Avalanche

Just time for a quick update this week, I have a new painted Odin for you and an early stage of the Avalanche sculpt.

Have a great weekend everyone, and if you're heading to Kapow Comic Con, drop by the Comic Book Alliance booth as former CMFC editor Alan Cowsill should be making an appearance. Alan is currently editing a charity book to raise funds for disaster victims across the world.

Went to see the first preview of Thor last night and it was absolutely freaking awesome!!! Such fine actors played their parts well and the film itself was fantastic, filled with action, laughter, superb visuals I could go on. I reckon I'll go watch it again later in the week :)
Seeing the film makes me want more Asgardians in the collection more than ever! We have Odin, Balder and Sif on the way, now let's get some more in like Heimdall and please please please The Warriors Three! :)

Honestly don't remember that, Ted. Memory's even worse than I thought, which is saying something. What issue are we talking? I haven't read the early Thors for ages as they are really heavy going so if it happened before Stan and Jack came back to pull the whole thing together again then I am not surprised I've forgotten it.

Glad to hear the Thor movie was good, looking forward to seeing it myself, although gonna wait after the Easter half term so I dont have to watch it with any little buggers.

Sad to hear if it is Beast posting negative opinions about the blog on other forums. Sure, I may talk some rubbish and stir things up, but if everyone just agreed with everything that went on then what a dull world we would live in.

Thanks for the info, Thor8. I'll dig the relevant Masterwork out when I get back from watching Thor in the cinema. Can't wait.

As for the wedding, it's the 21st century and we haven't yet grasped something that the Americans understood back in the eighteenth century. The general direction of human civilisation for the last few centuries has been towards equality regardless of age, gender, nationality, skin colour, religion or sexual preference - and yet we tolerate, even celebrate, an institution that raises one ("blue") blood line above all others. As an English broadsheet's banner headline shouted in a bizarre act of jubilation, Kate is no longer a "commoner", as if that were some sort of stigma. And what do most people say about this disgraceful situation: "I wonder what her dress will look like?" Or, equally mindless, "Aren't they a lovely couple?" Missing the point entirely. The continuation of the whole notion of royalty is a shameful, depressing and astonishing state of affairs that diminishes the whole country and every person who lives here, regardless of how cavalier they may be about basic principles of equality.

4. Clea
5. Darkstar
5. Diamondbacl
6. Spitfire
7. Moondragon

Robert said...

Oops, eight, I mean.

mrsinister88 said...

You'll be getting Moondragon real soon anyway..... lets hope for sersi and mantis now..... do we want mantis with white or green skin and do we want sersi in classic green or in her sexy red and black avengers costume?

Robert said...

Ah, I meant Moonstone. That's what I wrote the first time and then inexplicably got muddled when I posted a revised list.

Mantis, classic look from her original appearances. If we get her green, I'm repainting her.

As for Sersi, I'm really not sure. I like both looks. I'm rereading the Avengers - I've reached #292 - and, while the stories themselves are just terrible, the red and black costume she wore then is a great one. It even works with the leather jacket. (I also really like the black and white outfit Crystal is wearing, too.) Okay, no fence-sitting, I'll go with the red and black outfit.

BobDiamond said...

mrsinister,
Personally I'd like Mantis in her pink-skinned, Avengers-era look- because I'd want to put her with my Avengers display, not a Cosmics/GoTG group.
As for Sersi, I'm a bit undecided...either a classic Kirby green outfit with 'big' hair- so she can go with Ikaris (who's a bit lonely at the moment!), or the slick 90's Avengers look in red/black with an Avengers jacket (always liked that era..),so she could be in my Avengers display.
Likewise, I hope they make Moondragon in her classic green Avengers look. Have they shown an unpainted proto-type of her yet?

BD

BobDiamond said...

Hi Robert!
There we go- posting at the same time again, and virtually saying the same stuff!
However, I noticed you mentioned that you are not a big fan of early 90's Avengers. Does this include the whole Proctor/Gatherers/Black Knight, Sersi,Crystal love -triangle epic, or the naff stuff that came after this?
Personally 'The Gatherers' story has always been a big favourite of mine. Loved the art and complex story-line. Also, really enjoyed the focus on the Black Knight- one of my fav characters- and very under-used IMO.
Did you ever read The Malibu/ Ultraverse stuff that span out of the Proctor story, when BK and Sersi ended-up in that universe for a while? A very interesting and peculiar moment in Marvel history.

BD

Robert said...

Oh, hi, Bob!

