Sneak Peeks

To make things a bit easier I’ve decided to keep the competition details on a separate strand to this week’s sneak peeks.

So without further to do here are two new figurines:

Silver Sable and Radioactive Man.

I can also let you know that Radioactive Man has been given a special paint that makes him fluorescent/glow-in-the-dark.

RADIOACTIVEMAN IS SUBLIME : BRAVO AT THE ARTIST . SILVER SABLE IS SUBLIME TOO , BUT MY FAVORITE IS RADIOACTIVEMAN : THANKS

Wow!

Silver Sable and Radioactive Man both look great. I prefer RM's look from Thunderbolt's myself, but this should make classic fans of him happy. Plus it allows for more visable space for the glow paint. Hopefully it works, and doesn't look cheap.

Heeey finally sneak peeks of Silver Sable and Radioactive Man! They look great and I can't wait to add them to my collection. Radioactive Man will definately be near my light, looking forward to seeing him glow in the dark.

Now , I'm going back to the competition
Thanks Richard

Both are brilliant figurines :) Really like that Radioactive Man has the glowing paint, a great touch! Top work once again!!

Luminous Radioactive Man? That was my idea! He's wonderful. Congrats EM. A stunner. Now for a glowing Dead Man over on the DC collection.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Radioactive man is absolutely stunning , you have outdone youselves with that little masterpiece, Sable is fair enough , but i'm not convinced with her fisog. I believe the young lady is meant to be attractive?

Gremlin said...

Well done on both figures. Both are great sculpts and I like the luminous paint on RM.

Both are great well done EM!

Awesome idea for the comp, and also LOVING the previews in the post below. I have been having an issue in finding the right thread to place this next section in as there havent really been many relevant threads since I considered the idea.

I am a massive Marvel fan, and Spiderman in particular is a massive favourite of mine - however I enjoy the old comic/cartoon characters from the 1994 fox tv show (I am 16 atm and have been brought up with them since I was 4)

I was just wondering would anybody other than me think that a MAN-SPIDER figure (Possibly a Special due to the size) be an awesome addition to the collection?

Also I loved the Kingpin sculpt however I feel he looks bare on the collection stand without his "Transformed" Side Kick, Alistar Smyth. I think he would also look EPIC and with the artists behind the collection, could have an AMAZING sculpt and would be a lot of fun.

Let me know guy what you think of my ideas, be as synical as you want - and if possible I would love to hear from yourself Rich as to any indication into whether these are possibilities?

Big Comment and a lot to read but I just want to refer back to a point at the begining Silver Sable and Radioactive Man are looking SICK!

(Sorry for the repetative comment - I just want to see what people think :D)

Robert said...

Radioactive Man looks great. Really pleased that you've gone with the luminous paint idea, Rich. Great work. (Congrats to MGF for suggesting this. I thought it was Thor8, but obviously my memory is playing up again.)

mgf said...

There used to be a forum and I had both luminous Radioactive Man & Dead Man on my signature three or four years back. Perhaps Thor8 beat me to it later.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I was the first to suggest it in a letter to Santa post date 15.12.77
So was the comp to simp or a realistic way to include all collectors?
The main thing that screamed out at me on Rich's update was the fact that we had a grand total of 127 entries for the last comp. What happened to the mythical 2000 members of the forum?
My verification code may or may not be bawllocks!

Robert said...

Ah, that explains my mistake, MGF: I'm not on the forum and so the first time I heard the idea was on here. Congratulations again for a great idea.

I was also surprised by the fact there was only 127 entries, ted. Wonder why so many people didn't bother? Anyway, if similar numbers enter this competition then the odds of winning are much better than I imagined! So, now that classic Captain Britain and classic Iron Man have been bombed out - spoilsports - it may just have to be the Recorder.

Two questions, guys.

1. Anyone else have to wait an extra week for Annihulus? The Glasgow FP delivery is delayed.

2. Has anyone worked out the month and year when the latest extension will end? I'm curious.

Josh, i would love a man-spider, i have been longing for that for ages.

Nice sculpts. Silver Sable could use work on the face/head area. Radioactive Man is great and awesome paint choice. Cant wait to see him. :)

RADIOACTIVE MAN is a masterpiece! I love it when the so-called 'minor
characters' get this treatment and go on to prove that they can be just as awesome as Marvel's A-listers and superstars.

CHARACTER DESIGN & CONCEPT MATTERS
Because this is a collection of figurines, and not a series of comics to experience as narrative, my personal approach to the EM collection is that I often value the character's concept, costume design and physical features more than anything else. Which is why I would also love to see figurines of 'minor' characters like YOUNDU, GABRIEL THE AIRWALKER, DOCTOR SPECTRUM, MAKKARI or SLEEPWALKER. I find them visually stunning, and I know they'd make superb figurines. Well, that's my approach, folks.

I saw a Dr Spectrum custom on some forum and it was fabulous, Also any celestial that made it into this collection would be a must buy for me Jemiah The Analyzer being my personal fav.
Let's face it pretty much every Marvel fan must have a Jemiah T shirt ... am i right or wot?

AMAZING FIGURINES!!!

Today I was starrying my collection and noted two more heroes that, besides Captain Britain and Cable, may need a redo: Captain America and Elektra.

Those news statues are sooo breaking my head!!!

John said...

Radioactive Man looks SOOO good. He's going right next to Songbird, Beetle, and Fixer when he's announced.

Josh, I wouldn't want a remake of a character already in the collection. If we had to get a new Spider-Man, I'd rather it be a Spidey from a different dimension, that way at least its a new character with their own history. I think 2099 has the most support.

