Avalanche

Just time for a quick update this week, I have a new painted Odin for you and an early stage of the Avalanche sculpt.

Have a great weekend everyone, and if you're heading to Kapow Comic Con, drop by the Comic Book Alliance booth as former CMFC editor Alan Cowsill should be making an appearance. Alan is currently editing a charity book to raise funds for disaster victims across the world.

Subbys arrived.

Cannonball is rather good but a little 'forward heavy' with his stance. As a result is being displayed high up away from grubby fingers that will see him do a swan dive invulnerable or not.

Normally I am partial to a flaming hot redhead, Firestar is a step up from Crystal, but she is no Jean Grey

All guesses wrong. You'll kick yourselves, guys. It's actually pretty obvious. Think about it this way: whose POWER would make her ideally suited to being a private detective.

As for CBR Beast, I've just had a run in with a moderator by the name of Brian Cronin over on the CBR message boards. A nice guy called T made a comment about the depiction of female characters and got brickbats. (He basically said the old airhead stereotypes have been replaced by equally stereotypical super-empowered feminists.) One guy said he'd never get laid. A woman called Sara had a right go, saying he was a bitter little man in a basement, etc. I posted "PMT, Sara?" as an ironic insult, as she clearly thought it okay to say whatever she felt and wondered how she'd feel to be on the end of personal comments herself. (She didn't get the irony.) Only at this point did Cronin step in and, in tones you'd use with a child, told me to "cut it out". I replied that not only was I suprised that irony was banned but, much worse, why was it okay for others to say worse than me? That seemed dreadfully inconsistent and unfair at best. Anywho, Sara apologised for her comments, I apologised for my comments and T said it was forgiven. In other words, we sorted it out ourselves. Like adults. THEN Brian deleted all the comments about this! I have no clear idea why. I wrote a reasonable comment (basically the above) to him about this and it was deleted and ignored. Long story short, if that's normal stuff on the CBR site - I've only posted about 40 times and this has happened - then they are welcome to the Beast and they are welcome to him. Obviously, it's not a place for independent thinking, adults sorting out their own disagreements or any sort of criticism of their unfair and unfathomable moderating.

P.S. Did you know that in the rules the CBR site also bans the use of ums and ehrrs?!! The reason for this so ridiculous you really need to go and read it. It's like Big Brother. (Ironically, my signature on the CBR site is a quotation from "1984". Couldn't make it up...)

BobDiamond said...

Robert..."whose POWER would make her ideally suited to being a private detective."

Could it be Sue Storm- the Invisible Girl?

BD
PS.. I didn't know Brian Cronin did Blog stuff on the CBR website, apart from in response to his Comic Book Legends bit (which I avidly read once a week). Which Blog/ topic were you posting on Rob?

Robert said...

Well done, Bob.

Um, the posting was in response to the Top Five Goofy Things in FF #21-25. Most of what I described has gone, although last I looked it was still apparently okay for someone to say that another person would never get laid. Even if that has also gone, that and worse had no impact on the moderator's sensibilities until I made my admittedly sexist joke as a retort to Sara's attack on T. I really do not know why I was in the wrong and the other stuff was acceptable.

By the way, "um" and "err" are considered synonyms of "Screw you!" on the CBR site (according to their rules). Whenever I have used these contructions in the past, it has meant I am unsure, or that I am straining to remember or think of something. Is it an American thing to use it insultingly, 'cause it was a surprise to me that it could mean that?

BobDiamond said...

The 'um' and 'err' censoring is one of the most bizarre things I've heard of!
American web-sites are so strange sometimes...reminds me of the time I was mentioning Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion as a possible series for a figurine collection on over on The SHFF, about a year or so ago- and they CHANGED his surname! (something like-believe it or not- MoorROOSTER!!!)- I was amazed! The Mods did change it back however- ('cause they found it just as hilarious), when I posted how ridiculous it was.
It's the 'parent' Blog -site that make these rules I believe- not the actual site itself, and they're always worried about being shut-down by the shadowy 'Big Brother' Watch-Dogs if they don't comply to their extremely strict 'rules'. Hence the fact that The SHFF site had to start from scratch about 14 months ago- not because of their own blog, but because of another Web-sites 'misdemeanours' , under the same umbrella 'parent' company. ...Couldn't make this stuff up, as they say!

What a ridiculous insult to say someone would never get laid. We all know first hand that all the foxiest of foxy chicks LOVE a guy who posts on a blog about superheroes and comics.

Did you not see the comic geek on Take Me Out? Paddy had to lend him a dirty stick so he could get out of the building alive

Robert said...

A "not getting laid" comment could be in jest. I mean, I'm not suggesting we get so precious that a bit of ribbing, even fairly near-the-knuckle stuff, is completely out of bounds. The difference is that the comment was almost certainly a serious dig. Even if it wasn't, how a comment like that can be fine and my obviously joking PMT post was unacceptable has me scratching my head. After T was beaten over the head by a female poster for saying that writers were over-compensating with their characterisation of "strong" females, I wrote something along the lines of "T, I look forward to hearing your thoughts on homosexuals and Muslims next". Obviously I was making light of the whole storm in a teacup. But that was deleted, too. Maybe if the definition of what's okay and what's not okay was consistent I could accept it, but from this example it's just arbitrary. If that's what it's like on these forums then thank goodnes I don't spend much time on them.

