Q & A

So, I promised I'd answer some questions, here goes:

Q: What reference are you using for Odin's colour, because everything I have seen he is more gold than blue.

A: Please see below for that answer.

Q: Question, any chance of a Warriors Three Triple Special

A: Highly unlikely considering the problems we’ve had with the double packs.

Q: (i) is Eaglemoss considering the cancellation of our collection?

A: Eaglemoss always states the current end point of a collection and then considers giving the series extensions. At this point it looks promising for another Marvel extension.

Q: (ii) if not, when can we expect the next extension to be confirmed?

A: Soon hopefully, it’s not up to me but those higher up than myself, I’ll let you know, when I know.

Q: (iii) assuming an extension is green-lit, can you persuade the powers to give the go-ahead to another 50 or 60 issues, rather than a measly 20 issues?

A: Unfortunately not. All our collections work on a 20-issue extension; this is how we cost our projects.

Q: can we marvel collectors get any surprises like a sub set or some other kind of marvel related collection in the near future?

A: At the moment we are not planning any more subsets, DC or Marvel. This could quickly change though. My personal opinion is that we should not produce too many subsets at the same time otherwise we may quickly find collectors buying none.

Q: Are you considering doing any other figurine collections in the near future?
some interesting ideas have been listed on this blog by fans / collectors in the past and present.
tell us what you think rich , and are any of them achievable ?

A: We’re always considering other figurine collections – after all, we produced LOTR and tried a New Line Horror collection. I love the ideas that you guys have, they are very similar to the ones we’ve talked about in the office. Personally I’d love Street Fighter, Doctor Who, Star Trek, 2000AD, Hellboy, Sandman, the list goes on, I’m a big geek.

Q: are we going to get anymore specials this year ?
are we going to get anymore double packs ? they seem to be very popular in demand , especially northstar and aurora.

A: Our specials this year are Blob, Sauron, Odin, TBC, and hopefully we’ll be able to put some more out. Double packs are not out of the question and I really want TBC to become Northstar and Aurora. But even if this happens it doesn’t guarantee we’ll do anymore double packs.

Q: would you consider producing a few triple pack specials to complete teams ?

A: Highly unlikely.

Q: The only question I ask at the moment is can we pretty pretty please see a sneak peak of a painted Blackheart soon please Rich?

A: Yep, here it is:

Q: Have you a personal favourite sculpt? Ages ago you said you liked Gladiator but with so many amazing sculpts like Spiral, Cannonball and Blob have your favourites changed?

A: It’s a little unfair for me to call favourites, as I work with all the sculptors on this project and appreciate all their work. However, I have a soft spot for Blink, as she was my personal choice for the collection.

Q: Have you considered slipping generic units into the collection. Grunts like AIM agents, Hydra agents, Hellfire Club drones and Hand Assassins are just as important as individual villains

A: We have but I’m not convinced this is what the majority of collectors want. I’m sure this has been debated before but let me know how you feel about generics in the comments section.

Q: what's the prognosis on two packs in general? We the collectors think they're a fine idea and want Colleen & Misty Knight, Cypher & Warlock, Darkstar & Vanguard among others to make the collection - what can we do as collectors to convince the bean counters it's a viable idea?

A: Simple answer to this is that they are something I like but are not that easy to implement. Please try to understand that since the collection started our costs have gone up and this makes it difficult to ship two figurines in one special. Remember double the figures is double the costs of sculpting, tooling, painting etc… It is a fine balance as not everyone that collects the regular issues buys the special issues.

Q: Hopefully sales of the CMFC continue to be strong and the announcement is imminent. Has the use of resin actually had any impact on your bottom line? Has it increased the viability of the collection continuing?

A: As mentioned in the previous answer, costs have gone up but the collection has stayed at £5.99 for 6 years so you can imagine the ‘bottom line’ has decreased. The most important thing though is to keep fans like yourself on the series.

Q: If there is an extension, will we see another contest to choose the final character of the extension? While the final choices always inspire debate - it is still very exciting and I'm always stoked for the winner!

Q: Would you ever consider a contest for a Special Slot? There are SO many incredible special sized characters out there - it would be awesome to choose who might come next!

A: I like the idea of the competition so would choose to do it again for an extension but not for a special I’m afraid.

Q: Is there a chance we will see some of Marvel's more esoteric creations in the next extension? Rawhide Kid, Two Gun Kid, Night Nurse, Werewolf by Night, Squirrel Girl, Killraven or Howard the Duck? Or will we be sticking to the more mainstream super-powered community?

A: All are welcome in my eyes but really I think it’s up to you guys and there is some strong debate on these characters – especially the Duck.

Q: I look forward to seeing it (Odin) as an exclusive preview at the Kapow Comic Con in April. Which is kind of my question too, will you be there?

A: I will be at Kapow but I don’t think Eaglemoss will be doing a stand so if a preview of Odin is there, it will be on a Diamond Previews stand.

Q: It seems like a gamble to release a huge resin/lead dog, but can we please get confirmation on Lockjaw.

A: Not ruling him out but he’s not planned for this year.

Q: What are your thoughts on classic characters versus popular modern characters? I ask because we don't see a lot of modern characters, but some like the Hood or Wiccan are highly recognizable to any Marvel fan and I think should have a place. Is it more of a gamble with newer characters?

A: As you all know from the debate here and on the messageboards, there’s a mix of collectors, so I think it is important to make sure we cover all the bases and have a good mix of both.

General Blurp about other Collections:

I’ve seen some of the comments about new collections and thought it best to make a quick comment. I think the fact that we are in a position to offer more DC and Marvel products is great, and if we don’t work on these projects one of our competitors will and personally I think our collections are of higher quality to some others I’ve seen.

While the answers weren't always to my liking, this was a briliant post. You not only tackled our questions, Rich, you answered loads of them. Thank you.

P.S. Blackheart looks like he walked off the comic page. Phenomenal sculpt.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Thanks Rich, very interesting reading.
At least that's an end to the multipack debate.
Sorry to hear your not convinced on the generics idea, but you may yet be :)
Blackheart is epic brought to mind how great a Wendigo might look in this here collection :)
excellent update

Blackheart looks incredible, really looking forward to getting him. Thanks for answering the questions it was a great update this week.
P.S, I know he leads to a lot of debate but we still need Howard The Duck in the collection, he is a classic marvel character after all. I know he would look odd next to the other characters in the collection but he looks odd next to them in the comics so no problem there really. And Detective Chimp in the DC collection turned out pretty cool.

Blackheart looks great, glad to see the spines have been kept.

Thanks for answering the many many mnay questions.

As for generic characters....bring them on!!! If I can get some Hellfire club drones or AIM agents on my display them I'm all for it.

mighty_marvel said...

suspected it, but disappointing to hear its likely we're only getting 4 specials this year. hopefully we'll get 6 specials next year to even it out.

awesome to hear a further extension is looking promising. there's definitely some big omissions from the collection. so looking forward to the announcement, and hopefully at least another 5 after it ;)

a double pack of regular figs should be tried at least once. if it doesn't work, ok we don't get any more, but it's a chance worth taking in my opinion. also, giving us northstar and aurora in one go, and then shaman in the extension, would complete alpha flight and we can finally get on to other x-men ally teams like the starjammers.