I have just reread the Proctor stuff for the first time since it came out. To be frank (when I am I not?), I'm surprised you like it. I think it is awful. Epting and Deodato would go on to be great artists (on Cap and Hulk particularly) but their art on the Avengers in the 1990s is poor. Women all have ridiculously long legs, stand in unnatural poses, often with butt protruding in a way common to spinal deformation. Some of the page layouts are messy, with characters often breaking panel borders to create confusing juxtapositions. Not a fan of Tom Palmer's inking during this period, either. The writing is inconsistent and uneven. Deathcry started off as some self-assured killing machine and within about six issues was behaving and speaking like a generic bratty sixteen-year-old. Hercules also started speaking differently and so far I've had no explanation. Heroes inexplicably change costumes and characters come in and then disappear for months and months (e.g. Marilla, Luna's nanny). I could go on but you get the drift. I stopped for a 'rest' last night as it was boring me so much and I'm off reading classic Grant-Ezquerra Strontium Dog now. Like swapping a Citroen C5 for a Lamborghini.

Robert said...

Oh, can't believe I forgot Hela and Karnilla! What an idiot!

P.S. Bob, have you read "Assembled: Five Decades of Earth's Mightiest", a book collecting articles by the Jarvisheads? I just looked over the Bob Harras chapters and they're positive, although they do point out that there is a deliberate comparison between the traditional Avengers led by Cap and the more modern, "harder-edged" approach of the Black Knight. That's probably a major reason why I don't like this period. Really, I didn't enjoy the Avengers for most of the time between Stern and Busiek. A long time. When Busiek and Perez came along I thought I had died and gone to heaven...

BobDiamond said...

Hi Robert....so...not your cup of tea then?...You really must stop sitting on the fence with these opinions of yours! ;)

BD

PS...What would you say was a 'golden period' in Avengers history?
Personally, I always think back to the Kang Wars/Celestial Madonna/Wild West/Squadron Supreme era with Dave Cockrum, then Perez on art. Swordsman went out like a true hero- one of the 'best' deaths ever in the MU.

BobDiamond said...

just read your new post after my last one Robert- so we're a little out of synch!
No I haven't heard of 'Assembled'- it sounds like an interesting read, might try and get a copy on Amazon if they have it.
I agree, the re-boot (after the bizarre 'Avengers Reborn' saga), with Perez and Busiek was a return to excellence- a truly classic era- which included the wonderful 'Avengers Forever' maxi-series. One of those epics that you find something new every time you read it.

BD

Robert said...

The book's a good read, Bob. I've just ordered Assembled 2. It focuses more on the Big Three, the ad says.

I'd agree that the Avengers Forever LS was wonderful. Original premise of a team taken from different eras, seeing a disillushioned and indecisive Cap post-Watergate, lovely art, nods to Avengers history everywhere. Great stuff.

Also agree the 1970s stuff was classic stuff. The covers are gorgeous. I loved the Avengers-Defenders War, the Kang storyline, Mantis, etc., etc., etc. However, even as a child I struggled a bit with the 'marrying a tree' Celestial Madonna stuff. Really weird and a bit out-of-place in the Avengers. The only other grumbles I have are with the Vision. He's a wonderful character but I don't understand a) his appeal to females and b) how he, um, you know, consummated his marriage. It all got even more perplexing when Wanda got pregnant. I know she has/ had probability-altering powers but the whole situation raises unpleasant questions about the Vision's genitalia (and what the hell Horton was thinking about when he made a functioning plastic willy). The writers were making a point about narrow definitions of humanity and saying that you don't need to be human to feel, love or think but the routethey took did not work for me in the 1970s and still doesn't work now.

BobDiamond said...

Yeah... all that luuve for the Vision is/was quite interesting... guess it was a kind of Mr. Spock-type of attraction. Supposedly the ladies like a cold, emotionless, strong silent-type as a bit of a challenge!
As for Horton adding all 'the working bits'down below, I think he'd definitely do that. He was trying to make a perfect (albeit artificial) man, after all.

BD

Robert said...

I take your point about Horton building a perfect man, Bob.

Still, the "Spock-effect" to explain the Vision's sex appeal still stretches credibility for me. They are really completely different cases. For all his denial of his emotions, Spock is flesh and blood, and his mother was human. The Vision is artificial. Wanda has guys like Steve Rogers, Clint Barton and T'Challa around her and she picks the plastic guy with the computer voice?!? I know that Bendis and Millar have hinted that her attraction to the Vision is a hint of her being bonkers in the nut but then how do you explain the attraction that others have felt for him? If Horton builds him with all his bits, I can understand that he might also programme the Vision to seek out sexual partners. I'm just not convinced he'd have so many gorgeous females falling for him. Or maybe women are even battier than I realised?