But I AM fully on board with Alystar Smythe. Not transformed of course, but just regular Smythe with his mullet. There was an issue around the Mackie era (I know, I know) after his spine was fixed, where he was just standing there covered in little robot spiders. I'd like that please. :D He looked sooo creepy, torturing JJJ.

I'm with Kirly on Sleepwalker. He would make an absolutely stunning figurine. Which reminds me... he's not really worthy of a figurine (with so many other Spidey characters in line) but wouldn't a figurine of Leap-Frog look fantastic? Just visually, I mean..

Robert said...

If memory serves, SV, Sable tosses them at villains. They're like Moon Knight's crescent moons or Batman's baterangs.

Robert said...

Went off and checked, SV, and Marvel wiki says they are chai, or three-pronged throwing projectiles.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Eh,just about to send in my comp entry when i paused. I'm not by nature a pauser...Not doubting the identity of the comp figs.. no i'm actually considering another choice in the event of me winning... Never saw that coming,me ponder long time

Josh said...

Hey guys, just to raise the point. When I say Man-Spider, I dont mean a remake of Spiderman, however I mean a completely new figure when Spiderman has mutated into the big hairy, 8 eyes, 8 limbed Spidery thing. It's really hard to find an image of him on google for people who may be unsure - but he was included in the 1994 cartoons in the Neogenic Nightmares section, He does look awesome and would make an incredible figure.

http://marvelanimated.wikia.com/wiki/Spider-Man

here is a link I did find however with Man-Spider on. If you scroll down to "Alternate Versions" and then "Mutations" there is a small image there.

SinisterVenom said...

Here Josh, another pic of Man-Spider

SV

Robert said...

Not to rain on your parade or anything, Josh, but I think Man-Spider would still come under Peter Parker/ Spider-Man, albeit in a horribly mutated and unrecognisable form. Basically, as yet we don't have different costumes, armours or otherwise altered incarnations of a character who has already featured. And we're not allowed to choose one for the competition, either.

Robert said...

SV, just scrolled past the ealier posts and saw the word "chai". I didn't know if the word meant something or was invented, so I googled it and I got a very interesting explanation. Anyone else who, like me, knows next to nothing about SS might find it interesting, too...

" If it wisnae fur yer wellies where would you be, you'd be in the hospital or infirmary"
Ah love some superhero wellie wear.
Taskmaster sports a superb example of the turned over wellie.
But Radioacter man takes it to a whole new level , Massive respect fur the big wellies Rich!
Is any body going to share thier comp picks? Or are you scared it will predjidice your chances of winning :)
Bloodstone! yeah and i don't care who knows!!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

predjidice?

Robert said...

"Wellies"? They look like pirate boots to me. I guess we should check with Adam. If anyone'll know, he's the man.

Haven't entered the comp yet, Ted, so haven't settled finally on the Recorder. Obviously the first image is the Juggernaut. (Think about it: it's a no stopping sign, albeit slightly uncorrectly coloured to throw us off. 'No stopping' immediately makes us think of the old adage that "NOthing can STOP the Juggernaut!" So, that one's easy. Likewise, image two. The third one is trickier and I'm still thinking about it...)

Robert said...

God, now I'm at it. Of course, "uncorrectly" should be 'incorrectly'.

BobDiamond said...

I swear I'm becoming more geeky by the minute (my wife certainly thinks so when I showed her this competition that we're all entering...)
Still, I've got to say, I thoroughly enjoyed re-examining my figs(oo-er)and getting completely frustrated when I realized just how similar some of those details are...all good fun!
Ted, if I win, I've decided to plump for Killraven!
I love his design, and he's basically a stand alone figure.
Back to the geeky thing...Over on the OTHER forum there's a thread called SHFF Battle Royale. It's some kind of game that is about to kick off once they've got enough teams.
You need to make a team of 6 characters from the standard figs that have been produced so far, give'em a team name and even a battle-cry if you want!.....anyway it looks kind of fun, so I've gone in for it (though I don't know what happens next yet...)
Robert, Ted, SV, Leigh -I think all you guys should have a go!!

Cheers for now!

Ah Bob , Killraven would please me as much as Bloodstone , Just need some auld timers to nominate Omega the Unknown and Werewolve by night . Not forgetting the Human Fly of course... on second thoughts he is probably best forgotten :)
Your right Robert, Radioactive Man is sporting a pair of pirate booties , That footwear always reminds me of " Compo" from last of the summer wine in his turned over wellies.

Robert said...

"Jane Foster"!?! Gee, when was the last time you bought an issue of Thor, Ted? 1973? She hasn't been a love interest for donkey's. She still appears now and then, although she's a doctor, now. And married. Or at least she was. To a Dr. Kincaid, I believe.

Robert said...

Just popped over to Marvel wiki. Not much on her but I was mostly right. She divorced Dr. Kincaid and has a child.

Slightly relieved that my memory isn't quite as bad as normal...

Bagman said...

KILLRAVEN-- good choice BobDiamond,he only managed 3 votes in the poll,so it would be a long time before he's even considered. I'm just hoping if you win that it'll be classic Killraven and not the Mankini look -- Borat with a sword ---

My own choice would be YONDU, because i think VANCE ASTRO may make it into the next extension.

Good Luck to everybody in the competition.

LAWay said...

Havent been able to enter the competition because my marvel figurine collection is still at my home while I moved out. dammit.

