got a purty mouth.
Odin is freakin amazing, we do tend to nit pick, until we sound like ungrateful whingers......not me.......but some do ......... I picked a horsey for the GN the jockey is wearing Cap America's vest, £2.50 each way come on Quinz ya beauty!!!

Robert said...

Yes, Odin looks great. The Kirbyesque 'kilt', the Simonsonesque boots and gauntlets, the crow, the sceptre, the excellent bearded face - they're all worth commending. I'm very happy Odin was made, much happier than I've been over most specials or megas.

The bald facts, however, are unavoidable. There are faults with the figure.

1. He is much too tall. It's just plain nonsense to say it is "perceived out of scale". That sounds like it's a subjective thing. Look at the comicbooks. All evidence is that Odin is around the same height as Thor. HE IS TOO BIG. It's just not open to debate. Even Walt Simonson, via John Byrne, has said it's "way too big"!

Crows are black with greyish bills and feet. Fact. Again, you might be able to wriggle out of this if Huginn and Muninn were differently coloured in the comicbooks but they're coloured like normal crows. Again, no room for subjectivity.

Constructive criticism is not the same as complaining. The crow colouring can easily be fixed; if it's not done by Eaglemoss, we can do it outselves with a steady hand, a brush and a blob of grey paint. I'm not sure anything can be done with Odin's size, but best to flag it up now whe n something might stil be done about it.

Jacadoo said...

PAdam - now you have to paint BOR, cant have Grandaddy standing next to his kin naked!!

mgf said...

Robert said: "Constructive criticism is not the same as complaining."

All comments which do not laud EM to the heaven's are considered negative, Robert. The forum thrives on this belief, as do all totalitarian constructs.

I'm afraid there are some here and there whose heads are so firmly inserted in EMs fundament they can almost see the soles of Grim's feet.

I like the Odin sculpt, including the puffin on his shoulder. He looks that much larger because he has an arm raised, but head to toe he isn't that huge. It's a lovely sculpt.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Enough with birdwatching!
C'mon, this a Marvel collection, not a collection of bird figures.
What's all the fuss about the bird on Odin's shoulder? I'm not an expert in other-dimensional ornithology, and it may well be that Asgardian crows are different from the crows of planet Earth, but the fact remains that if you look at the artwork that's been referenced by EM for this sculpt, (in Rich's previous post) you will see that the bird has an orange bill and yellowish feet.

Anonymous said...

'Crow repaint' campaign
I'm no Asgard expert either. I've quikly checked other Odin sculpts via Google Images (try for example "Odin statue May 08")
and I agree: the crow looks much more imposing with black bill and feet. So, yes, a wholly black crow gives Odin scultp more gravitas - and it's probably more accurate regardless of the Odin artwork referenced by EM. Let's campaign to get the crow repainted black. EM are still fine-tuning the paint work, so let's hope they will redo the crow.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Mighty Marvel you are one jammy blogger ;)

Robert said...

Okay, it's sometimes wrong about issue numbers and such, but Marvel Wiki says Odin is 6 foot 9, with Thor three inches shorter. Even if we assume that the 6' 9" measurement is correct (and I'd argue the point), we're talking about a tiny difference when translated into figures that small. There is NOT a tiny difference between the Odin and Thor sculpts. Sorry to sound like a stuck record but it's one of the figurines I'm really looking forward to and want it right. (Especially after the disappointment of Balder.) Where's Thor8? He's been reading these comicbooks longer than anyone and is our resident expert on this.

While I am on, I'd like to amend my earlier post and correct the crow bill and feet colouring to black and not grey.

P.S. Read your post with interest, MGF. We all love the collection (with the exception, perhaps, of Leigh ;) ) and I agree there should be no issue in saying where things can be improved. As long as you mix positive statements with the constructive criticism, no one should complain.

Robert said...

P.S. Jacadoo, Bor is not naked. He was the victim of a prank by Loki and is covered in flour. He is actualy yelling, "LOOOOOWWWW-KAAAYYYYYYEEEE!"

The Grim Reaper said...

Once more MGF you try to bait me and the other forum members. You are well versed in the difference between complaining and constructive criticism; the latter is what most people on here do, the former what you do almost in every post.

You attempt to make personal attacks at every opportunity. Grow up , get a life and don't say things on here that I know you wouldn't have the b*lls to say to my face.

I've not been a major contributor on here or on the SHFF for almost a year now due to commitments elsewhere and you are still carrying a torch for me ...how sweet.

Robert said...

Since you are on, Grim Reaper, where do you and the forum stand on Odin? Do you agree he's a lot larger than in the comicbooks? (This is not a sarcastic or confrontational query, by the way.)

The Grim Reaper said...

Hi Robert, i never take your posts as confrontational :-) personally I would say Odin was too large in comparison with the other figurines we have all collected but is it really worth getting suicidal over?In reality we are talking about fictional comic-book characters and scaling shouldn't really come in to it. If we were so set in our ways then we would not have Galactus would we.
Sometimes i think folk worry too much about trivia.

As for the Ravens, then that is a bit of a boo-boo but one that can easily be remedied.

just my thoughts. ;-)

Barnabas said...

Odin needs to look impressive. He is, after all, the top man. Once he strips off all that armour (to have a bath) he'll not be much bigger than a normal figure. I'd wager he has lifters in those boots to give him the height. In reality, he's probably 4 foot 6 inches.

Robert said...

Thanks for replying, Grim. (Actually you sound quite chipper and philosophical. Go figure.)

While I am hardly on speed dial to the Samaritans at Odin's sudden growth spurt, clearer I am further along the autistic spectrum than you! You mentioned Galactus and I have to admit I don't display him with the other figurines. He's on a mish-mash shelf of various Marvel items. I can't put him anywhere near the other figurines due to the scale being all wrong. If I could work out a way of displaying the Galactus Legendary Scale bust with the CMFC figurines I would.

Anyway, re-reading some of the Avengers comicbooks. Started at #255 and up to #328 and now thinking I'd really like to see Sersi as a figurine. Anyone agree?

