Sorry for the lack of update last week, I was away in Hamburg on Wednesday cheering on Fulham FC and so had a lot of catching up to do on Friday.
A number of us (including Alan Cowsill) are heading down to the Bristol comic con this weekend (hence slightly early update today) so if you’re down there we might bump into you.
Anyway, to kick this week’s update off, I’d like to put show you guys Drax the Destroyer and explain the choice of costume because I know it’s a little controversial.
We looked at all the options for Drax and after a lot of debate and a few e-mails back and forward to Marvel we went for the modern look. Essentially we decided that there were three looks to Drax: the original, the Infinity Watch and the modern. Straight away the Infinity Watch look had to be ruled out, as the character is over 7 feet tall in this incarnation – he looks a lot like the Hulk in a purple cape.
This left us with the classic and modern looks, each of which seemed to have a lot of support. After going through a lot of comics we noticed that the modern version of Drax appeared in more issues and had a lot more (and often better) artwork than the classic version. We also took in to consideration the comments we’ve had about putting more modern (and hence relevant to today’s readers) characters in to the collection. As Drax had a mini-series in this form, starred in a few major crossovers (Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest) as well as Guardians of the Galaxy, and is likely to be back in Thanos Imperative, we thought this costume would be easily recognised.
We definitely considered the original costume. I thought it looked a little like Adam Warlock’s and personally I wasn’t too happy with the way the costume or figurine of Warlock turned out in our collection. I just also want to say that Dan’s comments about capes and saving money is out of context and at no point did we decide to go with the modern version because it might cost less. There are a number of factors that we must take into account to do with manufacturing cost (as I’m sure you expect) however Drax’s cape was not a big factor. Yes caped characters cost more to make but in the end it all balances out.
And as a side note, Dan himself actually championed the modern version in the office.
Anyway, with that aside I’d like to announce another character for the extension: Thunderbird.
This is a character we’ve wanted to include for a while and one that finishes the Giant-Size X-Men roster, which is one of the most important issues in the history of the X-Men. The reason he’s not been included so far is due to his height and also the fact he dies shortly after his debut. After looking through Marvel Handbooks and his first appearance we believe the character is just over 6’. According to numerous sources he’s 6’ 1 ½”. There has been some confusion in the past as in some modern handbooks he’s listed as 6’ 10”, which would make him too big. When it comes to the magazine we’ve decided to also include details on Warpath (the second Thunderbird). I know there were suggestions of doing them as a double pack but at the moment we have more important double packs to try and get through.
Lastly, here’s another sneak peek, an early stage sculpt of Hydroman.
Have a good weekend.

«Oldest ‹Older 401 – 446 of 446with the exception of Blade 1 and 2 and the IronMan movies the marvel films to date have all been a load of sh*te, just hope that Thor and Captain America can live up to the hype
Sorry mum and dad, I know I've let the family down, but what can I say?...Sometimes I need a little of that sweet DC stuff to get me through the day!
Ok then...a couple of recent MARVEL TPs that I've read recently which have been excellent (just to get me back into your good books...)
Old Man Logan
You don't have to be a die-hard Wolverine or X-man fan to enjoy this (I'm not)- it's just a thrilling and entertaining complete-in-itself saga.
Kick-Ass
I know it's been hyped to death because of the movie, which I missed unfortunately, but this is highly enjoyable in so many ways.
Both by Mark Millar strangely enough.
There you go...work time...late- shit!
BD
I qot a Fat Freddys cat sketch done at a signing in Mega City Comics must have been late 80's. Unfortunatly i put the sketch inside a magazine to keep it safe. Months later i traded in a pile o comics the sketch still hidden in one of the comics, If anyone has it i want it back :)
Man-thing in the Thunderbolts? I'm going to have to visit FP and do me some catching up.
Wasn't going to bother with Kick-Ass, then watched the film and really enjoyed it and now it's just a matter of time before I buy the TP. I keep buying other stuff instead and say "Next week!" each time. Actually, I had intended buying the Annihilation and GotG TPs first before Kick-Ass but now I'm not sure after the farce of a high-pitched woodland rodent beating a mad god.
