"Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger"

MODOK paint change - as well as some of you guys on the blog, both Marvel and ourselves agreed a more metallic paint job would be an improvement. Hmmm shiny....

Nico Minoru - Improved rough stage (Setting aside the controversy over this young lady ;) - I think the sculpt is actually one of the best we've done in a while). Rich, myself and comp winner (sorry mate forgot your name!) did a lot of work to get this right – I think we achieved it! (we were going to do her in her schoolgirl/punk look, but the comp winner chose her first costume, which is fair enough - check out the pretty awful mock-up drawing I did!)

Sebastian Shaw - Wow! I was stunned by the dynamism when the shots of this fella came in on wednesday. Well done Rich for injecting some fresh ideas into the poses even after 180 issues!

Mockingbird Paint - really nice clean paint job - I was really happy with the way the blue came out. BTW the hair in ponytail works for me, I also think the pose looks amazing from all angles - not something easily achieved, especially with the female sculpts.

COVER roughs – This is where John Tomlinson earns his stripes as he was Editor of 2000AD and has a good rapport with the industries finest – dealing with the commissioning of covers takes some time and effort and I’m more than happy for John to continue this – with the odd comment from me here and there of course. We wanted to get The great Gene Colan to do our Dracula cover but alas he’s gone to the great art gallery in the sky. Rest in peace Gene Colan.

Blackheart - (great looking baddie but he's only in about 32 comics so bit worried about doing his mag!) Great cover from Gary Erskine though... We’re gonna try a very atmospheric uplighting effect with the colouring on this one.

Beetle cover sketches - Wow we got up and coming star Andy Tong from Panini's Eagle award wining Spider-Man comic to draw this one! I reckon he'll be doing American books before too long - he did a few roughs first, we chose pose 3, then we got him to adjust the head so it looks out at the reader. The colouring should really bring this one alive.

Wizard cover sketch – Nice powerful image from John Mcrea.

NEWS ON SPECIALS!!!???? Rich can we confirm the next special already?!!!

As marketing want us to the finalise the next 20 asap for various reasons, I've decided to announce 2 at a time from now on (this may increase if necessary) I will also discuss with Rich what we can do for a comp this time, and get the ball rolling on that - also the polls can't be done until all 16 EM choices are final. so we need to make haste!

So the next one confirmed is....

Longshot (I believe he has hollow bones - so considering doing him in the lightest material possible! :) Rice paper?

Swordsman (not someone I was originally planning to put through, but he seems to be much wanted by the fans - he was only around for a brief time (in Marvel time at least!) - so maybe we can do something in the magazine with the other Guys who took up the mantle after Jacques DuQuesne (Javert & Von Strucker). He made a comeback in the Recent (ish) Captain Marvel revival, so we should have a enough the build a magazine around.

Next week 2 females will be announced! Let the guessing games begin...

This weeks game, before Danielle gives us her next update: -

List your most hated character and blogger and give a reason.

I hate Longshot, mainly because he looked like a reject from a 1980's boy band. He appeared to be a totally pointless character that the marvel universe could easily have done without.

I don't hate any of the bloggers .. i love you all ( but not in the way Tomazzz would like (.....shudder ,,,))

It appears AC is like the Klingons. They only travel in threes.
Deadpool there was a HATE MONGER villain. He was shot & killed & when they pulled off his hood it was Hitler!

Just received Ares, Triton and Sauron.

Potential worst figurine/special in the collection? Thanks again to EM for not listening to all the negative remarks regarding this horid figurine.

Anonymous said...

Just remember Deadpool, every character is someone's favorite. And every character is someone's proverbial "dog turd" as you so charmingly put it. I'd certainly take Power Pack any day of the week and twice on Sunday over Deadpool for instance. One of the worst characters in comics history. But just because I don't care for Deadpool, doesn't mean he shouldn't have been made. Just like Power Pack, The Beyonder, and others shouldn't be excluded just because some people dislike them. Bcause every character has people that dislike them.

There are painted pics of JJJ and Tigershark over on the SHFF and I must say they both look STUNNING! The detail of JJJ's newspaper turned out well too. So does this mean these pics will be shown in tomorrows update Dan?
Still no good ordering Sauron from the site. Whether he's a good special or not, I still want him :(

I really appreciate the forum and the blog. I believe that the forum and blog represent a good portion of the "harcore" or "passionate" fans. That being stated it also must be taken into consideration the multitude of people WORLDWIDE that support the collection. I think the total registered users of the blog and forum represent the opinion of many but not of all. The top forum poll received 59 notes, not many in retrospect. Many people don't blog and people like myself will buy every figure no matter the choices. I think it's very important for the editors to listen to the polls, but it is equally important to consider the many many people who support the collection and dont take time to express their opinions. It's a tricky line for the editors to walk and lets keep in mind that this is still a business. Bottom line MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Editors please keep in mind that no matter the fallout...some characters are undeniablely "niche" or "self serving" choices. While characters who have proven to have a big history in the marvel universe are more likely to sell WORLDWIDE. Even though a few spots should be kept for the core fans

Actually, the largest polls have way more than that many votes Kissy. They're just no longer copies of the last forum choice, due to changing forum servers.