A question for everyone else on this blog. It seems Eaglemoss is finding their bottom-line squeezed because of rising costs. So, if it meant another 100 or 200 issues that otherwise wouldn't be published, I'd whole-heartedly support a price increase to £6.99, or even £7.50.

For me, it was after issue 100 the collection became really interesting. I already have dozens of figures of Marvel's mainstream characters (via ToyBiz, Bowen, Legends etc). But to the best of my knowledge, figures such as Ikarus, Quasar, Puppet Master have never before made it off the printed page. After issue 200, we'll be getting more of these niche figures, so my interest level will rise further. If £6.99 is what it take, Rich, I'll still be with you!

mighty_marvel said...

i'd pay another £1 or so per figure if it meant the collection would definitely reach #300

Robert said...

Yep, I'd pay more, too.

And as for generics, I'd buy at least three or four Hydra goons, Guardsmen, Skrulls and Badoon warriors to make up for the folk not interested!

mighty_marvel said...

i'd buy generic units. but only one of each. i know there are some who'd buy multiples though. do think it's a little early for generic units though. we need the leaders and main named characters of teams before we get the henchmen.

Robert said...

I think it's time for an A.I.M. technician and a Hydra agent if we get a further extension. Certainly, I'd welcome them more than most of the recent and upcoming figures like Silver Sable, Typhoid Mary, Marvel Girl and the Prowler (and I will buy some of these named characters).

Disappointed that the suggestion of a Warriors Three triple-pack is a non-starter. That means we'd have to get Fandrall and Hogun as regulars (I'm guessing that's unlikely to happen) and Volstagg as a special (which would probably cause apoplexy for a lot of people given how coveted the specials slots are). In other words, we probably won't ever see the Warriors Three.

AVENGERS -87 said...

Northstar and Aurora in regular , in the new extension ? For Fandrall , Hogun , Bulldozzer , Thunderball and Piledriver , it's certainly , it's regular or nothing. Generic Characters : no Thanks

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

If paying one extra pound per fig ensured another extension , i would pay without complaint, Six years in and not a price increase really is unbeleivable.
Put me down fer 3 AIM techs, 4 Hydras and a pair of Badoon.
Robert if you ask Deadpool nicely, i'm sure his genius like modding skills could transform Blob into a very impressive Volstagg. It's probably your last best hope.

Robert said...

Thanks for the advice, Ted. In the meantime, I'm off to check if the Superhero Squad has a Volstagg...

deamon said...

Blackheart looks great, for sure I will buy him. Can we see preview of Magik next time?
We all will pay one pound more, but EM please don't stop CMFC before #400 and we want more double-packs. Northstar was confirmed so long ago, if this is problem to give us twins, then give him in next extension. 4 specials is not enough, we want 5. Not Lockjaw this year, so Thundra or Terrax please.

Gremlin said...

I would happily pay an extra £1 per figure if it meant more extensions.

LAWay said...

I can see where the design came from now for Odin, but still, I dont like the colour scheme, but since thats the costume you chose, thats the colour he has to be. Perhaps he would benefit having that gold strip on his chest as there is just too much blue.

Seems like multipacks are a definite no-go. I dont have an issue with this personally. The Warriors 3 should be released seperate. And just release Northstar and Aurora seperate too. No point in having one doublepack if its going to be so much hassle. We never had a Fantastic 4 pack, or Heroes for Hire, so it just seems pointless doing these extra things for lesser characters.

I can understand not wanting to put out too many products. The main issue was whats happening with DC, the better sculpts, the subset, the batmobile collection, Marvel fans just wanted some sort of balance. This issue isn't really addressed...unless its just swept under with the price issue.

Generic units, i cant see why they wouldnt see. They have been done for marvel select, marvel legends and marvel universe, all a more expensive product than the CMFC. And there is more risk for them because there are no subscribers. EM is guaranteed subscribers getting them, and the crazzies like Robert who'll buy multiples. Although the warning is, said collections I have mentioned, the unit figures are the ones warming pegs.

Does £1 really make a difference? Alot are happy to pay the extra, especially if it reaps the benefits of better sculpts, paintjobs and potential spin off collections like DC have had. But are you really saying that £1 makes the difference THAT much? If at this stage you are worried about certain characters and whether they would sell, does that spell a bad sign for this collection? 'Everyone' says they love these characters never been made before, so surely the risk is less if they are all keeping their word and buying, right?

No-one NEEDS the duck, who is only well known for being an awful blotch on marvel's history.

I will be at the kapow comic con, looking forward to any previews if I see them. Promotion is surely good, whoever is doing it.

No denying EM make quality products, which wasnt the issue. More so that if the money is there to go into these products that are not even guaranteed to capture the amount of fans the CMFC, why isnt more money being spent on this actual collection?

These answers havent revealed that much, apart from dont expect any doublepacks, multi-packs, subsets or anything special for the collection. Because they havent changed the price by £1 in 6 years, they cant afford any additional top-ups, but can make several different DC and Marvel related products.

Robert said...

I'm with Leigh in thinking generics will sell as they feature in other collections. (Then again, I am crazy.) Even the Super Hero Squad (that one's for you, Ted!) and the Mini-Mates have them! (Hydra agents, Kree soldier, A.I.M. technician, etc.)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

mini mates??? are they for the smaller gentleman?

Robert said...

What a brainwave, Ted! That's a market as yet untapped by Marvel! You could have messages printed on them like "Meet my Super Soldier!"

CGJ said...

Blackheart looks fantastic. Kind of what I was expecting with the multi-packs but I won't lose any sleep over it as long as the extensions keep coming.

Another yes for a price rise from me. Seems a strange thing to ask for but this collection won't come around again in my lifetime so I would rather it was carried through to a proper (and distant) conclusion.

Wear an 'I am Eaglemoss Rich' tshirt at Kapow and I might buy you a pint. Although, if Blink was your fault, maybe not....

'No-one NEEDS the duck, who is only well known for being an awful blotch on marvel's history.'

I don't often take offence to people's personal views on this blog, but this statement is UTTER RUBBISH!...and only goes to prove once again what a narrow and limited knowledge you have of the MU Leigh!.
HtD is one of the last remaining TRUELY Classic and historic Marvel characters yet to be made. The comic was one of the most ground-breaking achievements in Comics period. He is far, far more deserving than the umpteen flavour-of-the-month Young X-Men etc. characters that we are bleated about endlessly on here. He may not be your personal choice, but he is essential to a lot of collectors, and is more than deserving of his place in this Set.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Just take a deep breath Bob, Gerbers HTD, is as deserving as any in this collection, Hisseries is stuff of legend it garnered worldwide press coverage.....but hey what about that Silver Sable ..wow stunningly pish...let's have more of those and cancel at 200

Robert said...

On the subject of "truly classic and historic" characters yet to be made, the one who springs to mind for me is Gwen Stacy. A lot of people date the end of the Silver Age to her death. If that doesn't qualify as "historic", I don't know what does...

mighty_marvel said...

robert!!!!! what have you done????? you'll have the civvie haters out in force.

Mighty Marvel, your open-mindedness is a breath of fresh air. Variants, generics, civilians, even ducks, are all part of the MU and should be considered as potential figurines.

P.S. Belated thanks to Bagman for sending me photos of the chess set. If Gwen, MJ, Franklin and others can be part of other collections - even the new Marvel chess sets - why are they verboten to so many CMFC collectors?