Subby pack arrived. (New mailing company?)

Cannonball is OK. He was coming into Marvel when I was going out, so I recall the X Uniform, and would have preferred him like that, but the sculpt is good and the costume choice is fine. As previously mentioned he's a gnat's whisker from toppling, but does not, and that's what matters.

Firestar is utterly loathsome and everything I despise about Marvel females. A derivative nothing of a character, with a "will this do?" costume which an eight year old could have created in the minutes between his Mum calling him for tea and wandering in from the garden.

The only upside is I might be able to find some clever cove who could turn her into Spitfire. The actual sculpt itself is well done, but so talented are these people they could sculpt a stool.

The best part of the pack is knowing Triton is just a month away.

Igno-rant
I decided to repost my rant at LAWay's comments on Ikaris.

LAWay, why not show us the characters you design and let us judge if they're better than Ikaris?

The more I read your comments, the more I get the impression that you don't get the essence of the Marvel Universe. Your opinions seem increasingy whimsical and biased, and you spurt out negative comments in a way that I can only assume comes from your ignorance of the history of the House of Ideas.

And yet you got the audacity to critique Jack Kirby's vision, when in fact the Eternals are widely acclaimed as a genius creation in terms of concept and in terms of design.

You strike me as someone who thinks Kakfa is a new fragrance from Calvin Klein, and Picasso a new car from Peugeot. What next? Remove Shakespeare from history of literature just coz you've never read Hamlet or coz you do not understand its greatness?

Thank god CMFC editors understand the Marvel Universe and they will include characters that are important for reasons that matter.
That's why the CMFC is amazing.

Anonymous said...

... and that's my rant, folks.
Enjoy.

LAWay said...

sounds like that CBR forum is a f'd up place. Women can also say what they want. Afterall....it's an actual female...on the internet...interested in comics!!!!

Anonymous said...

So... LAWay (again!), you think Young Avengers should be included in the CMFC coz they played important roles in recent Marvel crossovers. I agree. However, by the same logic, it would be absurd if the CMFC did not cover Eternals like Ikaris (and hopefully also Makkari, Ajak and Sersi). Whether you know/like them or not, the Eternals have played pivotal roles in the Marvel Universe, especially the Celestials.

I love the Young Avengers, and hope to see them in the CMFC soon. However it is important to strike a good balance between new characters and classic characters.
To use a music analogy, if the CMFC was a partwork on the history of music, it would be absurd to include Eminem, Radiohead and Lady Gaga but exclude Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. To say that Bach's music is ugly, it wouldn't be just a blasphemy, it would be a sign of utter and complete ignorance.

I like Young Avengers for the modern Marvel they represent, and I like the Eternals for the classic Marvel they represent. Both are wonderful, important and exciting. The CMFC must not be distracted by fleeting trends of 'popularity' or 'coolness'. It must continue to pursue ultimate exploration and knowledge of the Marvel Universe and its history and evolution.

Blogger went down almost immediately after I posted the Deadpool - Reboot alternative origin.

After a slap on the wrist (which reference to will probably yield another slap), I will mention it no more.

I received Cannonball, Firestar, Dr Mid-nite and another Green Lantern today.

Even though I detest Cannonball as a character, it is a great figure. I will be ordering 3 more for modding.

Firestar is of the same standard as Crystal - NOT ENOUGH CURVES.

The DC figures were both excellent and the latest Green Lantern will make a great donor figure (onece I've ordered another 3).

Free Comic book day had its highs and lows.
The Marvel contingent was crap.
However the jewel in teh crown was a free comic called WORLDS of Aspen.

The best artwork I've seen for a long time with some intriguing stories and of course - lots of curves. Violet, Fathom and Lady Mechanica have piqued my interest.

Has anyone else found that there is a big delay in receiving Blackest Night figures?
My subscription has stalled at issue 5.
I've been in touch with Eaglemoss and they recon that stock has just arrived at their distributiuon center in Jarrow.

I really enjoyed the Thor film and would recommend it to everyone.
A nice cameo appearance by Hawkeye... did you notice that Agent Coulson refered to Agent Barton as his Eyes in the Sky? .... of course you did.

And todays game ...

What is your conspiracy theory for why blogger went down.

A cyber attack by Islamists trying to find out who was involved in destabilising North Africa and parts of the Middle East perhaps?

I feel another slap or even a solid booting heading my way ...

Bracing for impact ....

