'Twas the update before Christmas...

Hello everybody,

Just time for one quick update before the Christmas/New Year break.

I have some images of new figures:

First, Spiral Painted:

Second, Songbird painted:

This is now our third 'shouty' character and we wanted to create a different pose to Banshee and Siryn. We decided to go with Songbird just about to bellow – a more subtle use of her powers.

SPECIAL TIME

I can also (re)confirm which specials we're currently working on for next year. I don't have any pictures yet but I can let you know that Odin and Sauron are currently at the sculptors. Not sure the order or onsale date yet but they will be making an appearance in 2011 alongside some others.

After a lot of debate on the Sauron figure, we decided that we just couldn't get him in the collection as a regular issue unless we greatly cheated the scale and wing-size. Hopefully everyone will be happy to know that I'm working with the sculptors to make sure the wings are not sticking out too much (ie the pose isn't too crazy) and that he's a normal special.

Just time to quickly answer one question:

Q. How involved are Marvel in the sculpting process?

A. When choosing characters for extensions we internally finalise the running order and then send to Marvel for confirmation. This allows Marvel to check the characters are not 3rd party characters and that no licensing problems exist. It also gives them the chance to suggest characters that may be about to be relaunched or feature in an upcoming storyline – although this latter point has never actually occured.

In general, Marvel let us include any character we want.

Moving on to individual characters, the next stage Marvel will see are concepts for the figurine's pose and costume. To get these concepts ready, I spend time making a list of all the character's appearances, buying most (if not all) the comics we don't have and then looking through each one for pose images and overall reference. I also use a number of websites for reference.

Often a pose can be found in the comics but if not we can have approved Marvel artists produce sketches for us.

Marvel then check the pose and costume and pass any comments back to us – this can be a change in pose or costume.

From this point all the approved reference goes to our sculptor who begins work. The sculptor will then send work-in-progress pictures to myself, these are also approved by Marvel to make sure we're keeping to the reference and everyone is satisfied with the sculpt.

Once finished, a cast of the sculpt is sent to Marvel for final sculpt approval before the sculpt is painted. First images and then a physical paint sample are supplied to Marvel. At each stage Marvel can ask for changes and often tweak poses/colours.

And lastly, pre-production and production samples are sent to Marvel for comments.

All-in-all Marvel get to see every stage of development and can supply comments/make changes at any point. The number of changes/comments varies from figure to figure.

Right I think that's enough for now.

Everyone have a great Christmas and Happy New Year.

Rich

Thanks for the update Rich! We know how busy you must be and it's really appreciated.
Spiral looks absolutely fab! Really cannot wait for her. I like the idea you went for Songbird but I feel looking at her from this angle didn't do her much justice. I'm sure when I have her in front of me I'll think differently. I do like the costume choice though.
Also can't wait for 2011 with such great figures coming. Odin is a must and I'm really happy about Sauron being a special, that was what I preferred.
Well if I don't pop on again beforehand (but hopefully I will), Merry Christmas to everyone and I'll definately be on before the new year to wish you all well :)

Very cool to know how much of an input Marvel actually have and to see how involved with each figure they are!

Spiral is looking phenomenal! Easily one of the best figurines in the collection so far :) Songbird is looking good too, a great pose for the character!

Sauron & Odin are both very deserving specials so looking forward to both of them next year :D

Nice birthday surprise, Rich! You missed your chance to announce a change in the line-up, dumping someone to make room for the Recorder! Hey, there's still time to do that!

Thanks, SV and Ted. I'm in Silver Age Heaven! Best quote so far? Hulk's take on DIY! "Hulk does not see DOOR to city! Maybe they try to keep Hulk OUT! BAH! Hulk doesn't NEED Door! Hulk will MAKE Door!" BLATOOMB! (From Hulk Annual #6, p.36 [1977].)

WOW Spiral is cool and Songbird looks awesome as well.

Sauron is a very good choice of special. I am keeping my fingers crossed we will see Warpath one day as well.

Still hope we see Aurora & Northstar in 2011 as a double pack. If not them then I think Corsir & Hepzibah would be cool.

SPIRAL is ace and so is the news of SAURON.

I agree with avenger_guy we now meed MOJO to go with SPIRAL.

LONGSHOT is a big omission as is WARPATH.

Two excellent additions there, especially love the Spiral figure. Agree with you Ted, she certainly has a 'Golden Voyage Of Sinbad' vibe about her. My fav film when I was a nipper!
Songbird is very cool, but she looks slightly incomplete without the pink sonic wing effect... but at least they've got her hair right.

Before I go - a big 'Happy Birthday!' to Robert!!

Thanks for the update.

Odin and Sauron are great news.

Spiral looks amazing painted.

Mix feelings about Songbird stance, she does look have complete!
It's like she should have wings.

Standing stance would have been better with no pink wings!!!!!!!

spiral looks very good, how much of her will be resin ?

Hi, guys! Been a great day. (Although if I were you, I'd read some reviews of "Tron: Legacy" before deciding whether you should go and see it.)

Next year will be cool, especially if you are a wannabe Asgardian: a Thor film, Odin Special, Balder.

Anyway, Happy Christmas to everyone at Eaglemoss and every collector of the CMFC.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Great previews. Spiral looks awesome, very nice.

Songbird looks good, but also doesn't at the same time. It's like she has two different poses in the body and legs, then just glued them together. SHe just looks like she would be unbalanced slightly or something. Its minor, and I would still be happy with her, maybe not crouching as much, but the details are fantastic.

The Marvel approval process sounds so interesting, I really wish we could get some sort of picture examples of what Marvel may see. It sounds like a lot of feedback and back and forth is involved, which I think would be really interesting, if not as a book, at least as a blog post. :)

Happy holidays folks.

Spiral is outstanding....a real work of art. I campaigned to have her in the collection for a long time so I am so happy to see such a fantastic and dynamic sculpt.

Pleased to see Sauron in too. A giant Pteradactyl-man on my shelf is going to look awesome.

I am really pleased with Songbird's sculpt too. Considering the character design has little in the way of capes/showable powers you have managed to do a nice sculpt with her. Another figure I cannot wait to get on my shelf.

All in all a great update and next year is looking really positive in terms of specials and regulars.

Keep up the great work and have a merry XMas and New Year.

Banshee said...

Spiral looks incredible. One of the best sculpts by far. Songbird is looking pretty nifty too.

Glad to here Sauron will be getting the lead treatment next year. But what I really want to know Rich is if we'll ever get a solid confirmation of Northstar/Aurora double-pack. Please let us know in your next update the tension is killing me :p

avenger guy said...

Can someone help me how should i display my figures in groups,in order or in first appernce

Robert said...

Hi, Avenger Guy! Everyone's got their own way of organising their figures. I'm not sure how long you've been collecting them, but the first figure came with a fold-out poster that showed that the original line-up of 60 was envisaged as being five 'families': Spider-Man, FF, Avengers, X-Men and Marvel Knights. That's how I started displaying them. Over time the distinctions have blurred a bit. You also have characters like Wolverine who can be displayed with the X-Men or Avengers. Same with Hulk as an Avenger or Defender. It's up to you!

