Eaglemoss Investigates

Hey guys,

Another Friday and another update.

I love all the comments about new vs old vs 'classic' vs z-listers. In essence it is a similar conversation to the one we have in the office when we choose figures for each extension. I think the key is balance and to quote one of you guys our mission statement should pretty much be:

1. Coverage of famous characters
2. Less known characters based on awe-inspiring concepts and design
3. Completion of top/famous teams
4. Expansions into new emerging teams and Marvel realities
5. Coverage of unmissable, classic characters that are testament to the House Of The Idea.

I couldn't put it better myself. I think the one thing everyone should take away from the lists and polls, here and on the forum, is that at this stage in the collection everyone has a different idea of who NEEDS to be in. I try my best to be a little impartial and maintain a balance.

So without further to do here are this week's inclusions into the collection:

Lady Sif

Tigershark

On to a few questions:

Other limited run collections.
Someone asked about limited runs of figurines from different sources (similar to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer figures we made). I love this idea and have been talking to our bosses about some new spin-off/mini-collections but nothing has been decided. I've always stated my love for all things Street Fighter so would love to do some figures of the World Warriors. The major problem with these little collections is the high price we have to pay for licences. If we only do a small run of figures it means the cost of the licence is spread over less magazines. Not a huge problem to contend with but one that always needs addressing.

DC Blog
Not sure if we can set up a DC blog, apart from the time it takes to read/discuss all your comments and then write these articles, I'm not sure we've been given permission from DC to set one up.

Backdrops
Nice idea and one that was originally considered as part of the collection. One of the reasons it was dropped is that we were looking at the collection being presented as a diorama. When this changed and we went for more individual poses the backdrop idea went. It was also thought it might make the collection look a little young (as in for kids). I'll speak to the marketing chaps and see if it's something we want to look at. Maybe we could include with specials – so Ronan would come with an FF backdrop, Blob an X-Men related one etc... No promises though.

Just time for one sneak preview, this week we have early shots of Marvel Girl.

As you can see we went for the mini skirt costume (which was the most popular in our office and on the various forums). The hands to the head pose came straight from a comic and represents her using her powers. When painted we'll have the phoenix symbol over the eye. Oh and she's not quite facing the right way on the base, this will be corrected.

P.S. Read Mad Thinker's comments about us investigating multiple blog profiles and now love the idea of Dan and I running a detective agency similar to Madrox's in X-Factor. (Hence the title).

Hey One-of-three,

I did have a chat with Rich (on your behalf) about the very scarce possibility of even considering doing the Cuckoos in a 'future extension' or as a special (1 or 3 on a base), his initial reaction was "no". Then he softened a little bit and said "there are a lot more popular characters that are higher on the lists so far, but he didn't out right rule it out (maybe see how it would perform in a vote of some kind?).

If nothing else you've brought them to our attention (we previously hadn't considered them for the collection).

I like your sketch by the way!

Hey Dan The Man,

Thank you for talking to him on my behalf! I appreciate it a lot.

I was expecting a flat out no, since the Stepford Cuckoos aren't as popular as some other characters are. Bringing them to your attention and having him consider it makes me incredibly happy, especially since neither of you even considered them before. Just simply planting the idea into both of your minds makes me happy. You never know how much it'll grow in the future!

I'm also glad you liked the sketch, again it wasn't anything impressive as it was just something drawn up to convey the idea for a pose for all three sisters. I put faces on them and clothing since that would be more pleasant to look at than shapes and lines.

Anyway, I'll do my best to give you a reason to include The Stepford Cuckoos into the figurine collection sometime in the future in some way, shape or form. Even if they're not as well known, they absolutely deserve a spot in the collection!

Thank you again for your time, I appreciate it.

Just going to do a final result summing-up thing of the 'BD Lesser Known Super-Teams' Poll, as I think all the people who wanted to vote have done so...

Guardians of the Galaxy
No outstanding nominees, but Starhawk and Yondu got a couple of votes each.

Runaways
Nico Minoru/ Sister Grimm was the clear favourite with 4 votes

Young Avengers
Patriot well in front with 5 votes, but Kate Bishop, Wiccan and Hulkling all got 2 votes each.

Soviet Super Soldiers
Red Guardian wins with 4 votes, but close 2nd is Darkstar with 3 votes.

The Inititive
Lots of nominees, only Thor Girl and Trauma stood out with 2 votes each.

X-Force
Warpath is favourite with 5 votes, Domino 2nd with 3 votes.

X-Factor
Strong Guy well in the lead with 5 votes. 2nd with only 2 votes was Wolfsbane.

Invaders
Blazing Skull wins with 4 votes. Close behind is USAgent with 3.

Agents of Atlas
Namora wins with 4 votes, and The Uranian is a close 2nd with 3 votes.

Hope that was exciting for all of you! Maybe it will help in someway in EMs decision making...

Anyway, have fun!

Thursday. Which means we start wondering what sneak-peak we will get tomorrow.

I'll have a guess. At first I thought that maybe completing a team might happen and that led me to wonder if one of the Wrecking Crew was a possibility, as we have the Wrecker confirmed. But the Wrecker appears in solo tales and the others don't. Well, that I can recall. I'm not convinced they are seen as intersting or major enough to be included yet. That thinking, and the fact that we had an Avengers villains confirmed last week has led me to throw out that idea.