Robert said...

Just realised from Grim's post that I have been calling Huginn and Muninn crows when they are of course ravens. And that I've passed on that error to others. Sorry, folks! Another senior moment!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I always refered to them as ravens Robert....because thats wot they are.
Has the wife removed yer shoelaces incase the scale issues with the Odin fig prove too much for you?.
I was looking online at the original splash page from Avengers #11? the Defenders/Avengers crossover, it features all the cast members, all of whom have been given the lead/resin treatment......except for two glaring omissions Swordsman and Mantis, they would be my most wanted assemblers right now.

BobDiamond said...

Good explanation Barnabas! :)

I have been thinking myself about this perceived problem myself, even though I was one of the guys who brought it up in the first place- and I think I have a solution of sorts...

Odin is an All- Father or Sky-father as they seem to refer to them recently, and in the recent 'Chaos King Event' all the Sky-father types were shown manifesting between Earth and their other-dimensional club-house. Now, while they're in this state they appear as giants, so I'm assuming that one of the powers a Sky-Father has is size-changing of a sort.
Also- and I may be wrong here, hasn't Odin 'sized-up' before when situations have called for it? I'm thinking of when he took on the Celestials, circa Thor 290- 300 as one occasion.

Anyway, that's my theory...I'm interested to hear what Thor8 and other Asgardophiles have to say...

Cheers,
BD (Heimdall)

Robert said...

Blake has also been referring to them as crows, Ted, hence the apology.

Yes, Bob, Odin is a god and can alter his size. But the vast majority of his appearances he has been a consistent height. Your examples are exceptions. I could list hundreds more appearances that have him about the same height as Thor.

Anyway, the wife has hidden all the ties and insists on accompanying me everywhere, even out to the garage, a place she never visits and apparently believes is magically tidied by elves during the dead of night.

Robert said...

Ted, you talking about the Sal Buscema splash when the Avengers and Defenders are in Strange's Greenwich Village home? Beautiful art. One of my favourite images ever. And part of a great, great story. I lent the story (in TP) to a friend's son three days ago. He's reading Batman at the moment and I want to rescue him before he goes over to the Dark Side.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Ha Robert, auld timer, your quite entitled to bang on aboot Odin .it is probably one of your most wanted figs so of course you want it to be as good as it can possibly be.
Some figs like Iron Man, Cable were clearly too small, I would rather have a fig too big than too weeney.....just right would be better i grant you ;)

Robert said...

Some of the variations in size are quite noticeable, Ted. When you place Iron Man next to Dr. Strange, it's like Teen Tony is wearing the armour!

As for fixating on someone, I've been pretty good of late. I mean, remember the long-running stink I raised over Drax? (What do you mean you're trying to forget?) I destroyed three stress toys over that one! "Indestructible!, it said on the box! Pfah!

Ha, yes. They are ravens, of course. Well, there's no doubt that the raven on Odin's shoulder should look a bit more menacing, so let's hope EM will paint it 100% black. Right now that bird is looking way too cute, and we don't wanna have a Disney-ised cutey version of Odin, do we?

I totally agree with Robert. One reason CMFC piqued my interest and held an allure was the fact that most, if not all the superheroes/villains are correctly scaled in comparison to each other. Odin is a bit too large. He needs to be cut down by a few millimeters! I really dislike characters that are out of proportion. It defeats the mission of CMFC! Thats my two cents for you :0)

pirate adam said...

i am absolutely made up with the Odin we're getting and heres why..............

us Asgardian fans have had to settle for second best before and now we are getting a great sculpt slightly out of scale admittedly but great non the less. did anyone here the X-Fans moan when they got that giant sculpt of Blob?...NO or when the huge Sasquatch was released did people moan?...NO, perhaps there not as much out of scale but they are still too large.

my main moaning point is the fact that Sauron has been given a Special slot and us Asgardians have been told that Hela wont be considered for a special, when she would likely use the same amount of lead/resin as the flying featherless turkey

so i say stop moaning that Odin is this or thats wrong or his shoe laces aren't tied and be thankful that for once us Asgardian fans aren't getting the shi**y end of the stick but rather a fantastic sculpt that is going to look amazing in the center of your Asgardian display

Rich, thank you for giving us Odin and please pass on my thanks to the sculptor and painter for there excellent work, the best Special by far...so far (even without the second Raven)

pirate adam said...

now give us a Giant re-do of Hulk so he doesn't look like such a wimp next to the other specials

PA

Robert said...

Well, I made it through the night without any visit to A&E.

With all due respect, Adam, it sounds like you think that any criticism of Odin's height will lead Rich to conclude that making specials for the Asgardian fans is more bother than it's worth and not do it again. That would mean no Destroyer, etc in future. If that's the case, I don't agree. Also, I - and others - are hardly the first folk on here to criticise: I remember reading criticisms about Blob's size and his moobs, for instance, and in the past the inconsistency of characters' heights has already been discussed.

No one can argue that Odin's not a lovely sculpt. The face in particular - often a problem with such tiny figures - is great. Nevertheless, he is much too big. If I have to get him at the wrong size, yep, I'll still eagerly snatch him up. I'm still excited to get him. However, I don't see any good reason why we can't encourage Eaglemoss to get his scale right.

Robert said...

And my family think I have problems...

Anonymous said...

The out-of-scale Lobo case.
Odin is unnecessarily big, and that's a fact. It'd be great if Rich could explain why.

A similar case happened to DC collectors when they got a Lobo special. It's so out-of-scale, Lobo is almost double the size of regular characters. His dog (yes, the sculpt includes his dog) is almost as big as Superman! I hated the Lobo special, as it means you can't have Lobo displayed with other DC characters.

I complained on the DC forum, and much to my surprise I found that the majority of collectors were happy. Because objectively it's a phenomenal Lobo sculpt. It's a shame that Odin, just like Lobo, will look like a standalone piece. Beautiful, yes. But it'll look like it's part of another collection, not part of the CMFC.