LAWay said...

bah whatever bd. narrow minded just because I dont like the duck character? A character that was, is a joke? Whose comic titles got repeatedly cancelled? Who appearances have notched up mainly from stupid cameos to highlight the stupid nature of the character, mainly pinpointing the joke of how stupid the character is in the marvel world.

Maybe I am just misguided and need informing as to why he is such a pivotal and important character in marvel's history, despite being one of their oldest character that had their own title, has very little impact on the marvel universe as a whole.

Of course, its just my opinion and what I have read in the comic titles I read. I simply said the collection doesnt need him, didnt say he doesnt deserve it. Its just as narrow minded saying any new xmen characters dont deserve it, especially if it can be argued that they have had more success in a shorter amount of time.

Dont want to fall out over silly things like that, its all personal views and wants. If they make howard, then they make spider-ham, or doop...and its just a waste of lead on superheroes they could make.

For the 4 Special , I hope Thundra

Leigh,
1.You've got to understand the joke to get the joke.
2. It's not just about 'Super-heroes' is it? (don't say it in the title)
3. Not saying that Young X-Man 'Z' shouldn't be made, just that the vast majority of ones they haven't been yet have NOTHING like the history and resonance in the MU as Howard has.

Still, what do I know...just been collecting comics for nearly 40 years and still regularly get 4 or 5 a week....

Thanks for the update Rich, disappointed about the multi-packs though, that means my G.O.T.G.(original) Multi Mega christmas special wont be coming.
I'm suprised the price of the collection has stayed the same for so long, considering everything else seems too go up in cost on a weekly basis(or is that just me).
Definetly up for the idea of producing Generics, but would we see one static pose in them or would people prefer multiple poses?
That way the collectors who only want one have a choice and those that will buy many are happy too, i suppose it all comes back to production costs.
Never seen a character on here divide people like H.T.D.,looking forward to the pro and con debates too come!!!.

MANY THANKS RICH
for taking the time to answer our questions. Great post.

BLACKHEART is superb. The greatness of the CMFC - the fact that Marvel characters come off the comic book page and become awesome sculpts.

PRICE INCREASE / CMFC FOREVER! I'm thrilled to think that EM can give us more and more of these amazing figurines, and that's why I fully support a price increase if it means the collection can continue its exploration of the MU.

MARVEL SUBSETS - POSSIBILITIES.
I still think that we need subsets in order that we can cover all the characters we want in a reasonable amount of time. Rich's post seemed to indicate there is a possibility for Marvel subsets, so long as they do not run in parallel with other subsets and saturate the market.

MINI SUBSETS / eg. ASGARD
Seeing that multi-packs are no go, I suggest that the Warriors Three could be made as a mini subset dedicated to Asgard. One figure every 14 days, to include the Warriors Three, Hela and Skurge for example. Mini subsets can work well as an alternative to specials and double packs.

STRONG FAN BASE. It seems to me that the CMFC has a solid fan base, and many of us are ready to commit hundreds more figurines! In fact, fans like me would see it as a dream come true. I want as many characters as possible. But with so many I want, I also want them at a faster pace. I hope that the EM boardroom will see that they can rely on our passion and commitment, and therefore they can safely experiment with some CMFC subsets. There are all indications that they would be a success.

Long live the CMFC.

Hi everyone. I've been a long time follower of this blog and read many of the comments. This is my first time posting and I just want to say, as a person from NYC, I would gladly pay the extra £1-2 equivalent in US dollars as long as we get quality sculpts and see this collection reach legendary status (can you think of another collection of marvel universe characters as diverse, complete and as beautifully made as CMFC? No.). Ever since I was exposed to these figurines per chance at a comic book store last summer I've been obsessed with this collection and I have snatched up every single one from the first! This is a dream come true for me and I'm sure many other Marvel fans. I've always wanted to be able collect miniature figurines such as these on a grand scale, so please bring on #250, #300 or beyond! :0) Cheerios!

Thanks for taking the time to answer all of our questions Rich and a big SV exclusive man hug to all my buddies on here, I am in a very happy and hugging mood and thought I would share the love.

Just looked at the most popular twenty list posted by Tomas - thanks, by the way - and while there are some characters I'm desperate to get like Gamora and U.S.Agent, I'm disappointed that nearly half are mutants. As I don't read the X-books, I barely know these characters and have no interest in them. In other words, if that was the extension list there's an incredible eight characters on the list I won't buy. That is way more than any other extension up to now. (And it may be nine if Moonstone is in her modern outfit, which I suspect is likely.) I know, this was a democratic vote and I'm being selfish. From a personal point of view, it's a pity we're not getting Ikabodcrane's list. I'd but sixteen of his twenty, which is nearer my normal buying percentage.

P.S. Adam, after remembering the mess that Eaglemoss usually make with their women, I respectfully withdraw my suggestion of a Gwen Stacy civilian figurine.

P.P.S. A big welcome to Ken.

Generics:
I would really like some generics depending on which ones. I think everyone can agree that AIM and HYDRA should have their place, but the others are a bit of a mixed bag. Personally, I'd love a badoon, but have zero interest in a Hellfire Club drone. ...basically saying hat the first two are definites, but not sure after that.

The main thing to keep in mind with generics is to make sure their release dates are spread out and not out at the time of a Mega Special or something expensive. This increases the likelihood of people buying multiple. (That's also my main reason for not having a Generics Subset, as it greatly lessens the chances of buying multiple.)

Howard the Duck:
I think the Top 20 speaks for itself. In that poll, people are only allowed to vote for 10 characters and they gave one to the duck.

You'll also notice that the people against Howard are a very adamant, few people. Its always the same vocal posters nay-saying, so maybe a proper vote is in order.

Civilians:
I don't want to start getting Aunt May and Foggy Nelson, but I do feel that if a character can produce a good, interesting sculpt, and has the history and importance in Marvel, they deserve a figurine. Be them civilian, animal, character from a comedy series, generic henchmen, etc.

Thing is, there aren't too many civilians with the importance that would also make a neat figurine (and to get a civilian in the collection, they have to be a BIG name.) J. Jonah Jameson does this, and I feel Mary Jane would too. Depending on your stance on civilian vs opponent, General Ross should be considered. And though I hate the character, Rick Jones for his extensive history. But that may be it...

Robert said...

On the subject of civilians, I would also like to see the alter-egos of a handful of the A-listers one day...

deamon said...

As for civilians I would buy Mary Jane Watson. Don't know we can count General Ross and William Stryker as civilians, but I would buy them too.
Northstar and Aurora in one extension doesn't work for me. We still don't have leaders of Starjammers (Corsair), Morlocks (Callisto), Hellfire Club (Sebastian Shaw) or Acolytes (Fabian Cortez), so one of them in Aurora place.

LAWay said...

Maybe there should be a special poll to see what collectors who dont subscribe or buy every issue.

We all know subscribers get everything, and some collectors buy everything, so while they have want lists, its more irrelevant since they are more likely to get anything anyway.

So it would be cool to see a list of characters that would definitely sell. People say the collection is getting better with the characters we are getting, so there shouldnt be many complaints but still are. I dont know how you can regulate such a poll, but would be interesting to see these opinions and lists.

deamon said...