Radioactive Man is hardly a minor character. He plays with the big boys in one of the biggest super teams in marvel and has done so for years. not only is he pretty big...but also on trend.

Spiderman 2099 isnt just peter parker in a different dimension, its a whole different character with different history and needs to be made in his own right.

While I would love Man-Spider, I cant see it ever happening. Unless we did have a hulkbuster iron man, a world war hulk, a giant man...you know, big specials of characters already done. I would love it, but I know so many people resent the idea.

At the end of the day, lets celebrate marvel. If great characters are running dry to make special figurines, why not go back and redo a few, especially if they were to look fantastic with these new modern sculpts.

LAWay, I meant to throw in my 2 cents on this a while ago. You asked about moving your collection to your new place.

I'd leave it at your parents' for now. I recently had to move Back in with my parents' when my school cut the art program... and transporting all those figurines is nerve racking. ...every bump in the road... every sharp turn... Or just the chance to drop them between shelf and car. What I'd do is make absolutely sure that the place you're at is where you're going to be for a long long time first. If you know you'll be there 5+ years, go for it. Otherwise, just pull over your favorites.

LAWay said...

Cheers John.
Yeh, thats what I thought. Keep them safe at home until I know I'm here permanently. Makes it good coming home to find my marvel package though. :)

Robert said...

I keep the plastic boxes for the figurines in a large tub in the loft eaves. But then I have space to do that now, whereas I didn't for the first few years of collecting the figures.

On the subject of moving, the last time I moved house (and hopefully it really is the last time), I had forty-two boxes of comics.

Needless to say, I've bought more since then.

SASQUATCH & PUCK ... LIGHTWEIGHTS!
I just got them today, and they're awesome sculpts. I love them.
Just one thing: the Sasquatch figure is not cast in a full bulk of lead, it's hollow inside so it's very light. I would say that the combined weight of Sasquatch & Puck is less than that of Ronan alone.

Of course I don't usually judge the beauty of a figure by its weight like I would a Christmas turkey, for example. However, for some strange reason, a part of me
keeps wishing that this Sasquatch sculpt were a full-weight bulk.
But hey, I'm happy if this method allows EM to produce the bigger Marvel characters.

PS. What happened to Ronan's cape? I hope it was not excluded for reasons of weight. I would have been happy to pay a bit more to get a caped version.

Anonymous said...

ANNIHILUS... BEAUTIFULUS!
Got him today. Stunning sculpt and excellent paint job. Brilliant pose and facial expression. Awesome wings. Easily one of the best villains in the collection. The magazine is also superb. Beautiful art, gorgeous panels by Kirby and Buscema. And the article by Nick Abadzis is excellent. We often neglect to praise the mag writers, who do an amazing job.
I want to praise Nick's insight into Marvel characters. His articles are always compelling, veritable studies on the Marvel Universe mythos. Great stuff indeed.

MADE OF RESIN
OK, I visited the forum and found out that Sasquatch is in fact made in resin, not lead. I am not sure that I like this choice of material or that I want to see it more often in future. It gives a strange feeling, almost as if the figurine is part of another collection. But I would be really happy if resin could be used to create figures in multi-packs, (eg. The Warrior Three) at a reasonable, viable retail price.

BobDiamond said...

Hi Kirlian Eyes, you know you are a bit like a bus...don't see you for ages, then three come at once! :)
I'm looking forward to the Sasquatch/ Puck pack, especially as this 'resin' issue seems to be causing a lot of discussion over on the OTHER Forum.
I'm wondering if EM will be allowed to have the 'cast in lead' logo-thing on the mags, if the figs are not even 1/2 lead?...
I've just had a quick look at some of the recent mags, and actually the stamp isn't on all of them. Cloak and Dagger don't have it, strangely X-Man doesn't have it either..but Grim Reaper does. Odd.

BD

Gremlin said...

I honestly don't mind they are not lead. The only thing I am concerned with is if the resin figures are of the same standard as the lead. If I cannot tell the difference then I say bring it on. If it means EM can continue to other extensions and get us the likes of Mantis, Fixer, Groot, Marrow and Warlock in then awesome.
After all I don't handle the figures very often and I know my shelves will heave a sigh of relief at the thought of lighter sculpts.

Robert said...

Things you don't say every day: I had to leave early for work today because of the Pope.

Whew. Thought today would be a traffic nightmare as hundreds of streets in Edinburgh and Glasgow are closed, some of them between me and FP. However, this story has a happy ending and I finally have Annihulus.

He looks great but I can't make my mind up whether I would have preferred him facing directly ahead. What do you guys think? At least my FF villains shelf is now more populated. Roll on Puppet Master and Wizard! And if we get Trapster, I can make the Frightful Four!

All I would need then is a Baxter Building... now, there's a thought...

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Fully understand the financial thinking behind resin being used.Galactus must have cost EM at least £3 or £4 just to post to it's subscribers.
Hope we don't see it taking over the regular figs too, as lovely as they look , I signed up to a lead figurine collection, I don't fondle my figs much either but the reassuring weight of a lead fig is far nicer than the Kinder egg feel of resin

jimbob said...

I hope Blob special will be lead.

And not the stuff Sasquatch special is made out of.

Dont mind paying more.

LAWay said...

A resin sasquatch? Doesnt this go against what EM are licensed to do...sell a lead collection? I dunno.

I noticed the resin head and cape on grim reaper. I dont mind if its lighter and saves money for them...but if it saves money for them it should save money for us.