P.S. PA, did you not think Spidey 2 was pretty good?
Spidey 2 was probably the best of the three but still very very very poor, what happened to Spidey in the third film? did he just forget that he has got spider sense?
PA
I didn't much enjoy Spider-Man 3, although some parts were okay (Pete being a big head). Not exactly sure what went wrong with that one. But I did think the second film was quite good and faithful to the tone of the comics.
The trouble with the Spiderman films is the actor who plays him. To me he is completely miss-cast, and he just comes across as a twat.
Apart from him, the Spidey films have been generally well made, but I have no desire to watch them again because of the crap central character.
Ghost Rider was good, although the villains didn't seem to be much of a challenge.
I've enjoyed all the Punisher movies, particularly The Dolph Lungren(!) one and the last one. Seriously.
BD
Ps. Ted,
You say you got a signed sketch of Fat Freddy's Cat at Mega City?
That is weird because I got a couple of signings and doodles done on a Freak Bros. comic at the old Forbidden Planet shop in Denmark Street (remember those days?).
This was also the late 80s I guess. The guys must have been on the same promotional tour...small world.
I remember being chuffed to bits at meeting these 'legends'.
BD
Surprised that you didn't like Tobey MacGuire as Peter Parker, Bob. I thought he was pretty good in the role (especially when you remember the daft options they were considering before him).
On another train of thought, where is Jacadoo? Do you think he may come back tomorrow to check if there has been an update? Come to think of it, there will probably be a flood of people on here tomorrow. Depending on the post Rich writes - I'm refusing to consider another week without a post - we may have as many as three reveals and possibly the unveiling of the "secret project". (Hey, maybe Rich has recreated the Super Soldier Serum!)
You probably saw me in the crowds Bob . I was the tall chap with the rugged, chiseled features and a half eaten Big Mac behind my ear for afters.
I remember about the same kinda time i nipped down to FP in oxford street For an Adam west appearance as soon as i got out at tottenham court tube and saw the crowds , i decided to nip to that tiny wee shop in Denmark street instead, If i am thinking of the same one as you the owner was the most wonderfully miserable, monosyllabic guy ever, I kinda liked him :) Comic Showcase was in nearby Neal st. Happy days big feller, Happy days!
One last game: favourite Comic Book Guy.
In Glasgow, it had to be the late Pete Root. He was such a legend in Glasgow that when he passed away about two years ago, Comics International had an obituary. He was kind of grumpy and cynical but I never met anyone so knowledgeable about comics. I would guess that Thor8 and CBRBeast are the most knowledgeable on here but even they would be amazed at what Pete knew. I always learned loads of stuff off him. He was some guy; I could have listened to him for hours. I first met him in the 1980s in the Virginia Galleries off Argylle Street. For a time he was in the FP in Buchanan Street. Then he was down in Parnie Street in the Trongate. The Glasgow diehards miss him...
Ted,
I used to go up to London regularly in those days, to do the 'tour' of the comic-shops. Quite conveniently, they were all in the same basic area.
I remember one that's long gone now (can't remember it's name), which was down a seedy little alley and up a flight of stairs. The shop itself was so small you couldn't swing a cat, but it was packed with back issues, far more than the 'bigger', well-known shops.
The bloke who ran it was the most miserable, unfriendly, customer-hating person you could find (wonder if he was related to the one you knew?)and he gave you half a playing card in exchange for your bag as you went in. I managed to lose the card once (God Knows how!)and he went ballistic! What a c***.
Ahh, Good times indeed!
BD
Rob your being modest, you are a fountain of Marvel knowledge (X-Men aside, but who cares about them) i wish i knew half of what you have forgoten. Thor8 is also a genius :)
PA
Fak me, that is exactly the guy i'm talking about, I had forgotten about the bag check. He wasn't the trusting type. Can't remember the name of the store but i found some great stuff in that tiny place, if there was more than three people in , it full to capacity. A tiny alleyway in Denmark St. Wire grill windows and Zero customer services.