Thanks Bob,i'll do a bit of ebaying later and pick up those T-Bolt issues, Do they still run than comp every month where a reader would send in a famous quote with the word thunderbolts in it? They used the quote on the splash page. I sent in a line from the fantastic Captain Beefheart song "Electricity"..it contains the line "thunderbolts caught easily"....they never used it....i took personal umbridge and have been in a sulk ever since :)
Thanks Robert, Norem art is up in the living room, i've turned my comfy armchair towards it so that i may gaze upons it's sweetness.
Didn't Clint Barton have the hots for Wanda?....I mean what would that do to a mans self worth when a girl you love turns round and says "No thanks , i'm getting jiggy with Metal Mickey?"
Ooh, a bit of a cheeky request Rob n Bob, i'm trying to find a few classic images of Cap and Thor ideally from the 60's or 70's, All my googling to date hasn't found what i'm after, could you pair of old almanacs point me in the right direction?? pretty please ;)

BobDiamond said...

Hi Ted,
Afraid they don't do the 'quote' thing any more in T-Bolts. Also, Man-thing is a regular part of the team now (they use him as teleporting transportation!!), so he's still being used at the moment...probably been in the last 7/8 issues- from when Luke Cage took over the running of the team.

As for classic Thor and Cap images from the 60s and 70s...you've probably seen these ones already- but in my mind you can't get more iconic images of Cap than these 3-

Cap America 111- Steranko Cover
Cap America 193- (Madbomb!)- Kirby
Avengers 4- Kirby

There's the classic Thor images by Kirby on Google Images- I just put in 'Thor 1960s Marvel' and loads came up....but I'm assuming you've done all this already!

Did you mean Cap and Thor together?

BD

Robert said...

What are the images for, Ted? There was a Captain America poster book a year or two back. I took a Steranko image (Cap and Bucky atop a mound of Hydra goons) out of it and it's now mounted on the side of my desk up the loft. There's a John Romita Cap/ Falcon/ Black Panther image on the back of the desk, and it also came from this poster book. The images are about double the size of a standard comicbook.

Bob's suggestions are very good. Steranko's cover to #111 was voted the best Cap cover ever a while back. I have a large poster of Cap #193 (Kirby and Romita) but no room for it so I mounted the original comicbook on the sloped ceiling up the loft.

By the way, you get to put up comic art in the living room?!! Gee, and here I thought I wasn't under the thumb...

Robert said...

Oh, Thor #262 has my favourite Thor cover, Ted. I had this comicbook printed onto one of the sides of a cube bean bag/ foot rest for up the loft... along with a certain Gil Kane DD cover with your good self...

BobDiamond said...

....and If you go to the Comicvine website and type in Thor or Captain America, you'll get every cover they've ever done- I use this site to catalogue my collection.
You are right, I am a super-geek!

Well, to paraphrase Brian's mum, "He's not big and clever, he's a very naughty boy!"

And can't help thinking that trying to see the majesty of Asgard on a laptop is kind of a wasted effort. Trust me, folks, it needs a big screen to do it justice. I will probably go again and see what it's like either in 3D and/ or in an IMAX.

I hate people like Mad Thinker. Watching pirated movies online for free. They will only keep making them if we keep going to the cinema and buying to see it. You cant beat watching these epic films on the big screen.

I saw Thor today and really enjoyed it. He isn't my favourite Marvel character and didnt expect much but it was a really enjoyable film and I certainly look forward to his inclusion in the Avengers films.

If you dont want to pay to see the film in cinemas, wait for the dvd, but dont watch it for free on pretty poor quality on the computer. If you love marvel and want them to make more movies spend your cash. I too want a movie Heimdall, and a Destroyer figurine. :)

Anyone heard the villain to next year's Ghost Rider film: Spirit Of Vengeance is meant to be Blackout? Supposedly he starts out good but is turned into a villain by none other than...The Devil. That's right, so far nothing has been said whether this Devil is referring to Mephisto returning from the first film (despite the fact he isn't actually The Devil) or anyone else as of yet.
Come to think of it, I don't think there is actually a Marvel character known only as The Devil unless I'm being thick. What are your thoughts guys?
PS going to watch Thor in 3D for the second time on Wednesday eeeeee!! Still gets me excited! :D

Ghost Rider was a bad film, any sequel news is equally bad. I dont think I will fully trust future Marvel films unless they are actually made by Marvel.

Saw some set pics of the new spiderman film. You know, the one with the costume that looks nothing like spiderman? Well Peter parker was in there with his nerdy glasses...and a skateboard. And possible lizard pics show maybe physical make up and effects rather than CG, although could be a transition phase.

Anyway, yeh, make mine marvel.

Gremlin said...

The plot of Ghost Rider was good.....Nicholas Cage however destroyed the film with his wooden acting. Seriously it's cringeworthy.