This Sasquatch and Puck should be a cheaper special if he is indeed hollowed out resin. And if this is the future of the collection, I really dont mind as long as the quality remains high. And if resin is alot cheaper to produce, bring down the pricing, if not regulars, at least specials.

jimbob said...

EM should charge us more and make everything out of lead again.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I will wait until i actualy recieve my Sasquatch /Puck Combo, But if they are hollowed out resin ( just like all those classy garden novelties in Supersave ) They should weigh a fraction of the lead version, Therefor i should imagine it to be around an £11.00 or £12.00 pricepoint.
Don't like the way way all this resin crap is taking over the collection. Charge us a quid more for regulars and give us back the lead.
Y'know... the lead figurine collection i signed up for?

jimbob said...

Resin can look tacky on small figurines, like the ones you see in poundland and charity shops.

I know Bowen is resin, but that's been made on a bigger scale.

Im not happy that Sasquatch is resin and Kilwog from DC collection is lead!

We will just have to wait and see:(

John said...

"EM should charge us more and make everything out of lead again."

If it really came to raising the price, I'd rather they just switch to resin altogether... I'm spending too much as it is, and Sasquatch looks amazing.

John said...

SinisterVenom said...

Well I do recall when this collection first started that all figures were to be made in lead d that was what we were guaranteed. So why now has it begun to change? Does EM want to put people off the idea of collecting figures?
Come on guys, stick with what you originally planned to give us please?
We all know the infamous saying: Make Mine Marvel! Well now I'm going to say: Make Mine Lead!
SV

jimbob said...

Could'nt EM have made Puck resin instead of Sasquatch??

Sasquatch is too big a character not to give him the lead treatment.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

The plinths should be the only part of this collection to be made from resin . I am tempted to apply paintstripper to my Grim Reaper fig just to see if there is any lead in it at all

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hey EM ,why not make the bases from paper mache and cow spit? That would save you a tidy amount, Perhaps instead of a magazine you could write a potted history of the character on a cornflake .
Or you could stop wasting money sending out specials with completely useless cardboard sleeves.
If this collection had started out as a resin/Mc Donalds happy meal toy type collection . I never would have subscribed

RESIN - THE PROS AND CONS
The debate continues to rage both here and on the forum. But hey,
let's keep things in perspective, folks. Sasquatch looks great even if it's cast in resin. Resin is not a 'tacky' or 'cheap' material per se. It can be used for highly artistic results, as in the much celebrated Bowen sculpts, for example.

I know the character has many fans, and I'm assuming that it would have been impossible to keep the price of the Sasquatch & Puck special below £20. I'm sure there will be an official explanation as to why it could not be cast in lead. However I do feel that EM
had ample opportunities, all missed, to announce that it was going to be in resin and get feedback from this blog and the forum. I wonder how many collectors would have expressed a preference for a Sasquatch alone but cast in lead?

RESIN AND THE FUTURE
I would like EM to be very clear about their plans to use resin.
If, for example, it transpires that big characters can only be in resin, then I guess we'll have to embrace that - or else we won't get the big characters at all.

I'M A SUPPORTER OF RESIN IF:
1. used to produce capes for characters who would otherwise be excluded from the collection.
2. used to obtain elaborate details, gadgets and weapons of the characters. For example, look at the beautiful wings of Gabriel the Airwalker in the Bowen bust.
3. used to produce multi-packs including up to 3 characters such as the Warriors Three, for viable/ reasonable retail price, so long as there is a good ratio of lead and resin.
4. absolutley necessary to keep the collection going. If this financial reason became a reality, then I'd be happy to accept more resin, so long as the collection can continue for another 100, 300, 500 issues. There are at least 500 characters I want and will buy.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Just got my subby pack Annihilus is a wonder to behold even with resin wings, Heck i was even glad to have Drax as ugly a sod as he is at, least he's all lead :)
Rich explained months ago about the weight issues concerning caped characters, I have no problem with resin being used in these circumstances, What i am concerned about is " resin-creep" There seems to more resin parts to Grim Reaper than just his cape?
And when the hell were we going to be told a £20 resin squirrel was being produced.
There is no mention of it in my option letter.
(£18.00 for a subby), This will be the first time i have ever returned an option letter

Robert said...

If they use resin - which I assume is cheaper to use and lighter, i.e., cheaper to send - could that perhaps mean we could see a relaxing of the criteria for inclusion as a regular? In other words, skinny but tall characters lie Sauron could be produced as a regular? And is it easier to produce intricate designs in resin, or is it just the same as lead in that respect? Over and above cost issues, the use of resin may have other implications we (well, maybe just me) are not aware of.

mgf said...

I'm not *too* concerned about the resin thing if it keeps the collection going. That's really the only thing that matters. It might have been classier for EM to mention that Sasquatch would not be what we were "lead" to believe though.

If costs are not cut and the choices made continue to slide further into dumb as a post X territory something will have to give if the collection is to survive to issue 300.

Unfortunately we will also have to try to keep the non-collectors who know very little about the MU on board, even if they buy just two or three figures per extension more than the old woman who lives next door, and if that means resin then so be it.

Annihilus arrived today and is simply wonderful, but Drax... Sigh. The 12 year olds will love him I suppose, but it's the wrong choice of costume which I believe has changed once more since the decision to go with the inter-galactic slacks look. Awful. Awful. Awful.

LAWay said...

I dont see why Sasquatch needed to be resin. There have been bigger figurines in lead for cheaper. Puck surely didnt cost £7 to make, and I dont think Sasquatch warrants a £13 pricetag. Even if Sasquatch himself is £15...in lead, Puck isnt £5.

