Man or Machine

Hello people, things have quietened down a little this week so I’m back for a longer update than the last one.

First up just want to say it’s great that this blog is generating so many comments and giving us a lot of feedback here at Eaglemoss. However, can I ask that everyone tries to keep a cool head and refrain from using any derogatory language. It’s hard to always get your point across on a blog or forum and some posts can be misinterpreted so let’s all remember to be civil and respect each others views.

Now enough from ‘old man’ Richard, time to answer some questions about the way we choose characters for the extensions.

Firstly I’ve noticed that a lot of discussion has been on X-Men characters (especially villains) and how many we have in the collection. Well first up, I promise you we’re not anti X-Villains here at Eaglemoss, in fact we're not really anti anything. Between the chaps who work on the Marvel project and some of our other mags we’ve got a large cross-section of comic readers.

Dan (Designer) is a big fan of Kirby characters and wants to diversify the collection as much as possible to include the horror elements.

Alan (previous editor) loves the Defenders, some of the old ‘50s monsters, and obscure Daredevil characters.

Gary (DC designer) is a big fan of the ‘70s characters.

And I personally grew-up on X-Men comics from the ‘80s and ‘90s.

When we do choose which characters go into an extension we spend a long time coming up with a list of potentials (the last one was 150 characters long) we then choose based on a number of criteria including:

Number of comics the character’s been in.
Importance to the rest of Marvel Universe.
How good the figure will look.
The comic fans' perceived importance of the character.
The Marvel ‘family’ they fit into.

And belief it or not, we always look at the balance of the collection, and try to make sure that we have a fair number of characters from the main Marvel families.

There might be a few groups that are slightly underrepresented but we always strive to fill any extension with characters that help complete sets (Inhumans, Alpha Flight, X-Men…) as well as starting new ones such as Thunderbolts, Eternals, Guardians Galaxy. We also want to have a solid mix of old characters and modern ones to keep everyone interested.

At the same time we’re keen to have the collection reflect the Marvel Universe, in diversity and make-up. What does this mean? Well one example is with female characters (which I think we’re all keen to get more in the collection). A quick look through the Marvel Encyclopedia (DK edition) shows that Marvel’s characters are predominantly male with only around 25% female. Looking in our collection we’ve got 31 females out of 140 which is about 22% so we’re not that behind Marvel. Obviously this is just an example and we don’t actually sit around all day using stats to choose characters but hopefully you can see the point I’m making.

All in all it’s a tough balancing act and I hope you can see we think hard about it and, more importantly, I hope you agree with me that we get it more right than wrong.

So the big question: who’ll make the next extension if/when we get one? Well you’ll all just have to wait and see. Last time we let you guys choose a lot of the characters and I’m happy to let you choose a few more but definitely not all of them.

Will there be more X-villains? Yes.

Will there be some new groups started? Yes.

Will I reveal anymore right now? No

And finally a figurine update: Machine Man.

I some times feel that some comments are quite repetitive and some themes go around in circles, but hey Ghost everyone is free to comment here and if it seems like the same small group of people have taken over this blog, it just may be dued to the fact that the others have just disapeared like "Ghosts" and don't send in thier posts!

GHOST
i agree about the pages of filler in recent mags personally i would like to see profiles and interviews of the great artists of the silver age kirby, kane ditko etc these are all very familiar names but i know very little about the men that produced these amazing charachters .
oops! nearly forgot the fab marie severin. an interview or profile on a silverage great and female to boot would be far more interesting than finding out my three year old comic is now worth a respectable $7.00

Hey, here is a question regarding the DC collection if you dont mind answering it.

On Superherofigurineforum we have just seen the sculpt for Cyborg superman and some of us are wondering why he is basically a variant to the superman figurine and nothing like the concept sketch which was shown to us a while back???

and why that the magazines for the DC figs seem to be 4 pages shorter than usual??

Can you shed some light on that.

Thanks for the update. I always look foward too them.

I lerk on here. I've only just realised that as a non-member of blogger I AM able to post. So I will do from now on.