However, the idea of incomplete teams may be pointing in the right direction. We have two X-heroes already confirmed so it seems a reasonable suspicion that we might get an x-villain at some point. Not really qualified to speculate here but what about Avalanche? Anyone got any better ideas or suggestions of who we might get tomorrow...?

A wee while ago,A chap over on the forum was putting forward the idea of Eaglemoss releasing new sculpts of some of the Marvel " big hitters".
He reasoned quite rightly that at some point thier will come a dip in sales for this collection, And an obvious solution may be to produce some surefire sellers Wolvie in his iconic brown duds, Battle armour Thor maybe?
As well as spidey and Hulk and maybe Cap America. This would indeed be a small price to pay for the continuation of this very niche collection. I'm pretty sure if Drax and a new version of wolvie were released the wolvie sales would be astronomical in comparison to the little known Drax.
I aint advocating the DC collection route of knocking out dodgy superman and Batman figs every other month.
Is it something you chaps at EM are considering?
Oh and Robert tomorrows reveal will be a Blood Brothers double pack :)

Robert said...

Very similar ideas have been bouncing around on here for weeks, Ted, and I have to admit to being one of the folk banging that particular drum. It seems likely that eventually we'll see a point where Eaglemoss acknowledge that a variant figure will sell better than another increasingly obscure fringe character.

Blood Brothers, Ted? Ah, the Starlin-drawn ambush on Ben and (classic) Iron Man oot in the desert, them were the days!

Actually, after posting earlier I decided that I'd love to hear that a generic character was getting in. Hydra agent tops my list!

mighty_marvel said...

i'm for resculpts eventually. if it helps the collection last longer then it can only be a good thing. hopefully if they do happen EM will start with resculpts of the poorer figs - mystique, rogue and beast spring to mind. but would like to point out that there is still an iconic big hitter not yet done in JJJ. this mistake must be rectified.

as for the reveal i'm expecting EM's last choices to include an avenger, x-villain, cosmic, marvel knight (likely a villain) and (hopefully) a new team start.

Robert said...

A Hydra agent qualifies as a Marvel Knights villain through Nick Fury!!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I always hoped for a cannon fodder double pack. One hydra and one AIM goon . Buy as many as you like. Build a squad, Or an entire army. It would be great but ( pardon my big butt? ) There would be nothing but bitching and moaning about " worthier" characters deserving of a place , blah! blah!
A squad of AIM agents around a M.O.D.O.K special would have been off the coolometer.

BobDiamond said...

There's a lot of debate at the moment about the possibilities of redo's or alternative versions being made.
If new versions of existing figures are planned as a way of boosting sales from the 'Casual Buyer' (rather than the rabid fan), then logically EM will pick from the 'Premier league' of heroes. This in my opinion, is a very small handful, consisting of the following:
Spiderman
Captain America
Hulk
Iron Man
Thor
Wolverine

So...this has sparked my new idea for a game!
For each of these Marvel Icons you must state your fav. alternative costume/ design. This could be from a particular story-line, a What If? version, Future version etc.etc.
My choices would be...
Spiderman: Spiderman 2099
Captain America: Golden Age Cap w. Orig. shield
Hulk: 'Mr. Fixit'
Iron Man: Hulk-Buster armour (WWHulk)
Thor: New armour design
Wolverine: X-Force costume

Remember, it's a bit of fun..(But it could happen!)

As I have pointed out numerous times :) We have yet to have a cosmic confirmed and we are still light on the MK's and XMen villains.

The ideal solution would be to confirm DEATHBIRD.
She is a longstanding X-villain since the 70's and has a very rounded and detailed history. I love her look aswell, the feather, the purple and blues and the headdress.
Deathbird though is just as much a cosmic character as she is x-villain. She has usurped Lilandra numerous times as Empress of the Sh'iar and she has recently enjoyed a major part in the cosmic events like Rise and Fall of the Sh'iar Empire and War of the Kings.
Confirming her can help tick two boxes and keep the fans of older characters happy whilst pleasing the people who enjoy modern comics too.

Plus she is crazier than a box of Britneys....whats not to love.

John said...

Not being a giant X-Men fan, but being a huge cosmic fan, I'd support Deathbird. Heck, I'f even support the announcement of Vulcan. War of Kings was excellent!

I still say Gamora, Phyla-Vell, Rocket or Starlord would be better (for me, LOL.)

I'm liking the idea more and more of The Uranian making the collection. Marvel Boy in his current Agents of Atlas look. I'm making him my new #1 want. Still, this extension I got my top two requests in Wizard and Sasquatch. My top Two! I'll be happy with whatever for the rest of the extension. And thank you EM! :)

Robert said...

Maybe Rich will give us his thoughts on the possibility of a generic character (or two) today?

Folk like the Hydra agent, AIM technician, Kree soldier, Guardsman, etc.

I think this would be a definite winner. As Ted says, many of us would buy multiples of generic characters.

Ka-ching, Eaglemoss!

One-of-Three said...

What would they do for magazines though?

X-VILLAINS!!!!!!!!

Bagman said...

VANCE ASTRO for the Friday reveal, maybe holding a certain shield....

Bagman said...

Definetly like the idea of AIM,Hydra,Kree,Badoon,etc.....

Gremlin said...

The magazine of the generic unit could detail the organisation they are from, Hydra, SHIELD, AIM, Kree.