So where the heck is £20 plucked from...and then the lead being stripped from the figurine?

With the resin Sasquatch, the price should be hammered down.

And the price tag of lead shouldnt go up. Just because DC is £1 more expensive. Big deal. The sculpts have been better, they have been bulkier more dynamic figurines. I hardly doubt £1 makes a difference to profits...as if EM as losing money because of £1 per sale. If they are working that close to getting a profit and that £1 really made a difference, this collection is in bigger problems than we think...and resin isn't the solution.

Barnabas said...

Interesting pros and cons for lead Vs resin.
This collection has been going for a few years now and has held its price for all that time. I cannot think of any other magazine (except for the DC figures) that have held their price. We had the magazine cut because of spiralling costs, which, at that point, didn't affect the figures. Now with the costs of materials on the increase 'alternatives' are being used to keep this collection going. Yes the price could go up, but I imagine it's a fine line at which point collectors start being priced out.

Barnabas

jimbob said...

I guess EM should stay the same lead and price then.

Not to single out the serious collectors that dond'nt like change, and those who cant afford this collection.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

"It would have been classier for EM to mention Sasquatch would not be what we were "lead" to believe"
That make me laff :)
The one thing above all else that annoys me about the resin Sasqwitch
is the fact that in the same week DC collectors are being treated to one of the best sculpts ever Kilowog is huge and all lead.
Has market research found DC collector's have more disposble income that the poor shmuks that collect Marvel?

I was looking forward to completeting Alpha Flight, but with Sasquatch resin special i almost dont care right now!

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I fear the writing is well and truly on the wall as far as lead is concerned. The resin takeover will be complete by this time next year.
I know a great many collectors seem quite amenable to resin being the "saviour" of the collection, But my OCD means i cannot see me subscribing to an all( or mostly) resin collection.
I am a part time geek, if it wasn't for this collection , then pretty much my only Marvel interest would come from the odd page of artwork or marvel T-shirt at xmas or Maybe even the odd tpb wooo!
Lot's of you are used to resin or plastic through Warhammer , Marvel Legends, Heroclix and other such stuff. But they are toys and of no interest to me whatsoever,
A couple o birthdays ago the wife bought me a Marvel Zombies hardback and a Colonel America figurine, 68 points of articulation etc,etc It resides in my sons toybox locked in combat with a blue and a gold Power ranger because it's a TOY.
150 mini bowen busts on display might sound like a geek wet dream
but to me that would be totaly impracticle .
Nope this little lead collection satisfied all my nostalgia/ geek needs quite nicely .
Maybe i'm wallowing in said nostalgia but lead figurines were always a source of pride and no little jealousy when i was a nipper. And an inherant sign of quality.
When i pick up one of these bastardised resin/lead figs my heart sinks at the the cheap
feel, I know the sculpt and paintwork will still be of the highest quality but for me this will all be negated by the cheap feel of the materials used to produce them.
I am no doubt in a tiny minority on this, but i signed up to a lead figurine collection. I swear on a pile of Gene Colan original pages i never would have given the collection a second glance if it had started out in resin.

Ted sed: "Has market research found DC collector's have more disposble income that the poor shmuks that collect Marvel?"

I bet the Marvel collection skews a lot younger than the DC, and that almost certainly means the collectors of the latter have more disposable income. Of course, the other thing to remember is that the DC is a quid more so perhaps that has some small impact.

I think this collection, which should really storm easily towards 300 issues may well falter around 240. Partly this may be because of the economy but also an increasingly aggressive yet small group of semi-collectors who only wish to see newer characters and will not buy others under any circumstances. They are an immense danger to the continuation of the collection in my opinion, as all parasites are to their hosts.

They certainly seem to hold sway over the forum these days, where the many truly great posters seem to have gifted the boards to two or three new members who appear to have power beyond that of rank and file members and can do as they wish, including being given carte blanche to insult other members in a most insolent and cretinous manner while the moderating team made light of it. The forum died that day to all intents and purposes.

Now, of course it is their prerogative to buy as many or as few as they care to, but they should not have equal power to affect the future of the collection over those who support it fully.

For a long time there seemed to be a broad unspoken concensus that we bought all the figures and we all benefitted by it. That, sadly, is no longer the case and the cheapskates seem, for some strange reason, to be being listened to by EM more than the core customer base.

In any business that would be a recipe for disaster. In one which is so clearly a luxury and very niche market it is quite likely to be a complete catastrophe.

So why would it not be possible to offer a resin version and a lead version of large specials such as Sasquatch?

jimbob said...

What about limeted edition lead Sasquatch special for us serious collectors?

LAWay said...

To make it clear on all the hating...

I generally dont care about the resin lead debate. lol

What I care about is the price. Lead is expensive, granted. If you are making resin figurines, dont charge me prices for the lead versions. If you are going for resin, knock your prices down and dont lie to us.

Sure, the collection was stated as being lead. I thought thats all you were legally allowed to produce with your distribution deal. What does this mean? Is this your super secret you have been excited to tell us?

Like I said, I dont mind resin...but alot of people do. So...good chance as any to restart the entire collection back to square 1 with the official 'Marvel Resin Collection!'

I'm on board as long as they look good. Just dont pull our legs with these prices.

There's a lot of downright wrong information being thrown around in regard to Sasquatch being Resin. So here's some education on the matter.