It's a shame Ghost Rider doesn't have many very fleshed out foes to include in the collection. That said there are some nifty supernatural characers like Lilith, Satana and Simon Garth who would make good figures.

Robert said...

I'm with Gremlin. I want to like Nicholas Cage because he's a comic nut but for the most part he's terrible in his films. I'm straining to think of a film of his I've enjoyed since "Raising Arizona". What was, that, the late 1980s?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

"Put the bunny back in the bag"..I remember that line in a movie called Con Air.
Nick Cage (named after luke Cage i believe) May be a wonderful human being but his movies are just annoyingly.....annoying?
Tried to watch Thor online i ended up on a Scandinavian site .There was a big Blonde norse fella and a guy who may well have been Loki. He was holding a rubbish looking Mjoliner looked more like a saveloy.

Remember when he had his sights on being the new Superman a while ago? That would have been weird...but it might have worked. Michael Keaton was Batman after all...though my favourite was Val Kilmer (oooh..controversial!).

As it's been a while since an update and you seem to like lists I have a challenge for you.

Create an new 20-list extension for the collection. The first character has to start with the letter "A"

From then on the next character has to start with the last letter of the previous character. If that sounds easy there are two more rules.

1) No alternates or variants of existing characters.
2) You can't have two characters in the list starting with the same letter. So the list will have names using 20 of the 26 letter alphabet.

It's probably not the hardest to do but hopefully it will make you think a little bit more than you expect too to kill time while waiting for the next update. :-)

Best Batman we will never see? Clint Eastwood.
Man baby if all the cgi speshal effectness was around 40 years ago Clint would have ruled, he's got the trademark grimace down pat..... and Burt Reynolds as the Joker.
As for the actual Batman actors to date.........naah! That intensely serious sausage Mr Bale was quite promising in Batman Begins, then he developed that ridiculous voice whenever he donned the mask, Folk in the picturehoose either couldn't understand what the hell he was saying or just kinda giggled with embarassment. So my nod to the best live action Batman goes to Nicolas Lyndhurst Only fools and Horses christmas special

MT, well meaning as I'm sure you are, you were wrong to post links to these sites. I'm no expert, but you are committing copyright infringement if you download the movie without the consent of the copyrighted movie's owner. That's theft. And stealing is illegal, even if the risk of being caught is negligible. As for the "other blogger", I assume you mean Ted. I'm pretty sure he was joking with the first post and even if he wasn't he did go and pay to see the film a few days later. (It's funny and ironic how you 'stole' a film that's about someone becoming honourable and good enough to lift his hammer!)

Also, the "how dare you slag off one of my favourite actors" comment? How dare we? Because we have freedom of expression and opinion on here. It lets you say you like him, too. That's the way it works on here.

By the way, I'm not starting another war here, and I have made no personal comments or sarcastic digs. I just disagree with your post.

BobDiamond said...

If it was just a case of Tom Cruise or Nick Cage or whoever, not making their 'hard-earned' $20 million or so per film, and having to 'make-do'with a mere $10 Mill- then personally I'd have no problem with people pirating or watching dodgy copies on the internet etc...
However, when I look at the mind-boggling lists of THOUSANDS of credited back-room Joes and Joe-esses at the end of films these days- all of whom are doing their bit to make the star look good, and to give us an amazing experience, then I realise where our money goes to- their salaries. Most of them are no better off than us lot; a lot of those jobs are extremely poorly paid- THAT'S why we shouldn't be cheating the system.
I know I'd hate it if my job was on the line for similar reasons.

BobDiamond, Thanks! Not sure if it's complicated or just bloody difficult. It starts out easily, but once you can't use the common letters like C,B,D,P,R,S,T again it starts to get really tricky to do, especially as you are going to struggle to find a name that ends in Q or J so the 20 from 26 is more like 20 from 24.

i worked on a film and while i am not sure if the sales figures will get it a sequel, i have seen a bunch of links posting to illegal downloads of it and that sucks, because I certainly wont be getting a call back if the film isn't making money.

So yeh, thats why I have a go. Because its illegal. You are on a Marvel blog admitting to stealing a marvel movie. If we were all like you, impatient and selfish not to pay to see these films, they would never get made. Its because of the marvel movies that helped the company continue going strong when they were on the verge of bankruptcy.

People like this ruin the internet for people, give us users a bad name, and potentially destroy things that we enjoy. So reasons are justified. Had we been in a real conversation, and one of us was a member of the law, you would be arrested or fined thousands of dollars. Thats the seriousness of it.

Calling an actor bad pales in comparison.

Your honesty is appreciated, MT. However, if you agree, then go and delete your post.