I'd love to have a Beyonder figure. He is one of the most unique characters in the MU. But if he gets made in whatever form, he needs to have a special feature, like a coat of the same luminescent paint used on Radioactive Man to make him stand out, like on his white outfit or even his eyes!

Gremlin in the works said...

I think the perm and the white shellsuit will make him stand out enough without making it glow int he dark too.

Bob said...

I am just sayin' a Beyonder will make a great figure but making it luminescent-coated might convince some more MU fans to include it in their collection. I got Chen Lu, The Radioactive Man just because of this glowing feature.

John said...

"PS...That has got to be the most off-topic post I've ever posted."

Is there a "like" button I can press ;D

I think I would prefer Power Pack with 2 on 2 bases, if grouped at all. They're small, but not that small. In the proper MU, the two oldest are at least teenagers. I don't know about anyone else, but I would prefer getting Julie Power as she was recently in the Loners mini.

Now Franklin and Val Richards sharing a base I could go with. :)

Beyonder HAS to be in his white suit. Its what he's truly known for. Going with the armor is the equivalent of putting Electro in his costume from MK Spider-Man (the one used in Ultimate Alliance) because it looks so much less silly. No! Electro needs his giant, goofy lightning bolts and Beyonder needs to be Donny Osmond. ...but at the end of the day, I would just be happy to get the Beyonder, no matter the form.

Deadpool, I love you. Moonstone, Gamora and Namora for me. I'd prefer Venus, but Namora is also a huge want of mine. Moonstone clears the path for more Thunderbolts. And Gamora is my 3rd most wanted of everybody. PLEASE, EM, announce Gamora.

And I completely forgot about N&A freeing up 2 spaces. So this means Shaman, right?! Just go ahead and confirm him. :D He's the last of the BIG names of Alpha Flight. I still want Vindicator. Others want Marrina. Still more want Box, Talisman and even Yukon Jack, but Shaman finishes the big names. Once he's confirmed, my Vindicator campaign kicks in. :D

"He was shot & killed & when they pulled off his hood it was Hitler!"

Could you imagine if EM just made a Hitler figurine to be a Captain America villain? haha. I mean, he definitely was, but it would be sooo weird having a tiny Hitler on your shelf.

Great update.

Loving MODOK, Sebastian Shaw and Mockingbird.
Really glad Swordsman is making the collection.

Unlike a few people I'm pleased to find that the next two names are female characters. It's understandable that there would more be more male then female characters because they significantly out number the girls.

I think Moonstone is the most likely to be in those two.

I think the other will be one of these three. Alkhema, Deathbird or Mantis.

Bob said...

Gamora and Moonstone FTW!

I'm sorry, but Beyonder is Marmite?!?!?!

So I guess everyone who buys the collection wanted Jubliee, or Impossible Man, or Blink. I guess everyone who buys this collection is just as exticed about Wiccan being made as well. Because I guess he isn't a marmite charcter, but the Beyonder is ??????

I thought we were buying the Classic Marvel Figurine Collection. Guess it's time to change the name to the Marmite Free Collection.

Anonymous said...

Beyonder is a character that divides opinion a great deal, it's true. Mostly due to Secret Wars 2, which was a somewhat mediocre follow-up to the original. I can see why EM feels the way they do. But I hope he gets made anyway.

As for Power Pack? I say bring them on. All four of them on a Mega Special Base, when they were most recognizable... as kids in their footie pajama type costumes. I don't care for what was done to them after they were allowed to grow up. And if we went with the modern looks, we'd lose what makes them special as characters.

Longshot>Deadpool

Back to the mini-update and SHFF news.
JJJ and Tigershark looks very good.
Only 4 specials this year, so like few people says we need 6 next year.
jan - northstar and aurora
mar - terrax
may - warpath (to tie in with thunderbird release)
jul - madame web (ties in with spiderman movie release)
sep - lockjaw
nov - mojo

Look at TOP 10 from poll:
59 Longshot - confirmed
50 Wolfsbane
47 Silver Samurai
45 Moonstone
45 Shaman
39 Dani Moonstar / Mirage
38 Gamora
36 Deathbird
34 Howard the Duck
34 Stingray

For sure Moonstone and Gamora should be confirmed tomorrow. After confirming two male x-characters (hero and villain) we should have two x-ladies, but not before middle of August.

Beyonder for 201-220 extension!

jimbob said...