1. The Price - People keep saying that Eaglemoss should have passed along the savings with the move to resin for Sasquatch. Well, here's a clue. They have been not passing along the massive price increases to you for a long time. Anyone who deals with having stuff produced oversees know that material and labor have shot up. And it's now a lot more expensive to produce the figurines and keep the price down. It's not like Eaglemoss is making a massive windfall here. Sassy and Puck is still a huge set for a fairly respectable price in the end.

2. Resin - Resin is not in anyway, shape, or form an inferior material to lead. In fact, ask any sculptor... resin retains more detail than something like lead does when you move to mass production. So you're certainly not getting a cheaper quality product out of this decision. And unless you think you might one day need the collection to melt down for bullets for to survive the Zombie Apocalypse, the material shouldn't really matter in the end. The quality is still there, and that is what matters.

3. The Weight - Yes, Sasquatch isn't going to be as heavy as most of the huge pieces. But unless you're planning to blugeon someone to death with it, you're not really at a loss. Given the postage rates, I can imagine that Eaglemoss would like to cut costs somwhere that doesn't impact the figures themselves. So another plus in that regard.

Final Comments - People are really overreacting here. There have already been pieces that used resin to help keep costs down but keep the quality up. Plus Resin allows for Eaglemoss to do stuff they couldn't do or do easily in lead. Modok's rocket exhaust and chair can be resin. Mojo's chair, legs, and tail can be resin. Groot can be Resin, allowing a Groot/Rocket Raccoon 2-Pack.

Hell, we can finally see figurines of Armor, Shadow King (Astral), and maybe even the original Human Torch at some point. Using clear and colored resins is gonna allow for a lot more freedom in the collection at some point. Maybe we can even get Terrax on his astroid. :)

"The one thing above all else that annoys me about the resin Sasqwitch
is the fact that in the same week DC collectors are being treated to one of the best sculpts ever Kilowog is huge and all lead."

Here's a clue. Does Kilowog come with an entire second figurine included with him? G'nort or Ch'p? What? He doesn't!? In a collection that is already more expensive than the Marvel one. Gasp!

Barnabas said...

Thanks Beast for fleshing out what I was trying to say about costs in my earlier post.
I for one, welcome the extra flexability resin can offer. I'm also a fan of the more dramatic poses as they can reflect more of a characters personality/powers. I know that doesn't sit well with some collectors, but that is my opinion. I quite like the idea of the original human torch with a long and curled fire trail behind him. And if I remember correctly, wasn't there a call for resin to be used for a better version of the invisible woman back sometime in the distant past?

Still, it's whatever floats your boat.

Resin may well be a sculpters wet dream, That's not my point EM released a lead figurine collection with "cast in lead emblazened on the cover for the last 5 years . It was no accident that in the boardroom they went with lead it's not like they pulled the material out of thin air " ehm so lads the choices are soap, cheese or lead"
EM's market research must have tested the water regarding customers reactions to other materials,
Otherwise surely the sculptors would have been kicking Rich's door down pleading the case for resin.
I also said this was purely a personal opinion, Most of you are well used to fondling resin figs and are perfectly cool with them, that's fine .
To cheer myself up i may just sell the resin squirrell onto to some mouthy yank on ebay + £30.00 postage natch

jimbob said...

Resin makes it too easy for all the effects EM can do with it,the skills that are involved in lead is worth the buy for me.

Resin will take all this away from the figurines.

jimbob said...

And how about completeing the teams we have in lead,

Alpha Flight

Brotherhood(original)

Defenders

X-Factor/Forc

Inhumans(Lockjaw)

and then you can do the rest in resin,

Young Avengers

Starjammers

etc....

i think thats fair enough on us who still want lead and have spent over £1000 on this collection so far.

DC is so lucky to have Kilowog super special in lead and not resin!!!:(

Anonymous said...

"And how about completeing the teams we have in lead..."

Why? Unless the character is as big as Sasquatch being packed with a 2nd character, I doubt we'll see resin used for an entire character that often. Rocket Raccoon and Groot 2-Pack? Sure, make Groot in Resin. Hell, make Lockjaw in Resin and pack him with Luna even. I'm up for that. I also wouldn't object to Dragon Man for instance, utilizing resin, if even for the wings.

"i think thats fair enough on us who still want lead and have spent over £1000 on this collection so far."

Fair? Please. It also doesn't matter how much you have spent on the collection. It's a choice that EM needed to make to even be able to make Sasquatch for those that wanted him. So crying that it was unfair makes no sense what so ever. Tossing around how much you've spent as if it entitles you to anything is also pretty silly.

"DC is so lucky to have Kilowog super special in lead and not resin!!!:("

Yeah, they're so lucky to already have to pay $2.00 more per basic figurine, more per special, and got one figure for nearly $40.00 rather than the two that the Marvel fans got. Plus it doesn't look like DC is gonna get 2-Packs anytime soon. Which is a shame.

Also..
"Resin makes it too easy for all the effects EM can do with it,the skills that are involved in lead is worth the buy for me.

Resin will take all this away from the figurines."

This argument makes no sense. The only thing that Resin brings to the game from an artistic standpoint is the ability to do clear or colored pieces. Which in cases like Mr. Freeze, is the only way to do the character. And your other comment above about resin making things to easy? Really? It still requires the figure to be sculpted. It doesn't take away from the artistic side of things. In fact, it enhances them.

jimbob said...

This can go back and forth all day.Pros and Cons

EM could open a poll on the forum ask us which we prefer.

Or they can come to their senses and go DC way.

LEAD!!!!!!:)

Anonymous said...