Gee, anyone would think you were a bit miffed we didn't get an update today! :)

Anywho, I'm off to bed to read some Stronty Dog. Nearly reached the story where Wulf Sternhammer dies. Sniff, sniff...

Word verification is "claeti", sounds like "clatty", which if you're Scots is a rather descriptive term.

Oh, I forgot it was another bank holiday friday.

...wait...no it wasnt!

As for movie tie-ins, its sad if EM are basing it off the reaction of the Iron Man. I loved Iron Man and would have loved a decent movie tie-in. But the sculpting, the pose, it was just terrible. I would have preferred an original comic origins first armour iron man, and the mark iv armour movie iron man. or iron monger.

So word of advice to EM, post WIP pics and listen to feedback if you are afraid of taking a gamble.

Now for a long bitter week of moaning and grumbling.

What I really liked from a Fan-Boy perspective was the subtle inclusion of H.......; and Ted, the thing at the end must have been the C.......

Och, Leigh, you're a bigger killjoy than Thanos. Well done Robert!
I realised after I'd set the challenge that it would be a nearly impossible feat! You can't even get MAXAM from those letters, let alone GAMORA or PIP THE TROLL.
I wonder if DEFENDERS would be easier?? I'll gives some thought to it....

BD

PS..Can you remember any of the main 'bad-guys' from the Infinity Watch series? both Mole-man and Thanos were allies in this case, and they've already been made anyway...

Robert said...

Yeah, the words were a bit unhelpful in naming the Watch members, Bob. I had considered a Starlin theme using "Warlock" and that would have allowed me a bit more leverage to include the Lord High Papal and Oedi. But even that wasn't really much use.

Villains? Well, there was the Man-Beast during the first story arc and Count Abyss during the last, Bob. They stick out most noticeably. Lots of the Infinity Watch series overlapped with the Infinity War and Infinity Crusade and that focused on the mad titan, the Magus and the Goddess, so the series didn't rack up a lot of villains. Actually, a lot of the interesting stuff was the Watch interacting rather than punch-the-bad-guy scenes. And of course Drax had a barney-doobie with the more famous greenskin. Ah, they don't make 'em like that any more. Not nearly post-post-modern enough...

BobDiamond said...

Man-Beast would be a cool character in the collection, and of course the High Evolutionary (he's about the only one who could be used in INFINITY WATCH...)

Anyway...The DEFENDERS...

E Executioner (Enemy)
F Fool-Killer (Enemy)
E Eternity (Ally?)
N Nameless One (Enemy)

Eternals love
Oi! Every now and then, I see bloggers saying they're unhappy with Ikaris in the CMFC. I love the Eternals. The concept is great, and Kirby's original vision was amazing. It was totally necessary to include Ikaris, which also turned out to be a good sculpt. In fact, I'm campaigning for the inclusion of more Eternals, especially Makkari and Ajak.

LAWay said...

Ikarus? Ah, thats who that guy was. Seriously, was that a brand new comic title and they immediately produced a figurine of him...an ugly one at that due to the ugly character design...and yet we havent seen a single Young Avenger...characters who have had important roles in marvel crossover events. Ridiculous.

Not everything kirby-esque is classic.

Take 2: Last post was unclear!

Hopefully, nothing is wrong with Rich in terms of illness or personal issues, otherwise this new game may be in bad taste.

NEW GAME!!
Borrowing Mark Millar's premise from "1985" five villains have crossed over from the Stan Lee Universe to our universe and kidnapped Rich, no doubt planning diabolical doings that don't bear thinking about too closely. Which five villains not in the collection - but who you'd like to see - are responsible for taking such a dislike to out tardy blogger?

Me first: Hela, Skurge, Tarantula, Jackal and Terrax. (Bit of an axe theme going on there...)

P.P.S. Sounds a bit like I have an axe of my own to grind with Rich... really, not true!

Actually it was a plot hatched by the diabolical secret cabal known only as The Silent Ones....
You see, they've not taken it at all well that Rich and EM have thus far ignored the inclusion of their arch-enemies ...(You've guesses the next bit!)...THE SONS OF THE TIGER!!! (let alone The White Tiger- which has utterly dumbfounded and perplexed them).
So...they've sent a team of retro kung-fuuy types to get Rich1e, so that 'negotiations' can commence.
Through discussion with their old pal, F*-M*nc*u, The Silent Ones came up with this squad for their ninja-type mission....

Shockwave
Razor-Fist
Zaran the Weapons-Master
Ghost-Maker
Midnight Sun

Looks like we're gonna have to have Bob, Lin, Abe, Lotus and Hector in the collection...'cause they don't want to be messin' with these dudes!