I'm very much looking foward to Madrox.

BUT I'm SO excited for X-23!! My fave comic book character! All I ask is that she's NOT in the fang costume. PLEASE No! 99.9% of X-23 fans HATE that costume with a passion. The Black "Target X" one is great. We all love that. (Drawn by Mike Choi). Any chance of some previews any time soon?

Ghost: I have sometimes found that some of the comments expressed here are repetative, but everyone has the right to express what they think and feel as long as it's done correctly and with respect.

As for this blog being taken over by a couple of people, everyone is welcome to participate and jump in and join the fun. Could be that some people just disappear from this blog like "Ghosts" and don't show up for some time. Speaking of disappering, where is Grim Reaper?

As for changes in the magazines format, I for it if the changes are fot the better. Maybe the center spread can be replced with some other feature about the character. And the back cover could be given some better use also.

See what you did there Thor8? Now that's funny... (I hope the duplication was intentional!).

No major disrespect intended... just 200+ comments...and not much to say. Nice to have something intellegent and new to raise...

Which brings me on to: GRAVITY.

Hey folks - how about a Custom Marvel Display unit! Now that would be nice. Although I'm more worried about my floor than my shelves! None of the shop stuff is particulary fanastic (Teak or Oak is hardly the look I'm going for, and none seem to have enough shelves or are too deep, and the Glass to Lead ratio worries me!

Just a quick query. Issue #114 is set to be Viper. Does anyone know if this is Jordan Stryke, Madame Hydra or the one from the serpent squad?

Really hoping its Madame Hydra. Thanx.

Rich - when is your next quiet week????

Update to blog or even better the promised update to main site would be appreciated....

Or do we have to let Pirate Adam loose?

Now CBR remember this is only a joke......

Ha Ha Ha!!!;)

Hey Rich have you guys ever considered a email newsletter for fans? You could put it new pics of upcoming figs and news etc. It would be a good way for ALL fans to be kept up to date with new info on the collection :)

Thor8 said...

211 comments and over two weeks since your last post. Rick where are you? And where is the main site update we were promised?

Banshee said...

Boo. Really thought we'd have gotten an update this week. Please don't leave it too long guys.

Just a quick list to if I may.

Arachne
Domino
Nemesis

Madame Web for a special

Northstar/Aurora
Sasquatch/Puck double packs

I realise I'm probably just repeating myself but I'd love these guys in the collection.

Thanx :)

Banshee said...

Oh and one more thing. How will Puck be done if he is eventually entered into the collection. With him being only 3'6 and people like Thor being 6'6 does this mean he'll be half the size of regular figurines?

Baroni_08 said...

I dont think that they take size in to how a figurine is done that much Banshee m8, they will just do like they did with MOLE MAN a decent size and good figurine . Cos if size did come in to it loads would be way out of scale , Hope for an update soon pls ........ are we still on about BLOB and HOWARD THE DUCK lol..... were's PIRATE ADAM ????..

Thor8 said...

Ther 's a group whom I believe would make some really nice looking figurines although the majority of them don't have enough individual background to fill a mag. They are the original Zodiac. Aside from Taurus,Libra and Scorpio
I'm aware that the rest of the group doesn't have much of a history, but most of them would sure make some great looking figurines.

As for double pack; Klaw and Whirlwind

mighty_marvel said...

the vast majority of the regular figures are actually to roughly the same scale, somewhere around 1:20. there's only about 10 that are significantly off the average. puck should be somewhere between 5cm and 6cm high to look in place with the rest of the collection, which is what EM probably would do. as others have suggested i would put puck as a double with sasquatch to offset that he would be a smaller figure.

jimbob said...

I hope EM and Richard take note on your theory Mighty Marvel on fig scales.;)

Guys for those of you that maybe – just maybe are still in the dark, you should give a look at the amazing customs James aka acecustoms.blogspot.com has produced.

Simply talented and the best customiser I have seen to date – Grim have you seen yet?