Also, how you display comes into play. I place my figures along the edges of comic shelves, some use wall-mounted shelves from Ikea, etc. The Avengers now take up three shelves in my loft, so I display the 'non-traditional' Avengers on other shelves. I also have two Spidey villain shelves, an FF villain shelf, a Defenders shelf, a gods and deities shelf (with my Recorder mod as well as Thor, Loki, Dormammu, Mephisto, Herc, Enchantress, Ikarus). For a short time I had a Champions shelf. I'm sure a few others will be on to tell you how they display theres!

Have fun!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Avengers Guy' there have been 139 regular figs released so far, and there are roughly 139 ways to display your collection:)

Thor8 said...

As I've said before I'm not a Spiral fan or follower, but every time I look at this sculpt as it goes through it's progressing stages I just love it more and more. I find it is the best female sculpt up to date and her facial features are truly #1. Songbird on the other hand could use some improving on her facial features and her hair color needs some touch-up. Maybe if we could see her from other angles like Spiral my impressions might change.

Thank you very very much Rich for answering my inquiry about Marvel's involvment in the process of these figurines.

Great to know Odin is being worked on and with the Thor movie comming in 2011,it seems it going to be a very happy new year indeed.

Well time to wish all my mates a very very merry Christmas and a stupendous new year, may the Lord"s blessing be with us all.

And last but not least, Happy bithday to one of my Warroirs Three,Robert.

Thanks, Thor8 and Bagman F.F.F. for the birthday sentiments. Still working through my birthday comicbooks - and two Masterworks arrived today, too! Ah, life is grand!

Avenger Guy, I recently broke off Hawkeye's bow for a second time. And that was with a feather duster! So, now I use an artist's brush to dust. It's not a brush for detailed work, in fact it's almost the size of brush I used to paint with in primary school. I picked up a cheap set of brushes from The Works shop in Glasgow for a couple of pounds and they worked fine. I have to admit I dust once a year. I'm curious how other people do it without damaging the figurines.

Thor8, can I be Hogun?

Thor8 said...

Sure Robert if you really want to. To be honest I had you pegged as Fandral. I'll let Pirate and Jacadoo{if he ever shows up again}duke it out and see which one of them will be Volstagg.

Robert said...

Flattered by the Fandrall association, Thor8. I think the fact I 'chatter' a lot on here and Fandrall is also fond of the sound of his own voice is the root of your identification! Sadly, I am neither handsome nor a charmer!

Anywho, anyone bought their comicbooks this week yet? Particularly Fantastic Four...?

Went to my LCS yesterday as a matter of fact...got a few- Secret Avengers, Dead Avengers and What If...but what was really amazing was that they'd put out a box of old 70's Marvel Comics that they'd found hidden somewhere (!) and where selling them off for 50p each!
We're talking early 70's here- Avengers approx 110-120, runs of Gerber's Man-Thing, DD and Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, STARLIN's Cap Marvel (!), Englehart's Cap America, Ghost Rider, Marvel Team-Up etc...so needless to say I bought loads...and I'm going back today with my geeky catalogue!

Don't know, Bob. I was re-reading recent FF's a month or two back and came across a letter from some prat saying Jonathan Hickman understands Reed Richards better than Stan Lee. To tie-in with the Thor movie, we're getting an Odin special and, if my sums are right, we get an Asgardian (Ares) the week the film is released in the UK. A mere four weeks later we get Balder, too. All great news.

However, nothing seems to be happening for Cap. It's a bit late to complain about this but it seems a shame we're not getting at least a regular figure that's connected to ol' Winghead. MODOK gets mentioned regularly. There are alos loads of decent candidates for a regular: Crossbones, Zola, Agent 13, a Hydra goon or AIM 'bee-keeper', even a WWII Bucky or original Cap himself.

Actually, no, a multi-pack of the Invaders. NOW we're talking!

Made a start on the assorted comics santa delivered. Just struggled through something called Wolverine The Best There Is , loada pish, wolvie becomes Edward Scissorhands some guy then touches him which sends him aff on some kinda hallucinogenic trip, Wolvie then attempts to disembowel himself. all good clean family fun . Any who just as i was about to line the budgie cage with it when I spotted a very cool Man-Thing villain named the Scavenger, I always knew he was far too good a character to be used in one measly story ...and 35yrs later i've been proved right :)
I can't look at another turkey.. until Green Lantern comes oot... Thankyou, thankyou ladies and gentlmen i've been Ted Sallis and you've been wonderful.

Cue embarrassed face! Of course, you're right, Thor8! Not sure what I was thinking there. (Maybe 'cause Thor used to fight him a lot when I was young?) Anyway, I'm off to look into retirement homes. It's clear that senility has already started to set in...

Query: Has anyone else had problems getting their hands on Beta Ray Bill from their LCS? Just back from FP and it's been delayed, which is a pain as I've really been looking forward to placing Bill next to the Odinson. I suspect Malekith has opened the Casket of Ancient Winters again. (By the way, Bob, you still haven't said what your verdict is regarding the Simonson volumes.)

The, um, indignant letter I wrote to the FF Letters' Page has not been printed in #586, Ted. Maybe just as well.

Recommedation: Warriors Three LS. Didn't think a lot of part 1 but enjoyed part 2 today.

Hi all, hope Christmas was brilliant and you're not feeling too stuffed to enjoy New Year's.

I have just today finished the last two issues of the 3rd volume of the Simonson Thors, Robert.
It was an epic ride, with an intriguing mix of old-school superhero yarn and mythic story-telling. The high-light was still the raid on Hela's Realm. The first part with the whole Surtur's Sword thing had a magnificent slow build-up (Doom-Doom! etc...) to the final confrontation, but I felt the ending could have been slightly more legendary. Still, brilliant stuff, and deserving of it's iconic status.
Been reading those old 70s comics I got from my LCS...some interesting retcon stuff has happened in the Starlin Cap Marvels I noticed. There's a bit where Eon explains to CM the history of Titan, and Starlin is talking about Olympus,Zeus and Chronos, among other stuff. Now this was published before Jack Kirby came up with the whole Eternals thing, which was later put firmly into the MU (in Thor actually), and later still was given connections to Thanos, Mentor, Eros etc. These 'Titans' were now Eternals, and not off-shoots from the Greek Gods as Starlin had intended. And therefore in the reprint GN 'The Life and Death of Captain Marvel', the editors have changed Olympus to Olympia (The Eternal's earth home), Zeus to Zuras, and Chronos to Kronos. Anyway, thought that was an interesting bit of retconning from original comic to reprint...guess there's quite a bit of that going on...

Waffled on long enough for now... cheers guys,

BD

Robert said...

Glad you enjoyed it, Bob. When Simonson stops doing the art, the run does seem to run out of legs a little (even with Sal Buscema doing some brilliant work). Still, an incredible career- and character-defining run by Simonson.

