Will Rich be back Friday???

...No I'm here Thursday.

Hey guys, so I’m back from my extended holiday to New York and knowing how my Fridays usually end up, thought I’d update a day early.

The All-Father!
First up, I’d like to mention the Odin special. Having looked through a vast number of Odin’s appearances, from Kirby to Coipel, I can officially say that the All-father has had more costumes than any other character. Clearly a design choice by Kirby, Odin literally changes his outfit every single appearance. At first, I thought that there would be elements that remain the same (after all I seem to remember Odin looking a certain way) but when comparing images I found that the entire costume changes; he has a cape (with or without collar) as often as not, he goes from horned helmets to large ornamental hats, his look frequently goes from Cosmic to Viking, chainmail to modular armour… the list goes on.

What this means is that we’ve not fully picked the costume for Odin yet but essentially want to have him with the eyepatch, horned helmet and a cloak/cape. The image below is one of the images that stands out but I’m not sure we’ll be matching this exactly.

Anyway, while the sculptor and I work through these issues, I am happy to confirm that we’re aiming for an April-May 2011 release to coincide with the Thor film. I’m also aiming to have Odin no bigger/more expensive than the mid-special price point – £15.99. (He may be £10.99 but no promises) He won’t be as tall as Galactus/Watcher etc… The reason for this is very simple: in the comics Odin is generally drawn quite big and bulky but not super-sized, in fact he’s listed as 6’ 9”.

The Mutt
Right enough Odin-speak, let’s move on to Lockjaw.
The debate kicked up by the suggestion that he may come with another figure has been really interesting and has certainly provided food for thought. At the moment we’re not ruling out producing Lockjaw on his own (if he does indeed get made). The only reason to suggest having another figure was that I thought it would be nice to try and give you guys a little extra. The suggestion that Lockjaw should be accompanied by another character didn’t come from management or marketing, and was simply an idea I had. Looking at the size of Lockjaw, I imagined that he’d be priced between £15.99 and £18.99. If the figure was going to be priced at £18.99, I thought it would be good to give you all an extra – possibly smaller – (in the case of Luna) figure. There should be no suggestions that we are adding Luna or Maximus to make this special more expensive, if anything I imagine other departments at Eaglemoss would prefer not to include an extra figure.

But the debate has been really good and I agree with many of the comments that a solo Lockjaw would be a good special. We’ll just need to get the size/material and costs right at our end and I’ll certainly be listening to all your feedback.

Height: Does it matter?
The last subject I’d like to tackle is the height guide for specials. In the past I have stated that characters should be under 6’ 5” to be a regular and those above are likely to be specials. Now this is a general rule but is by no means binding. Of course, the character’s bulk and additions to costume play a large role in the decision process. If a character existed that was 7’ but had the bulk of Flatman, he could be a regular.

While 6’ 5” generally works, we do need to make the decision on a case-by-case basis, looking at height, bulk, costume details, accessories and pose.

The debate seems to have been opened up again with talk of a Sauron figure. Personally, I think it would just be possible to get the character in the regular running order BUT it would require cheating the scale a little, we simply couldn’t have him standing tall at 7’ and not having a very dynamic pose. We wouldn’t be able to have a lot of wingspan on display. If we did the character as a special, we could have him at full height and with his wings open.

Which would you guys prefer? (Neither is definite at the moment).

Right that leaves me with just a sneak peek to post: check out Ares.

Enjoy!

To be honest Robert it didn't show much live footage. All the sets they showed were just production sketches, a quick glimpse of the orchestra recording the soundtrack, Jim Lee and the show director hyping it up.
Jim Lee said he had worked on designing Batman video games and sneakers??.. it was early, i may have misheard the sneakers part .

LAWay said...

Yeh, theme packs should be alternate costumes and resculpts. No room for new characters, thats what the line-up is for.

It would be a nightmare with numbering if they are just normal characters and would be no reason for it. I cant see many people wanting to pay a hefty sum for a not very special theme pack that may have some unpopular, unrecognised characters. Make them truly special with original x-men/avengers/thunderbolts etc

Also, heard about Batman live. Aint out til next year though is it? I may see it when they release some more news and pics.

Robert said...