Yep Rob, Midnight Sun (originally just called Midnight in 'Shang-Chi MOKF') is the guy who later fought the Silver Surfer in some naff 90's adventures with those bizarre discs strapped to his hands and feet. However, he didn't have them when he first appeared -that was the 'resurrected/ cosmic' version.
Midnight is actually Shang-Chi's adoptive brother (brought up by Fu Manchu) and first appeared in Marvel Special Edition #16(2nd appearance of S-C), and died in the same issue!
He's a character more famous for being dead than alive; and featured as one of the first 'Legion of the Unliving' members in the classic 70s Kang/Avengers story.
Strangely enough it was Jim Starlin who first drew him in MSE.
He'd actually make an interesting figure (in original look only!), and would be dead easy for apprentice EM modellers to paint!(all black...)

BD

PS.....God we need a new up-date!

Robert said...

Oh, just missed you, Bob!

Thanks for the info. I only ever got my hands on the later MoKF issues with Zeck, who I dislike because his people always looked as if their limbs were attached by loose cords, they just seemed to dangle like an over-used Mego toy's limbs. The Gulacy stuff looks wonderful; I saw some in B&W in a UK reprint title decades ago and it was gorgeous, stunning stuff. It was very cinematic and seemed heavily influenced by Steranko, which is no bad thing, but with stronger anatomy and phyical realism. I'd love the Masterworks to reprint these comics but of course there's the old problem of Fu Manchu copyright. Although, I can't see why something can't be worked out. No reprints = no money for anyone.

WE WANT A STAN LEE'S FIGURINE!!!

Anonymous said...

Igno-rant
LAWay, why not show us the characters you design and let us judge if they're better than Ikaris?

The more I read your comments, the more I get the impression that you don't get the essence of the Marvel Universe. Your opinion seem increasingy whimsical and biased in a way that I can only assume comes from your ignorance of the history of the House of Ideas.

And yet you got the audacity to critique Jack Kirby's vision, when in fact the Eternals are widely acclaimed as a genius creation in terms of both concept & design.

You stike me as someone who thinks Kakfa is a new fragrance from Calvin Klein, and Picasso a new car from Peugeot. What next? Remove Shakespeare from history of literature just coz you've never read Hamlet?

Thank god CMFC editors understand the Marvel Universe and they will include characters that are important for reasons that matter.

And that's my rant, folks.

Anonymous said...

A balance of young & classic
Now, I'm all for the inclusion of modern characters, and I love Young Avengers. I want them in.
If it's true that they should be in coz they had significant roles in Marvel crossovers, then by this logic the Eternals are 1000 times more worthy of inclusion. They represent a MU area which includes the Celestials, and collectively they have been involved in some of the most pivotal events in the MU.

It's important to cover the MU well, with a good mix of classic and modern. But, to use an analogy, if the CMFC was a partwork on the history of music, it would be absurd to include Eminem, Radiohead and Lady Gaga but exclude Bach, Beethoven and Stravinsky. And to say that Bach's music is ugly would be not just a blasphemy, it would be a sign of utter and complete ignorance.

I want Hulkling & Wiccan, for the modern Marvel they represent, but I also want characters like Hyperion and Starhawk, for the classic Marvel they represent. Both sides, classic and modern, are fascinating and exciting to me.

End of rant no. 2

Robert said...

Jeez Louise, that was some rant, K-Eyes!

While I think Leigh is often wide open to criticism, your attack was preposterous silliness. All the insults about not knowing famous artists from a make of car, I mean, was that necessary? And, maybe more to the point, are you okay? Seriously, the post was the work of an unhinged and/ or overwrought mind.

Before I go, shaking my head with amusement and astonishment, I have to question you on one assertion: "...the Eternals are widely acclaimed as a genius creation in terms of both concept & design."

Acclaimed by whom? With what evidence are you backing up that assertion? Can we have sources, please, because that is not my impression at all. Sales-wise, the four volumes amounted to, respectively, 19 issues (and one annual); 12 issues; 7 issues; and 9 issues with one annual. Hardly a ringing endorsement - and that's with BIG names like Gaiman and JRjr on board for volume 4.

I read the original series and the later 12-issue limited series drawn by Sal Buscema, as well as numerous brain-numbing appearances in the Avengers and Thor. Each time I have been bored rigid. Jack was a genius and the designs do look good, but not everything he did was wonderful. Respecting, admiring, even venerating someone is fine but you have to retain the ability to distinguish between what is great and what is, well, mediocre. I mean, Devil Dinosaur, anyone?

Word verification, I kid you not, is "pickaxed"!!

Wow...got to say one thing- Robert, you do your homework!