And you made that wee mad guy mad? Shit your a brave guy Bob :)
Oh and i thought the last Punisher movie was good. The previous Thomas Jane one wasn't too bad either, I had that hitmans song stuck in my head for ages .Donny or Johnny Heck i think was the guys name.
Ah, if I only knew what you think I know, PA! It amazes me what I have forgotten. I only really remember the stuff I read as a kid (i.e., the 1970s). Everything else is a bit of a mush with no details. Two of the main things I notice on here are that the gaps in my knowledge are quite large and numerous and, amusingly but also worryingly, the tricks that my memory now play on me. I enjoy it when people come on here and tell me something I don't know (which happens all the time) or recommend a series to read. (Because of recommendations I bought the new Herc limited series for the Recorder - thanks again, John - and tried the new GotG stuff [although the latter did cause a sort of mental meltdown, ahem].) I never had anyone to talk to about comics except at marts and in comic shops and now I'm old and grey it's nice to chat to people who share my obsession (or is it mental illness?). Guys, you are a comfort to this weary man in his twilight years and I doff my cap in respectful gratitude.
well Rob you may be Old, Grey and possibly a bit mental?? but your knowledge is still vast compared to mine, quite like comparing Rocket Racoon to Thanos.
i am currently half way through the Annihalation books which i am enjoying and looking forward to a summer of Avengers and Thor and possibly Hulk
PA
...and Ted, i did like the Punisher movies by the way
PA
Oh, cheers, compared to a villainous fiend! Thanks a bunch! ;)
OK. Can't see Rich going another week without giving us an update. So in the hope that he will read this and be swayed last minute this is what i think should be done with the last 4 EM slots. So far we've had
FF villain x 2
FF ally
Spidey villain
X-Men x 3
Avenger
Asgard
X-Men ally
Thunderbolt
Master of Evil
Clearly one avenger isn't enough for an extension so another should be in. We've had a female already so a male should also be in and i'd go for swordsman. Believe he's pretty much the last 60s avengers character remaining. Although a female character, Monica Rambeau would also be a good choice here but i'd leave her as a big hitter for the next extension.
3 x-men and an x-ally so far means the x-villains will be further under-represented. From the forum polls so far it's unlikely an x-villain will make it through the vote so one should be confirmed by EM. I'd go for one of silver samurai, selene or sebastian shaw.
Cosmics, and especially the guardians of the galaxy, are a constant request on the forum and i don't think EM can afford to overlook this area of the MU in extensions from now on. Plenty of worthy characters here but i'd go for vance astro. Has been in both incarnations of the GotG and is an ideal figure to display other cosmics around in the future.
One more slot now but i'd finally confirm that northstar/aurora will be done as a double pack and free up an extra slot in the regular order. Would then have 2 out of the following 4 - JJJ, nico minoru, brother voodoo, patriot - with the other 2 marked as definites for the next extension.
This would likely then give us forge and domino plus one other confirmed through the forum vote.
So extension would be:
1 - Beetle
2 - HydroMan
3 - Karnak
4 - Magik
5 - Mockingbird
6 - Puppet Master
7 - Shanna
8 - Sif
9 - Thunderbird
10 - Tiger Shark
11 - Wizard
12 - Swordsman
13 - Silver Samurai/Selene/Shaw
14 - Vance Astro
15 - Nico Minoru/Patriot
16 - JJJ/Brother Voodoo
17 - Forge (likely forum)
18 - Domino (likely forum)
19 - ? (forum)
20 - ? (possible competition???)
A pretty good diverse extension imo
CBR Beast, you may be my new favorite member;
"Atlas [...] Thunderbolts [...] Gorilla Man [...] Honorable Mention to Guardians Of The Galaxy."
"And hopefully one day we'll see characters from it in the CMFC line. Gorilla Man and M-11: The Human Robot especially."