Anonymous said...

Positive/Negative thinking
I can't see any reason why Lobo was made into a £18 special. Similarly, I can't see any reason why Odin has to be so big. Positive thinking: EM felt that the character deserved an outstanding representation, and this would have not been possible in a small-scale figure. Personally I would have preferred an in-scale Odin, but EM may have genuinely felt that large scale would result in a better sculpt.
Negative thinking: EM knew that the character was much wanted and it would sell well, so they decided to go for the largest (and most expensive) size possible, for maximum financial gain, knowing that fans would rather accept the out-of-scale imposition than miss out on a loved character like Lobo or Odin.

Maximum fan satisfaction or maximum financial gain.
The jury is out on this.

Most of the loft is taken up by comicbooks, Essentials, Masterworks, etc. - some are mounted on the ceiling - with some full-size busts and props thrown in. Unlike your own impressive collection I own a single piece of (small) original art, one autograph (Stan) and I framed one of the No-Prizes (the one from The Man, of course). It's really nothing like that guy's room. (I also open packaging. That room does look a bit like being in FP...)

Yep. It was £300, Ted. Seems like a different person did it, though. Believe it or not, it was an X-Men Masterwork! Volume 31. I had every other edition and that gap was pushing all my autistic buttons. At the time the money was no big deal. I was earning very well and buying whatever the hell I wanted back then. Now, I can think of several jobs around the house needing doing or replacing and wouldn't dream about spending that on a book. Am I getting old and boring or more sensible? Frankly, I have no idea!

LAWay said...

Back from the Kapow comic con, saw a lot of great talks. Unfortunately the queue system was f'd up so didnt get to see the Thor or Green Lantern after over an hour waiting for each. Ah well.

And hey, I know I seem negative, but its because I do love the collection. I get more upset/negative at spoilt opportunities. For example, I absolutely loved the Odin sculpt, best sculpt on the entire series...and before that, I loved the blob sculpt, fantastic!

I dont have a problem with the scale...although looking at it, how big is that crow/raven in relation to Thor!? Anyway, I just feel the colours let it down. It may be accurate to that picture, but those colours choices in the comic I dont like either, and maybe its the reason why the colour scheme is the least available image to find online as it wasnt popular. If voicing my opinion and complaints get heard, and there is a slim chance of things changing for the better (in my eyes - like i said, everyone has different tastes, and if you like it, rightfully say so) than I will keep at it in the slim hope.

Anyway, didnt see any of the figurines at the kapow comic con, a certain missed opportunity. Guys came over from the US to sell on tables! So disappointing from the EM crew, but I understand the tables cost money and they would have had to give up their weekend which is a hard decision.

Anyway, again, anyone seen the batman automobilia collection in shops? Havent found it anywhere.

Robert,
Batman and Cap battled on two occasions.
1. Marvel Vs DC Mini-Series. Voted on by fans, and not in canon....Bats won!
2. JLA/ Avengers Mini-Series. Assumed to be in canon, as it's been mentioned in regular series on both 'sides'.
Outcome...stalemate.

(PS...Superman beat Thor in this one, if I remember rightly...)

Hi guys, just had our own Sci-fi, comic, anime expo here in Melbourne at the week-end and Chris Claremont was one of the guests, got him to sign my Captain Britain #1 !!!! Everyone else had x-men stuff except for yours truly.
Ted, i met the guys from Kirby Krackle and got them to sign a couple of CD's. Seem like nice guys.
Picked up a couple of things from an artist called Stewart Mckenny, whose done some Cpt. America stuff.
All in all-- a good week-end.

Robert said...

Wow. What a cool thing for Claremont to sign, Bagman F.F.F.! Did he say anything about it? (It's great you still have your old Captain Britains. By an amazing coincidence, yesterday I mounted the first seven issues of Cap's old title on my last remaining loft ceiling space.)

Bob, thanks for the info, I bought both when they came out. The mini-series with votes annoyed me - no, actually, it angered me. To me, Batman could beat any non-super-powered character with the single exception of Cap. I thought that battle very one-sided. As for the Busiek (and the Byrne one-shot) stories it ended up a draw. I still think Cap should have won! Anywho, what I was interested to know is what the forum made of a Cap-Bats fight - if they have run one.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Wow! Bagman,Claremont signed your Cap Britain #1!!! , That is very cool. Do you still have the cover mounted CB mask intact??
As for Kirby Krackle, i'm just going to pop onto the itunes store to see if i can find the "ring" song. As they seemed such nice lads ;)

No doubt the great 'Deadpool' will be able to do a better one - at least according to his many 'fans' on recent blogs!
Whilst there is no doubt to (his?)artisan - like talents, I wonder where he finds the time? - If we examine the facts, we know he travels to the African sub continent for work?. However his last 3 visits have coincided with:
1.The downfall of a long established dictatorship in Egypt
2.The uprising of multifactional rebels in Libya who to date have a powerful Western Alliance behind them.
3.Various states of unrest amongst the 'once stable' Arab nations.

Deadpool by name, Deadpool by nature ???

Great idea, Mary. Oddly, my own idea is a variation on that theme. I think we should hijack Dr. Doom's time machine - Reed still has it, right? - and send Deadpool back to 1979 and stop the Tories by killing Thatcher.

That way, maybe my friends and I - in fact most of my school - might get a chance to leave school and find a job.

Hello everyone ... It's a little odd that my recent return has coincided with a Stalker, speculating on my whereabouts.

I suspect this Typhoid Mary individual has a little too much information ... maybe this is the new incarnation of my first stalker Hel.

Volstagg seems like a good challenge for a new mod ... I'll give it some thoughts and may attempt it during my two weeks downtime at easter.

Avalanche looks pretty good - Robocop springs to mind - that would be a decent mod option too.

I echo Teds comments regarding the Blackest Night collection - the quality is superb - I have 3 sets on the go.
One to mod, one to keep packaged and one to display.

Regarding the future of the CMFC - The Mossmen have done a great job maintaining the price at £5.99 but I would be more than happy to pay the same as the DC collection to keep it going.