As for The Eternals...granted they're not Kirby's greatest solo project- that goes to DC's 'New Gods' I would say- but they have become over the years, a respected and well-established corner of the MU, with concepts that have had repercussions through many major story lines and series -the whole 'Earth X' trilogy is based on Kirby's vision for instance. Certainly they have had more impact on the MU mythos than The Young Avengers(so far...), and I'm talking as a Young Avengers fan...and therefore should have some more representation than they do at present.
Sersi would be the next natural inclusion- because of her Avenger- ties. Makkari would be next, due to the retro-vamping of his history, seeing as he is now known to have been the Golden Age hero The Hurricane. Got to say however, that the coolest costume goes to the enigmatic Ajax.

K-eyes can come across as full-on in-your-face, bombastically enthusiastic at times, but I for one prefer that to dismissive, negative comments from people who have a very limited knowledge/ narrow interest in the genre. Not mentioning any names... :)

haha I say I dont like a character and dont agree with everything an artist does, and get insults, like it is wrong to have an opinion. KE may be enthusiastic but puts it across like a spoilt, temper tantrum of a man-baby.

The Eternals are just something I dont like. I dont like many of Marvel's 'space' titles, and the designs are look like a parody of Jack Kirby. Sure he was given freen reign on them, so perhaps its too much kirby. I like his drawing style, but dont think that everything he does is gold.

I do honestly prefer the more grounded, relatable characters and events, the more modern marvel era after they got rid of all the 90s cliches out of their system. But thats when I started reading comics.

So its all opinion. While I dont like Ikarus' design, I could easily say I have character designs better than it. But its opinionated. I would fully expect people to disagree and have their own opinion. I would also expect many people dont like the Eternals or have little care for them, much like there will be those who love them. People aren't stupid for liking and disliking things, nor does it give them more or any less knowledge or understanding of a subject.

Thats my grown up rant. Now pick up your toys and head back to your pram. :P

For the update, perhaps the character who is in the next update has some sort of super injunction filed against Rich.

Ok just to inflame thing's even further.

For future extensions, inclusion parameters should now focus on Cup Size.

I like comic book girlies.

I know that some of you long for more beef cake - because you're entranced in a homo-erotic daze, but I want boobs.

Marvel comics is responsible for shaping what an ideal woman should look like and hence my choice of wife.

All hail the house of Ideas and their pervy ways.

Deadpool said...

On a more nostalgic note ...

I long for the days when Peter Parker was at university - saving the world between lectures - preserving his secret identity.
When not every story was about some world shattering event.

I think Marvel has lost its way somewhat and needs to rethink its strategy.

Sometimes saving a pretty girl from a lunatic on a glider is more fun than staged or laboured tales of Armageddon.

I think that it is time for Marvel to do a reboot.
Kill of most of the Heroes and Villians or depower them.

A reboot allows the MArvel universe to go back to grass roots, new origins, new powers, new back stories for our old favorites.

Oh and have I mentioned boobs ... more boobs and bikinis too.

I used to love first appearances and What if or event What the ?

I have an idea for a new figure based on the "What If" premise that Britain had developed the Super Soldier Serum.

A new story, origin and character for an old favourite Captain Britian.

Watch this space ....

Deadpool said...

How about a game to close this weeks blog ...

Which character would you reboot.
What would his origin be and the extent of his powers and Abilities.

Captain Britian - replaces Captain America entirely as the Iconic hero of world war 2.
He is a spitfire pilot fatally wounded in a dogfight above the south east of England.

His body stolen from the morgue and reanimated using the super soldier serum and the ancient wisdom of Merlin the Magician.

Armed with the Vibranium Shield donated by the king of Wakanda, Excalibur and the Bow of Robin Hood, he was the nemisis of the Arcane Creations of Nazi Gemany's Operation Blitskrieg.

Deadpool said...

Reboot - SpiderMan
The Radioactive spider initially gave Peter Parker the ability to communicate and control spiders.
His telepathic link allowed him to see through their eyes and use them as spies.

As time progressed, to his horror he discovered he could transform into a Spider with powerful limbs, mandibles, various types of venom and an almost impervious armoured hide.

Finally he discovered he had the ability to shrink or take on the form of any type of arachnid as well as retaining strength and agility in human form.

As his abilities manifested he developed an almost insatiable need to feed ... on human flesh.
An additction that he used his skills as a chemist to keep at bay ... most of the time ...

Deadpool said...

I have another idea.....

What If -- the Marvel Universe was subjected to The Blackest Night.
Initiated by Black Lantern Loki .... spreading death and Destruction on Midgard.
Featuring .....
Green Lantern Captain America
Red Lantern the Hulk
Star Saphire Carol Danvers (Drool)
Agent Orange - Iron Man
Starring
White Lantern Thor.