I would love a Brood figure aswell. Another cosmic X-villain who also has big links with others like Ms Marvel. I would rather have a drone rather than the queen so that I can buy 3 or 4 and have a little hive of them.

Generic figures are untapped goldmines. I wonder how many people bought a few figures of Multiple Man....I know I bought three myself.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Exactly Gremlin, As you and Robert mentioned this could be a nice little earner for EM. I would probably build a 4 man squad of each Aim, Hydra, Brood, Shield agents, Guardsman etc. Heck, are Sons of the Serpent still going?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hmmm generic Shield agents ?? All i can say in my defence is D'OH!!!

here's a game for you all to play :

i call this one - fanny or tranny ?

below is a list of some of the female characters that have been made so far + one's that we have seen sneak peaks of.
all you have to do is decide if you think they look like a babe or look like a bloke in drag by putting fanny or tranny next to their name.

i'll start you off but please feel free to list your own and tell us why you feel they are a tranny or a fanny ?

here goes :

she hulk - tranny , any woman with muscles like that has gotta be a bloke.

shadow cat - tranny , gotta be the worst looking face job eaglemoss have done.

emma frost - tranny , another bad face job.

black widow - fanny , love a red head.

crystal - can't decide , the whole figurine is just ugly and plain wrong.

viper - tranny , your not fooling me , all she/he needs is a gimp mask to go with that whip.

enchantress - fanny , top notch fanny , she's a babe.

marvel girl - tranny , the haircut is all wrong.

Glad the cuckoos are being shot down. Just seems like an idea to get schoolgirls into the collection and they seem like nobodies.

And Ted, I have been barking up that tree since I got to this blog. I aint saying produce a redo every week, but once a month, or once every quarter would be nice. There are too many amazing costumes we havents seen in the Marvel Universe, which is ironic that DC are getting them as they havent changed the character designs in generations.

I like your game MadThinker, I'll play and check out the figurines now:

Scrap that, i looked through them and they are all mingers with a few exceptions like Enchantress and Medusa. Just need a paperbag and all is forgotten.

One-of-Three said...

Ouch LAway, that was a jerk thing to say. Someone didn't read the post very well, since the Stepford Cuckoos aren't being shot down, it wasn't a "no." It was a more of a "not right now." It's also not like I ever wanted them in the collection right now, just sometime in the future--since there are more characters who deserve the spot right now.

You probably should have looked them up, since The Stepford Cuckoos aren't nobodies. If you read some of the X Men series you'd know who they are right off the bat. While they don't get as much spot light as characters like Dust (who unfortunately still doesn't have anywhere near enough back story or history in comparison, much like Rockslide), they are recognizable and are one of the more memorable X-students who play vital roles from time to time.

The Stepford Cuckoos also got five volume series which was more or less all about them.

You're free to think and express whatever you want, I just ask that you do so with a little more tact. I'm sure you didn't want to come off as rude. ;)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hmm... fanny, tranny and mingers. You dudes must be beating them off with a big stick , It's like listening to Warren Beatty and Hugh Hefner swap notes :)

Robert said...

I don't know what was funnier, Mad Thinker's wonderfully un-PC "Fanny or Tranny?" game or Ted's response to it. Hilarious stuff, guys. Haven't laughed out loud like that since MT's Eaglesmoss Investigations nonsense.

LAWay said...

Soz one-of-three, wasnt meant to be overly rude or offensive. I have never encountered the characters in any comic I have read, xmen or other, and a quick google search couldnt find much, and like Rich said, there are bigger and better characters.

Although, make figurines of any of the marvel girls in school outfits if they want, I wont really object.

navaho said...

Have come up with an excellant idea that will solve all our problems with figurines.........let me think it through first...........watch this space (especially you Rich)

Robert said...

Disappointed there was no update but I guess we had two sneak peaks last week and shouldn't complain.

So, while we await Navaho's miraculous idea, can I direct a question at Dan the Man, who may or may not be out there and reading our posts? Have generic characters ever been mentioned? If so, how likely are we to see any? I appreciate some - like a Guardsman - is probably way down the list. However, a SHIELD agent, or HYDRA agent, or AIM technician would be a welcome addition and, I believe, popular. Not to mention that many folk, like me, would probably buy more than one.

Unknown said...

as far as other lines go, I'd love to see a line of mythological creatures--greek, roman, norse, etc. biggest upside: no licensing fees!

One-of-Three said...

Hey LAway,

I had a feeling it wasn't your intention to come off as rude, so it's alright. =)

Also, I don't think you google them correctly, since a lot of stuff actually comes up when you put in "Stepford Cuckoos" into google. lol You get a bunch of things from images to their wikipedia as well as their page on Marvel's website.

They first showed up in Grant Morrison's run of New X-Men and from there the characters show up in a lot of different places in the X-Universe (616). They're currently in Uncanny X-Men.

I'm almost there guys.....hold onto your horses.....this idea will blow your collective minds! I feel a bit like Newton discovering gravity after the apple fell on his head or Archimedes shouting EUREKA! When he sat in his bath. This idea came into my head earlier today when I was visiting my local FP to collect my comics and noticed a clever marketing ploy they employed, then suddenly......BANG....my brain exploded with the answer to all our problems with the collection ( re-do's v 'obscure', multiple-packs, new subscribors, extentions, etc, everything!). Give me an hour or two, I promise it's worth the wait..