The DC figurines are utilizing resin also. So you're argument has no weight.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I would think the fact that jimbob has forked out over £1000 does entitle him to complain about EM's handling of this
The odd resin cape to keep the weight down in the regular line up is one thing, making a large special with no lead in it at all, without bothering to mention it to the 8000 or so subbies is another thing altogether
DC collectors do indeed pay £1 more per fig but they are larger, and of a noticeably higher standard than their Marvel equivilants.
Nothing to do with the pros and cons of resin. EM are taking the piss sending out a £19.00 resin squirrel ( albeit with a tiny lead midget) with no prior warning

jimbob said...

The collection is going good no?

Put the price up match DC collection.

Don't weaken the ingredient to make it cheaper.

£6.99 doesn't seem to be harming the DC collection, extension confirmed as well, and so far the DC lead figurines have been top quality sculpting from EM.

This is the lead collection not the resin collection!:)

Robert said...

Reading through the lead-resin debate I have to admit I'm not too fussed. As long as the collection continues, that I get to see the characters I like in the incarnations I prefer, it's not a big deal. If the collection had started with all-resin sculpts it would not have made any difference to me. As for weight, I don't handle the figures except to re-arrange them into teams, etc., and that's pretty rare. So what I am most worried about is 1) the choice of character, 2) the costume/incarnation, 3)pose and then 4) quality of the sculpt. Weigh is not really a concern.

The only questions I have are based on my ignorance of these materials. As long as resin can reproduce the high-quality of the sculpting I'm fine. If it can improve the detailing of a character, and offer effects like CBR Beast has mentioned, then why not use resin?

And, before I forget to mention it, Sasquatch and Puck do look pretty damn great. Looking forward to completing the Alpha Flight team (or at least the original line-up)...

BobDiamond said...

The latest 'resin vs lead' debate has been both highly charged and very entertaining (if that's the right word) to read guys....
Ultimately however I am very much in agreement with what Robert said. As long as the visual quality doesn't deteriorate, then I'm happy for resin to be used when needed. One of the reasons I had that mini-disaster with my acrylic stepped-shelves a month or two back, was due to the weight of some of the figs. If resin can enable me to display more freely, then I'm happy with it.
Another slight advantage with resin is that it's probably a lot easier to mend breakages with super-glue than lead! (I had a b***er of a time mending Hawkman after my 'event' happened).
I do feel for you guys who want pure lead though, 'cos that is how the whole thing was promoted in the first place...
I think EM need to give some feed-back on the whole deal, it's only right at this point in time.

There is another thread you know... the competition thread.

Maybe you should continue the debate there.

Personally I am happy with the EM decision to go with resin.
It allows them to produce larger models with the same quality of detail at a reaonable price.

I will be buying two of the Sasquatch / Puck specials.

Having been a modeller for at least 30 years, working with various mediums, my only reservation with resin is that it can be a little brittle.

I like the weight of lead and would prefer that all standard figures continue to be done in lead.

Deadpool said...

Special effects.

Resin allows for transparency, vibrant colours that are flourescent or even translucency.

A pity all of you that choose to miss out on Sasquatch because he isnt lead.

From what I can see Sasquatch is a very good figure and is essential for my Alpha flight team.

Your knowledge of materials and sculpting is obviously very extensive, and i believe you when you talk about the fantastic effects that can be achieved with resin,
What really struck me about your support for resin was that not once did you find it necessary to mock, deride or downright insult anyone who held another view. That my boy is a sign of class. A word some of the more mouthy contributors would struggle to spell. Get well soon snakehips.

Great stuff can be achieved with resin as had been pointed out. I don't think it signals the end of the line for normal figures being made in lead, but it does open the door for some cracking big figures, stature, giant man etc......
And as I said before, as this collection is evolving with more dramatic poses, I for one welcome the mix of materials.

Now as for Deadpool and his many injuries, perhaps we should start a new comp. Guess DP's Occupation!
I think he juggles with chainsaw juggling ferrets!

I don't think the quality is in question at all in lead or resin that would still be there. What it comes down to is the cost. I've not seen Sassy as yet so I'm not sure of his relative size, but I imagine that he would take the same amount of lead as a super or mega special. That would push the price right up. As it stands now, I'm at my limit of what I can afford to pay for the figures, so would have to consider dropping some or all of the specials.

like i said, dont care whether its resin or lead, the price and quality is what matters.

I am no expert. I dont think anyone here is who can really debate why its a pro or con for sculptors or the financial benefits or situation of EM.

We get its cheaper. EM are telling us its cheaper. And thus the product should be cheaper. Thats the issue. For me anyway. I dont want to read EM making excuses and patting smugly saying resin is alot cheaper and benefits us yet still costs us the same as lead.

Although, being collectors...subscribers of the series for years, we do have every right to complain, moan, and question what is going on. So enough with the brown nosing here, we have unhappy customers, and the customer is always right. Imagine the subscribers at home who are not online, who do not know the situation, open up their sasquatch and realize its lighter and not the same material as other figurines. They will be peeved, confused etc.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Leigh, you absolutely spot on , If there are indeed around 8000 subbies ( i have never heard anyone dispute this approx number) then around 7800 of them will be picking up Sasquatch and thinking wha the fu ...?

mgf said...

EM should have mentioned the resin Sasquatch beforehand, and my guess is they kind of wish they had now. That is all water under the bridge.

Moving to resin - if that is indeed on the cards - is less about passing savings on to collectors and more about maintaining profit margins. I can't think of many things that have not had a price rise in five years, and to look on the positive side perhaps that is what EM are trying to shield us from. Perhaps they should bite the bullet (now made of resin presumably, or perhaps even paper and pig fat) and ask if we want lead figures and a price rise, or resin and a continued price freeze.