The paint effects are superb and re-sculpts – need I say more?

I am probably a little behind everybody else in discovering James – but boy have I already started begging for the Micronaughts!!

Anyway Rich come on give us the much needed update – remember Pirate Adam is lurking….

Still making multiple accounts James?

Jacadoo said...

King Chris - I'm a bit worried - do you know something I do not?

My real name is Bill!!!

Chris have you seen James blog - I only make a point as there are a lot of collectors who have some obscure choices and he could ne a real option.

I have seen some of the customs on Grims site and I think James can offer more - now only my opinion and everybody has a choice - just giving my unbiased opinion, while we all still have freedom of speech.

Where have you been of late - we have not had a run in for a while?

GRRRR!!

Rich - don't blame me but you were warned..... LOL

Hopefully we might get a blog update tomorrow, I think Rich was out of the office last week?

I also wondered if Rich was aware of the poor marketing so far for the Watcher fig which is out now. Seem it only went on the website a couple of days ago, and no leaflets have been provided to newsies. All we had was a small sticker on Gladiator's packaging which is pretty easy to miss. Hopefully it'll still sell well anyway so poor marketing won't affect the chances of more larger specials in the future.

As for Jacadoo's comment on the customs scene, yes James' customs are very good, but I feel it's a bit unfair and untrue to say they're simply better than any on the SHFF. There are certainly a few customisers on there who I personally feel can definitely match him fig for fig in terms of quality and finishing (like the ones featured as part of the custom comp winner a couple of posts ago for example). I just think credit is due where credit's due to all the customisers in the community. And I agree with you that they're definitely a great way for people to get some more obscure choices commisioned.

That's my 2 cents on the matter, and I'll leave it at that as I don't feel Rich's blog is an appropriate place for people to perhaps try and start a flame war between the SHFF and other members or websites, and I only mention that because of your direct mention of Grim in your previous post.

King Chris the comment I made regarding "offer more" was as I stated only my opinion - no malace was intended, but to be fair I for one have not seen better and to try and help some of the other contributors to this blog, I only tried to direct them.

I don't think Rich would mind me communicating in the way I did - more just an extension of this community.

Grim is a big boy and I know he showcases customes, only I have never seen James creations on your site and wanted to bring to his / your attention and a wider audience.

What happened to the old Chis - normally it would be both barrells first??

Please don't tell me your now PC?

Anonymous said...

On topic:
I agree with Ted Sallis about perhaps adding more profiles about the guys at Marvel behind all our favourite creations, and some articles about key storylines etc, rather than just finding out that comics I don't own aren't worth much either.

I'd also like to echo Ninty's query about getting some light shed on as to why the DC collection has had it's magazine cut down by 4 pages and now printed on cheaper paper?

Off Topic:
Jacadoo, why are you so eager to get both barrels exactly? I'm sure I can get them if you really desire but it's probs best left done by private pm rather than just filling up this comments section with irrelevant flaming and baiting.

As for James' customs not appearing on the SHFF, that's between James and the SHFF admins.

Jacadoo said...

Oh Chris grow up - it was a light hearted comment thats all. I had hoped your ego had improved - silly me.

I dont know the situation with SHFF and James, not even sure worth asking.

I would have thought having somebody as talented as this guy would have enhanced any forum he decided to contribute to.

Please keep your veiled threats to yourself - you may make the mistake of thinking me one of your followers.

Anonymous said...

I'm sorry which veiled threats are these? I've actually tried to stay on topic as much as possible here and not stoop down to just arguing/name calling/hair pulling for the sake of it. As far as I'm aware everytime I post nowadays it seems you decide to pick something to criticise.

As for followers, why would I need any? so that I can say that my virtual gang is bigger than your virtual gang so give us all your lunch money?

LOL

Its not fair, an argument and im not part of it :(
to be fair i have seen James customs and they are very good, however i havn't seen any others yet except the comp winners so will reserve judgement for now.

hope we get an update today, if Rich gets of his overworked, lazy bottom. (only jokin about the lazy part)