And how would you check that voter isn't subscriber? Only EM can do poll like that, but can you imagine how big work that would be to do? Count customers from UK, USA, France, Poland, Spain, Italy and check which aren't subscribers.

LAWay said...

I know logistically you cant do it.

What I was hoping for was just honesty on the blog, thats all. If you dont buy every figurine, then show lists or 20 of who you would buy. Not asking for EM to do anything, just asking for honest collectors just to see how they would buy.

non-powered characters - i'd really like MJ one day, and jarvis to go with the avengers. but i don't think these stand a realistic chance of coming any time soon.
the main 2 that have got to stand a chance reasonably soon in their non-powered forms are rick jones and general ross. i know they have powered forms now, but their original forms are how they are best known and how they have had most impact on the MU. i think ross in particular could make an amazing fig in his full military uniform.

mighty_marvel said...

if we don't get northstar and aurora as a double pack, which i still think there is hope for, it is likely that northstar will be reinstated to the 161 - 180 lineup with one figure dropping into 181 - 200. and aurora will get a 181 - 200 spot. so they won't both technically appear in one extension.

I'm not subscriber and I don't buy every figurines, how would you prove it? I can give my TOP 20, but that's not fair to other fans, when I will give 15 x-characters per extension. Disappointing to hear the possibilty of another year without Lockjaw, but good to know an extension looks likely.

That forum top twenty list is typically horrible, so I hope EM treat swathes of it with the contempt it deserves.

Robert said...

Adam, I kind of assume that my ideas will find little support on here now! Still, I like the notion of a Tony Stark standing next to Iron Man, Dr. Don next to Thor and a few others. They are as much part of the MU as anyone and are classic characters with thousands of appearances. To be honest, I think it's odd to only see the MU in terms of the costumed characters. Given the choice between, say, Silver Sable and Peter Parker, I wouldn't hesitate to vote for the nerdy bookworm.

pirate adam said...

i know i'll get shot down for this...but...for me the Marvel Universe is all about the hero's and villains. how many comics would a nerdy bookworm student or a drunk billionaire or a crippled doctor or a school of stupid teens sell?? not many. i know civies and alter egos have there parts to play but for me they are very minimal and IMO should be swerved along with DUCKS!!

deamon said...

So is Lockjaw a hero? He's a dog. People want dog, people want duck, you have to agree with their opinion. Dog is in TOP 10 most wanted specials and duck is in TOP 10 most wanted regulars. There aren't any civilians right now in TOP of the lists, so only EM will decide we will have any civilian in next extension.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hell i'd take Ted Sallis over Silver Sable ;)

Robert said...

Not that I want to shoot at anyone, and certainly not everyone's favourite pirate, but a big part of Marvel's success has been the soap opera personal lives of the characters. Stan Lee completely rewrote the book on heroes when he created a teenage bookworm who can't pay the rent. You also have other important storylines like Starks' alcoholism. Yep, can't argue that the heroes come first but how anyone can talk about the MU and not spend a lot of time talking about the alter egos is, well, sorry if this sounds rude, utterly beyond me.

Oh, and we should have had Lockjaw yonks ago. Instead we get yet another mutant like Omega Red or Blob or Sauron.

pirate adam said...

it's ok Roberto, if people agreed on everything the world would be a boring place.

Yes to Lockjaw

and i think i'm 5th or 6th on the fave Pirate list behind Jack, Barbosa, Will, The Keira Knightly one the Monkey and the 2 stupid ones.

incidently i would take Sue Storms Hoover over any more X-men (except Onslaught)

No doubt there are some very interesting civvies, but this aint a comic it's a figurine collection.A skinny nerd does not an interesting figurine make,
There are parts of the great MU that have been untouched or barely represented in the collection.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before i would consider civvies, i would hope to see, Marvel western ,horror, GOTG and Golden age characters

Blackheart looks awesome :) Thanks for the preview!

Too bad about the double pack. I just hope Misty Knight and Colleen Wing stands a chance somehow of getting in sooner rather than later!

As for specials, I really hope Strong guy, Lockjaw and Mojo stands a good chance! They are my top 3 specials! Especially Strong guy! Its looking pretty promising for Wolfsbane's inclusion in the next extansion, so i'm really hoping for Strong guy to complete the first Peter David's x-factor line-up back in the 90's! Plus, Strong guy would look really cool as a lead!

I'm also happy about the recent vs older characters! To have a good mix up! Because Jessica Jones, is to me, my most wanted character (now that Siryn is in)

So can't wait for another extansion! This collection keeps getting better and better :)

Jacadoo said...

Having been unfortunate enough to start collecting the cursed LOTR collection – I cancelled, why – because this collection descended into third Ork from the left territory or in other words probably the worst case of padding since the padding of a really big padded person……

I think Rich is playing games with us at the moment – but this could be for two reasons, ONE: he wants to continually gauge our hunger or worse TWO: Marvel is really getting tight with their licences (this is true) and very worse case could curtail the collection.

There has to be a reason why the not as popular DC collection (in comic sales terms) are getting all the love – sub-sets etc????

So with worse case in mind I would rather hold off the generics for now and close out some of the teams and notable absentees such as the Warriors Three, Stingray etc.

I do feel heartened however of the mention of 2000AD and I’m not afraid to admit along with my Marvel collection, my 2000AD were right there as well. My only concern would be licensing again, as I know Citadel do much of the line up for gaming – I thing in 25mm scale.

Anyway off my soap box and I have just received an email my Sideshow Exclusive Edition NightCrawler has been despatched and on its merry way!!!!!

Robert I defiantly promise the images as soon as it lands and is displayed.

Jacadoo said...

Back on soap box - you can keep all civiliand and the Duck as well.

Just got no love for these at all.

Only civilian who should be considered?

The man himself Stan Lee - but only as a seminal piece issue 500!!

Robert said...

Jacadoo, I'm not sure I understood "Robert I defiantly promise the images as soon as it lands and is displayed." Nightcrawler? Or are you referring to something my tired old noggin has forgotten..?

As for Stan, regular is not enough: he should be a MEGA SPECIAL!

P.S. We should also do regular figures of real life civilians like Jack, Steve, Sal Buscema, Ross Andru, etc.!

LAWay said...

I thought Marvel dominate the comic sales? Or did you mean the DC collection outsells marvel?

If it was a case of marvel being worried, surely they would do what they usually do with merchandise and issue more spider-men, iron men and wolverines.

As for civvies, some would be good, but not many have an iconic look to make good figurines. I can see peter parker, mary jan and gwen stacy, but thats about it, so they would be kinda out of place. There was a statue line that did the heroes next to their secret identities and i dont think it did well.

As for X specials with blob, sauron and omega red, they are pretty big name characters anyway, its not the fact that they are x-related. No real complaints here. Personally I'd like to see MODOK before we see Lockjaw.

I cant see stan lee being a figurine either. He doesnt own marvel and while he is doing his own thing nowadays i'd imagine marvel want to keep away from glorifying him any further. Definitely no other creator needs a figurine. Stan had a charisma and a unique eccentric look to him that made him a character. No one else in marvel really had this.

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

Hey Robert, they could go one better and make us into figurines....Me make "bloggers in lead" blog to illustrate.....

how about an end of the collection special , not now though please but long in the future. The special would be stan lee patting howard the duck on the head. I'm not joking either. I think that would look amazing and it would look like they were both saying thanks to all our fans , our job is done now !!