If that is what is needed to keep the collection going then that's what will have to happen. Some collectors will vote with their wallets and drop the collection and others will take the view that once on the shelf you can't tell which is made of what.

LAWay said...

speak of what you want about profit margins...i dont want to hear it.

Its blatant. We know its about making more money for EM, but if this is drastically the case, then shave a little price of the figurines. Our magazines have already paid the price. Show us some loyalty, even just a token gesture. What i dont want to see is:

"yeh, they're gonna be resin cos its cheaper. Deal with it and pay the same/more even though we are telling you they are not worth as much."

I dont mind it keeping the collection going. I have said this. But as for prices going up, in my experience, even at the time of recession, prices have crashed and come lower to try getting more sales. As technologies advance, it seems to be cheaper to make things.

Of course, we are all commenting on things we know nothing about and will never know unless they tell us. I dont expect they will. They're a business at the end of the day. Money comes first, and regardless of how many subscribers there are or how many figurines you own, as long as they more more profit they wont care.

A question to ask. Are profit margins tightening because things are getting more expensive to produce, or because they do not make enough sales on these lesser known characters to the general public and comic fan? If resin is being opted to make these figurines more cost efficient purely because sale expectations are low, then really the material isn't the issue is it?

Thats my final thought. You stay classy bloggers. ;)

Now....it's been a very long time since we've had a 'famous' BD Top Ten list...so I've thought of something a little different this time. All this 'Resingate' controversy, has got everyone anxious/ annoyed/ angry etc etc. But as some people have pointed out, there might be some advantages to resin being used occasionally/ sparingly and with originality.

So....here's my..
Top Ten Figures That Resin Could Enhance.
1. A transparent Invisible Woman variant.
2. Original Torch/ Toro sculpt with twisty flame effect.
3. MODOK.
4. Zzaxx.
5. Mojo.
6. Living Laser in energy form.
7. Cap Marvel(Monica) in energy form.
8. Transparent Iceman variant.
9. Eternity Special.
10 Transparent Ymir.

There must be quite a few others that a novel and artistic use of resin would enhance.
I'm by no means supporting a switch to resin, because I like the lead feel and weight, like most people. I'm just saying that it could be used occasionally to bring out the best effects for some of the characters.

For info, the bases of the marvel and DC figures is already resin.

I personally dont mind if there is some "resin creep".
The main objective is to keep the collection going at an affordable price that makes business sense to the miserly Moss Men.

Richard, it's time for the moss men to do a resin figure that demonstrates some of the effects that cannot be achieved using Lead.

For info the same sculpting process needs to be employed regardless if the figure is produced in lead or resin.

Brilliant post, Bob, about the possibilities of using resin. I thought your suggestions at creating new effects in the collection may be enough to overcome Ted's autism. Alas, t'were not to be. (Only kidding, Ted. ;) )

Deadpool's comment was succinct and spot on: "The main objective is to keep the collection going at an affordable price." If profits are squeezed more as time goes on the collection may be ended. Resin is a small concession if it ensures I get my mitts on the Recorder!

Deadpool, I was unfortunately unable to check out your Rogue figure but I jumped back on to say that a certain Mr Alpha would make an excellent figure. I proudly wear my large "SD" badge whenever I go out on my motorbike. Have been too busy to do any searching and destroying lately and haven't seen Middenface MacNulty since the Hampden game against France...

I agree with DP. The sculpting is never done in lead...its cast in lead. You say you like the feel and weight as if you are going to bludgeon people with it.

Resin would be great for bigger characters, vehicles, set pieces etc. Just cut the price if its cheaper. Lets see some ambition too, ghost rider with a bike is a must, and maybe some classic fights...hulk vs thing, two giant characters, in lightweight resin.

Giantman is a must too.
I'm not too fussed on gimmicky see-through characters as they do look cheap.

Ah Robert, You little Frankie Boyle wannabe , When i purchase Gene Colan art i am " mental"
And when i advocate lead in a lead figurine collection i am " autistic" I can hardly wait for the punchline big guy.
And Leigh wrote " You say you like the feel and weight as if you are going to bludgeon someone to death wih it " That shit line line wasn't funny the first time it was trotted out.
Time to post my comp answers for PA
Does that make me "spas?"

The only thing that lead cant do is the transparent effect like on invisible woman!

So i am not impressed by your list sorry Bob.

The only reason that resin is used now is to keep the cost down.

Not because of limited use:)

No problem Jimbob, I was only trying to lighten the mood.
To be frank, all this endless lead vs resin stuff is beginning to bore the c**p out of me. :)

Any chance EM can offer us a lead Sasquatch special as well as resin or do i have to get a custom lead one made???

Ted, it was a joke. Hence the comment "Just kidding" and the little winking emoticon.

And, for the record, "autistic" was not used as a term of abuse. I exhibit more than a few characteristics of autism myself, as I'm sure many people on here and the wider world do.

Ted : Wow DP, another great custom. Drax looks far better as Rogue Trooper.
Say DP do you like to listen to the guitar based music often referred to as ROCK , while you do your customs?
DP : " Yes, yes i do Ted, mainly Status Quo. Why do you ask Ted"
Ted : " No reason DP, It' just odd that you like MODS and ROCKERS!!!
BADDUM TISH!!
DP : " Nice one Ted"
Ted: " Thanks DP"