Mossmen - your new Deadpool objective is to break the elusive 300 barrier.

I like the scale of Odin - don't forget in Norse Mythology the gods were size changers and could be shapeshifters too.

Latest acquisitions - Parallax, Prowler, Quasar, Batwoman and Mr Terrific.

As usual the DC offerings are superb.

Any help or info would be much appreciated.

Hi, Bagman F.F.F. Can't complete the list but can help a little.

#2 Dr. Strange. (Super Spider-Man and the Titans number 224, week ending May 25, 1977). The picture is the same image used for Marvel Treasury #6, incidentally.
#3 Howard the Duck (Captain Britain number 33, week ending May 25, 1977)
#4 Captain America (Captain Britain number 34, week ending June 1, 1977) This image is taken from the 1976 calendar, by the way.
#5 Luke Cage (Super Spider-Man and the Titans number 225, week ending June 1, 1977). It's the famous image of Luke punching through a brick wall only to be faced by guns. Think it was used for an Essential edition cover. Looks to me like Kane pencils and Romita inks.

I am fairly sure there was also a Starlin Warlock image as #6, but not sure where I saw it. I'll try remember when I'm DIYing!

Robert said...

The Cage image is from the cover of "Luke Cage, Power Man" #17, Bagman. Without the banner, other text and with lighter colouring on Luke, the poster image on the back of SSMatT is much more dramatic than the original cover. Let me know if you want copies made of these images.

Robert said...

Flipped through the issues I mentioned, Bagman F.F.F., to see if they said anything about other posters on the Bullpen Bulletins Page and came across what appears to be an original John Buscema Conan and Gil Kane Daredevil centre-spread posters in Super Spider-Man and the Titans #'s 224 and 225, respectively. The unusual size makes me think they were done specifically for these comics and have not been seen outside the UK! They're lovely, particularly the Kane image. It's rather fabulous.

Am I the only one to notice a main site update????

Crowbar still looks silly and oversize.

Great to see Areas - but a bit skinny.

And who is the ladyboy with the fur coat??????

Robert said...

Thanks, Jacadoo, hadn't noticed. Actually, this is the least interested I've ever been in a row of five.

Wrecker looks too lean. He's a chunky, squat bruiser, not some hyper-toned gym bunny. I also agree the crowbar is over-sized. I'd need to check but I seem to remember it was a normal crowbar and then the Wrecker was given power by Loki. Whatever, the origin it looks silly. (I'm also kind of irritated by the position of his thumb. He doesn't really look like he's holding it properly.) I'll buy him, just not convinced he's a great sculpt.

Complaints, part 2: Ares doesn't look like the Ares I know from old Thors and I just detest that girlie look anyway, Destiny holds no interest and I don't buy the T-bolts so likewise for Songbird.

And, Balder. What a massive, massive disappointment.

LAWay said...

Ares, Balder and Wrecker are awful, simply awful.

People say i complain alot...i say others dont complain enough. If others are not fully happy with things, voice your opinions and we can change little things like a sculpt or a paintjob. The attitude of 'meh, its not TOO bad' or 'i'll keep buying to keep the collection going' isnt the right attitude as it just means EM will just do anything without complaint.

Its a shame as Ares could have been so so awesome. Wrecker had great potential, and the Balder sculpt looked nice despite the costume choice.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I actually think the sculpt is superbly executed...it's just not the most iconic Balder look, but the collection is all over the shop. Take the crowbar from buffboy and attach to Juggernaut give him a purple helmet and THOW! FUDD! you have an in scale Wrecker.Regardless of any minor gripes i'll happily stack them in the attic ;)
Nicholas Cage got his stolen Action Comics #1 back.Although technicaly i only borrowed it..

Happy collector's comments here
While I respect people's opinions, I do think that some of the recent negative comments are unnecessary and even unfair & unjustified. If collectors don't complain, then it means they are genuinely happy.
I'm genuinely happy with these:

Ares
Absolutely amazing figurine, actually sumptuous in the level of details and paintwork. Very happy with his body frame too. Powerful chest, and lower body just gives impression of being slim in comparison, to create the effect of a mythologically huge chest.

Destiny
Elegant representation of the character, stilish & mysterious. I love that she's made it into the CMFC.

Anonymous said...

Balder
What's not to like? You may not like the costume choice, but the figurine is beautifully executed and would look great in any display, even if you were just a collector of fantasy characters.
I think it looks lush.

Anonymous said...

Wrecker
C'mon, people. It's a nice figurine which, for £5.99, gives you the closest possible approximation to a Bowen sculpt. While I agree that the hand grasp on the crowbar is ergonomically unconvicing, possibly incorrect, I still find it amazing that EM managed to capture the character dynamically so well in such a small figurine.

Songbird
For me, she's actually one of the best figurines of a female character. Her attractive costume design has transferred very well from the comic book page to the 3D sculpt. The logo on her chest and the patters on her tighs look inredibly well executed. Her pose is dynamic without being over the top. I'm not a huge fan of the character per se, but am totally loving the figurine.

Balder: What I don't like.

1. It doesn't look like any incarnation of Balder from the 1960s until about four or so years ago, and therefore is not recognisable to anyone who hasn't read Thor since the reboot. There is no visual acknowledgement of forty-plus years of his past.
2. It's not even his best look. The later Kirby version of Balder was much better - sleek, bright, heroic, memorable and distinctive. What about the Simonson version? Loud and clunky as it was, at that time Balder had a great helmet and distinctive look. This is bland by comparison and not terribly heroic looking.
3. Balder is also known as 'The shining One'. All of his past incarnations, especially Simonson, have made design or colour nods to this. The modern Balder looks generically Asgardian. No bad thing in itself, but he's supposed to be special.
4. Even over and above the incarnation, the pose is undramatic. Asgardians seldom stand still, they exist in three states: 1) at war, 2) shouting oaths as they go to war, and 3) getting steaming drunk in taverns clebrating past glories from old wars. This Balder looks half asleep or at least disinterested. This guy is a god, for cripes sake. He's about as imposing as Mavis from Coronation Street.