Hopefuly, if and when Eaglemoss get round to making the Warriors Three they do a Simonson Fandrall. There's not a huge difference between then and now in how he looks but recently Fandrall seems to be wearing some sort of fancy t-shirt. Back then, he wore a thicker tunic that seemed more durable, protective and appropriate for a colder climate.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

" He wore a thicker tunic that seemed more durable, protective and appropriate for a colder climate"
Sheesh,immortals are big jessies.
next you'll be telling me Thor wears thermal undercrackers?

Robert said...

I know what you mean, Ted, though I'd like to point out that he's not living a life of quiet retirement in Florida. Asgard has many inhospitable, often snowy, regions and Fandrall's often in battle or on a quest. God or no god, he can still get cold and clothing needs to be durable, not least to withstand attacks from all manner of murderous giants and other creatures. The Simonson Fandrall looks like he's wearing a weathered leather tunic; the modern Fandrall looks like he's wearing one of those flimsy breathable sports tops. He's not going to the gym to pose in front of mirrors, he's off to hunt Frost Giants in arctic conditions!

And, if you want to go with a rather basic argument, it just plain looks better.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Course you right Robert, gods reflect the culture that they sprang from. ie big hairy ass vikings would portay their gods thus.
That's why greek gods are always semi naked and smothered in beauty products.Nothing wrong with lovely big oiled up george michael loving gods

Robert said...

Ted, I loved Stuart Immonen's take on Asgard. (He was drawing Thor when Odon "died".) While it was grand, like Asgard should be, it was also very reminiscent of a Viking settlement, all timber and pointy roofs so snow would slide off. Absolutely perfect. I love Kirby, yet his take on Asgard was quite alienlike and futuristic. Even as a kid I never found it completely convincing. Asgardians always gave me the impression they preferred a basic lifestyle, that they had no real interest in developing technologies to make life more comfortable. As the reboot by JMS has made clear, they even dislike mild weather, preferring instead snow and frost. (This of course led Balder to rather stupidly relocate to Latveria.) Basically, there's tough, really tough and then Asgardian tough!

How about a Guardians of the Galaxy (original team) as a sub-set so as not to take any spots away from any future extension line-up. Maybe in a style not to unlike the Bowen mini-bust 5-pack.

Thor8 said...

Don't really understand why EM frowns so much at multi-paks. Bowens has been doing it for years and their products are way more costly, yet they seem to sell well and have kept on producing them. So have other lines of collectibles. I truly believe this would be an easier (and for some the only) way to get some of Marvels characters whom although are well liked and have a healthy amount of followers,do not stand out on their own or have had enough solo appearances. That would be the case of The Guardians Bagman mentioned, and The Warriors Three,The Wrecking Crew,Squadron Supreme,Zodiac,Soviets, and others. So what do you say EM? Will you reconsider? I would love to see an Invaders pack and maybe even a Liberty Legion pack

Robert said...

Some great ideas from Bagman F.F.F. and Thor8. I'd definitely buy all the multi-packs mentioned, although I can understand why in the economic pinch right now that Eaglemoss are reluctant to release them. In fact, I think I'd be MORE likely to buy some of these characters if they came as a complete set, than if they were released one regular per extension. We have no guarantee the collection will last long enough to complete these line-ups and that is something that could put me off a little. If I can get the entire GotG, for instance, I would definitely buy them.

BobDiamond said...

I would certainly be in favour of an Original Guardians Sub-Set.
They are perhaps the last remaining group of heroes from The Silver Age to be represented (coming out in the late 60s- although their real fame was as 70s/Bronze Age characters after appearing in The Defenders...).
Each one of these guys is a uniquely designed and iconic character...cold even include Nikki as the last 'classic' recruit.
This would be an amazing Sub-set, and highly sought-after, particularly amongst'Old-School' Collectors- which I believe there are many!

Side note....if I take out the 3 Guardians from my 'wish-list'- now that they're in the sub-set category- I can replace them with:

Yellow Claw
Thundra
Pip The Troll

...ahhh, if only...

Robert, you asked about Beta Ray Bill recently..
I was half expecting him to turn-up soon in my subby-pack, but had forgotten all about The Scarlet Spider. So it was him and Batroc that I received this morning, and will have to wait a whole month for the amazing looking BRB. SS and Batroc were pretty good however!

Hi, Bob. I like both the SS and Batroc figurines, although I had very minor quibbles about SS's blue top being rather snug and that fact my Batroc figure is not holding his moustache. But BRB is the one I was excited about. FP in Glasgow usually get the figures in on a Wednesday, so BRB may have arrived today.

Nice to se Pip in your revised list. I put him in without any expectation we'll ever see him. Still, we can dream!

P.S. Disillusioned and bored by modern comics, I'm phasing out buying any new ones. My money will be better spent on plugging gaps in my Silver Age collection. Sad, but there you have it.

Thor8 said...

Robert;I've been doing the same thing as you are, well not exactly, cause I still purchase the Avengers titles and Thor, but nevertheless I've been cutting down on modern day books for the same reason as you have and I've been restructuring my Thor collection which I had so foolishly sold. I have gotten most of the books I needed in great condition and (with the exception of one or two books) at basement bargain prices. I am now only 20+ books from having the complete collection once more. That's what I was referring to in past posts when I said I was busy restructuring Asgard.

After collecting comicbooks since January 1976, stopping buying everything (bar Cap, probably) will be a major life-changing decision, Thor8. I have only once before ever thought this way (during Heroes Reborn). When I look at comicbooks now, what do I see? Cap doesn't look like Cap, hell, he isn't even Steve Rogers (and Bucky is 'dead'). Thor doesn't look like Thor, neither does Shellhead. Ben Grimm, Wolvie and Spidey are Avengers! The Hulk's comic is a complete disaster with Hulks everywhere you look. One of the FF is being 'killed off'. The list goes on and on. I can hardly recognise the MU now. I don't want comics to never change, that's not it. They have, however, changed more than I can easily accept.

Maybe I'm just a dinosaur. Then again, I could enjoy these changes if the writing was half-decent. Civil War was inspired and there have been other highlights. However, they are getting rarer and rarer. Most of my fav artists and writers are dead, retired or out-of-fashion. Bendis, Fraction, van Lente, etc. are not writing comicbooks that excite or even interest me. I mean, Chaos War?!! Dreadful. Mark Waid's excellent Cap mini-series just shows up how awful my monthly stash of 30-odd comics has been for months, if not years.

No more. In a month or two, when I have completed mini-series and story arcs, you'll find me of a Saturday not in FP but Kollectibles. You can stick your Bronze Age or Heroes Age or whatever passes for comicbooks now up your jumper. (Yes, I censored the original noun.)

Robert said...

Apparently, we are reading "Modern Age" comicbooks and I want to read "neo-Silver" work...

In 1993, Alan Moore decided to undo the changes he had brought about with Watchmen and created 1963. He wasn't the first since, already in the eighties, John Byrne, Roger Stern, Paul Smith and Tom DeFalco had tried to restore Silver Age elements. Since then many creators, including Kurt Busiek, Mark Waid, Michael Allred, Alex Ross, Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns and Jeff Parker have created comics harking back to earlier periods in style, characters or storytelling. This trend is sometimes called "neo-silver". The diversity of styles and influences makes it increasingly difficult to identify and isolate periods.