Thor8 said...

Thanks for taking the time to answer many of the questions asked,Rich, but I couldn't help noticing that "The Secret Project" inquiry was left unanswered. Was this just an oversight on your part,or are you just avoiding giving us an answer?

Some of your other answers were a Little vague also. You said it's not likely we'll get triple packs because double packs have not done too well so far,but if you come to think of it,we have only gotten two double pack thus far and the choices (pardon my sincerity) have not been the best of choices.

1st double pack: A guy in a wheel chair and an alien.
2nd double pack: an almost naked guy with a big cat.

Yes I'm aware of whom these characters are,but basically that's how many people see them. They are hardly awe inspiring characters with eye catching uniforms in imposing posture. If you decide to go with the Northstar and Aurora double pack I'm pretty sure you'll see a significant difference in sales. Oh I just remembered we also got Sasquatch and Puck which I believe to have been quite good and I imagine it sold way better than the previous two. But as LAway mentions in one of his posts,if it,s going to cause so much debate and trouble, just forget it.

No comment on the Blackheart figurine,and since we won't be getting any double or triple packs anytime soon then for next extension I would like to see;

Swordsman
Mantis
Stingray
Fandral
Hogun
Swordsman
Attuma
White Tiger
Starfox
USAgent
Swordsman
Princess Python
Moonstone
Shaman
Collector
Swordsman
Tarantula
Molten Man
Mimic
Jackal
Swordsman

Specials & Megas:

Volstagg
Mangog
Destroyer
Ulik
Executioner
Super Adaptoid
Titanium Man
Atlas
Goliath
Orka

And if you make generics;

Aim Technician
Hydra Agent
Sons Of Serpent Soldier
The Hand Ninja

Can you imagine a Modok Mega flanked by 5 or 6 Aim Techs?,or Viper with an escort of Hydra agents? or Electra facing the Avengers with a small army of the hand assassins? Will they sell? I'll bet my complete Thor collection they would.

Thor8 said...

That's a pretty curios idea you've got there MT,and it really isn't as crazy or bad as it seems at first glance, but would it sell?

LAWay said...

Stan Lee didnt created Howard the Duck, so the idea is crazy talk. Recreate the amazing fantasy comic cover with spiderman holding stan lee instead of that random guy (i know there was a cover of this but i dont know what series it was in).

Also, finished up an Aurora picture after all this aurora talk. http://lawaycartoons.blogspot.com/2011/04/aurora.html

Sure, I drew it a year ago, but finally finished it.

tbh I dont see the issue releasing them as a special. They would be nearly the same price as one, and dont palm us off with expenses. 5.99+5.99. If anything, it could be done even cheaper, but lets give you the benefit of the doubt here. 11.99 for the double pack and it will sell. Its practically the ONLY double pack people have actually asked for, nay, demanded. Let them take a special slot, they would sell better than lockjaw anyway.

And if you are that worried still, just release them in one extension, one after the other. What is the big problem?!

Robert said...

As the old saying goes, "Behind every great man, is a great woman", so as well as the creators, we should also get figurines of their wives/ girlfriends, too. You know, Joanie Lee, Roz Kirby, the many wives of Roy the Boy, Weezie Simsonson, and so on.

And Stan used to have a dog. He called it Excelsior.

And the dog had puppies...

P.S. To the folk like Leigh who thought I was serious with my earlier post about creator figurines, I was indulging in a bit of self-mockery over the fact no one likes my ideas. I was going to keep this going for a few days but then I saw the post about Stan and Howard and realised that I really can't compete in the daftness stakes...

The civilian debate has returned and I'd back a few civvies in the collection. I did champion their inclusion many blogs ago and had a tumbleweed moment, but now there's at least two of us looking for a MJ and Gwen statue.
Of course, this could lead to madness. Millie the Model figures showing off all the different cover fashions for the her entire comic run anyone?

Happy Sunday.

No1) Blackheart looks awesome, I want him now.
No2) Shame about Lockjaw, would have loved to see him this year.
No3) Although not a fan of Howard I think it's important to have him in the collection, the Duck is a relevant square in the vast Marvel patchwork and deserves his place.
No4) I don't want generics, we need to fill the collection with more characters before it ends, and there are a lot of great characters out there still.
No5) An Asgardian subset would be fantastic.
No6) Without Stan the Man, we wouldn't even be having this conversation, I would love a sculpt of him. Nuff Said.

They've just started an unofficial poll over on the SHFF on Generic Characters.
Possible 3 answers.
1. Want them in the regular line-up.
2. Want them in a Sub-Set.
3. Not want them at all.

So far it's very even- virtually a 1/3 of the vote to each.

I went with the first option. I don't want many generic characters, but I would certainly put both a generic Hydra and AIM Agent into the collection long before some of the C- Z graders that we could possibly have instead.
To me these two are such extremely iconic representatives of Marvel history, that the collection wouldn't be 'Classic' without them.
(We obviously need MODOK and Baron Strucker too!!-that goes without saying...)

RONIN in the CMFC
Has this character gone off the radar just because we got Clint Barton as Hawkeye? I hope not. The Ronin costume design is awesome and would make an amazing figurine. Many people have been behind the mask of Ronin, not just Clint Barton, so it would not be a redo or costume variant case. In my opinion, Ronin deserves to be in the CMFC. And precisely because more people have been Ronin, the concept is intriguing and the magazine would make a good read.

Robert said...

Bob, if one third have voted for each option that still equates to two-thirds DO want them. Which is great news. Never thought we'd get a clear majority.

As for Blake's suggestion of Ronin, no thanks. I only know the character through the Bendis storyline, which didn't make a lick of sense. Since when did Clint Barton become a martial artist?

LAWay said...

I back KE for Ronin, great design, and the wearer of the costume isn't Clint any more so there is every reason the character should be made. Otherwise you could just as well say we shouldnt have had ant-man because we had pym as yellow jacket.

ANd we are constantly talking about the balance of modern and old characters. There is no real balance, its mainly old characters. So give new fans this want, the guise of Ronin was a prominent character in the avengers.

As for the vote for generics, i can see it winning, but lets be honest, how many do we want to see? I think we only really need 3 or 4 generic henchmen that really have an iconic look and well known marvel history that isn't exclusively contained in a single title.

But generics would be low on my want list, i could go another couple of extensions before seeing them.

Anonymous said...

i'm all in favour for these a.i.m dooberies and hydra wotnots but can we also get the bank teller who gets robbed quite often by spidey villains also into this collection please ? Oh and we must have an aunt may armed with a rolling pin , and lets not forget to add a policeman or a security guard too while we're at it.

Anonymous said...

in all seriousness though , i would like to see 1 minor league character or civillian among each future extension now. A.i.m tech , hydra agent , kree soldier , aunt may , mary jane , general thunderbolt ross , rick jones , etc.

Ken said...

As a devoted, even obsessed fan of the CMFC, I would be more than happy to collect "civilian" characters such as Aunt May, Mary Jane etc or generic characters (just one of each though to complete my collection). I'm dead set in having the ENTIRE collection as my very own :0) However, I would still prefer superheroes/villains over any generic character. Viva la CMFC! I pray it goes on strong well past #250 :0)

Robert said...