Bob, had to agree with your last post, the closing paragraph in particular. It was just a pity that Blake couldn't disagree with Leigh in a less insulting way. Admittedly, it is kind of hard NOT to disagree with Leigh but, still... :)

As for the Eternals, I'm not convinced they deserve any more spots. Sersi, yes, for her lengthy spell in the Avengers. The Eternals as a group? Nah. They're the Rolling Stones of Marvel comics: somehow they've been around for years and they're still rubbish.

Robert said...

Nice to have you back safe and sound, Deadpool.

Captain Britain reboot? Just go back to the way he originally looked with costume and quarterstaff. Why they changed it, I'll never understand.

Deadpool said...

Deadpool - Reboot.
A mild mannered English Engineer is enlisted in the British Secret service.

His mission to "Engineer Dissent in North Africa and the middle east while promoting Democracy".

Captured by Islamic extremists and taken to Iran, he is murdered and dumped in a mass grave near the Iranian Nuclear facilities.

Seepage from the facility filled the mass grave turning it into a checimal soup - a pool of the dead.

The interaction of the chemicals with the x-factor in his DNA revived the Engineer as Deadpool.

Almost unkillable due to his insane regenerative powers.
Immune to all forms of radiation and chemical injury he became a mercenary but continued to secretly work for the UK government hunting and killing terrorists and occasionally posting comments on the CMFC.

I kind of knew I'd get a response to my last post! :)
Leigh...or lwayangelcrusher (where's that one come from??)..it's not the disagreeing with other people's opinions I took exception to- God knows that happens all the time on here, and it keeps things lively and interesting- however, what came across in your response to K-Eyes post was the way you just blatantly p**sed all over his suggestion.
Personally I don't give a monkey's if you like The Eternals or not..that's not the issue.
...And I love the bit where you say ' Thats my grown up rant....'
Now if that was you being grown-up, I'd love to see you in childish-mode! :)
Also, could you please explain this part..I'm afraid I just didn't get it:
'Ikarus? Ah, thats who that guy was. Seriously, was that a brand new comic title and they immediately produced a figurine of him...'
You are aware he's been around since the mid 70's, right?

Anyway..'nuff said, as a great man would say..

Bob, why don't we make arrangements to get Leigh and Blake in the same room and just bang their heads together? Years ago I saw a neighbour do that to his two sons and it worked a treat. :)

Agree DP, I enjoyed Spidey taking on some third rate doughnut like the Ringer, while trying to figure out how he get get Aunt May out to the bingo, so he could get fired in about Gwen.
Perhaps a "Life on Mars " story arc could be fun. Deadpool transported back to 1972..cool Daddy-o.

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I really expected an update today. The problems with blogger.com happened at the exact most inconvenient time.

Hopefully dan the art editor can make a little guest appearance this week instead

mgf said...

Perhaps EM are irritated that links to illegal file sharing sites were posted directing people where to nick the Thor movie.

I know I would have been.

There have been two public holidays falling on a Friday in the UK in the last month, and perhaps the chess set is taking up time as well, what with all that travelling back and forth to Arbroath to teach the beautiful obsession to the Picts.

Strange that we've lost a big chunk of the recent posts...It was getting quite interesting!

I contacted Ted about the problems, hoping if it was just my computer, and he wondered the same thing, MGF.

Anyway, it seems like an age since we last got an update...

what happened was blogger.com had a maintenance on wednesday which they had problems with. don't know the exact problems but i know to overcome them they have had to delete all the posts made between the maintenance and this afternoon

mighty_marvel said...

from what i can tell its not just the CMFC blog, but all blogs hosted by blogger.com that have been affected

Thanks for the info, Mighty Marvel. That's a relief. I would miss you guys if this place shut down for good.

Are we due a subby pack anytime soon? I have been hardly able to sleep a wink waiting for Firestar to land on my doorstep. ;)

And Cannonball in entirely the wrong costume choice.

I still rue the fact that we could be on the verge of building an original look New Mutant team but instead we have swimming-goggles-looks-like-Havok-rubbishy-costume-rubbishyson

Hope Rich throws us a bone soon, I'm starting to have moments of sobriety where I wonder why I bother checking out the site every day

I think the Firestar/Cannonball pack has been delayed by the recent bank holiday situation.
I personally love the Cannonball sculpt and am glad that was his costume choice.

I couldnt even sign in to blogger today so had my worries we wouldnt get an update cos blogger seemed down. Sad. Been 5 weeks now? I expected something to creep on the forum in the meantime, but alas, no.

Here's hoping for a giant epic update on Monday.
