Skurge early stage

Thought I'd show you the first Skurge in progress digital images - nice bulky frame, with nice smooth contours, but lacking in dynamism somewhat. I've asked for the obvious costume detailing, aswell as much more aggression in the pose and facial expression - we await the improved version...

On a side note Kev Hopgood (who did the original sketch), had a go at a digital sculpt, just for fun. Although not quite as sharp, I like the meaner take on the character.

Sculpt is real nice and smooth look and I really like the detail in the face.

But you are right, perhaps it needs some more dynamism as its a special. Personally the thing I dont like about the design is the skirt. You cannot take this character seriously in it, but I know thats the reference you have.

Also, I know i positioned the arms like that, but his right arm is raised too high, which makes his wrist bend down, which makes the grip seem a bit limp. I think a bend at the right elbow down would make a more natural pose, but I know, I fluffed with that drawing too.

Some aggression in the face could look good, but it could be OTT. I quite like this look in his face, but could understand making him look angrier.

But he has good potential to be an awesome sculpt based off this.

Skurge looks great, I agree that his face could be a bit more aggressive but either way i'm happy.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Wow, that was fast. Nice one.
I think Kev's digital rendition of Skurge is the best. The details on the costume are perfect, and the aggressive expression has a myhtological quality that is not present in the other proposed design. Basically, in the first design Skurge looks just like a wrestling champion figurine; in the secodn design, he really looks like an Asgardian.

Nice Skurge mock-up! I agree about having to be a bit more aggressive though. But still, i'm just happy he made it in.

Wolfsbane cover is also nice. Her being in the collection makes me wish there was a last spot for Strong guy.

Dan, do you think there's even a little chance we might have one last special after Skurge?

I mean if Giant-man comes out Octobre/November and Skurge in January, there's still place for one last special in march, no?

Since number 200 is suppose to come out mid-april.

cheers

You sure got to work on this one right away. I like thehow this is comming out so far in this early stage, but I definately agree that the facial expression needs to look more menacing and his stance is just a wee bit to pasive.

Could you show us some pics on Giant-Man and his magazine? What about Hela?

PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT!!!

I really like the size and the pose.

I can't wait for the sculpt.

Not last, but next please.

I don't know. I think its hard for me to get behind it just because it would be so easy to customize. At the end of the collection, I'd like a character we can't get any other way, and I JUST saw a pretty good custom from Radioactive Man.

I'll still buy it and gladly add it to my shelf... I just wish it was Groot or Lockjaw.

tinodragon14 said...

Hi Dan,
Thanks for the update. Preliminary look of Skurge is good but his face does need a more aggressive expression. I almost wish he was raising his axe as if to strike but this simple pose will go well next to the Enchantress.

The Wolfsbane cover looks better then the figure.

Hope to see a update on Constrictor.

Oh Dan,
They do need to do The Jackal since they advertised him. They can get away with not doing Aunt May since they did JJJ but Jackal is a wanted Spidey villain so they need to approve him so they are not false advertising.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

I wouldn't opt for a dynamic pose. It didn't work too well for Terrax, another axe-wielding character. The pose in Kev's digital sculpt is simple yet imposing, and would work well by simply adding the axe and giving a subtle sense of 'attack' motion to the arm that holds it.

Bob said...

I'd like to have Skurge wielding his axe in Kiev's pose or swinging it in a dynamio pose with the other hand gesturing forward as in Dr. Strange pose

Protocide said...

Try this; chin down, eyes foward, widen his rather weak looking jaw. axe positioning is off. still missing helmet for some reaon...no reason to leave it out. Don't go out with a wimper on this one, like the hugely disappointing (and non heroic) physiques of Captains Britain and America It would be a shame.

SinisterVenom said...

I wasn't expecting to see any previews for Skurge this early. I actually thought we might have got to see Hela first seeing as how she was chosen before the majority of the latest extension and we still have yet to see her. But very good, Skurge is coming along very nicely! The Wolfsbane cover looks fab too.
Dan, if you wouldn't mind and if you have a few minutes to spare, could you please to Tino about his calls for the Jackal and how EM could possibly get in trouble for false advertising? I ask because I too really wanted the Jackal in the collection but with the cancellation announced, I realize the chances of that happening have gone downhill big time. But if what Tino says is true, I'd be very interested to hear what EM are planning to do about it.
Thanks Dan the Man! (Yeah, I went there!)

Not bad, especially with the costume detailing in that second image.
I prefer the less dynamic poses in terms of stance etc., I prefer them to look like poses as opposed to action shots. But a more expressive face would be good for this character.