I don't know if some people think that saying 'yes' to generic characters will open the floodgates to these type of characters. If so, that's not the case. My suggested generics list number an entirely manageable four.

1. Hydra agent.
2. A.I.M. technician.
3. Guardsman/ Vault Guardsman.
4. Kree Warrior (original green Captain Marvel costume).

There may also be calls for a Hand assassin and a few alien races like the Brood, Skrulls and Badoon. Even then, it's hardly a long list.

LAWay said...

All honesty i would probably only be interested in a hydra agent and a kree soldier.

Hey, here's a thought.

The update was on April Fool's, and yet, trusting as we are, we never questioned a single topic discussed? Could something have been a red herring?

Thor8 said...

My line of thinking goes along the same path as Robert's. We don't really need a truckload of generic henchmen. I was thinking more of those criminal organizations that are just as iconic in the MU as any other Marvel villain or hero.I believe AIM and Hydra are must haves, then there are a few others like the Hand and Sons of The Serpent whom might be added. I prefer getting one per extension, and by this I mean that we should get just one in any particular extension,I'm not saying one in EVERY extension, they shouldn't be left to be included too far down the road because then we'll wind up getting all the generics,Z-class,and rejects all together in the last two or three extensions.

Robert said...

Yep, I'm with you, Thor8, one per extension. Same as we will hopefully get one Asgardian per extension (although more would be lovely!) as that seems to be an emerging pattern. What do collectors think are the priority? In any new extension I'd be looking at one Asgardian, one generic, another Alpha Flighter (since double packs seem unlikely), at least two/ three Avengers (Swordsman, Mantis, U.S.Agent or Stingray), a few Spidey and FF characters, the usual handful of X-Men, maybe one or two MK (Jigsaw perhaps)...

Thor8 said...

I think giving us a wide variety of characters from across the whole Mu per extension would be excellent. That way there would get a little of everything and most people will be happy and practically no one would feel left out.

the update was well after 12pm though. isn't april fool's supposed to stop at noon?

i think an extension should be made up roughly like this

2 x-men (1 male, 1 female)
2 x-men villains (1 male, 1 female)
1 x-men ally (alpha flight/starjammer etc)
2 avengers (1 male, 1 female)
2 avengers villains (1 male, 1 female)
1 young avenger
1 asgardian
2 spiderman (1 ally, 1 villain)
2 fantastic 4 (1 ally, 1 villain)
2 cosmics (1 male, 1 female)
3 marvel knights

Very fair list, MM. Not sure who the three MK characters would be, though. Would that 'family' also include the horror characters that the likes of Ted have been asking for? And only two Avengers and one must be male? Tough call! Mantis and Swordsman spring to mind, with at least another trio of very strong and popular candidates. One hundred and eighty characters in and we can still think of loads of characters. I tell you, this collection will run and run.

marrinasmallwood said...

Hi, i normally write in the forum but Rich's updated was very interesting so i'll give my comment here too:
I am in the position of wanting characters that have never been made on 3-D. I collect Marvel in general and love my Howie Duckie (from Marvel Legends) and Lockjaw (from mini-mates). I adore my Zabu (i have three now from different collections), and Lilandra to me was a-mazing.

Aurora and Northstar have enough history to be release on their own (and i'm sure is not only the pink brigade clamouring for them), so no biggie (BTW LAWAY, love the Aurora drawing, Can i have it on a t-shirt please?).
I thought multi-packs were a no-no since they really didn't work out in other characters collections. I like the Warriors Three and original GOTG but again i feel they have plenty of H-ry to make them on their own.
I cannot give a damm about civvies, but i do have MJ, Gwen, and JJJ from ML so i could be persuaded. Now someone like Jarvis i would just have to get just because of the shock and the daring of it all.
The new versus old characters, i refer about the "classic" nature of this collection. What does a classic makes? You decide.
Im an 80's fan (even if i think Dust or Sage are cool), but for my display purposes i'd love the whole Avengers, Defenders, X-Men, Alpha Flight and New Mutants groups, rather than new GOTG, Runaways (loved them thou), new Heroes for hire etc. etc.
Whatever the case i am delighted that this collection exists, and after getting my fav, Jocasta i say bring it on, i shall have it all.
PS: but yes, Marrina, Mantis, Satana and Lilith would make me weep with joy. (did i mention the 80's?)

Robert said...

Just googled the mini-mate Lockjaw. Had no idea there was one. The same series had a Silver Centurion Iron Man. Other series also have Hydra agents, A.I.M. technicians, Kree Captain Marvel and Guardsmen.

Six years in and I realise I'm buying the wrong collection! Anyone wanna swap?

mighty_marvel said...

yeah, i include the supernaturals/horror as part of MK. was thinking brother voodoo, clea and jigsaw personally.

Robert said...

Ah, righto, MM. I was struggling to think of three strong MK candidates without the horror characters. Forgot about supernaturals like Clea: excellent shout. (By the way, whatever happened to her? haha thanks very much marrinasmallwood. I aint really in the position of selling t-shirts, but i can put the design up on a cafepress website or just email you a file so you can iron on transfer it yourself.

I agree with alot of what you said. One problem about the 'classic' moniker is that EM ruined that idea when they started. Had they established 'classic' meant characters purely from the 70s, 80s, maybe stretching to the 90s, then the collection would be clearly defined. But instead they produced many characters created in the good ol days and made them in their most current costumes (much to alot of disappointment). Perhaps it was a conscious decision to get venom and deadpool collectors on board as well as new x-men fans, but how many characters are actually modern in this collection? Their appearances maybe, but not the characters themselves.

Also Rob, this is exactly what I was talking about. I've also been collecting minimates for years, such a diverse range of characters and costumes. How come you guys dont know about these things? The marvel legends/marvel universe/minimates are collectables, they are not toys, but it just happens that they are suited for a child market because they are plastic. Like I said all along, other collection have made a diverse cast of marvel characters along with the CMFC...and they have done so while including variant costumes and story arc specific variants.

You guys need to be collecting more marvel merchandise. :P

Robert said...

I own the Big Three from the Avengers in mini-mate form, Leigh. Have done since they first came out. I've always liked the mini-mates, they are cute as hell, I just didn't want to start another collection. As for saying that I need to collect more Marvel merchandise, I already spend silly amounts on Marvel! Even though I have just about stopped buying new Marvel comicbooks, I still spend the money on back issues so there's no saving. I really need to sort out the loft and take some photos so you can see how out-of-hand my hobby is. I can't move for comics and related items. I now look at the figurines and think about the money I've spent on them and, while I really like them, a big part of me thinks I really should have spent it on classic comicbooks...

Robert said...

Mitch, sorry I did not respond to your question. I've also asked for size-changers as specials, with Giant-Man my number one choice. However, any time this is brought up, the majority disagree and believe that valuable special slots should be used for characters who can only be done as specials. It is also opposed on the grounds that Giant-Man is Hank Pym, and we already have him as Yellowjacket (and Ant-Man in some eyes). While I can see their logic, I disagree due to Giant-Man's importance to the Avengers. In an effort to circumvent this, I use a Giant-Man from another collection.

mighty_marvel said...

i'd like atlas as a special. although he's a size changer, he's nearly always shown larger so it makes sense to sculpt him as a special. with the other size changers i'd be happy either way.