I almost wish Eaglemoss hadn't bothered and just made another rubbish character like Silver Sable. I wonder if I can remove the rug and repaint him to look like Kirby's version...?

max_0888 said...

We have to remember that we aren't paying a lot for the regular figurines, and that the quality is pretty great!!!!

Saying a figurine is just awful...is pretty harsh imo! Awful? c'mon! Maybe not what you hoped for...but awful?...jeez

I agree that a bulkier Wrecker would have been nice. Bulkier...probably meant special size, and special size, probably meant not having Wrecker for now! Which would have been a shame imo! I personnally prefer having this version of Wrecker, than not any.

Balder has the look I wanted. So i'm pretty happy about it. But I can understand why some people wanted an older kirbyesque version. But even if its not the look you wanted, the sculpt IS pretty amazing! I'm not seeing the "awful" there either. I do love the noble pose he has :)

Songbird is one of my fave marvel character. I must admit, i'm in love with the EM sculpt. She's THE figurine i'm the most eager to get.

Destiny is also perfect imo! Right out of the comic page

Ares isn't a character I like all that much, and could have had more pilosity! He's a bit thin too. Id still gladly add him to my collection.

Sorry Laway...I jsut thought you're "awful" comment was a bit strong, so I had to put my opinion in there hehe

Cheers
Max

SinisterVenom said...

I do kinda agree with you there Max, maybe it is harsh to say such figurines are awful. After all the guys at EM didn't have to make these figurines for us, they chose to. Don't get me wrong guys, even I look a few of the figures and give a disappointed sigh, thinking it could have been so much better or it didn't have the look I wanted but you can't please everyone. Look at Marvel Girl for instance, I remember Rich giving us the choice of what costume she should have. Most people agreed on the one she got and I'm sure you all had an image of what you wanted the figure to look like, no? While we got the costume, a lot of people were indeed disappointed and I spoke to some people who admitted wanting to see her in a different costume after seeing the figure (though personally I can't see it looking much different apart from the costume). What I'm trying to say is EM listened to us, tried to give us what we wanted but unfortunately recieved a lot of unhappy verdicts on the figure. I know I couldn't do much better if I tried so I'm always happy with a new figurine to the addition and while I sometimes have my thoughts for improvement (like the recent Prowler's position) I will still praise EM for doing a marvellous job keeping the CMFC going strong and still providing great quality figurines.

Ok, now my speech is outta the way, main site update!.....Oh yeah you guys already heard.

I can honestly say Balder doesn't bother me as much as some people on here. I think he still looks fab despite not being the favourable look, still a great pose. I will agree about Wrecker's crowbar and Ares being skinny but they do still look nice. Destiny and Songbird are the two I'm looking forward to getting out of those five.
Ok time for me to clock in to the land of dreams. Til next time!

Robert, these strange references to Mavis have me intrigued.

I have no real idea about Coronation Street - is this some district in Asgard?

Should we be petitioning the Mossmen to produce a Coronation Street subset of CMFC?

Regarding Aweful figures - I love the next five figures on the web site.

Destiny is almost perfect, Songbird is actually worthy of a Deadpool drool ... nice work Mossmen, I see you have finally found a girlfriend (or maybe a surrogate girlfriend in a glossy magazine).
Balder looks a little festive the way he is leaning with his hips - I agree with Robert that he should be light bright and colourful, however it is still a good sculpt.

Regarding Wrecker - check out the height - he is 93mm tall compared to the 72mm of songbird - he is actually a decent size.

Keep up the good work Mossmen - you're getting there.
The quality has definately improved dramatically since the start of the collection.

The second Deadpool objective of this thread is - CMFC to win the magazine award next year and push DC into second place.

Typhoid Mary .. please be a little more discreet ... not all my missions are for public consumption.

Invader-Zim is another matter - as an illegal alien he is best unleashed in times of trouble and unrest. ... he has a few political figures in his sights beyond the aforementioned treasury Minister.

Your's Truly

I agree with Kirlianeyes comments on each figure. The next 5 are all fantastic. I wasn't fussed about Balder and Destiny but the sheer quality of the sculpts is amazing. Destiny has a very simple design but the elegance of the sculpt is wonderful.
Songbird too. The costume design helps as the bright colours really make her pop.

Even looking past these 5 there are some great figures to come. Spiral in particluar.

Thought i'd add my two-bobs worth about the Wrecker sculpt, according to the Marvel Comics Database --
The Wrecker is 6 feet 3 inches (92mm on the main site).
Balder is 6 feet 4 inches (91 mm).
Ares is 6 feet 1 inch (98 mm).
Going by these stats he should be smaller than Balder(is) but bigger than Ares.(not)
I wonder what the sculpter used as a reference for The Wrecker and how will he look next to the other wrecking crew members if they are made.

Sorry, Deadpool. "Coronation Street" is a long-running and very famous UK soap opera that my mum watched when I was a kid. Mavis was a spectacularly wishy-washy, weak and annoying character.

I just googled her to see it she's still in the programme and she hasn't been in it since the 1990s. (God, I'm getting old.)

Sorry Guys, I'm all for an EM love-in but they don't make these figures for us, they make them to sell and we happen to buy them. I know the old OCD tends to dictate the need to have them all but even so, it's still ok to criticise.

There have been some awful figures along the line (Warlock still makes me shiver)and the Wrecker is certainly not one of the best. I doubt you could find a panel of the Wrecker in his history where he looks that skinny, but I'd rather have him than not so I'll buy it along with all the rest.

I'm glad somebody said Songbird in an earlier post because I've been wondering all week who that was...

Robert said...

I think we have to distinguish between what is a good sculpt and what is a good representation of a character. I actually quite like the Wrecker figure purely as a sculpt of a super-villain. However, it is too lean and defined to be the Wrecker. (The oversized bar and the grip are also aspects I don't like.)