Having googled the programme, Ted, I don't think Jim Lee said, "I have spent time designing Batman video games, the Batman show and creating Batman sneakers." It sounded more like, "I have spent time designing Batman video games, the Batman show and staring at streakers." I had heard the rumours but I'm surprised he admitted this on camera. Oh well, each to their own, I guess.

Oh, I would also prefer themed sets to go 'classic'. Original X-Men, for instance. Or an Iron Man set (pretty much every other Marvel figure, statue, etc. collection has done so, so it must sell).

I have been bombarded with adverts for live Batman at Liverpool. If I was to go to a live action Batman show I would want Adam West though, which is unlikely

Robert said...

Aw, beans and sausages! I was SURE we'd get an update today! Blast and damn!

Ah, the great Adam West, CGJ. And Robin: "Holy One-track Batcomputer Mind, Batman!" Or, my other favourite, "Holy Priceles Collection of Etruscan Snoods!" (Yes, I really do remember these!) Why the three seasons have never been released on DVD is a mystery. Especially when you consider some of the unwatchable rubbish that is out there.

Die antwoord is Deadpool it all makes sense now

Robert said...

Ted, that was disturbing on many levels!

On the subject of shurikens (which feature in the video), did you know that you can buy ninja star coat hooks? You can buy a few, screw them onto the wall in no particular pattern and then claim you survived an assassination attempt by the Hand!

Robert when you started playing your Neil Diamond records i bet your parents thought you were lost to satan :)
My nephew is at uni in Glasgow and he has been insanely excited about going to see Die Antwoord this very night,
Plus there can be no doubt this is Deadpool :)
No update , ah well time for some antwoord

Robert said...

Very clever, Ted! Yes, I saw that the word "damned" can be made from Neil Diamond (with some letters left over). You sneaky muck-monster, you!

Is this 30 yrs too late for us Robert?

Robert said...

Nah, Ted, it's never too late! If sixty is the new forty, well, by a process of simple reverse arithmetic then forty must be the new twenty! Yah, I'm a twenty-something again! And youth practically demands silly nonsense like that!

Seriously, no update AGAIN???
It's one thing for the main site not being updated in a very long time (Might as well show the figures up to issue 145 now) but for Rich not giving us another update after nearly a month?
I know you're busy guys but please spare some time for us too won't you? Feels like we're being left out :(

Comic Shop Day report.

Picked up Snowbird today. The face isn't nearly as bad as the images I'd previously seen, so grateful for that. However, I have to agree with what John Byrne has said on his website about the character being a generic female and not the mousey, almost boyish type she was originally. (He also said the figure's "crap", which is maybe over-stating things a little.) I own the comicbooks from Byrne's run and it's his original version of Snowbird that I see in my mind's eye. If you look at the image at the bottom of page 12, where Snowbird reveals her identity to Doug, that's the way I see her. The figurine gives her a build like Ms Marvel. Maybe she has 'filled out' in the years since I last bought Alpha Flight? Certainly, from the cover to Astonishing Tales: Snowbird #1 that seems to be the case. Oh well. Looking to forward to getting Wasp next time!

P.S. Having just read Avengers volume 3, and thoroughly enjoyed it, I am now more convinced than ever that Bendis needs to be removed from the current Avengers titles. Can we have Geoff Johns back? Or Kurt Busiek? Hey, what about Sterno, his just-finished Cap limited series was fun!

Hi Robert,
I've just seen on the CBR web-site a review for a new book that might take your fancy- 'The Art of Jim Starlin' (I think it was called that...). Anyway, it's about 300 pages thick or something, and goes into loads of detail about Warlock, Cap Marvel, Dreadstar etc...you probably already know about it, but I thought I'd give you the heads-up if you didn't...

BD

Ps...Have you had 'Cap America: Patriot' issue 3 yet? According to the Marvel Website it came out 2 weeks ago, but my LCS says it hasn't arrived yet...hmmmmm

PPs. Highly recommended- 'The Avengers: Children's Crusade'. The best Avengers title at the moment IMO. Beautiful art and stunning story...with a classic 'old school' feel. Comes out once in a blue moon however, so I'd wait for the trade at this point if I was you. :)

Robert said...

Hi, Bob. Seems like ages since I talked to you.