I know how you feel Robert as I feel pretty much the same way. I know changes are inevitable, but quite frankly things are getting out of hand in my opinion. I hate the idea of everyone this side of aunt May and Jarvis being an Avenger. There was a time when you really had to prove yourself in order to become a member. Now it's just "Hi my name is Jerk-Man and I have the power to make all those around me look like jerks!" "Okay you're in!" My biggest agony though is the fact that Marvel's writers today don't give a twit about continuity. One of the main factors that made Marvel great was the enormous lengths that the writers would go through to make every fact and detail,no matter how small, fit into what had gone before. If something didn't quite fit or was contradictory,Marvel fans and writers alike would band together and make things right. Nowadays you just make up what ever you want to and no explanation is given. I'm still trying to figure out were Norman Osborn got his healing factor,or who it was that they buried in his place at his funeral. What ever happened to Pete and MJ's baby?,and how did Mephisto get the power to alter history, bring people back from the dead, and erase the memory of a whole planet without causing major disasters in the time continuum?
In the past writers would gives us stories that would later become major epics on their own such as the Kree-Skrull War which at the time was not really done as an epic highlight but turned out to be on it's own. It wasn't even titled Kree=Skrull War till much later. Now all that writers want to do are major event stories that cross throughout the whole Marvel line of books and most of the time end up giving us mediocre plots with lots of hype.

Robert said...

Thor8, I nearly gave myself a neck injury I was nodding so much at your last post.

The Death of Gwen Stacy storyline was a classic from begining to end. Gwen died, Norman died. End of. When Conway brought back Gwen he was metaphorically lynched. Fans seemed far less concerned when Norman came back. It's only got worse from there. Death means nothing now. No, incorrect, it's a 'stunt'. Death was always dodged by the villains by some inventive solution, but now it's an exploitative marketing ploy. DC started the craze with the death of Superman and if Stan was still in charge there is no way he would follow anyone. (The Avengers are being turned into a JLA as well, another wrong-headed following of DC.) I have a large collection of ASM, complete sets of Spectacular and Web, and yet I stopped buying Spidey titles partly because they were endlessly psychologically torturing him but mainly because of Sins Past, the worst piece of improbable, history rewriting, personality altering (and violating) and just plain offensive story ever. (It remains the only story in three-and-a-half that has made me really angry.)

There was a time when I could rattle off the Avengers line-up of active, inactive and reserve members. Even allowing for natural expansion, it still seems like pretty much every hero has been an Avenger now. I sorted my CMFC heroes onto shelves; the Avengers took up three packed shelves and that's even after I left Hulk, Namor and Dr. Strange in the Defenders; three of the FF with the FF; etc.

Och, I could go on moaning all night...

Now now guys, we discussed this. Subsets are for redos and alternate costumes as not to disrupt the line-up of magazines for regular or casual collectors who may not be able to afford splashing out on a whole set of characters when they just want one.

I am hoping 2011 is the year of the redo / alternate costume.

I read 2011 is Captain America's 70th anniversary, so I hope it starts with him. An original Cap, A Bucky New Cap, Ultimate Cap, and why not, the movie Cap if you want a 4 piece. If not, throw in original Bucky for good measure. :)

Sorry, Leigh, Thor8 and I weren't at the meeting about subsets. I was in space, mediating at a Kree-Skrull conference (lots of shouting) and Thor8 was leading a charity hike around the Watcher's lunar sanctuary with the 2010 Playboy Playmates of the Month. Frankly, he gets all the best jobs.

P.S. Don't say anything, Bagman F.F.F., but I only know two. (#2 & #8.)

SUBSETS STUFF
My personal preference is for subsets dedicated to important sagas and story arcs (eg. Age of Apocalypse, Annihilation, Planet Hulk) or the exploration of specific areas of the Marvel Universe (eg. Atlantis, Asgard, Alternate dimensions, etc).

The thematic logic would prove sucessful and versatile - as it would allow subsets to cover a wide range of characters as well as teams, costume variants, etc.
in a meaningful way and in a very attractive format.

I hope 2011 will be the year when EM give us subsets in Marvel Universe thematic format.

Last game of the year.

Based on Thor8's and my rants about everyone and their granny becoming an Avenger - the latest being Dr. Strange - what character already released or confirmed in the CMFC, who at present has no link to the Avengers, will become one during 2011?

My first guess was Uncle Ben (I predict he will be resurrected during a 205-part story that reveals he is Norman Osborn's dad), and then I realised he is not a CMFC figure. Okay, my guess is... um, ... Doc Samson. (Actually, I think that's a decent shout.)

Hi, just wanted to say this is brilliant collection. However although i understand the idea of mixing old and new characters to keep the collection fresh. I feel there are alot of characters going underlooked.

It seems the collection these days consists of classic old recognisable characters or modern lesser known popular characters. Which is great dont get me wrong but i feel the lesser known characters from the past are not getting a fair deal. Now i know there is an issue with how much of a past some of the lesser known characters have as to filling a magazine with there history but... there are a few rare characters i think needs to be considered!

1. Morph
> I feel this character has been underlooked. Not only is he brilliant and funny, he would make quiet a comical addition to the series. Think about it, this is a character whom barely had a history in the Marvel 616 universe. But became popular by the animated series of the 90's then became a prominate character in the age of apocaylpse then finally transporting across the multiuniverse with the exodus group... he isnt a very well known character but for someone who appeared in only a couple of issues - he has come a long way.

2. Hannible King
> When is Blade going to get friends? Hannible became an alie to Blade in the comics facing off against dracula. He doesnt really have much of a history but Hannible King would be an excellent way to explore whats been happening to Blade now without having to release a new Blade figurine.

3. Smyth and the Spider Slayer
> another character who had a larger role in the animated series but yet to appear in this collection.

Robert said...

1. The tartan. And the kind of clan tartan should give you an idea what he's up to as well (i.e., hunting, formal gathering, ...)
2. Vertigo (the villain, not the condition) makes people so dizzy they vomit and lose control of their bowels.
3. No. Sassy is promised to Wendigo. Ulik has a thing for Neil Lennon.
4. Burst pipes?

BETA RAY BILL
Just got him from Forbidden Planet. Totally awesome.

I must admit, I'm biased as I'm a huge fan of the horse-faced superhero. Even so, in my objective opinion, this is one of the best figurines of the entire collection.

For size, pose and detail, the sculpt is beautiful. And the paint work is high quality.

Just look at the highly detailed face, especially the facial muscles and the teeth. Then there's the great costume and weaponry details, like the 'cyborg Thor' motif on the chest, the wings on the sides of the head, the cape, and the powerful golden Strombreaker hammer.

The magazine is ace too, featuring a great character bio and some amazing artwork.

Thank you Rich & EM!