As for criticising Eaglemoss, the DC collection won the Magazine of the Year and it appears that the CMFC wasn't even short-listed. Why is that? Maybe it's because there is room for improvement? There's nothing wrong with criticism, it can often be a sign you care. Imagine if you didn';t critise your kids because you love them...

My two favourite characters, by a country mile, are Captain America and Adam Warlock, Bob. Both are disappointing sculpts - Cap is too scrawny and Adam is just a poor sculpt, although thankfully he is in his classic Starlin outfit. My other favourites like Thor, Jack of Hearts and Shang-Chi are all very strong figures, especially Jack. As you say, Beta Ray Bill and the Taskamster are super sculpts. I also like the Enchantress, one of the few females that looks great. Not crazy about Crystal (she looks like a tailor's dummy) or Mole Man (too large), so they'd be at or near the bottom of my pile. The worst costume is Jubilee but that's hardly the fault of Eaglemoss...

Bob said...

I am one of those that think Odin is a great sculpt and the colours chosen are well suited. It is very unfortunate however that he is out of scale with the rest of the collection. He is larger than any of the other bulkier figures like Thanos, Apocalypse and most of all the Hulk. Odin should be no bigger than Doc Samson or Hercules. Why the discrepancy? The prototype photos suggest he is approaching the size of Sasquatch?? I'd like to suggest such scale would only be reserved for another Asgardian like Volstagg!! For this reason alone, I might have to skip this one figure because he belongs to another scale collection, DC!! I hope EM would not fudge another favorite of mine Lady Sif!!

Bob said...

As for Balder, the modern look is unremarkable and not a classic, iconic version of a well loved character. The costume is too generic and could be mistaken for a common Asgardian foot soldier. It would be best to look back in the 70's and 80's comics and match it with other Asgardian figures released previously.

Hey CGJ, if you haven't read any thunderbolts you probably don't know who Songbird is! But you probably know who she was before, the vilain Screaming Mimi from the Grapplers? Does that ring a bell?

She is such a great character imo! I love what Kurt Busiek and Fabian Nicieza made with her since the begining of Thunderbolts! And more recently, when she was on Norman's thunderbolts team! And when Osborn asked Bullseye, Venom and Moonstone to take her out! Man that was epic imo!
Oh and loved her in Avengers forever too!

You really should check up on her, she's a fabulous character! I'm sure you'll like Thunderbolts!

Morning all,
I have a question for you all. Back when this collection started and you first held those first few figurines in your hand, what did you think? Was it Fantastic! Iron Man is cool or Cap A is a good sculpt?
And remember it was how you felt then. EM have increased the quality as the learning curve hit them. Their style has evolved over the last 6 years. So now Iron Man does look smaller because that was the norm of what we were getting then.
Now to scale. I'm not too fussed about scale. The last Star Wars Collection kept to scale and, for the same price as we pay, the figures are about 1/3 of the size we're still paying. In scale Yoda was about an inch high using about as much lead as Iron Man's left leg, so I felt a little cheated. It shows that the quality invest in this collection shines as we're still running and Star Wars fell at its initial cut off point of 60.
So I think 'PAH!' when a comment about the Mole Man being too big is said. I have a good quality, detailed, value for money figure. Yes, there have been a few not so good figures produced, but take a season of 22 episodes of your favourite TV show, there always a couple of duds in there, so I think we do have a high quality threshold.
And there will always be a nay sayer who wants a figure to look like this/stand in this pose.
This blog now runs in a healthy state now we know where we all stand and the nastyness of the recent past has gone. The cryticism is certainly more constructive then destructive - except when there's not been an update for a couple of weeks, that's when the fights begin ;0)

Your spot on Barnabas, Nearly 6? years ago i was absolutely amazed at those first few sculpts. In fact it was the brilliance of the Thing sculpt that may have been the catalyst for me subscribing. Auld Benjiman Grim is still in my top 10 best sculpts all these years later.
Oh and Robert ( and anyone else receiving STV ) That episode of Dickinsons Real Deal with the guy selling his Thor comics is on at 12.45
Love you all

Robert said...

Thanks, Ted. I'll be watching that later.

Yes, the collection is great value for money, it's laster longer than we expected and I'm very grateful, the range and quality of the characters is excellent and I enjoy the informative and entertaining magazine.

However, all of the above doesn't change the fact that Mole Man is too big. Like I said a while ago, the CMFC didn't win, maybe wasn't even short-listed, for the Magazine of the Year Award and the DC Collection won. Why is that? My wild stab in the dark of an explanation is that there may be room for improvement.

You're welcome, Bagman.

Ted, missed the first ten minutes of Dickinson's Real Deal and was interrupted by nieces and nephew throughout the rest of it so I didn't see the segment with the Thor comics. The presenter was an odd colour...

Tongue piercing!!! That's wot did it , How to offer extra height attachments for any possible Stilt Man figurine. My nephew got involved in some kind o drinking game/dare type crap, his forfeit was a tongue piercing ( his mate is now sporting a tattoo of the North Korean flag on his chest).
So my nephew has this large bar of metal accross his tongue. Upon showing his uncle Ted ,i exclaimed " aw man that's how tae do Stiltman"
An elasticated piece o material with metal bar attachment,
Your standard fig arrives from EM and can be displayed as is, but if you wish to enhance yer regular fig with extra leg extenders, how would you do this in a feasible kinda way??? Well wonder no longer.
an elasticated piece o string that's all it would take, to hold the legs rigid enough to display as a regular unmodified fig. but just like an elasticated waist band it could accomodate extra inches .
The bar would be in a rebate in the base ,just pull the bar oot turn to a vertical position return through hole to release , then add extenders and replace bar.
The Elasticated string could be stretched to special height or reach ultimate " stretch oot" at mega height.
I've just eaten a cadmium battery so i have probably made it sound more complicated than it is.
hugs n kisses
Unkle Ted

Think i would be more excited seeing these new improved sculpts on the older figurines of the collection to be honest.