For the record, I really like the vast majority of figurines, females included. Only a couple I think should have been posed differently or... larger in areas, but none are at all Bad.

"Guardsman - is probably way down the list. However, a SHIELD agent, or HYDRA agent, or AIM technician.."

I've been reading Marvel a decent amount of time (14 years) and have no idea what a Guardsman is... Shield Hydra or Aim I would definitely get behind. My problem though, is I see a slot for a SHIELD agent and I think "why not Dugan?" I see HYDRA and think "why not Bob or Strucker?" Granted, Bob can't really fill a mag. and... I lost my train of thought. AIM Agent would be great.

navaho said...

Alright guys, sit down, relax and take a deep breath......now let me begin.

A great many issues have been discussed on this blog regarding
(1)possible re-do's of popular charcters as opposed to newer less well-known charaters.
(2)how to keep the collection going and how to keep it fresh and innovative.
(3)how to keep/gain subscribers and add new collectors genarally.

I want all things which will strenghthen the collection, keep it viable and continue into the 200's and I think I may have hit onto something very simple but something none of us has mentioned before.
Whilst in my local FP I noticed that the staff placed the most popular figurines with the lesser known ones, I asked the assistant why and she said that the passing public were drawn to the Spidey/Hulk/Wolverine figurines, etc but then would notice the others and would then be drawn into collecting all the figurines. She told me that most of her collectors started out this way and I suddenly had a thought.
Why don't Rich, Dan and the MossMen bring out double-packs with a primary character and a secondary character. The primary character would be a re-do of the most popular Marvel characters and the secondary character could be less well-known, maybe even 'obscure'. the magazine would only have to be about the secondary character as the primary character has already been done and the cost to the public would be cheaper!
Think about it.....Original Iron Man twinned with Whiplash, Brown/Yellow Wolverine twinned with Domino, Battlegear Thor twinned with Hela and A MegaDoubleSpecial...World War Hulk twinned with MODOK. It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
New collectors would be drawn into collection via the big characters and the existing collectors would be happy because we could vote on the re-do's! we can even have a little vote now on who the new re-do's and their twins could be.
Come on Rich, this will solve your double-pack problem because sales will go through the roof and it will be cheaper because only one magazine needs to be produced (if new collectors want the primary characters magazine they can buy them via the website, generating more revenue for you and introducing fresh blood into possibly new subscriptions). its a win/win situation.
Well guys, what do you think? Please give me some feedback because I love this idea and think if implemented could keep the collection going on for ages.
Rich and Dan, I would greatly appreciate some thoughts from you guys also.
Phew, right, off to bed now.

Robert said...

John, I can see where you are coming from about the Guardsman/ -men as, now that I think about it, I can't actually recall any recent appearances myself.

The original Guardsman armour was built by Tony Stark and first appeared in Iron Man #31, I think, which is around 1970. It was worn by Tony's then-best friend who Tony, as Iron Man, accidentally killed. It then was worn by the original wearer's brother. These were pretty important storylines at the time.

Afterwards, the 1980s and (early?) 1990s, the armour was worn by government guards at the Vault, the prison for super-powered criminals. In this role it popped up fairly regularly, not just in Iron Man but the Avengers, Spidey and some Venom mini-series. It was central to the famous episode of the first Armor Wars when Iron Man cowardly struck Steve Rogers (then known as the Captain) from behind. Cap was aiding a Guardsman when Shellhead zapped him.

The armour actually looks quite good. I can think of loads of characters I'd like to see before it, of course, but if this collection continues on for a good while then I think it's worth consideration. I obviously totally agree that HYDRA, AIM and SHIELD are far more deserving of inclusion.

By the way, I'd love a Dugan and a Strucker figure. Hell, let's have Quartermain, Sitwell, de Fontaine, the whole crew! As they used to say, Don't Yield! Back SHIELD!

LAWay said...

@Navaho
your idea is good but nothing that hasnt really been suggesting before. The problem moreso is that the moss men will unlikely make the 2 pack cheaper. Also, its alot of money for a new buyer to lay down. A £5.99 price tag may tempt them, a £13.99 price tag like the cloak and dagger may scare the hell out of them.

Like you said, the popular characters draw customers in. Whats the point in double packs when you can just release redos at a cheaper price. Gets attention of the customers, who in turn will then look at the other figures in the collection, and at a cheaper price to get started.

2 packs would be cool, but also random. It would be nice if they could make some sort of connection, but the randomness may scare people off. Like 'I really want a new spiderman, but I dont want the Centurion' or whatever.

Cool that you are thinking and had positive feedback about the whole popular character things.

Robert said...

Interesting idea, Navaho. No doubt for some collectors it's a strategy that would work. For me, pretty much ANY idea that makes the possibility of classic variants a reality is one that I would go along with, even though I don't particularly like the idea of maybe having to pay for a second figure I may not want.

One-of-Three said...

I like that idea, it would be a good way to introduce more obscure characters while assuring the sales by including remakes of beloved characters. Though, much like Robert expressed I too wouldn't want to have to buy a figure I didn't want to get one I did want.

Unless they're clever with how they package them by including two characters that relate to each other in some way. Like Storm and Winddancer, Wolverine and Armor, Emma Frost and The Cuckoos or Hellion, etc.

LAWay said...

This is bad business people. Newcomers wont pay extra for a character they have never heard of.