Guys, one of the contestants on Celebrity Mastermind tonight was answering questions on Spider-Man. I just watched it on BBC iplayer and got two wrong (questions dealing with storylines after I stopped buying, darn it). All the rest I answered easily before Humphreys had finished the question. Give it a go; it's about ten minutes into it and the guy answering is a coloured bloke, don't know his name. He was very good, so you'll have to be quick to beat him on some of the early questions. Have fun!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Aye pretty simple stuff, even a part timer like me got mibbe 9?
You are correct about clan identification Robert, Tartan is the most visible indication..However if yoo were to have a sly look up a scotsmans kilt and therein discover him to be in possession of a quarterpounder you can be pretty sure he's a McDonald.
Has Dr Bong been an Avenger?

Robert said...

I knew where you were going with your questioning, Ted. Personally I get annoyed when, as wedding parties draw to a close, drunk women think it's fun to lift up your kilt to have a look-see. Mind you, the look of wonder in their plate-like eyes is rather gratifying.

Yeh, they were pretty easy questions. Did you get the Carter Lombardo question? As a huge Ross Andru fan I was on that question like Volstagg on a hot dog! (Sorry, re-reading Jurgens-JR jr Thors tonight. A bit of light reading after reading about the Battle of the Marne this afternoon.)

I like it so much i went out and Just bought a Euromillions ticket heck if i win i'll get two of them :)
That's what's great about collecting original art ( very, very occasionaly these days) it's just like collecting comics set yourself a limit, you can purchase published art from $30.00 to $300 000.
For me it's far more exciting than owning any comic. After all there will be thousands if not hundreds of thousands of the same issue,I'll never forget the time i scrimped ennuf to buy a Jack Kirby Machine Man page, i sat and stared at it for weeks, i just could not believe that this page had been in Jacks studio and was now thousands of miles away in a wee scottish toon,And it was mine!!!
I saw a John Buscema Avengers cover going for a mere $38000, First Grim Reaper i believe, If i win big tonight Robert i'll get you that as a consolation prize :)

Robert said...

It's a lovely thought, Ted, but considering how much is needing done on the house - I'm just back from B&Q, incidentally - if you spent that amount of money on original art my wife would blow her stack! Justifiably, it has to be said. For the sake of my marriage, don't!

P.S. Good luck tonight!

P.P.S. It IS rather stunning. I lusted after this book as a kid, but, I mean, even if I could find a copy - I never saw one till years later - it was a whole 50p! Who had that kind of money back then? Elvis? Howard Hughes?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Was the Spidey/Superman crossover a Marvel Treasury Edition?
I never owned it, i bought a Hulk Superman book in which Superman stood there and let the Hulk take his best shots, would the Hulks anger increase his strength enough to budge the man of steel?????? don't ask me i fell asleep reading it and never finished the story.
Oh and Robert any money i win tonight will be spent on a little piece of essential house repair :)
But hey a guy can dream.

Robert said...

Yep, it was. I was handling mine just a few minutes ago. (Ooh err, missus!) The reason I was at B&Q is I'm trying to work out a way of mounting my treasuries on the sloping loft roof...

Robert said...

Actually, looking more closely, while the Superman vs Spider-Man book is the size of a treasury edition, it doesn't have a bar across the top saying it is, as the others do. So, technically speaking, I guess it's not a treasury, it's just the same size as a treasury. Also, now that I think about it, treasuries were classic reprints and the Marvel-DC editions were original material. (I have a rather lovely Hulk-Batman edition, too. Batman wins, which annoyed me on first reading, but he cheats and, when you think about it, it's an entirely plausible win.)

Robert said...

The plot thickens, Ted!

The second Superman/ Spidey crossover WAS a treasury edition (number 28, if you're interested). The (ridiculous) scene you complained about with Hulk uselessly pounding on Superman is in that book. The story is quite uninspiring and I have never felt the urge to revisit it. A remarkable statement when you realise that John Buscema, Joe Sinnot, Klaus Janson, Terry Austin, Walt Simonson and Bob Layton, among others, were involved in the art!

Anyway, the two Supes-Spidey team-ups, the (beautifully drawn) Bats-Hulk story and the X-Men-Teen Titans story are in Crossover Classics: The Marvel/ DC Collection, if you're interested. This edition is not as big as the original 'treasuries' but they are better quality versions. The improvement in colouring over the original 1976 Supes-Spidey team-up is huge.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

He he Robert, you have Batman and Superman comics in your otherwise MARVELous collection ~:)
I loved the old treasury editions, i used to save up ciggie tokens for a purchase like that . The Conan Treasury is my fav, That Barry Smith cover is one of thee iconic images, Marvel let Conan go to shit, i still havnae forgiven them fully, never wil :(

Robert said...

Ross Andru drawing Spidey - even with Superman, how could I resist, Ted?

As for the Hulk-Bats book, I used to buy all things Greenskin. The art is glorious. A gent by the name of Garcia Lopez. If only he was a Marvel guy...

Anyway, notwishstanding my reasons, I won't be able to show my face in public now that my secret shame has been exposed.

LAWay said...

Galactus for an Avenger!

Happy New Year!

Robert said...

It's New York, Bagman F.F.F., and the tv antenna belongs to the Empire State Building.

The first prologue with Superman and Luthor is in Metropolis, the second prologue with Spidey and Doc Ock in NYC. The two universes meet when the villains are locked up together in a New Mexico jail (3rd prologue). From this point the places exist in the real world. The heroes, in civilian guise, meet in the first chapter, which is in NYC and the pair meet in their alter-egos in a double-page splash at the start of chapter 2. (That's the image that featured on the back of Spidey reprint comics for weeks on end in 1976.)

I never thought I would see the original art for sale. Even at that price, I can't believe no one has bought it.

BobDiamond said...

Hi guys, HAPPY NEW YEAR to all of you!!!

Just been catching-up on the blog... that Ross Andru Superman/ Spiderman cover is one of the most iconic images from my childhood. I was a proud owner of that comic when it first came out- and I believe it was actually 75p !!!, not a mere 50p -as the other tabloid-size specials were. I think I must have read it a 100 times- quite worn out now from what I remember.
It is still the greatest single issue Marvel/ DC comic ever produced- the art is amazing- especially on that scale.

My other most loved comic from those days was the first Treasury Grab-Bag special with the Christmasy cover, and reprints of FF/Avengers vs The Hulk, and a wonderful SM/Torch team-up with The Sandman from MTU 1. It also had the classic Wally Wood drawn Sub-mariner vs DD story, and a very poignant Black Widow Christmas story- which still seems as fresh and 'adult' today as it did to me then. If I had to take one comic with me to a desert island I think it would be that one.
Quite agree with you. Ted The BWS Conan Tabloid is absolutely stunning- he is my all-time favourite comic artist. I even did one of my essays on him at Art college....though the **** who marked it didn't consider the subject 'worthy'. What did he know anyway!

H N Y again guys, BD

Robert said...

75p!!! My goodness, are you related to the Rothschilds? That was the equivalent of about two months of normal comics!