Surprised that you didn't get CA:P last week, as I did. Tell them to get their finger out! I know you can probably get one off eBay, but any problems let me know and I'll get one out of FP here and send it to you.

Yeh, I know about the Starlin book but I appreciate the heads-up. I'll definitely get it, although it may have to wait as I spent £10 on the Meltdown Man TP and £88 on Masterworks last night and then spent £40 in the comic shop today! I need a cheaper hobby! Maybe leaf collecting? Streaking? (Oh no, hang on, you get fined for that.)

As for the stash I bought today, it was very poor. The Avengers are boring me stupid at the moment. I don't understand the point of the Avengers and the Infinity Gauntlet LS, Secret Avengers moves at a snail's pace, New Avengers has too much magic mumbo-jumbo, Avengers: Prime has far too much yak-yak-yak, I Am An Avenger is just totally uninteresting (except for the lovely art on the Justice/ Firestar story), etc. Funnily enough, The Children's Crusade is the ONLY Avengers title I don't buy! Typical! And don't get me started on Hulk. Heroes Reborn aside, I can't remember such a monumental mess on any title in nearly forty years of collecting. Ah, I hate complaining about comicbooks. But I just finished volume 3 of the Assembler's title and it was miles better than what is being dished out now. And volume 3 is not nearly as good as the highlights of volume 1! I only hope that in 2011 things improve dramatically.

BobDiamond said...

Really appreciate the offer Robert, thanks for that...I'll give 'em another week or two to see if there's any developments...
Got to agree about The Avengers: The Infinity Gauntlet- what a pile of ****! I bought the first issue then cancelled. I think it's for the kiddie's market anyway, like 'Marvel Adventures' titles...
Must say however, that I'm loving the Secret Avengers now that it's got Shang-Chi and his dear ol' dad in it, plus a guest appearance from The Prince of Orphans. What a member he'd make!
NOT buying Avengers/ Pet Avengers team-up...and I'm assuming that's set in the 'kiddie-verse' too.

I know you have your reservations about this one, but 'The Thanos Imperative' came to a dramatic ending, and the whole series has been highly entertaining with great artwork.
One to look out for in a month or two is 'Cap America: Hail Hydra', looks awesome!

Robert said...

Up until a few years ago I bought all the galactic stuff. Now, I can't hardly recognise anyone and they have Disney characters as part of that world. Sad. I still reread Starlin's Warlock and Infinity series regularly. Classic stuff.

Maybe I am just out-of-sync with Marvel right now. I don't enjoy Fraction's work, or Bendis's, or Pak's, or van Lente's, etc. All the so-called 'hot' writers. I enjoy Lee (of course), Conway (on Spidey), Stern, David (esp. on Hulk), Waid, Busiek, Johns, Jurgens, Ennis, etc. Frankly, even Cap is just ticking along for me now. It gives me no pleasure to say that my comicbook highlights are now Masterworks or old 2000AD reprints. It's shocking to think that I don't look forward to a single regular title now and even the Limited Series are mostly unengaging. I don't remember that being the case before...

Roll on 2011 and the Cap and Thor films.

LAME QUIZ TIME ( BLAME RICH!!)
What makes Doc Ock unique in this collection??
Be warned there will be moaning and groaning at the lameness of the answer,
It has taken me 4hrs to make the "S" on Supermans chest, ennuf is enuff DRINK!!!!!!!!

LAWay said...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe what makes Doc Ock so unique is that he is the only Doc Ock figurine in the collection.

Robert said...

"Superman"?!!?? Oh, Ted, Ted, Ted. The shame.

Why is Doc Ock unique? Is the answer rude?

Returning to the subject of monthlies, what do you recommend, Ted?

Robert said...

Just watched the coverage from the Cenotaph in London. Very moving. And humbling.

For anyone interested, there's related documentaries on the Yesterday Channel this afternoon and evening.

Nice to know that heroes are not just to be found in the pages of comicbooks.