The FP staff said the A listers lure them in. You have to target these buyers with more A listers in new costumes. If the newcomers like, then they will buy more from the collection, even if they just want to buy the A-listers. You double pack an a-lister with a nobody, and the price tag scares the customer away thinking the collection is overpriced.

Gotta do these a-listers separate, and if some collectors dont like it then they are in the wrong collection. I aint saying make 10 spidermen in a row and flood the collection with redos, I mean an occassional redo, either bi-montly or once a quarter. 4 redos in a year isnt too much to ask if it means getting the extension to 200 is it?

Remember, the collections main focus isnt to meet the demands of making a figurines over EVERY marvel character, its about classic marvel characters, and the A-listers in different costumes are classic moments in marvel's history.

John said...

Before commenting, let me again say that I am AGAINST redos.

That said, if EM were going the route of remaking A-listers, instead of pairing them up that month with someone else in a 2-pack, release a character the same month with a connection. Iron Man and Whiplash the same month, but sold separately.

Still, the main way to get new subscribers/buyers is in the marketing. If I'd known about this from the start, I would have been all over it. I JUST found out last October or so... because my LCS says he can't trust the walk in crowd to randomly pick up a product that's so expensive. I just happened to stumble upon it. Flyers, inserts, ad space, posters in shops, interviews with websites like Newsarama, something that at least let's buyers know that this is available through Diamond; just ask your comic book guy to set you up. And always stay stocked up on the A-listers so when new buyers find out about it, they can get the well-knowns and go from there.

jimbob said...

EM can redo CABEL at least!

Just replace the small figurine with a larger version.

I think DC collection has already done it with Superman fig.

Comon who in the collection does like a small Cabel figure?

He should be sam size as Doc Samson figurine.

Robert said...

This will be a long one, guys. Sorry, but I had an idea worth sharing. Bare with me.

John has raised an interesting point about advertising. I saw the adverts on tv for the Spider-Man figure and have been buying from the start. Since then, nothing. If I had missed those adverts - and I seem to remember a member of my family had warned me to look out for them - it would have been down to me noticing them on the shelf in FP. I probably had a pretty good chance of that happening, but if there had been no FP near me then I would have been none the wiser. (To the best of my knowledge, none of the other comicbook shops in Glasgow stock the collection.)

So, in the spirit of Navaho but without the fanfare [ :) ], here's my idea to stimulate the collection and get me my prized variants.

Relaunch the collection.

Let me explain. Do a few classic figures, the A-listers that are most likely to be recognised, with an advertising campaign similar to the original launch. These would be variants of what we have already have: brown or classic "tiger" Wolvie, for instance. Do maybe three of these (possibly with a more dramatic pose) and then, having hopefully hooked a few folk, reintroduce the lesser known characters, basically continuing where the collection was interrupted. Even if the new collectors aren't keen on any less recognisable figures that follow the A-listers - say, Moondragon - they are now interested in the collection and can now go to numerous online stores, eBay, etc. to get the figures they want. Also, places like FP who physically stock the figures on their premises will get buyers coming in looking for them, too.

Of course, not alienating the present collectors is a concern. To avoid this the collection's numbering would remain unchanged and the figures would be entirely new in terms of costume and pose, so hopefully most of the diehard collectors wouldn't be put off. It would be a short-term strategy and if it didn't work out would not be maintained for long enough to damage the collection. I think it more likely that you'd get a new batch of collectors to add to the long-termers.

Of course, I am saying this with two questions in my head.

1. The cost of the adverising campaign. Eaglemoss have no guarantee that it would pay back in the long-term. Then again, what proof has anyone that it won't work?
2. Some collectors do not welcome variants. To them, I would point out that this may keep the collection going longer, which is what we all want regardless of our feelings about redos/ variants.

Anyway, apologies for the length. I'm off to get my tin hat. ;)

LAWay said...

Its been suggested before but I'll refresh it.

We talk about new series EM could produce, but its hard for them to warrant due to paying for a license and all that.

Why bother? There is so much more Marvel history in the A-listers alone.

So create a sister publication that gets a full marketing campaign that is just based on the top Marvel heroes and baddies in their different costumes throughout Marvel History. Call it the 'Marvel Icon Collection'.

All the whiners who wouldnt keep this collection going on a simple redo can either ignore it or collect it as its on entity as it wont interrupt the CMFC, and this way you get all new fans and curious customers in FP. You can advertise in the magazine 'if you like this, check out the CMFC' and you got them hooked.

No extra license pay (I think), less hassle, more sales, from which can be poured into keeping the CMFC going longer too.

Do you want to know where to send the royalty cheque or would you prefer a picture of me for my celebratory figurine? ;)

Robert said...

It's great you're thinking of ways to keep the collection going, LAWay, and that you are all for variants but I wish you'd not use words like "whiners" for people who disagree. Folks on here are entitled to their own opinion and have various reasons for not being able or wanting to pay for a second collection. Children, for instance. Let's be a little more understanding.

Please take this comment in the spirit it is intended.

LAWay said...

hehe it was a flippant comment Rob. I take just as much offense of said collectors who threaten to quit the collection due to the suggestion of redos and keeping the collection going.

I'm just passionate about Marvel and the idea.

The idea of the sister collection was that said collectors wouldnt need to buy 2 collections as they have repeatedly stated they have no interest in the A-listers and would drop the CMFC in a heartbeat. They werent commenting on their financial situation and neither was I - I wouldnt be rude to those who cant afford and turn down the idea of 2 collections, just those who are slightly narrow minded.