I mean its cool that EM can get me interested in a character i am not as familiar with because of a good sculpt, but i dont feel the same excitement as back in the early days because of the big names.

robert , haven't bought any comics or books yet as i'm feeling the pinch. It's my birthday on thursday 21st april so maybe i'll request one as a present.

Robert said...

I think everyone's feeling the pinch, MT, so I understand. I asked as I was curious what you bought and whether you enjoyed it. The range of comics on offer is rather overwhelming. Even if you chose to only read, say, Thor, you have nearly fifty years of stories to pick from. And if you go for someone like Spidey, who's had multiple titles since the early seventies (Marvel Team-Up in '72 or '73, then Spectacular in '76, etc.), well, it's hard to know where to start. I'm jealous, though. You have still to read so much great stuff!

Robert said...

P.S. The old Batman series is wonderful, MT. The third season loses its way a bit with the change of format to weekly shows and the introduction of Batgirl but it's still fun.

P.P.S. I'd recommend that you ask for the Avengers Defenders War for your b'day. Classic stuff. It has an incredible cast, fights beween Hulk and Thor, Cap and Namor, etc., great villains in Loki and Dormammu, cracking art from Sal Buscema and the under-rated Bob Brown (with a few covers from arguably the greatest cover artist ever in John Romita) - it's just the 1970s at their best.

Characters in chess sets.
Will they also appear in the CMFC?

Well, this is going to stir a bit of controversy.
Sven, who is responsible for EM's DC collections, has been asked
if the characters appearing in the DC Chess set will also appear in
the main DC Super Hero collection. His answer was:
"... if a character appears in the chess collection, then it's mildly less likely that they will appear in the DC Super Hero Collection. We want to cover as many characters as possible in one form or another, rather than duplicate".

Personally, this makes me a bit paranoid that characters in the Marvel Chess sets
may have less chances to appear in the CMFC. It's something I've been worrying about ever since the chess sets were announced.

Now, let's not jump to conclusions.
Surely if Blastaar and Psycho-Man are in the FF Chess set, we can still see them in the CMFC? Right? And the same applies to all the other awesome characters appearing in the other Marvel Chess sets? Yeah?

Anonymous said...

Exclusive to chess collectors?
I will not speculate, as the comment I reported in my previous post is DC-related and from Sven. There have been no indications from Rich as to how Marvel chess sets and CMFC will interact. But let me say this again: I would be furious if we didn't get some characters in the CMFC just because they're in the chess sets. Mark my words.

I would like Rich to clarify his plans, if any have been made,
or just his view on Marvel chess figurines to also appear as CMFC figurines.

good question KE.

The Fantastic 4 chess set is the most promising set featuring newest characters...pretty big characters. it would be a shame if none of them made it into the collection.

Also...what happened to that Sauron painted pic? You cant say you've seen it and not fill us all in with a link.

Finally...with the Bank Holiday Friday, could we get a quick update tomorrow?

Hi guys, one of the pluses of having an Australian actor play Thor is that the movie opened here (Melbourne)today and i thoroughly enjoyed it, pure escapism, wasn't to fussed about the 3D aspect of it, but enjoyed seeing some more Marvel characters on the big screen. And with that Eaglemoss you have to consider giving us collectors a Destroyer as a special and the warriors three in the next extension.

Robert said...

"Eaglemoss you have to consider giving us collectors a Destroyer as a special and the warriors three in the next extension."

That man talks nothing but sense.

Anyway, really glad to hear that Thor is enjoyable, Bagman F.F.F. I tried to book the advance screening for the coming Monday a week or so back, was knocked back for being too early and then, in the midst of another hectic week, I didn't get round to it and it's now too late. I'll probably go a week on Saturday. Wife keen, too. I think it was the pics of "Thor" with his shirt off that attracted her... or maybe it's to see how faithful the film is to Stan and Jack's vision. Hmm...

Agreed. Psycho Man is one of my favorite villains, and I assumed already had little chance. Lessening that by any amount, however marginal, is disappointing.

It really makes me wish the chess sets were in scale with the CMFC...

Good luck finding something you like, MT!

I like your list, although I can't help but notice the absence of a certain Rigelian robot...

LAWay said...

I hate massive A-Z lists. there, i said it.

it just seems like going through the marvel encyclopedia and listing them as you see them. Anyone can do it, and sure, you will find alot more characters you like that way.

I think its harder thinking of THAT many characters off the top of your head, and when it gets to that stage, thats when you realize you dont really want/need those characters.

I aint saying dont post the lists, its good to see, but just saying how i feel about these epic a-z ones.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I hate every chimp i see, from chimpan A to chimpan Z.
Any list with Ulysses included is a keeper fer me.

Robert said...

I have no issue with using reference books to compile lists. When you get as old as Ted, Bob and I, the old memory box ain't what it used to be. :) And credit where credit is due. MT's lists in the past have been decidedly patchy - Big Bertha!??! - but this one was pretty good.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Heh! good shout for The Gargoyle MT. I had pretty much forgotten him, if memory serves he had an enormous caricature of Puppet Master's head on a teensy body.
Always liked Tyrannus, but hey, a half decent modder with a Damien Hellstrom fig could probably take care of that.
Man, i burned my lugs in the sun

LAWay said...

my point exactly, if you cant remember them, thus they are not memorable, and not a classic character.

Still part of marvel's history, but not important enough that they make an impression, so why fill up a spot with them?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Just watchin a pirate copy of Thor, sorry to say EM your Odin tie in looks nothing like Anthony Horpkinz

Robert said...

Ach, Leigh, you're talking cobblers again. Think about what you just posted for a moment: guys like Thor8, Ted and I have been reading for decades. In my case thirty-five years. With all the other things that have happened in that time - births, deaths, marriages, other relationships, jobs, travelling, homes, friends, etc. - it's ridiculous to think anyone would remember every interesting character at the drop of a hat. Not having perfect recall is not a sign that a character is not worthwhile or did not make an "impression"!

Anonymous said...

OOPS !!