Robert said...

Ah! Mighty Marvel makes a great point!

If the size-changers are USUALLY shown larger than normal size, then they should be done as a special!

And I am fairly sure that Giant-Man - like Atlas - was generally larger than his natural height!

Hah ha! MM, you're a genius!

I had a spare 10 minutes this afternoon, so i took the opportunity to polish my monkey.
As fantastic as the Gorilla Grodd fig is .I really would like a Marvel monkey to keep him company, The Red Ghost and his trio of superpowered simians,or Gorrila Man from the Agents of Atlas would do nicely...or Cornelius, Dr Zaius and Urko from POTA.

Size matters
Personally I think that it would be utterly ludicrous to have Giant Man, Goliath or Atlas in standard size. They should be special.

Their giant size is the most distinctive trait, and they would look completely boring & anonymous in normal size.

They would be as silly & boring as if Bumblebee (Transformers) was only made in the shape of a car and not in its giant robot form, which is his truly iconic and most interesting form.

I want a size-changer, especially Giant Man or Goliath, and I want him special size. So what if we already have Hank Pym as Yellow Jacket. Surely if Spider-Man black costume was possible, then it should not be such an outrage to cover an iconic representation of a Marvel character who is famous for his many superheroic guises. Giant Man is awesome.

Not sure what happened above. I posted as usual, and my screenname got corrupt. It's Kirlian Eyes.

it's not all about the person behind the mask or inside the costume you know. It's about the character. Like robert said , we have yellow jacket + wasp , then we have wasp on her own and ant man. Why can't we get giant man as a mega special ? I'd love to buy one. Someone wanted a ronin but we have hawkeye. I'd buy ronin and a goliath mega special. I don't care about them being the same person. For me it's all about the look or the costume and for display purposes.

I'd like to get the marvel comics encyclopedia and all of the marvel masterworks but they are too expensive so i'll have to wait til i can afford them. Anyone know of any other great marvel or dc books that i should think of buying ?

You know, the more Stan Lee continues to create things, the lower his stock goes down.

He is releasing a cartoon called the Govenator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as some retired politician crime fighter with a lame terminator style cyber costume and tron bike, and it looks awful. I hope its an elaborate April Fool's joke, but its not even funny.

It makes me start questioning whether Stan Lee just threw alot of of brown stuff and saw what stuck...and just got lucky. It saddens me to say...I wish he'd retire and stop ruining his name.

The Stan Lee Universe is £20, Mad Thinker. Not sure if it's what you're looking for, although it will certainly be worth reading. I have some other books up the loft. When I have time later, I'll have a look and see what I can recommend. There was a combined text (by Roy Thomas)/ audio (by Stan) book a few years back that I really liked. Also, an archive book with reproduced artifacts. Both were about £20, too. Maybe these would be better for you. I'll get back to you tonight on this.

As for buying ALL the Masterworks, you can't be serious! Since 1988, I have spent somewhere in the region of £4000 on them. I and others can recommend a handful, if you want. They come in softcover versions that are cheaper than the hardbacks (obviously). Just remember that reading the encyclopedias is a bit like reading a newspaper report on a game rather than going to watch it!

"It makes me start questioning whether Stan Lee just threw alot of of brown stuff and saw what stuck...and just got lucky." Yeh, and Edison just got lucky with all his inventions, too. Leigh, that's the dumbest thing ever written on here - and that's going some. Go do some background reading, for goodness sake. Next thing you'll be telling us the world is flat.

Hi Robert,
I've also got that book with the audio commentary of Stan- it's called 'Stan Lee's Amazing Marvel Universe'. It still works- but don't forget to take the batteries out between plays- or you might go back to it and find Stan's words of wisdom lost forever thanks to the corrosive effects of battery acid!
I've got that other one you mentioned too- 'The Marvel Vault'- with all the repro bits 'n' pieces. Both excellent geek-fests! The first one I picked-up at one of those cheap book shops for a fiver. Always worth checking those places out for odd, quirky comic-related stuff.
Mad Thinker- if you're looking for the best examples of Classic Marvel History, then off the top of my head these Epics are essential Must-Reads:

X-MEN - Dark Phoenix Saga
Avengers - Kree/ Skrull War
- Korvac Saga
- Celestial Madonna Saga
- Avengers Forever
Daredevil- Elektra Saga
- Born Again
Iron Man - Armour Wars
Thor - The Walter Simonson years

These are top A-lister characters, but there are many other , perhaps even more acclaimed series with lesser-known characters that need to be checked-out eventually, such as:
- Jim Starlin's Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel and Dreadstar Epics.
- Panther's Rage from 'Jungle Action'.
- And of course, Howard The Duck himself- his truly unique and historic first series, written by Steve Gerber.

I'm sure the old geezer's on here will be able to recommend quite a few more to get stuck into as well.

Robert said...

Thanks, Bob, for saving me looking these books up. Alas, your tip for the Stan audio book came too late! Great as these are I still think MT should first think about comicbooks. Hard to improve on your list. (Really pleased you added Simonson's Thor. They're bringing out a special artist edition this summer which reproduces the art from two Bill story arcs at original size, in b&w. Might be expensive, though.) As for the Jungle Actions and Warlocks, they are high water marks for Marvel but not sure they are a great starting point for MT. Likewise, Avengers Forever. It can be enjoyed by anyone but it's so deep with history and past storylines, it can only be appreciated fully by real hardcore fans. I think something like the Avengers Defenders War is a better starter read. Still, you named some real timeless gems.

Might be an idea to buy some Essential volumes, as they're cheaper.

Regards, Another Old Geezer.

A quick idea i had, but i'm not entirely sure how easy it would be.

One thing, the only thing that annoys me about this collection is Galactus. I look across and he's tiny when he should be huge.

Is there any potential to have an almost Build-A-Figure Galactus have a piece of him each issue for an extra £1 that you can stick together with some strong glue. (same material as Blob so he is light?)

I thought it would be hard to pull off but a really neat idea. Any thoughts on this?

BobDiamond said...

Thanks Thor8, but I don't want to cause a ruckus ...so could I be Heimdall instead?
I always thought he was cool from right back in the day when I read a 'Tales of Asgard' story about him, drawn of course by 'The King' himself.
Super-hearing, super-sight and a cool helmet- what more does an Asgardian need??

thanks for the tips guys , i'll keep those in mind. But I like the look of secret wars , civil war , contest of champions , and six forgotten warriors. Any good ?

Thor8 said...

Okay BD you can be Heimdall, but that doesn't get PA off the hook that easy. I'm still considering booting him off the Rainbow bridge,or maybe even have him attend one of those Olympian get together's he despises so much.

BobDiamond said...

Mad Thinker,
'Secret Wars' and 'Civil War' are both very good- Secret Wars is a bit more fun and light-hearted.
'Contest of Champions' was OK when it came out (early 80s I think), but has not aged well- very dated I'm afraid. Don't bother with the later 90s 'Contest of Champions II'-totally forgettable.
I've not heard of of 'Six Forgotten Heroes'- is that Marvel?
Robert's suggestion of 'The Avengers/ Defenders War' is an excellent one. Classic Marvel at it's best.

BD (AKA Heimdall)

BobDiamond said...