That being said, 2 collections would be a strain on any bank account, and I must admit, I feel guilty and hypercritical of saying so, but if EM did a sister publication that covered just the A-listers, I would unsubscribe to the CMFC and resort to buying just the specials and occasional character.

Robert said...

Fair enough, LAWay.

Just one thought: if a sister publicaton is going to have a lot of collectors, like yourself, jumping ship as it were, then Eaglemoss would be shooting themselves in the foot to do it. (Excuse the mixed metaphors.) It only becomes a good business idea if the vast majority of people buy both collections. Otherwise, you are dividing your audience whilst producing twice the product, a recipe for commercial suicide.

Despite the expense being a bit off-putting, I certainly would purchase both collections but I have no idea how representative I am.

LAWay said...

Yeh thats the thing Rob.
I believe many collectors here would stick to the CMFC.

Others will subscribe to both.

Others may subscribe to the new collection and quit the CMFC.

Others may subscribe to the new collection and unsubscribe, yet still purchase the CMFC.

Either way, EM is making money. I dont believe they will truly lose many customers of the CMFC as if they have been in it this long they are all happy. Me personally, I would prefer the A-listers than the C and D listers, but the CMFC would still get my money through other purchases.

What with the potential marketing, the better promotions in shops, the new collection can grow and gain its own audience. With free advertising in the new magazine, the CMFC can gain more buyers.

EM could trial 1 figurine a month for the new collection to save the wallets of all subscribers, that way I would probably keep both subscriptions as its not too demanding.

Robert said...

Problem is, this is all guesswork on our part about new collectors and who would buy what. We can't identify possible collectors unless we trial figures but maybe a poll on the forum would help establish how many current collectors would buy only one collection and hoa many would be willing to buy both...?

BobDiamond said...

Dreaming time again...
The following has been inspired by LAWays and Rob's recent discussions on the possibility of a 'sister publication' to TCMFC, 'The Marvel Icons Collection'.
Now, as I pointed out recently, Marvel basically has 6 truly Iconic Characters, and a series like this would probably have these guys on some kind of a rotation. I suggested a game to come up with some Iconic Variations, but basically got 'tumbleweed' back..so I'll suggest the following to spark a little interest (I'm not bitter..)

1. Golden Age Cap America
2. Spiderman 2099
3. Hulk-Buster Ironman (WW Hulk)
4. Mr. Fixit Hulk
5. Wolverine X-Force costume
6 'new' Thor

7. 'Bucky' Cap
8. 'Iron' Spiderman (Civil War)
9. 'classic' Ironman (70s/80s)
10. 'Planet Hulk' Hulk
11. Wolverine- brown costume
12. Battle-armour Thor w. Beard

13. Ultimate Cap
14. Ultimate Spidey
15. Ultimate Ironman
16. Ultimate Hulk
17. Ultimate Wolverine
18. Ultimate Thor

19. Steve Rogers- Secret Avengers
20. '6-armed' Spiderman (Classic story)
21. Orig. Golden-armour Ironman
22. Red Hulk
23. Wolverine 'Days of Future Past'
24. Lord Thor- King of Asgard

Now, I think that such a collection of 'Premier league players' could go up to 50 say, and maybe the odd A-lister could be added too ( Storm, Dr.Doom, Thing, Torch, Dr.Strange, DD, Silver Surfer, Punisher..)
It would be interesting if you guys added to this list, even if you're not into the whole 'redos/ alternatives' debate, 'cos, as I've said before, these 'flights of fancy' make fun and interesting discussion points.

Until next time,
BD

Robert said...

Great shout, Bob. Brilliant suggestions. Way more than I had thought of, to be honest. Hadn't even considered the Ultimate Universe, which is kind of selfish as the Ultimate universe has sold well and has a definite fanbase. "Conclusion: I would LOVE those figures!"

Damn my chickens with puffy feet, I've been thinking too small!

SinisterVenom said...

While I'm a bit late at posting this time (I really gotta get my internet up and running again soon lol!) I'm gonna make it short.
Tigershark and Lady Sif are great (and slightly obvious) choices and look forward to getting them. Marvel Girl is coming along nicely as well.
I would be interested in a Street Fighter collection but I have to admit the collection I would look forward to the most would be a Final Fantasy collection. With at least 13 original games as well as the sequels and spin-offs, there would be plenty of characters to make figures of, thus plenty of money making. The specials could be based on the summons or big enemies, any FF fan will know what I'm talking about.
Hoping to get my net sorted and come back full time again soon, until then keep it real guys!

BobDiamond said...

Glad you liked my suggestions Rob!
Now ('cos I'm all fired-up..)I will suggest a list of 'A-Lister Alternatives' for the hyperthetical 'Marvel Icons Collection'

1. Storm- the mohawk days!
2. 'Secret Wars' Dr.Doom
3. Battle-armour DareDevil ('Fall From Grace')
4. Orig. Golden-Age Human Torch
5. Green Goblin as Iron Patriot
6. 'blank-mask' Dr.Strange
7. 'Planet Hulk' Silver Surfer
8. 'Classic' Punisher
9. Extra-lumpy mutated Thing!(80s?)
10. Golden-Age Sub-Mariner

There you go.
Looking forward to some more ideas, guys and girls...(hint, hint..!)