No to Power Pack!Waste of time.
Don't even go there EM!

There are too many wanted specials to get through.

I'am not looking forward on getting Sauron.

Why do we keep on getting specials that crouch so much!?It takes away too much of their height.

toad , moondragon , j j jameson , and tigershark pictures on the super hero figurine forum. All great but toad's out stretched arm doesn't look right. It's a lot longer than his other arm , and the hands have the same problem. I think that they should have included a moss covered rock at the base and rested the arm / hand on this , making the out stretched arm shorter and look more in preportion. It would also add more detail to the sculpt and make him look like he'd just crawled out of the swamp , hence the moss covered rock.

Power Pack are extremely popular and have immense appearance figures. You couldnt really argue their inclusion into the collection. I have never read an issue, but you could easily argue how, being a main marvel team with such popularity, they they deserve an appearance over many characters who have already appeared or have been announced. Still dont think the duck should be in the collection purely because he would look stupid.

Checked out the pics on the forum. JJJ looks decent. Tigershark looks wonderful if he had a paperbag on his head. Really, what were you thinking with that face, that chin? Looks like a creepy old man.

Seriously, doesnt anyone notice these little things to fix? What sort of quality control do these figurines go through before production? Is it purely down to it being too expensive to get one sculpt that you cant afford to make any changes what so ever? If so, it is a shame. You have dropped the ball with alot of figurines, especially after some strong feedback that goes unnoticed. Tigershark looks an incredible figurine with 1 great big flaw in it.

Talking of which, Sauron, like i said, is terrible. No way a special, thanks for ripping us off on that one. Such a poor paintjob and colourization. It was a bad pose to begin with that did not show off a special character. These crouched poses on the larger characters are defeating the purpose of making them specials, and in doing so, it makes the figurines look bad and as a buyer you feel cheated in purchasing these characters.

mtravis390 said...

So would the Power Pack all fit on one base?

Kal Brindle said...

I think the Tigershark figure is amazing and see nothing wrong with his chin. In fact I think it's one of the very best figures Eaglemoss have ever produced and that's just from seeing a pic. Usually these things are 100 times better when you see them in person, so I can only imagine how great this one is going to be.

BobDiamond said...

Yeah, I've got to agree, Tiger Shark looks amazing. Especially from the side-on view showing the curvature of his back and his excellent fin.
I'm also extremely pleased with Sauron. He's much bigger than he appears in the photos, and the paint-job looks spot-on.
You're a hard man to please Leigh! :)

Now now Tomasz, this here blog is a window for serious Marvel enthusiasts to have their say on the future development of the collection.

A mad idea? Maybe, but blame Rich for that

Now if somebody takes a dislike to the suggestion of a character getting made, that is just as valid as somebody coming along and saying it would be the best figure of the collection. It all helps to give a balanced view to those at EM when they have to make the big decisions.

Taking the option of banning the IP's of bloggers who disagree with the party line? Now that sort of dictatorship is seriously not on. There is a place for that sort of behaviour..... the SHFF ;)

Sauron is indeed a Special. It doesn't matter if he's crouching. His height, tail, head, and wingspan all equal him requiring a Special Slot. You may not like it, but oh well. Thems the facts.

And bring on Rocket Raccoon and Howard the Duck. Both are characters who have a great deal of history and are fairly major characters in the Marvel Universe.

And let's not have any more talk about banning people just because you disagree with them, if that was the case there would be nobody on here.

Sneak previews on the forum...
Tiger Shark is absolutely phenomenal. It's gonna be one of the best figs ever, imo.

And then JJJ. The sculpt is great, and it has an iconic retro quality to it.

I'm happy for those collectors who wanted him, but it's the one fig
that I am not going to buy. Personally I am not interested in
non-costumed characters.

Love for costumed characters / non-love for non-costumed ones
Characters like Tiger Shark represent all I love about Marvel and the CMFC. Characters like JJJ, I love them in the comics - but I'm not interested in figs. Even a recognisable character like JJJ is still a dude in a blazer and trousers, and for me that's not the visual stimulation and feat of supreme imagination that I seek and love in Marvel characters.

And that's my view, folks.
Just my personal likes and dislikes, is all.

mighty_marvel said...

i really don't understand the issue some people have with non-costumed characters in the collection. not saying they shouldn't hold this view, just that i don't understand it.

personally i'd much rather have a fig of a 'civilian' character that i care about and who i know the history and importance of, regardless of how it looks (not saying that JJJ doesn't look amazing cos he does), than a fig of someone in an outlandish costume who i've barely heard of and who every time i see it i have to say 'who the **** is that again?'

for me, connection with a character is much more important than a few bright colours.

also, don't know how it can be said there's no 'visual stimulation' in the JJJ fig. the bright colours may not be there but more detail has gone into him than into many of the spandex brigade. i think he looks to be one of the stand out figs of the collection.

and speaking of the level of detail you're achieving in the more 'civilian' looking figs, i'm thinking more and more that EM would do a fantastic job on a dr who figurine collection. please make this happen.

oh, and moonstone, gamora, meggan, misty knight or selene tomorrow please dan

John said...