The Romita covers to the two Holiday Grab-Bags ('75 and '76) are lovely, Bob, amongst my favourites of the great man's work. They are quirky and fun in that peculiarly '70s way. Genius and innocence all at once.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Checked oot the treasury editions on fleabay quite reasonable considering the size of em. Couldn't see the BWS Conan treasury,Knowing my luck this will be the one commanding the highest prices.

Robert said...

On the subject of cost in dollars, the Superman vs Spider-Man book was $2 at time of original release. I am re-reading the Jurgen-Jr jr Thors and last night read Thor Vol.2 #17 (Nov 1999). Out of curiosity, I checked how much it cost and it was $1.99. Gee, the dollar ain't what it used to be.

I would love to see Treasuries come back, you know. Maybe even bigger! Imagine you were a kid and that's how you met comics! They do it for some kid's books so why not comics, too? Yoo hoo, Marvel! Instead of seeing how many mediocre Thor and Avengers comics you can flood the market with, what about making large format comicbooks?

Robert said...

Bob, slight correctin from earlier post: there were three Grab-Bags, not two. The first was in 1974. The cover pencils look very John Buscema to me but hard to tell with a thumbnail image. (I don't have that one, obviously.)

Oh, Leigh, I remember the ignorance of youth well. I hate to be the one to break this to you - you may want to sit down - BUT... you will get older than you are now!! (I know, I KNOW, I didn't believe it when I was young, either! I mean, who would have thought it!) Also, old age often comes with other qualities, like a keen sense of fraternity and equality. ('Course some of us start off with it and don't have to wait...)

And Bagman F.F.F., there is no shame in not remembering back so far. It's not old age, it's just that lots has happened in the intervening years. I mean, the Conan Treasury came out in 1975. The Vietnam War was just ending and Ali and Frazier were still battering lumps out of each other in the ring. When the year started, women didn't even have equal rights in the workplace! Most importantly, when you have lived a life as interesting and, well, quietly heroic as us, you're bound to forget some of the details along the way.

Robert said...

Question for Ted, Bob, Bagman F.F.F., Thor8 and all the oldies!

Did you buy the Spider-Man punchbag, the Captain Britain costume (mask, lion 'apron' and wristlets), Marvel records (the ones with narrated stories), the Spider-Man album or any other wonderful '70s stuff?

Word verification: "amoff."

Never seen any of the records or the punchbag as a kid,the cap'n Britain costume is a new one to me as well Robert, have to search Google for that one. I always wished i had the Marvel bronze coins, Spiderman, Hulk and Conan from 1974.
70's stuff that i've bought seeing as how i'm all growed up ---

7-11 slurpee cups 1975 (set of 60)
7-11 slurpee cups 1977 (set of 40)
7-11 glasses 1978 (set of 6)

Just looking at that i realised something, i have to get out more!!!!.

Robert said...

The Captain Britain comic sold the costumes. I got one, with its Scottish lion, but no idea what happened to it. I had two punchbags, with large Romita Spideys. They didn't last long and I burst both of them. There was also a Hulk one. They were advertised on the back of the UK reprint comics for months. Not sure if they were ever sold in the USA but doubt it.

The Spidey album was re-released as a CD a few years back. I've never been very curious about it.

3 Holiday Grab-Bags
3 Various Conans
Hulk, Avengers, FF, Howard the Duck, Team-Up and the classic 'Cap America's Bicentennial Battles' by Kirby.
Also got the first Spidey/ Superman and the Hulk/ Batman.
Recently found a DC tabloid version from the 70s featuring reprints of older Dick Tracy comics- which is pretty interesting.
Robert, you mentioned if they still do tabloid-size ever. The most recent Marvel one I can think of was an excellent FF/ Superman cross-over from about 10 yrs ago. DC have done a few in the last decade or so with Alex Ross- JLA, Batman, Superman....I've only got the 2 JLA ones. Got to say his art work is stunning on that scale.

I kid thee not my verification word is bogwipwe

Robert said...

Favourite moment in Warlock? There are so many brilliant moments I could list a thousand. (That's probably an exaggeration but I woudl not bet money on it.)

And, no doubt we will get the modern costume, Ted, although I have to say I prefer the original look that her creator gave her, the look she wore during the classic Warlock comics and during the high-profile Infinity series, the look she has worn for most of her history, etc. Of course, all this will be ignored and we'll get the modern look instead. Probably because some johny-come-latelies who have only read the Annihilation stuff vote for it on the forum, whereas the views of die-hards like myself who have followed the character for decades - even buying reprint editions of the Warlock issues - will be worthless. It'll be Balder and Drax all over again.

I'm with you Robert- I think that the original Gamora costume is an amazing piece of classic Starlin awesomeness!
The newer stuff, although not bad,is just generic warrior garb- anyone could be in it. BD

Robert said...

Don't mention the footie! We took Dad to Ibrox today as he's recovering from a bug. The trip back was something I would have rather avoided! He wants to go to the memorial service tomorrow (he was at the game in '71) but he is not really fit for it. Hope I'm not that stubborn at 76. Goodness knows, I am cranky enough already, as my last post shows and I'm about to demonstrate again below:

Bob, Ted, Bagman F.F.F. and Thor8, you are all gents who talk sense. However, I have decided that you are all, like me, a dinosaur. Our time was a wonderful, golden age but it has gone. The comicbooks are not for us any more. We prefer the way comicbooks used to be and read modern comics, not because they are great in themselves, but because of declining echoes of what we saw all those years ago. The drift from what I loved about the comics as a kid has been so gradual and slow I have not even noticed how far the drift has travelled. I'm not prepared to let the distance get any greater. So, no modern comics for me. I'm going back to the Silver and Bronze Ages (and early Modern Age) and I'm bloody staying there. Thor is still Don Blake, Shellhead's still in his classic armour, Andru is still on Spidey, there's only one Avengers team and they stay in the mansion, the Vision is still alive, Wanda is still a heroine, Mark Waid is writing Cap, Asgard is intact, ... I could go on forever.

Make Mine Marvel (circa 1976, preferably)

Robert said...

Sorry, guys, went off on one again there.

The only dinosaur is me.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Nah! you've just had a lang day Robert.Must have been an emotional day for your dad,

Robert said...

Yeh. Dad said little, just looked miles away at times. He never talks about that day. I don't remember the day at all but it was actually worse for Mum. Dad left by a different stairway to the one where the accident occurred and made his way home. However, a large number of people - including my Uncle Christie who had been in the Celtic end - started phoning my mum to check Dad was okay. Mum therefore had a long and very anxious wait till he got home.

But he did get home. Sixty-six people, many of them teenagers and children, didn't. A sad, sad day for the families and for Glasgow.

Finally got Beta Ray Bill today. Fabulous figure. As a wag once said, it's hard to make two inches seem impressive, and yet Eaglemoss have managed it with Bill. His billowing cape in particular is beautifully done. While the painting is off in places, the face looks excellent. All in all, a top notch sculpt and more than worth the mere £5.99 it cost.