I forgot General Thunderbolt Ross , Rick Jones , Ursa Major , Vanguard , Perun , and Pip The Troll.

The only reason for the extremely long list is just to show how many characters there are left to be cast in lead.

Robert , who's the robot i forgot ?

Robert said...

I have only mentioned him, like, a hundred times, MT! Starts with "R"...

P.S. I appreciate the addition of everyone's favourite decadent troll.

Gremlin said...

Nice list, there are still 4-5 good extensions left in this collection.

PS...if you want to know what Pip the Troll is up to at the moment pick up X-Factor. He has randomly joined the team.

Robert said...

X-Factor??! Seems a rather odd place to appear. I'll have a look next time I'm in FP, Gremlin. Thanks for the tip-off.

LAWay said...

I beg to differ Robert. (plus it gives people a topic to discuss anyway since the lack of update).

If you were given a day to write what marvel characters you would want in the list, without looking up any names or using any reference, we probably would have listed at least 100 of the characters that appeared.

Maybe the collection would have been better without the internet, so that way each time a character came out it surprised you so we didnt have to think. Would you miss any of the characters if you couldnt remember them? Although not knowing who was coming out next in the extension, would people have stayed on when we have hit some shaky characters/sculpt patches?

When people generally make lists of 'greatests' be it film, games, characters, they do it off the top of their head because the stuff is important and personal to them. If we have to do homework and research then surely they are out of place.

So I aint talking cobblers. the fact you have read longer means you should know more characters. You havent forgotten the likes of spidey and thor and all their main characters, and there is a reason.

Robert said...

Maybe you are too young to get my point, Leigh. I also think you may be missing a large part of the appeal of the CMFC for some collectors.

I meet up with some friends every six months or so and we talk about our late teens and early twenties back in the '80s. That was a great time for us all and arguably the best time of my and our lives. Every time we meet, however, somebody tells a story that we had all forgotten about. It's not something minor and obscure. It's something really funny and memorable - and yet, to our collective surprise, we had still forgotten. Two years back, after a gap of nearly thirty years, I bumped into my first (semi-serious) girlfriend and I didn't even recognise her. (Thankfully, she was cool about it.) I read my first comic years before the first girlfiend and that was a few years before the shenanigans with my mates. We're talking a long stretch of time.

Long story short, we forget stuff, Leigh, even important stuff. That's why photographs are so important. They jog our imperfect memories. I defy you to go through some old photos of your childhood and not say at least once, "Oh, I'd forgotten all about that!" or actually have to ask one of your parents who the people with you are or where it is.

More to the point, that's how nostagia works: we see stuff that reminds us of how we felt years ago. I would suggest that for many collectors the fact we do have imperfect memories is part of the appeal of this collection: it jogs our memories of characters we read about and enjoyed years ago.

Conclusion? Mad Thinker, keep the lists coming.

CGJ said...

Not overly fussed with the long wish lists, I just scan past em. I've been reading comics for thirty years and I still maintain that some of the names on those lists are made up.

CGJ said...

Where's CBRBeast when you want him? 'Well, technically since they are all names given to fictional characters, they are ALL made up. Personally I love the long A-Z lists and have started a campaign to have more of them, at least one a day. So there.'

Robert said...

"Not overly fussed with the long wish lists, I just scan past em. I've been reading comics for thirty years and I still maintain that some of the names on those lists are made up."

That made me laugh, CGJ. I had a similar thought a while back when someone mentioned there was a character called Hairbag. 'Surely not?' thought I! But then I checked and, sure enough, there was a mutant with that name! There was a beautifully drawn story when I was a kid that had a villain called the Mindworm. Even then it seemed a terrible name to give yourself. Who's scared of worms? (I know now that the name plays on the verb "worming", rather than the noun, and it's a pretty accurate description of what he did.)

As for CBR Beast, he at least checks his facts, which a lot of people on here, myself included, don't do enough of. I do think it's a shame he was never a child, though. That must be hard. :)

O'Brien, Kevin, in costume as the original Guardsman.

Brian Braddock - done as original and classic Captain Britain. Failing that, Balder or Beast done properly.

Executioner (Skurge).

Recorder.

Tarantula, Terrax or Tana Nile.

(P.S. I used the internet to help.)

Ah, excellent point and comparison Robert, fair enough. I enjoy lists, but personally prefer seeing top 10s etc rather than people listing 100 characters in a-z format.

L - Lionheart
E - Eternity
I - Iron Patriot
G - Goliath
H - Hyperion

Man my list sucks. I too used the net to help, most characters had little appearances. I take it back Robert, looking up characters from books and online simpyl forces us to have rubbish lists.
(would actually love a lionheart, but way down on my wants. Iron Patriot is sadly never going to happen. No good 'E's were left that stood out, I would prefer Atlas over Goliath, and Hyperion in his Ultimates look, which again probably will never happen.)

Perhaps I'll make a new list with LAWay instead...

Ah, Leigh, I thought for a moment you had rescued yourself from the pits of pessimism and negativity and then you slipped back and we lost you!

As for your list, even though I have doubts that a lion chest symbol works well on the female form, I'd still buy four of the five. (Lionheart is probably the closest I'll get to a classic Cap Britain). I don't think your list sucks at all.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Ha,ha Leigh, despite your abject pessimisim i think your list is the opposite of " sucks"....ah..waitaminnit, that would mean it ....blows? ;)
I have to say i have no idea what a Molly Hayes is, although my friend Ron assures me it was an old wooden ship from the American civil war..I would honestly purchase 90% of those listed. Now either i'm easily pleased ( stop nodding your heid so vigorously Leigh, or it will fall off ) or there are a helluva lot of cool charactes still to be done.

I used to love it when I was young just like, Leigh, railing against the world and its injustices, being passionate about life, the universe and everything.

Life has slowed down a tad with the passing of years. Now, if the kettle works and there's some milk in the fridge and a teabag in the cupboard, well, my world seems just fine and dandy.

Oh, and an empire biscuit upgrades the "fine" to "rather wonderful"...