The stance looks okay, I would like to see one with him leaning his axe over his shoulder as well, but this is fine really.

Thor8 said...

I find the pose to be okay,it's his facial expression that has to be improved by making him look meaner and aggresive, you know, that "Don't mess with me boy!" look. If you DO consider anoter pose how about axe in one hand at his side slightly tilted upward and holding his helmet under his other arm.(Same facial expression mentioned before),head slightly tilted to the side he is holding his axe.

I was the one who brought to the attention that Jackal was the only character in the primary list that was not included in this collection, but I don't believe EM can be accused of "false advertisement" since at no moment did EM state that those were the characters that would appear in this collection nor did they promise to produce them. I just noticed that he was the only one on this list not done and found the fact curious, and so stated the inquiry,I wasn't trying to accuse anyone of breaking promises or false advertising.

That 'family tree' pull-out from the boost was just to showcase to the man on the street how intertwined the characters in the MU are, and hopefully get people interested. at no point did we even consider that we would actually get to make all but 2 from that poster(Aunt may and Jackal). Wow quite an achievement really!

Sadly Jackal (and Aunt May) didn't make it in.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

Well, thank god we don't have Aunt May. I would have loved Jackal, although I think Kaine is the most interesting Spider-verse character that should have been in the CMFC.
But let's not forget the amazing achievement of 200 CMFC issues. I've been collecting for years, and not a single day goes by without me standing in front of all these figurines with a sense of awe. I love this collection and what it has done for Marvel fans. I just wish that EM will soon be able to announce the launch of a new Marvel figurine collection.
... any hints/clues/news yet, Dan?

tinodragon14 said...

Oh well I had to try & maybe squeeze one more figure out of them before the end even if it was The Jackal.

LAWay said...

Another attempt at tweaking Skurge without going OTT and too dynamic. Did him resting on his axe. What do you think?
Skurge Pose II

Thor8 said...

I like the pose you chose (hey that ryms)LAWay, it's something different and he would fit nicely amoung the other asgardians without the axe getting in the way. Do you think you could try your hand at doing him in the pose I proposed in my previous post just to see how he would look?

jimbob said...

That's a nice pose as well LAWay. It's good that the axe won't get in the way of other figs. It might be easier to pack for EM as well.

Dear Dan can we please have Giant Man out end of this year.

tinodragon14 said...

Like your recent pose of Skurge LAWay. It would be interesting seeing him in an aggressive pose of raising his battle-ax about to strike.

BLAKENEWMAN2002 said...

LAWay, your new Skurge is pure class. Bravo, both in terms of the pose you've chosen and your skills in creating the mock-up. I, for one, would love Skurge in that pose.

The Mad Thinker said...

i agree with laway , have him standing over his axe , axe head on figurine base and 2 hands resting on the handle.

The Mad Thinker said...

yep , and after seeing your sketch layay , i want the figurine to look just like it. Perfect , take note dan.

LAWay said...

Thanks for the kind words on my Skurge pose guys. The idea just came to me and had to try it out. I may try out your idea Thor8, but tiny, yours sounds like a complete do over. What you are suggesting is probably kinda similar to the Abomination special pose.
Would be cool, be we already have one like it.

TheTooN said...

I'll give another vote to Leighs new sketch, spot on mate. After Terrax I'm happy without dynamic poses. I do love Terrax as a standalone but he doesnt work on a plinth next to other regular figurines.

Got my first EM Star Trek issue on Monday and its well worth checking out for any of you interested.

and now the three warriors??? Heimdall? Surtur? Malekith? :)))
An asgardian extension of this great collection, and maybe... a mutant extension, an avengers extension and more and more and again and again? :))) Pray the gods.

tinodragon14 said...

Laway, I assume you meant tino not tiny but then maybe you meant tiny. Not surprised you were interested with Thor's idea but dissed mine. I did not mean to actually do him like that. I was just curious to see how it would look done by your hands. I think both positions are good & frankly looking at them both I would be hard pressed to choose one.

Regarding The Abomination I was disappointed that they had him wielding that pipe & I don't know why when the art they took it from he had his arms raised but with clenched fists not holding a weapon.

LAWay said...

Sorry about that tino, slipped my mind for some reason calling you tiny. lol Apologies.

I think it would look good with a raised axe pose, but like I said, not something easy I can just manipulating this render with. And I have stated in the past my liking of less dynamic poses. Dynamic poses can look great, but then can very easily be messed up.

I was always taught to KISS.