Which just goes to prove that we don't have nearly enough of Thor's supporting cast. I mean, six years have passed and still no sign of the Warriors Three being released! Instead we have Man-Wolf, Titania, Impossible Man, Ikarus and a few other deadbeats. By the bristling beard of Odin, it's just not right!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Whew! just finished my entire 70's collection of Son of Satan comics....which consisted of Son Of Satan #1
Anycoo, I spotted something therein that harked back to an earlier blether we had here concerning Marvel/DC collaborations,There is one more major Marvel/DC event none of you dared to mention,So c'mon Bagman, Bob and Robert man up! do you own it?...and do you still reread it ? It was a treasury edition too

Robert said...

Another Marvel/ Dodgy Collection Treasury? Was the Teen Titans-X-Men story originally in treasury form? Or are you on about the Wizard of Oz, which is actually the very first Marvel-Diced Carrots collaboration?

Anyway, the reason I was on was to ask where folk are displaying BRB. I have complicated things by having a Recorder mod, but are you placing him next to Thor? Or is Thor in the Avengers line-up and BRB is with galactic heroes/ characters? Or what?

Thor8 said...

Robert,I agree with you 100%.It' about time that EM includes the much wanted and much needed Wariors Three. It could be done as EM's first triple back or as a Fandral & Hogun double pack (after The Swordman & Mantis double pack)followed by A Volstagg special. I want my Asgardians.

Thor8 said...

Robert; I've been having such a hard time deciding were to keep my Thor figurine,if either with The Avenges or with the Asgardians that I've reached the decision of purchasing two additional Thor figurine so I can have one in each group. The third Thor figurine is for my youngest son,who keeps asking me to give him mine.

BobDiamond said...

Hey Ted, you must be talking about Marvel and DC's very first joint-venture...The Wizard of Oz (or was it called The Land of Oz?)
Anyway, I don't own it, and I'm not even sure if I've ever seen a copy of it in my travels....Read an interesting anecdote about it however...
The great John Buscema drew the entire thing- and I've seen images from it, and it looks beautiful.
What's amazing is that he did it all from childhood memory of seeing the film when it first came out! Being the 70s there wasn't even a Video they could get out to copy from, and so JB only had some character portraits to work from. Pretty talented guy to say the least.

BD

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

The wiz it woz.
Nice anecdote about John Buscema Bob,the word great is tossed about like so much confetti these days that the word has become pretty much meaningless but big John is an all time GREAT!
Thor8 , i can relate to what your saying, My son now knows when the subbie packs are due and has to be there at the opening, Thank heavens for superheo squad figures :)

Robert said...

Brilliant stories, guys. I don't have children but I do have two rabbits who love to eat paper. They even chewed through a strimmer box to get at the instructions booklet! (Not sure if that is normal bunny behaviour or not.) Anyway, they are not interested in the figures and it's just the comicbooks themselves I need to keep out-of-reach!

As for the Odinson, I think I will need to buy another figure so he can stand with the other Asgardians and also with the Big Three on my Avengers shelf. Maybe I will try and paint the second figure in the armour he made for himself when Hela cursed him...

Query: Re-reading my Jurgens Thors and guess who popped up? Statement: The man (er, robot) himself, the Recorder! Conclusion: What a welcome guest-star!

Thor8 said...

I'll be trying my hand on making a recorder out of an extra Machine Man figurine, some of my earliest post both here and on the forum were request for a Battle Armour Thor Special

Robert said...

A wee tip, Thor8: be careful with the arm. I snipped off the arm, removed the telecoping part and then filed the edges of the lower and upper are flat so that they would glue neatly. Thing is, the forearm part ended up slightly thinner than it needed to be to join perfectly. This may be unavoidable or I may have been overly careful to produce a smooth join. It's not very noticeable but worth watching out for. The rest of the mod is simple: file the belt off and repaint. (I can't remember if I also filed his legs as well.) The Recorders 'ears' are usually circular but later became rectangular. I just took the path of least resistance and repainted Machine Man's 'ears' but I will go back and do it 'classic' soon!

As for Battle Armour Thor, the main problem would seem to be the mask...

I love a bit of hyperbole as much as the next man , but i have recently read three comics that have promised me "senses shattering tales" and to be honest appart from a touch of tinnitus ma senses seem fine.
Who was the middleage dude selling his Marvel collection on Dickinsons real deal today? anyone live near Pudsey?

Out of curiosity, what were the three comics, Ted?

P.S. You have seriously dodgy taste in tv. :)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

ooooh!, well Mr Sky arts 1, if you must know my sis rang to tell me there was geek stuff on channel 3 i just caught the very end of it. The fella had a fair pile of mid seventies Thors and new line up X-Men, I think he got £150 for them . I looked at the ITV player but Dickinsons show is not available, It's got lots of Jeremy Kyle and Loose Women though.
I made a mistake only 2 of the comics promised to " shatter my senses, the other only promised me pulse pounding action :)
Warlock#9 "Now at last in his own senses shattering mag"whaaa?
Son of Satan#1 splash page "Special thanks to Jim Starlin for pencilling this senses shattering first issue splash page"
Did Starlin specify anything with his name attatched had to be described as senses shattering?
Oh!,and Marvel Chillers#1 promised a pulse pounding premier issue.....it lied

I had expected you to say the wife was watching it, Ted. Sky Arts? Ach, you know I consider Marvel Team-Up a cultural high point!

Corrr!!!!!!!!! Have a look on ebay at the spider-woman x fig, someones done some nice custom paintjobs , medusa, jean grey etc all with their tits oot,, cor, gertcha, ave it. Is this your work DP?.
My comedy highlight of 2011 so far.

Robert said...

Did you know they were for sale, Ted, or did you accidentally come across them?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

It was purely by chance. i noticed a rather nicely done Red Guardian mod ( from a Cap America base) when i clicked on other items by same seller. Well my eyes were assaulted by bared baps.

Robert said...

A raft of questions are raised by these mods, not the least of which is where you would display them? It's not exactly the thing you'd like your mother or girlfriend to notice. I'm struggling to think of any possible explanation for displaying one of these that doesn't make the owner a complete perv. All I can think of is shock value. Maybe a collector would say to a (male) friend: "Come and see my Marvel figures." The unsuspecting friend looks along the normal figures for a bit and then suddenly comes across a topless female figure. I suppose the reaction of the unsuspecting friend could be quite comical. I can't think of any other reason that doesn't make me worry a bit...

Robert said...

Mind you, if the owner forgot to put the topless mod away after the friend leaves, and a member of the family notices it before it's removed, well, that will take some explaining.

Moral of the story? These mods are just plain weird and should be avoided!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Heh. am naw going to fake moral outrage , they are just in the old tradition of bawdy british smut, they are the equivilent of those pens someone would bring to school, when you turned them upside down the ladies clothes miraculously dissapeared..COR!!!
And besides there are many a big name Marvel artist who aren't averse to knocking out tacky commission pieces, There's an issue of Comic Book Artist with some of the fantastic Frank Brunners work featured, It shows 2 of his commission pieces, A gorgeous Man-Thing scene replete with blonde woman in classic bondage pose and her big exposed hooters. Next page The most dangerous warrior women of all the Red Sonja in an exquisitely rendered scene of bloody carnage... but what's this.. Bikini failure!!! one of Sonja's melons seems to have come loose.
How the hell do you brooch the subject when you order the commission??
Imagine the scene 20 yrs ago at a big comic convention " Wow! Mr Kirby it's an honour to meet you, could you draw me a picture of Medusa..and....Mr Kirby.. could you draw her with her tits oot?"