I am actually doing 2 mosaics at once ,A golden age Superman and Batman. Two of your all time favs i believe Robert :)
Recommended monthlies well you can't go wrong with Readers Wives and Knave.....oh.....you meant comics didn't you??
Why is Dock Ock unique?..Well he appeared at #3 in this collection and he made his first appearance in ASM #3 . He is the only character in the collection so far whose collection number matches their first comic appearance.
Yes, i know i have plumbed to new depths of naffness.
Here's an idea what characters could be announced to match their first comic appearances??
Frinstance Brother Voodoo- Strange Tales #169.
Yep, I'll just keep on flogging that dead horse :)

Well said Robert, My dad was a veteran of the North African campaign in WW2, Being a young mouthy idiot of a teenager i didn't fully comprehend the things he'd seen and gone through, I would tend to roll my eyes and think not another war story.
I will regret all my days not getting a chance to tell him how proud i was of him

Robert said...

Ted, the first time I read your post I couldn't write anything because it upset me so much. I had to go and do something else first. I'm sure your dad knew you were proud, though, and there is always time for you can tell your children all about their grandpa and what a hero he was.

My dad didn't see combat (thankfully) and did his National Service in England in the late 1950s. As I write this, he is at at our local Cenotaph for the Remembrance Sunday service.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Ah, Robert auld pal yer a good man.
It was a very personal outburst which i hope didn't seem too misplaced appearing on this forum, I had just been out walking my lab and at the top of the park you get a view down to the war memorial and i stood and listened to the pipers and naturally my thoughts turned to my old dad..
I will be back to my usual inane/ rude/idiotic self tomorrow :)

Robert said...

Ted, it's probably good that we interrupt our silly little discussion and arguments with something important once in a while. What you wrote was the most moving thing I've read in a long time.

Today was about all the men and women who served, whether on land, sea or air, here, abroad, in wartime and in peacetime. Including your dad.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hey Robert if you check oot my blog titled "Daily Dredd" you will see my latest purchase . I don't buy art willy nilly each purchase has to be carefully considered ( that means okayed with the wife)
But honestly you couldn't have bought a garbage ps3 game for what i paid for this. It would have been wrong not to bid on it :)
Anywho one of the things that interested me about it was the fact it is the opening strip from a new storyline written by one Mark Millar dated 1991, This must be some of his earliest work. And it looks so damn cool into the bargain.
When Rich one day announces the last extension of this wondrous collection, The 2000AD collection campaign begins

Robert said...

That indeed looks smart, Ted. Especially liked the retro lettering! I would LOVE to see a 2000AD collection. Very unlikely, though.

As for Mr Millar, there was an interview in one of the broadsheets yesterday. Can't remember which one, maybe the Herald. He seems a really decent bloke. I was sorry to hear he divorced two years ago. He always seemed so happy with his wife and daughter.

By the way, did you realise you had 1750 views on your blogs?! And I bet some of them were NOT from people sending you photies of folk "expressing their feelings towards each other".

Will need to get round to taking some photographs of my loft and some of my comicbooks and related nonsense one day so that I can show you, Bob, SV, Thor8, Jacadoo, PA, Leigh and anyone else who may be interested. I figure you already know I'm completely nuts so what damage can it do...?

Posting a quick random comment now, and this one is mainly an update for Marvel vs Capcom 3.
A new character for the Marvel side has just been revealed along with one for the Capcom side. For Marvel, we have She-Hulk and for Capcom, we have Zero from the Megaman X series.
I am definately getting more and more excited for this, 2011 is going to be a good year!

After all the talk of the Young Avengers in the past few months, i decided to see what all the fuss was about. So i managed to find a really good deal on their first run (with annual) and just got around to reading it (i've had it for a month). I gotta say, not bad, not bad at all. Oddly enough my favorite two characters remain Hawkeye II and Patriot but now i have more reasons to base it on than purely visual. While the YA are still not my top wanted characters they are firmly on my radar now. (I should mention i did know about them prior but only as guest stars in various books)

What highly talked about series to move onto next...hmmm maybe the Infinity Watch or Annihaltion..... Any Recommendations???

Robert said...

Bullseye, if you are thinking about reading the Infinity Watch then you should start off by reading the Thanos Quest and then the Infinity Gauntlet. Both are excellent and, much as I enjoy the quirkiness of the Infinity Watch, these two limited series are much better.