Throw in Spider-Man, and there's my monthly reading. And we seriously need some Agents of Atlas in the CMFC. I'd like to start with The Uranian, but I really don't care. I like all 6 pretty equally.
Did any of you guys ever go to 'Dark They Were And Golden Eyed' in Wardour St. London?
I believe it was the first comic shop over here, or in London at least.
As a kid it seemed huge. It was on 2 levels- Sci-Fi books and mags etc on the ground floor, and a labyrinth of comics downstairs. The place had a really trippy incense smell all the time. A fabulous shop...
Strangely enough my mate who runs my local comic shop used to work there back in the 70s. Now, he (Steve) IS a font of all knowledge- not only comics, but movies, tv series etc., and he has a wonderful taste in music too. That is, the same as me! (Led Zep, Deep Purple, Velvet Underground etc). Something classic is always playing in the background, as we go off into nostalgic threads about old Defenders storylines and such...
Certainly makes Thursdays ( new deliverary day) something to look forward to...
Comic Book Guys ...what would we do without them?
BD
mighty_marvel, I've been reading Brother Voodoo's recent TPB the last couple days and would definitely support that. ...I was actually thinking while reading, what if that made him in his current costume, and his brother as a spirit in the original costume, like they currently appear. Its the best of both worlds (on 2 levels!) That would never happen of course, so... But I'd still like to see Brother Voodoo by himself.
Bob, you are a brother.
I once sat in a German bar (actually a converted mine!) in Essen in 1988 - yeh, I was in Germany when the Wall was knocked down - arguing with a German for hours. Our argument?
I thought Physical Grafitti was the best album ever and Led Zep III was the second best. My German friend (he really WAS a friend, I'm not being sarcy) argued that Led Zep III was number 1 and Physical Grafitti was number 2.
We ignored the women who came to talk to us.
And even now I don't think it was dumb.
The Man-Thing movie was awful. Made for the Sci-Fi channel. And they never read a comic book. ...it didn't even look like Man-Thing.
The 2nd and 3rd Punisher movies were actually good, he just has a more selective audience. So the ratings are NEVER going to be great. They can reboot the movie a thousand times.. they'll never get their desired effect. I mean, the last one was basically a Punisher comic come to life, and they still weren't satisfied with it.
One Marvel movie people are forgetting (maybe on purpose) is Nick Fury Agent of SHIELD, starring DAVID HASSLEHOFF!!! Haha. The movie sucks, but its also great in that way. And Dugan is played by Peter Cullen, who voices Optimus Prime.
On the topic of movies, I just wanted to say that I have no interest in the new Spider-Man movie they're working on. 3-D, reboot, set in high school. I just don't care. I want my Spider-Man to be at least in college, preferably out already. And I was REALLY looking forward to actually getting to the B-lister villains. Kraven, Lizard, Vulture. Now we're going to be going back to Venom and Norman, I'm sure. Maybe this Peter Parker will actually tell jokes while he's fighting though...
Movies I'd LIKE to see:
GotG (new cast)
Agents of Atlas (duh)
MODOK's 11
Yes, MODOK and his group in a heist movie. Because you know how I love my lesser characters.
There was a Steve Coogan comedy a couple of years back in which he played a middle aged retired roadie sharing his rock and roll reminisances about Zepplin, DP etc ( Deep Purple not Deadpool) with his rather unimpressed young apprentice. This is now how i picture Bob Diamond when he posts. My father in law likes Deep Purple . I was more of a Stranglers, Damned SLF, Joy division kinda guy.
Swordsman WILL be revealed on Friday along with Captain Marvel, I'm just not sure which captain.
I really hope Monica Rambeau will be announced on Friday.
I also hope she'll be made in her Avengers-era Photon costume.
I don't mind the name on the magazine cover and on the label under the figurine's base, so long as we have the classic Photon costume and not the boring civilian uniform seen in Nextwave.
Personally, I think Photon was her best codename. It captured her unique, specific power to convert her body into pure energy and travel at light speed.
Fingers crossed, she'll make it into this extension.