Ok, new plan,

The NEED for some advertising aside...

If this is about getting NEW buyers who don't have any yet, then why start with Bucky Cap. or Iron Spidey? They don't have the regular figurines yet anyway.

Once a month, just rerelease one of those 6 A-listers. Or, release a 2-pack special. If a potential buyer walks into a shop and sees a Captain America and Iron Man 2-pack for $24, that's going to look like a pretty sweet deal. Ads inside show off the rest of the collection.

If its a rerelease of older figurines, you won't offend anyone who's against redo's. They just won't get it because they already have it. Pulls in new buyers. Extends collection. Win+win+win+money for EM.

John said...

An A-lister 2-pack would also be the perfect thing to advertise IN a comic book.

Seriously, we need to find a way to get people to KNOW about the series before looking at ways to "refresh" it. If there was a problem, I guarantee that's where it's stemming from.

Robert said...

Genius, John. Best idea yet.

BobDiamond said...

I thought the same as you John, when I was making that list of Iconic Alternatives.
That is, a new series would have to start with the so-called 'Classic' look for the 'Big 6' before doing alternative versions. I just didn't bother to mention it.
These would have to be resculpts of the ones from the original series (with prehaps more dynamic poses than those first few),as re-issuing the same ones would not attract the existing buyers.
The 2-pack idea could be used as the 'Special' gift element, in the same way 'Roof-top Spidey' was in the orig. collection.
BD

John said...

"These would have to be resculpts of the ones from the original series [...] as re-issuing the same ones would not attract the existing buyers."

Just the opposite. My idea is for the buyers that don't WANT doubles of the same ones. Resculpts takes us back to square one (for me, anyway.) New customers don't HAVE the first ones to begin with, so just make sure the A-listers are in stores and available.

"The 2-pack idea could be used as the 'Special' gift element, in the same way 'Roof-top Spidey' was in the orig. collection."

And it's the availability that makes this too hard. Special gifts are something for people that already know about it. I'm trying to think of ways to attract them WITH the 2-packs.

Oh, and Robert, I never thanked you for explaining the Guardsman suits. Thanks ;)

mighty_marvel said...

why are people getting so worried about the longevity of the collection. we've just had 2 extensions confirmed in quick succession. that suggests to me that the sales are pretty strong. and we're not even close to scraping the barrel with character choices yet. still plenty of strong contenders left. *cough cough* JJJ *cough cough*

i think when the time does come that sales drop off due to character choices we'll be comfortably past issue #200 and by then more people will be open to the idea of an occasional redo of an a-lister or disappointing fig in the regular line-up to keep sales strong and the collection going long enough that everyones major wants are immortalised in lead

Loving Bob's ideas about Battle Armour Thor, Mr. Fixit, original and classic Shellhead, etc. Much as I want to see guys like the Wizard and Puppet Master on my shelf, I'd explode with excitement if I had those babies too!

John, no thanks necessary. To be honest, after I had posted the explanation I thought, "No one cares, Robert! If he's interested he'll google it! Stop boring people with boring trips down boring memory lane!" Not sure if you've bothered to have a butcher's at an image of a Guardsman. Hopefully, you saw an image from the 1980s (possibly the Armor Wars storyline), when it was pretty streamlined. What did you think? (It's waaaay down the generic characters list, of course. I'm not suggesting inclusion this side of 250.)

Mighty Marvel, I wouldn't say we were worried, just thinking ahead! Moreover, if we attract more collectors it also means a possible increase in specials, etc.! Win win! I happen to agree with you that variants are more likely a couple of years down the line. (Although, since the Thor film out next year seems to have the Odinson wearing the same duds as the comic, maybe we could have a movie tie-in/ variant combination next summer? They had an Iron Man tie-in, after all.)

Robert said...

Bob, "D" for Diablo!

mighty_marvel said...

by most accounts the iron man movie variant tie in wasn't that popular. reckon we'll get an odin special to go with the thor movie. seem to remember rich saying that was why odin wasn't on the specials list for this year.

John, last time I'll go on about it, but there's a review of a Guardsman figure from an Iron Man toy figure line that's on Youtube and gives you a good look at the design, especially the helmet. The only difference I see is that the colouring of the armour is slightly darker than in the comics.

That probably didn't make any sense, but it's 1 a.m. and I just wanted to try and get Venus on there.

Hi Guys,
this is the first ever comment i've posted so i'm hoping i've done it correctly.
Just on the subject of what characters should be in the collection; I think and Hope that Frankie Raye (Nova) will make it into the collection, she's appeared in more way more than 20 comics and was a major player in some great storylines, 'The Herald Ordeal' to name one. First appearing as Frankie Raye in FF #164(Nov 1975) and then as Nova in #244.
She's a favourite character of mine and i think she would make an awsome model alongside Galactus and the other Heralds.
what's your thoughts guys?

it's just a game mad thinker. you use the last letter of the previous character to start to next character. no repeats allowed and you should ideally use people not yet in the collection.

think john is pushing the rules a little though with naming arcade backwards and using just an initial for vance astro but cba to change it.

The DC figurines are much better than the marvel ones for modding and they are slightly larger.