"for me, connection with a character is much more important than a few bright colors."

Fully agree. In fact, I used to say JJJ was my 4th favorite comic characters (after Spidey, Shocker and Chameleon.) I don't care so much about how the character looks as much as how much I like the characters themselves. Alystair Smythe or Mendel Stromm don't really have exciting looks, but they are huge wants for me. Or if a character looks "silly," then there's obviously something else that has won me over.

Let's even look at the two ends of the spectrum from other bloggers/forum users... Hammerhead seems to be the most requested Spidey character currently. Yet you know that in the end, he'll basically look like a 20's mobster with a flattop. That's it. Going over to "silly" designs, the most requested Special is currently Mojo. If people don't think a duck will fit into the rest of the collection, how can they think THAT will?! It's completely alien to anything else produced thus far.

Yet I think Mojo is a fair choice (not a character I like, but still) and Hammerhead would be amazing to add. So basically, characters like JJJ and Rocket Raccoon seem to be fully justified to me if collectors are requesting characters like those mentioned above. :D

And my word verification was "Reprove." Hmm...

Why does everyone call General Ross a civilian?

Rabid Womble said...

John,

General Ross is a civilian because he has no powers. the same as Aunt May, Mary Jane, Foggy Nelson, Jarvis etc.

I have no problems with civilians being released if they are major characters in specific comics. What you don't want are random people that were in 2 or 3 issues only.

mighty_marvel said...

don't know why certain people insist ross is a civilian. ok, he has no powers, but neither does nick fury. ok, he hasn't got a spandex costume, but neither does kingpin. and he is heavily involved in storylines, not just a background character. he's one of the hulk's main nemeses for crying out loud. in no way is he a civilian and he deserves a spot in the collection.

Oh John that's the great thing about HAMMERHEAD was when he was shot in the head & left for dead in that alleyway the last thing he saw was a movie poster for a gangster flick & so after being brought back by Dr. Harrow who rebuilt his brain & skull with a metal alloy that last image ruled his memory. He is Marvel's version of Dick Tracy's FLATTOP.

tomaz ridiculous idea of banning people who dont nod their head and agree with everything is just mental. How will EM learn if we dont be honest? We got the colour of MODOK changed because a few of us expressed our opinions, and the figure looks better for it.

Sure I complain alot. and I am hard to satisfy. But something like tigershark, i wasnt the only one to comment on the chin, and just wanted to know if things like this get checked out and how regularly they do by EM. Also, alot of people werent happy with sauron. Alot were. But that doesnt mean if you dont like something you have to shut up.

I accept the duck deserves to be in this collection. I may not like it, but he has the history. Rocket Raccoon is stretching it, but if other GOTG members appear first, I will have to accept that too. Civilians in the collection? I am all for it if they have the history and look good, like most of the news battered around will no doubt.

We have already had a few characters in suits, so whats the difference? Its the overall design and the history. If they have a distinctive look like JJJ, MJ, Gwen, Ross, I would love to see their inclusion.

Anonymous said...

Actually, Nick Fury does have powers. He's got an extended lifespan thanks to the Infinity Formula.

As for Ross, only if he's made as Red Hulk. Same with Rick Jones as A-Bomb. With Ross, you actually have him as an Avenger with Red Hulk.

tinodragon14 said...

Thanks SinVen! Found them. JJJ looks good but that empty hand of his cries out to be holding a cigar.
TIGERSHARK'S physique is amazing right down to his back fin & clenched buttocks. Of course the paint job is going to be even more essential with TS with all those zig zags on his costume & the paint job on this figure is perfect. I'm so glad they went with his classic look & not the foolish fish look he has now. The only quibble is the lower part of his face. The chin does not look right facing front but then from other angles it seems okay. Puzzlement?

Anonymous said...

cbr beast : regardless of what you say - general ross is more popular than red hulk. Check the forum poll. General ross has the most votes and is most wanted. And i'd love a rick jones figurine - have him with the rock look holding a guitar. I could stand him next to longshot and dazzler and have some kind of 80's rock band display thing going on.

No, he has more forum votes. That doesn't indicate that he's more popular beyond the small cross-section of forum posters. The fact that he's only ever been made in collectible format as Red Hulk speaks a great deal. Not to mention he's got a popular solo comic book. And now that Bendis has his mitts on him, expect that he';l be sticking around as Red Hulk long after Hulk dies at the end of Fear Itself.