What!? How did you not like Spiderman?!
Not only did it change and make way for the era of superhero movies, but Spiderman 2 was considered a better movie, with both acclaimed as 5 star films from fans and magazine critics alike. Spidey 3 dropped the ball. It was still decent. It was still better than alot of films out there.
Xmen was a very good film, with X2 being great. X3 wasnt too bad, was by no means awful.
Hulk was bad. Incredible Hulk was a great movie I thought.
Fantastic 4 was a really fun movie. The sequel wasnt good. It had good moments, but it wasnt very good.
Daredevil isnt great, still half decent.
Punisher is a good film. Punsiher warzone, meh, its ok.
Ghost Rider, Elektra, they were pretty bad.
Iron Man was awesome. IM2 was more of the same, just alot bigger and more action packed. You cant say its a bad film if you enjoyed the first one, and it is by no means terrible.
Marvel has had a good run of films. Not all of them have been classics, but the majority have been real fun movies, with over a handful of great films.
And remember, most of these films are raped by the film studios, not Marvel. With DC, warner bros is practically DC, and you cant exactly say they have produced a bunch of amazing movies. Tim Burton's Batman were great, and Nolan's are pretty good too. Everything else has been rubbish. Watchmen was awesome. V for Vendetta half decent.
Check out the Marvel animated films too, they are fun films.
WRONG MEASUREMENTS
I noticed that on the official EM Marvel Figurine site, there are incorrect measurements for Crimson Dynamo (given as 84mm) and Gladiator (the DD one, given as 89mm). However the actual figurines are much taller. I mean, the Dynamo figurine is almost as tall as Colossus and the Gladiator one is also huge. Of all the figures that could have been taller, why is Gladiator so tall anyway??? Aaarrgh!
Kirlianeyes; I too hope and desire that Photon goes by this nom de guerre and that she is done in her Avengers era uniform.
Some other weak Marvel movies made were a low budget FF movie that was shelved once completed. I believe The Human Torch flames on only once during the whole flick.
In the 70's Marvel released a few Movies made for the small screen which were supposed to serve as pilots for upcoming TV series that never bared fruit, they were DR. Strange and Captain America (who rode a motorbike and wore a helmet instead of a mask. Oh and he also had super strength. There was also a Cap A movie made in the 80's that after being produced was released for video instead of theaters. The Red Skull was Italian instead of German and he kicked Cap's butt throughout most of the movie and Cap only appears in uniform briefly at the beginning and towards the end of the movie.
In my opinion the worse Marvel flop was... not Nick Fury...not Man-thing...not Electra, but rather the winner of this category goes to none other than... the one and only...........HOWARD THE DUCK!!!
This update I hope to see another Avenger added to the fold. Would love to see...
Swordsman
Photon
Starfox
Arachne
Non Avengers...
White Tiger
Princess Python
Executioner
So you think I look like Saxondale, do you Ted???
Cheers for that!
BD
PS. I also love The Stranglers (and The Clash particularly)
PPs. It could be worse, at least you don't picture me as Alan Partridge.
I'm hoping for Starfox, Longshot and if it were ever possible Starbrand ( i know he's from new universe)
What are the chances of an extension of characters or even an updated series where they could start anew in the same scale but could do modern versions or alternate costumes?
I'd buy most all alternate costumes of say cap america, Britain, Spidey, Thor etc...
I'm really hoping for an Agent of Atlas or a cosmic (Gamora, Phyla, Star Lord, Rocket... anyone but an old GotG.)
p.s. I watched about 8 minutes of Howard the Duck. Its great to see him appear in random comics, but that movie sucked.
My word verification is "tototax," the taxes you must pay on a bull.
hey Rich...any chance of a sneak pic of Spiral today?
I know of the old movies, I just dont count them in the list. The technology wasnt good enough to make decent superhero films, so they dont count. :P
No update so far?! There had better be! I got a World Cup to watch, but want to see the update. We have reach over 400 comments on this thread...its crazy how long we have waited.
Just testing how html works...