And, if you want Masterwork recommendations, then you might want to consider the 2nd volume of Warlock (which predates the Infinity stuff by 15 years) and the Jungle Action Black Panther editions, assuming you haven't read them. These books contain some of the greatest Marvel comicbooks ever.

SinisterVenom said...

Another Marvel vs Capcom update and this has also given me another idea for a fig.
Both of these characters are downloadable content (booo) but for Capcom, Jill Valentine and for Marvel, a character who we don't have as a fgurine yet: Shuma Gorath.
A new special maybe?

I kid I kid. Seriously...nice costume. :D

Thanks for the update SV on Marvel Vs Capcom 3. I have been lucky enough to play it at the london comic expo. It was awesome. I was skeptical on the graphics style, but its superb. Deadpool is a great new character, Iron Man is like a comfortable slipper if you played the previous, and I got to sample Thor...who just didnt do anything for me.

Dont care for Shuma Gorath, or Jill Valentine, wont be extras I'll be purchasing. But She-Hulk inclusion is awesome. Have you seen the collector's edition for the game? I reckon I'll be picking that up. Cant wait. :)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Even a crusty old geezer like moi is looking forward to MvC3, I like the way Capcom use oddball characters from the Marvel universe.
My only knowledge of both Omega Red and Shuma Gorath is through playing MvC2 on my old Dreamcast,
Here's a little tip for any parents out there when you buy little jimmy a game for his bithday next year, buy Marvel vs Capcom 3, You will instantly become the greatest parent in the world.
However if you buy some crap movie tie in such as Thor , Iron Man 2, etc, etc, They will know that deep down inside you hate them

SinisterVenom said...

I agree Ted, the only good Marvel tie-in game I've played was Spider-Man 2, the rest are just let downs.
Leigh, if the collector's edition is coming to the UK then I will definately buy it. So far I've only heard it's coming out in the U.S. on February 15 :(
I must also state how much I envy you for playing it already lol. It's too bad we have to wait til after Christmas for the real thing otherwise this would have made the best present ever!
And is Thor really that bad? He's one I'm looking forward to using, along wth Deadpool, Dr. Doom, Magneto and Super-Skrull (and the rest lol).

Hawkeye said...

Seriously when is the main site going to be updated? They've managed to put Omega Red as a forthcoming special, but we need to see the forthcoming (and current!) regulars too!

NB - the DC one is just as bad....

As for video games I like Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 but am I in teh minority here?

SinisterVenom said...

You're not alone Hawkeye. I love both games, played through the second game a few times to get the trophies (or achievements if you have it on the xbox 360, so far I have 78% of trophies), even purchased some playable characters like Juggernaut, Magneto, Carnage, Cable, Psylocke and Black Panther.
Did you ever play the X-Men Legends games? They have pretty much the same style of gameplay and great storylines.
SV

Robert said...

Um, Leigh, didn't quite understand why you repeated what I wrote...

Anyway, if the Black Widow costume is for my better half, then I want one of those 1960-era replica Batmobiles they are making to order in Indiana. At a mere £120,000, it's a snip.

I also want to see the main site updated. If they went to the bother of adding Omega Red, why not update the regular figure list, too? While we're on the subject, I never understood why the regular photos list only showed five figures at a time anyway (I think it was once a bit further ahead) and would have thought it was good to have all the advance sneak-peaks end up there. Maybe the forum has a complete visual list, I don't know, but that involves joining and not everyone will make that effort. I'm not having a go at the guys at Eaglemoss, for all we know they are run off their feet and may even have had redundancies, increasing workloads. It just seems a bit of a wasted opportunity, that's all.

Just a bad joke that didnt come across all that well Robert, but dont worry, i'll chat with santa and see what i can do for you.

As for games, i loved xmen legends, marvel ultimate alliance, and dc justice league if you get a chance, its exactly the same as the marvel games but with DC characters and has some nice cut scenes. I never bought any of the extra characters though, think its disgusting when they do that.

yeh, Thor was disappointing, but it could just be that I was rubbish with him. Its quite hard playing the game with that analogue stick, not like the arcades at all. Wish I had more time on the game, but I got pwned with Thor and was lucky I had good ol shellhead. Didnt really read the moveslist. Like a real gamer pro I just tried freestyling it all. So that explains poor thor form.