Robert said...

If Sal Buscema offered to draw me a picture of a naked Black Widow or Ms Marvel having some sort of wardrobe malfunction, I'd say, "Thank you. Mr Buscema, but what I'd really like is a drawing of Captain America fighting the Red Skull."

But when you think about it, it's hard to say for sure which option is weirder.

BobDiamond said...

Option C is weirdest- Naked Cap 'fighting' Naked Red Skull....!

Well today marks the last day of the Christmas season for us here in the Caribbean. We celebrate "Día De Reyes" which translated to English means kings day in which we celebrate the occasion in which the wise men visited the newborn King. I imagine this would be the equivalent to the twelfth day of Christmas for you. A nice gift for me would be to see at least 5 of my most wanted figurines put into the next extension, along with two double packs and two specials and maybe a mega special to round it out.

I just thought of a "theme" for one of LAWay subsets. An Avengers alternate costume pack. It would include Battle Armour Thor,Ronin,Classic Armor Iron Man,Giant-Man. It could include just one magazine with a couple of pages dedicated to each figurine in the pack explaining why and when these heroes donned these suits and ID's. Heck Pym could probably get his own subset,I know.

An Avengers Alternative Costume subset is an excellent idea Thor 8. We could have :

Classic Ironman
Battle Armour Thor
Ronin

'Bucky' Cap

Hey everyone!
Ted, you forgot to mention about Phoenix now confirmed as a playable character! Quite interesting what I've seen about her. Apparently when defeated or near death (not sure the exact requirements), Jean becomes Dark Phoenix and her health bar restores itself to maximum! The catch however is the health slowly starts to decrease.
But yeah, 15 Feb, can't wait! Also seen in screenshots is what looks like the Green Goblin will become playable too, check them out! Finally there are rumours going round other Marvel characters to feature are the Sentinel and Taskmaster as playable characters and Galactus as the possible final boss.
Hurry up Feb 15!!!

PS. I got my Beta Ray Bill the other day and I must say, resin or not, this is one of the finest of the collection so far!

Thor8 - still here, but I thought you knew me better than call me an Asgardian pie eater!!!!!

Dude you have to admit the wasp fs is a disaster (just received the offending item) - one for the back shelf of the avengers).

We have got to have a new Thor along with Captain America to go with the movies.

Thor8 said...

So glad to see your still around jacadoo, for a moment I thought I would be calling my comrades in arms The Warriors Two.

I have to agree with you about The Wasp figurine. From the very beginning when we first got to see a sneak peek of her I had mentioned that her hair was wrong and that they (EM),should go with the clear resin wings, but no go and the results are less than enlightening. I don't know if your satisfied with your Tigra figurine, but she's another one I'm disappointed with. Such a sexy feline character who could have been made in so many awesome poses, instead is made in a pose that seems as if she's saying "huh, what happened?" Her facial expression is awful and her pose is quite bland. I sure hope future female Avengers such as Photon and Mocking bird are done in better taste. Tigra will be accompanying Wasp in the rear of The Avengers assembly.

Well the missus is calling so I'll have to get back to you guys later, adios!

Been busy and missed a lot of what's been going on this week, but just discovered that Stan now has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Great news. His speech was typical Stan. He opened by jokingly complaining, "Some Stan Lee Day. The schools are still open and the mail's being delivered!"

We are living in a Stan Lee World...

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Nice that Stan is getting the plaudits he so richly deserves, Usually geniuses have to be dead for decades before people recognise their greatness. I'll be 58 on Stan's 100th birthday, God bless ya Stan ,I'll down a few in your honour

Robert said...

Did I read that right, Ted? You share your birthday with The Man Himself? Wow. Can we swap birthdays? I'm being serious, I share my brithday with two of the guys from the Bee Gees!! How embarrassing is that?

Word verification: "ackeek"! Quite.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

eh sorry robert my birthday is july 2nd.........will you still....will you still be my fwend?
To clarify i will be in my 58th year when the great man goes centurion.

Robert said...

Yes, I got married on July 2nd!!!

So, if I forget your birthday next year, I have no excuse and you have permission to call me rude names!

Robert said...

Returning to the smut theme of a few days ago, I'm beginning to wonder about Dan Jurgens.

Case in point #2: Thor Vol.2 #30. The Avengers are in the midst of a party in an intergalactic bar. Starfox is chatting to an alien with two mouths, two pairs of legs, two pairs of arms, etc. He says, "Two? of EVERYTHING?" If it was, say Quasar, saying this (he is behind Starfox), then I'd consider it innocent. But Starfox, real name Eros, famed 'swordsman'? Nah. Danny-boy, you have a filthy mind!

jimbob said...

Got Wasp, the figurine I was so happy about getting done. And a huge disappointment.

All because of the wig hairstyle!

If EM could't pull the pixie hairstyle off, then they should have asked us if we wanted the classic version of her.

Think I will sell Wasp or put her in the draw, leave her on my shelf for a bit and see.

Robert said...

I'm not that unhappy with Wasp, though I'll admit the hairstyle isn't all that great. Thing is, Eaglemoss don't have a great track record with female sculpts. They don't seem to be getting any better, either, as the upcoming Marvel Girl demonstrates. So, being honest, how many female sculpts are you are happy with, guys?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Er....i like Donna Troy and Star Fire they are both lovely sculpts..of the CMFC females i have hopes that Typhoid Mary will be awesome she's not meant to be a "looker" which is probably just as well.
Although i have to say i quite like the Wasp fig, I'll leave it to you butch types to fret over her fringe :) And for what it's worth clear resin wings would have been a lovely touch

Robert said...

On the subject of women, a friend coincidentally sent me a sexist text today. Apologies if you've heard it.

Q: What's the difference between Iron Man and Iron Woman?"

A: The first is a superhero, the second is an instruction.

(Yes, I realise that, strictly speaking, the joke only works verbally. You need a vocative comma to write an instruction: e.g., "Iron, woman!")

SinisterVenom said...

I was pleased with the Enchantress and Jubilee figs and the upcoming Spiral looks amazing too. I do agree that there aren't many females that stand out in the collection, something EM should concentrate on when making more ladies.
Personally I think Mystique would have looked great too if she was done in her white dress. I'm not too bothered about her now after having her for so long but will still always think that.

Marie Severin , now theres a lady, Absolutely wonderful artist, she drew stunning superhero stuff and was a master of gag strips.
Amazes and dismays me that she didn't inspire more female artists

Can't remember exact issue numbers, but my favourite Marie Severin art was from inking Jef Purves on the Hulk for about a year (c. #350s) and pencilling (I think) a couple of Spidey issues around 1981. A story about Belladonna and the Prowler, I believe.