Who Knows ... maybe certain individuals have been using blogger sites like this for low level comms chatter :)

Today's subby-packs were a real mixture of excellence, originality and (a little) awkwardness.
Firstly, Marvel's Cannonball is an amazing figure- not a fav character of mine, but the sculptor's has raised him from mediocrity into a truly unique and dazzling figure- certainly amongst other Marvel figs.
Firestar isn't as boring as some are making out, and is a definite step-up from the dullness of the Crystal and Rogue figures. The painting isn't as plain as it looks in the photos- great details on the forearm costume-design. Face is very good too.
The DC ones really show the size differential to the Marvel ones this time- Batwoman towers above Firestar. This is the weakest figure of all of them- the pose is odd, as if she's not quite sure what she's going to do next.
Dr. Midnite on the other hand is superb. A strong imposing figurine with excellent details-the owl itself is a work of art.
All in all a very good and welcome bunch.

Well done EM for the continuing level of excellence, and for constantly striving for subtle new and original poses for this wonderful collection.

Hey Bob me old Diamond Geezer, Opened the Firefly fig she's naw bad, i wasn't doubting the quality of the sculpt, The character was introduced via a cartoon during one of my breaks from Marvel, I find it hard to raise wny kind of interest in the character at all,If EM wanted to make a fig who first appeared in a cartoon, i would have went crazy in the coconut for Herbie the robot from the old FF cartoons.
Did the conan cartoon have a really annoying "Phoenix" sidekick. "The really annoying cartoon sidekicks collection" would certainly garner my support.

Picked up my subby pack. Well done on Firestar and Cannonball....both are very good sculpts. Cannonball is obviously the better one due tot he dynamism of the sculpt aswell as the very good flame effect on his blast. He is on the first row of my XMen shelf now.

Firestar aswell is a good figure, a lot better than people give it credit for. I think many peoples problems are either they don't like the character or don't like the costume. Aside from that the sculpt itself is very good, much better in hand than in any picture I have seen. The paintjob is good, the detail on the flame and her face is superb and I like her pose. OK so she isn't in the league of sculpts that Cannonball, Spiral, Beta Ray Bill, Taskmaster and Annihilus are in the sculpt does the job.

Not fussed about Triton next but after that we have Ares, Destiny, Wrecker, Balder and Songbird who I can't wait to get my hands on.

i'm not trying to wriggle out of anything robert. Some people who haven't seen the thor movie may prefer a surprise rather than to be told of cameos before they've seen it. Watch a trailer - fair enough , but stuff that can only be seen in the movie should only be spoken of in private as it spoils things for people. Next thing you'll be saying that it's okay to tell people on here that haven't watched the movie how it ends.

I don't deviate one iots from my view of Firestar, much for the reasons Ted has. She was a throwaway cartoon character, and should have been left in the same Marvel purgatory as H.E.R.B.I.E.

Having lived with the
Cannonball figure for a few days I really think it is something of a triumph. I am not overly familiar with the character but the sculpt is extremely impressive. The more I look at him the more I like him.

Like Red Skull and Baron Zemo before he's a really nice surprise.

As mentioned above though the real gem of the collection might come from a most surprising quarter, for me at least, and that is Spiral. If it's half as good in the hand as it seems from the images I may well have a new most loved figure.

here's a question, and it does relate to the collection!

Wayhey!

How many of you like marvel movies/games/tv shows? And do you buy any merchandise based off of them, whether its statues, busts, acion figures?

The movie iron man had a poor response supposedly, but is it because people who watch the films generally dont buy merchandise of them? Or was it a one off because it wasn't a good figurine?

If you could have any movie/game/tv show related figurine to the collection, who would you pick?

I'll go with an X-men Wolverine in the black leather costume. Because of those films, it started a new era for marvel in the cinema.

as for the collection, i would prefer to see young avengers and teams completed. Of course, the longer it takes for EM to keep them out, the longer people will stick with the collection until those teams are completed.

And its the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection. Nothing in the title suggests 'comic', thats just the general feeling of what marvel stands for, but nowadays it stands for so much more.

You could argue the term 'classic', but EM already broke that rule within the first couple of figurines with modern day costume variations of characters, as well as that movie iron man special.

So...did EM start out with the wrong idea on how the collection is defined, and does it make it confusing now?

Tritonic beauty
Actually I think Triton is amazing. This nice figurine represents all that's great about the CMFC. Little masterpieces that pay tribute to every awesome character in the Marvel Universe.
Where else would you find such fab Triton figure that's as fab as any A-Lister's figure? I praise EM's sculptors, and in this case the artist has rendered the character's design exquisitely. Great details, great pose. Maybe it's coz I'm a huge Inhumans fan, but for me Triton is super exciting. One of the highlights of the year.

LAWay said...

maybe its because you are a big inhumans fan KE.

For me, Triton does not represent everything good about the collection, it highlights the worst of it. A generic looking character that cant even be made to look exciting in a pose with a poor and simple paintjob.

the females are another reason why the collection has negative points, a-listers included.

SinisterVenom said...

Now now Leigh, not all the females are that bad. Sure there are the let downs like Crystal, Rogue, Marvel Girl etc but there are some good ones in there too such as Jubilee, Psylocke, Enchantress, Scarlet Witch etc.
Of course you may not agree and some others may not, we all have our own opinions after all.