Keep It Simple, Stupid. ^_^

Having retuned from my travels to Iceland and Russia I was pleased to find that the Shi devil picked up the Dc chess collection and the amazing Mojo sculpt.

The DC ches collection demonstrates how good sculpts are when done in metallic resin.

Cya later guys I,m preparing for another trip to Russia before my unpleasant visit to Africa

Talk about coincedence DP,I was just wondering where you were. I've also noticed that Jacadoo and BobDiamond have gone missing again.

Dan: Can we get some news, even better some pics about the Hela figurine and corresponding mag.

BobDiamond said...

I'm back too Thor8, me and my better half have been sunning ourselves abroad, and have come back to gorgeous weather here in the UK for once too!
Anyway... Skurge looks excellent, and although it's a terrible thing this collection coming to an end, at least we're going out with a bang with one of the truly iconic Stan and Jack villains!
Now, if only we could have got that tantalizing extension Dan told us about...I would actually have had a Killraven figurine! So close and yet....

Ah well, cheers for now,
BD

I can't speak for others. But I lost interest when all our many well-articulated and commercially-compelling suggestions slid like warm spittle down the unbending EM stonewall.

zombiedude13 said...

I agree, that last list really was the clincher, because there were sooooo many awesome figures that would have really added to the series. Killraven AND Brother Voodoo? How great would that have been unto itself?

With everything ending, there really isn't much to say unless you carp about how the series has died and no one listens to how to save it.

Before that it was all about which figure was better than Lockjaw for the last special.

Face it, we are nearing the event horizon, and getting sucked in.

tinodragon14 said...

Agreed... once the powers that be decide they will not hear anything said from the very people who have been buying their product.

In New Orleans there is only one major newspaper The Times-Picayune & the family that owns it decided that they will no longer publish a daily newspaper. Despite all the cries & letters asking them to reconsider including paying more for the daily paper they are not changing their mind one bit. They totally ignored their readers. They made up their mind just like EM and that was it.

In Italy, my country, for the third time, the collection is on sale again, from number 1 and probably to the end.

I think that a remake of greats charachters, like Wolvie, Spidey, Avengers and X men(s), with other charachter not realized, is one of the solution, to continue or rebooted the collection.

Statistic tell that for a group of 100 selected fans, 10 are probably real collector.

Thor8 said...

Well then,it seems like(according to your comments)that this blog is just about as dead as the collection itself, but I think I'll just stick around a couple of more updates to see if we get any news on Giant-Man,Hela,and Skurge and then I'll call it a day.(I still hold a thread of hope of hearing some good news, though!)

I can see one place where Eaglemoss are losing money :

The number of poorly painted or broken figurines that are sent back.

Latest casualty = The Swordsman.

My local shop had some with broken or bent swords so I went down to Forbidden Planet in London instead , and found that they had about 10 figurines exactly the same , with broken / bent swords.
I also noticed that the hand holding the sword was just a blob of purple paint on most of them and you could not see the fingers wrapped around the swords handle.

The last 2 DC figurines were total crap too - Wonder girl ( ugly girl )and negative man ( negative character ), it's like Eaglemoss are deliberately making trash because they no longer care and just want it all over and done with.

Why didn't we get characters like Atom Smasher , Sandman , or Liberty Bell in the DC collection ?

Every time a damaged figurine is sent back to Eaglemoss it costs them money in postage / packaging etc.

Take care in the final product and package well to prevent damages !!

These figurines we are receiving look poor compared to the master versions that you show us on here.

The Mad Thinker said...

Another way of improving things would be to make earlier issues of the Marvel and DC figurine collections available to purchase again through back orders.
I'm sure I am not the only one who is missing some issues of either collection.
This would also attract new buyers if they thought they could start from issue 1 and be able to collect the whole series.

HELA! HELA! HELA!:)

tinodragon14 said...

I could not believe the DC collection never included prominent villains like The Parasite, Toyman & Weather Wizard. Or only doing one of the Metal Men. And no Commissoner Gordon.

Hawkeye said...

With regard to broken figures, the Sif figure I picked up from Forbidden Planet also had a broken sword - to their credit when I went back and sought a replacement they did so with no quibble.

Just got my JJJ figure and if that's what they can do with civilians, I echo the comment from Tino that they never did Gordon in the DC collection.

Thor8 said...

I didn't get a broken Sif,I got a broken heart! The people I purchase my figurines from were short handed by their distributor so I was left hanging. So now I'm at the mercy of the money mongers oin the internet. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!