While I understand that adding redos would extend the life of the collection, what end would it serve? I'm certainly not going to buy three Wolverines and two Captain Americas. Yes, it gets new buyers, but if the collection doesn't continue to grow into new territory, what's the point of following it? I think the occasional redo wouldn't be a bad idea as we progress into the 200s, but I'm thinking the actual ratio should be small. 1:4 or something. Maybe they could do a quarterly re-do 'special' outside of the main numbering line. Call it the All-Star line or something. I really don't want the same character popping up numerous times in the main running order.

Time for me to head into the east to seek further enlightenment.

Before I go here's a little ditty a wrote for Gordon Brown before he was ejected from office: -

The Poltergeist of Downing Street

Number 10, the seat of power, will chill the blood and make you cower.
Venture inside at the witching hour, a ghastly howl then a pottery shower.
Shards of glass, the crack of bone, mind your head its a mobile phone!
Make sure youre never left alone, duck again as a printers thrown!
From every nook is hurled abuse, hands in the air but there is no truce!
A hurtling book, there's no excuse, hit square in the jaw, a tooth is loose!
"Calm down beast! This isnt fair!" Then dive for cover from a tumbling chair!
What to do? To hide, but where? When Gordons around, you'd better beware!

Good night and pleasant dreams everyone... (including blue furry fluff balls).

May the force be with you...... always.

Hi Deadpool!
A few things to share....

I tried to see the latest images of Shi, but this time they said there was some kind of error. maybe if someone else tries, we would know for sure...

The strange game we are 'all' playing to pass the time until the next up-date is fairly simple.
You think of a character you want in the collection (one that hasn't been done yet)and add it to the growing list from other bloggers, but the last letter from the previous character has to match the first letter of the following one...got it?
mighty marvel started this one off, and I have to warn you he is a very strict referee!

eg..He wont allow Captain underpants!!

I see .... the rules are quite simple ... fiendishly simple.

So simple that a simpleton would be out foxed by the sheer simpleness of the game.

Well let me see....

Darkchylde -> Echo -> Odin-> Nightshade -> Elfqueen -> Nemesis -> Silver Scorpion .... bugger ... another N ....> Norns -> Snert -> Trumpet nose -> Enormous Organ -> NOT ANOTHER BLOODY N ...AAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!

I bid theee goood niiight ...

BobDiamond said...

Rob,before they throw us off..
I've got this brilliant idea for a 'Mega Alternative Multipack'!(inspired by your Immortus suggestion)
Here goes...
The Pack contains Kang in all his various guises-

Kang
Immortus
Rama-Tut
Scarlet Centurion
Iron Lad
(any others???)

The set could be on a special spinning base, so when it spins fast they all blur into one!!

(Kind of kidding about that last bit...)

(...or was I ???)

Can you fly ....Bobby? Nice to see you are a fellow fan DP . That has to be my all time favourite episode of Bob the builder. It's the one where Lofty the crane is struck by lightening and goes all Killdozer on Bob's ass! Simmering tensions caused by Bobs hiring of eastern european heavy plant explode in an orgy of violence . Lofty hurls bobs broken body into an 800ft deep quarry.
Now that's what i call a season ending finale.

Robert said...

I've had natters with you about Captain Britain, Ted, so I guess I am you, too! :) I know you're only joshing, though. (Mind you, EVERYONE should go to Japan. Incredible place, culture and people.)

I know there's been accusations of whajamaflip being thingummybob and so on but I had not really paid much attention to it. Far as I could see, most of it was based on coincidence (and a complete lack of understanding of how 'chance' works) and overactive imaginations. I'm not sure how I get anything done because as well as "me", I've been accused of being anything up to three other identities, "Deadpool" being one of them. I wouldn't post under another identity for a variety of reasons (the main two being it seems too much bother and I don't see the point) but it doesn't matter what I say so I just let folk run about with their fanciful theories and, presumably, hats with ostrich feathers. Actually, if I was DP then that would mean I have that rather spiffing original Captain Britain sitting on my shelf!

P.S. Sorry, Bob. I'm having trouble keeping track of all my identities on here and just got a tad muddled. I guess you named the Recorder due to my sterling work in naming BD and SL...

BobDiamond said...

You betcha Rob!
BTW, I also am only me (badly put, I know- wine talking...). I wouldn't know how to double-post, unless it's as simple as er, double-posting...but I wouldn't anyway, because I wouldn't know it was so simple...get it? (sort of..)

Anyway, to prove I'm me, and no one else, I'm going to inflict on you all another infamous 'BD Top 10'!
Seriously guys, I'm running out of ideas here, so help me out!...

2. American Eagle
3. Nighthawk
4. Killer Shrike (he's actually rubbish..)
5. Le Pereguine (hmmmm...)
6. Starhawk
7. Lady Lark
8. Darkhawk (lot of bloody hawks, aren't there?)
9. Deathbird
10. Pheonix ! (it counts..)

BobDiamond said...

Rob,
I've had a word with Bobhawk, and while he is understandably mortified at leaving out The Vulture from the Top 10 list, he did specify that he will NOT accept Scarecrow (because he is not trying to be a 'bird' as such), or Hawkeye or The Angel (for the same reasons... He's a tough ol' Buzzard, is Bobhawk!). He will accept Thunderbird however, and says he wished he'd thought of it!

BD the-one-and-only

Ted,
Bobhawk says that technically Howard the Duck is not really a Bird-'Themed' character, but is actually a 'real' bird (sort-of)!

He also wishes he had thought of The Owl however...
