Eaglemoss Investigates

Hey guys,

Another Friday and another update.

I love all the comments about new vs old vs 'classic' vs z-listers. In essence it is a similar conversation to the one we have in the office when we choose figures for each extension. I think the key is balance and to quote one of you guys our mission statement should pretty much be:

1. Coverage of famous characters
2. Less known characters based on awe-inspiring concepts and design
3. Completion of top/famous teams
4. Expansions into new emerging teams and Marvel realities
5. Coverage of unmissable, classic characters that are testament to the House Of The Idea.

I couldn't put it better myself. I think the one thing everyone should take away from the lists and polls, here and on the forum, is that at this stage in the collection everyone has a different idea of who NEEDS to be in. I try my best to be a little impartial and maintain a balance.

So without further to do here are this week's inclusions into the collection:

Lady Sif

Tigershark

On to a few questions:

Other limited run collections.
Someone asked about limited runs of figurines from different sources (similar to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer figures we made). I love this idea and have been talking to our bosses about some new spin-off/mini-collections but nothing has been decided. I've always stated my love for all things Street Fighter so would love to do some figures of the World Warriors. The major problem with these little collections is the high price we have to pay for licences. If we only do a small run of figures it means the cost of the licence is spread over less magazines. Not a huge problem to contend with but one that always needs addressing.

DC Blog
Not sure if we can set up a DC blog, apart from the time it takes to read/discuss all your comments and then write these articles, I'm not sure we've been given permission from DC to set one up.

Backdrops
Nice idea and one that was originally considered as part of the collection. One of the reasons it was dropped is that we were looking at the collection being presented as a diorama. When this changed and we went for more individual poses the backdrop idea went. It was also thought it might make the collection look a little young (as in for kids). I'll speak to the marketing chaps and see if it's something we want to look at. Maybe we could include with specials – so Ronan would come with an FF backdrop, Blob an X-Men related one etc... No promises though.

Just time for one sneak preview, this week we have early shots of Marvel Girl.

As you can see we went for the mini skirt costume (which was the most popular in our office and on the various forums). The hands to the head pose came straight from a comic and represents her using her powers. When painted we'll have the phoenix symbol over the eye. Oh and she's not quite facing the right way on the base, this will be corrected.

P.S. Read Mad Thinker's comments about us investigating multiple blog profiles and now love the idea of Dan and I running a detective agency similar to Madrox's in X-Factor. (Hence the title).

Ted,
There's a site dedicated to those ads- don't know what it's called, but it would be easy enough to Google.
My fav. isn't particularly funny, but it's the one where The Abomination AND the Windigo take on, and beat the shit out of The Hulk. Epic stuff, better than a lot of Annuals I've read....see what I did there...

The Ross Andru-drawn Spidey or John Romita Hulk, Ted.

Jeez i remember that ad, Hulk got the crap kicked outta him, Then Hulk, bribed them with cakes so they wouldn't beat on him no more. Bloody disturbing stuff.

Great minds think alike, Bob! That's the one I was talking about.

Had a look at the site, Bob. There were a couple of Captain America ads I don't recall - both by Sal! ("A Friendly Gesture" was particularly good.) Maybe they only appeared once or twice while others appeared more often, hence the clearer memory? I'll need to check one day.

When they eventually get round to reprinting all the 1970s comicbooks in Masterworks they'll probably not include these ads. Which is a shame. Yeh, they're cheesy and dated, but they're fun and some great artists did them. The 1970s gets a bad rep and I don't know why: Kung Fu, Columbo, the best of Led Zeppelin (LZIII and Physical Grafitti), classic comics like Starlin's Warlock, Jungle Action, Big John on FF and Thor, Romita-Andru-Buscema on Spidey, Kane on covers, etc. 'Nuff said.

Never knew there were so many, Never new how popular Cap Marvel was in " Twinkieland" . Only the god that was Gil Kane could make a cheesy one page ad seem like the greatest story ever told. Checkout the killer Bee and son advert.
Anyone for Nitro? He's not only for oldies, He did start the civil war saga.

John said...

Ted, I'd support a Nitro fig.

I'm a big fan of villains anyway, so it works out double for me.

An interesting fact about the HOSTESS ads...
A few years ago in the orig. Thunderbolts comic, Kurt Busiek decided to introduce a new team of The Masters of Evil. They were led by the new Crimson Cowl.
Many of this group were real D-listers, so KB started a competition to see if anyone could name the first appearance of all the members.
I think only one person got them all right, mainly because one character- called IceMaster, actually started in a Hostess ad! Not sure which one though...Human Torch perhaps?
Weird huh?

I like a bit chaos on the blog.

I used to work with Hel several years ago.
We share a common interest in Marvel, RPG, Japan etc and she was a friend to my wife too.

One on occassion when we were going away on business she picked me up at home and jokingly said to my wife "I've come to take your husband away" ... the Shi devil did not see the funny side.

On a more important note - there is only one of me here despite the wild suspicions.

Now then Moss Men - WHERE IS THIS WEEKS UPDATE?

Banshee said...

Cloak and Dagger released today :) :) Can't wait to get them in my grubby little paws.

Hope theres an update tommorow with a reveal of Shaman or Moonstone that would make my week :) :)

Must have misread your post, DP. I thought you were saying that you had another identity when you said "Robert is closest to guessing my identity". Frankly, this clears up nothing and I'm still completely confused!

Anywho, let's hope for two reveals. I'm hoping for a Herald, or failing that another cosmic. Or an Avenger like the Swordsman.

The painted Ronan looks very, very cool, There's also a C+D pic posted over on the forum, kinda hard to tell how good it is from the photo.
Should be on the main site by now, As people are actually picking them up from their newsagents?

Can't wait to get my grubby paws on Cloak and Dagger.
The painted Ronan looks amazing. Bit sad that he didn't have a cape but as we know capes have been an "issue" with figs.

Hopefully we get some good names today. Loving the extension so far.
Lets have some slight curveballs or some MK's and cosmics....

Deathbird
Brother Voodoo
White Tiger
Gamora
Star Lord
Paladin
Photon
Firelord