'Six Forgotten Warriors'- sorry. However, still doesn't ring any bells!

BD

Robert said...

Secret Wars is rather dated with poor art by al Milgrom. Claremont takes himself and comicbooks too seriously to write something like Contest of Champions. A much better example - probably the best - of superheros battering lumps out of each other is the Avengers-Defenders War I mentioned. (The 1970s rule.) Civil War is excellent, highly recommended.

I googled Six Forgotten Heroes and all that came up is an episode of the spidey animated series from the '90s...

P.S. Where has Leigh gone after yesteday's 'episode'? Maybe there's no internet access at the sanitarium...?

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

I'm currently tracking down all the Curtis Magazine titles as it's a realistic collection that i could complete. They are absolute bargains, Some of the greatest art you'll ever lay yer peepers on by loads of Fillipinos you've never heard of. a good 75 or 100 page count and fair chance of beutiful women with their baps oot.
Surprisingly the lovely POTA mags seem to be the priciest. Lots of monkey lovers oot there obviously.

LAWay said...

I'd imagine a build a figure for the collection is impossible...and how big are you thinking? How would we put it together? I dont think superglue would be enough from warhammer experience.

Maybe they could produce a resin version with easier to assemble slots and glue can help, but then you have to be sure what the reaction is with superglue and the painted resin. So, I cant see it being a possibility, but it would be nice though.

Was my birthday so had the day off the net. A year older and wiser. The comment of Stan the Man throwing stuff to see what sticks was a joke, but come one, his recent works since he left marvel have been disasterous. And did you google/youtube 'governator'? I'll save you the hassle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw6J9OGSXpg

So as Stan the Man gets older, hopefully he gets wiser and realizes these ideas suck.

Thanks to all you guys who agree with me on the Giant Man/Goliath special or Mega Special. If memory serves from when I used to read the old comics, Galactus and The Watcher also have the ability to change their size. In any case, Hank Pym as Giant Man, was one of the founding members of the Avengers, and I think he would make a towering, awesome effect on our collections. Make a South African guy happy please :)

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

TED SCREAMS, "WHY SETTLE FOR MINCE WHEN YOU COULD HAVE STEAK???"
Giant Man would have to be done as a special to complete the original line up, i don't buy all this smegma about size changers being unworthy of special slots. By that reckoning the Hulk is a waste of a slot, perhaps instead of big and angry he should have been portrayed as slightly miffed and released at the same size as the Thing.
Why settle for an okay looking fig when you could have something truly spectacular, like wot Omega Red is ( no waste of a slot there?)

Barnabas said...

I'm up for shape changers being specials. HUGE Stature as the first Young Avengers figure.

As for the Stan debate. Maybe it just proves that as a creative team Marvel worked well. All the good ideas came from different people which just meshed together really well with Stan at the head of the gang.
Look at the Beatles. John and Paul were the driving force, at first, and the frission between them produced some great music. Once they went their seperate ways, John produced good stuff, but in my opinion, Paul went a bit naff.
So, I conclude, it's the time and the people with all their frenetic ideas that forged the greatness of early Marvel.

GIANT.........................................man. The clue is in the title!

pirate adam said...

so people want Goliath, Giant Man, Bill Foster, Atlas ect ect so they can be displayed with their respective teams showing of their powers. the problem is if your gonna have them as specials then they would have to be Galactus sized specials or its pointless, why would you want a Thanos or Colossus sized fig that is barely taller than the regular figs, thats just stupid and doesn't show them of as anything more than a large regular...so...they HAVE to be mega specials and i dont want to waste £18 on a character that can easily be done for £6

if any size changer deserved to be done as a mega special it should have been Pym and he wasn't so the others dont deserve it either

and yes Mitch, Galactus and Watcher can change their size to make them taller and smaller but the reason they're mega specials is because they start off at over 60ft, how many others do that?

and did i mention Rich said they wont be considered as specials

Miguel Angel Jiminez said...

You are absolutely spot on PA , Giant Man should be mega, You may not want him but that doesn't make him a waste of money, That's like a norse hater saying Odin is a waste of money, The sculptors are at the peak of their powers a mega GM would be incredible. 40 Benson & Hedges fer £14.00 now that's a waste of money.
Rich actually ruled out size changers as megas/specials??...oh dear...oh dear, oh dear. Reminds me of the guy at Decca records who didn't sign the Beatles because "guitar based bands were on their way out"
You are also correct when you say he could easily be done for sick squid, now that really would be a waste , a wasted opportunity.

LAWay said...

I agree, size changers should be megas, it would have been awesome. missed opportunity, put it was so early on in the collection. And because they wont revisit old characters because 'everyone' loves the more obscure characters and supporting characters, we may never get them.

I would much prefer another hank pym as a mega, would have been a lot better than most of the 'specials' that are only just slightly larger, but hunched over so it doesnt make any difference whatsoever.

I'd prefer getting the best characters from marvel done in the best way possible. Not for EM to learn as they go along and make the nobodies look better than the stars. (you know what I mean, supporting characters etc. )

Robert said...

You're spot on, Adam, when you point out that a special would be too small. Mega it is! (I don't remember Rich saying we wouldn't get size changers as specials but then I don't remember a lot of things.)

CGJ said...

Totally agree with Giant Man being a Mega and always have. Surely Rich should re-think putting the block on this idea as it would look great.

Now that Blob has been done as a Mega, a character that could easily have been done as a Special, (and if he appeared earlier in the collection he probably would have been), the status saved for 'Mega' Specials has been thrown out of the window.

Galactus, Watcher and Sentinel were three figs that couldn't be done to 'real' scale and so were done as Megas, but if that is now a moot point as Blob has been given Mega Special status, why not have Giant Man, Atlas or Goliath as a Mega?

For me, I want this collection to be looked back on as the definitive collection for Marvel fans and that means making the most of opportunities to make each figurine as good as it can possibly be. I'm glad Blob has been made as big as he has, but that means that all following characters should be given the same considerations.

I know money is tight and paying £6 rather than £18 is much more appealing, particularly if you are not bothered about the character, but think on this.

If Giant Man is made as a Mega and costs £18 that you can't afford, you can always save up and buy him a few months or years down the line. If he is made as a £6 regular, he will be a missed opportunity forevermore.

WELL PAINTED FEET, PLEASE!
I noticed that an increasing number of figurines have got an unfinished or patchy paint job on their feet. Or at least that's what I saw in stores.

I hate it when the feet are badly painted, eg. where the tip or the base of a foot is unpainted to the point that half foot is naked black lead. Or where blotches of paint have dripped around the sole.

Personally, I never buy figurines with sloppy paint on their feet. It's when feet are meticulously painted that the figurine looks like a beautiful mini masterpiece.

I like a small degree of variation and even imperfection, as it gives the 'hand painted' feel, which is charming. And hey, I know it's a £5.99 product. But I'm talking about seriously messed up paint work on the feet, which recently it's been frequent. I found that only 1 Quasar and 1 Batwoman were painted well, out of the dozens I checked in store. Like me, many people will not buy figurines with bad feet paint.

I thought I'd report the problem here for EM to take note, in case it becomes too frequent.

Ugh. That is awful looking. Pretty sure I hadn't see the painted Balder before, Tomas, although thanks for the link. Really pretty disappointed. Really, this is Drax all over again. Sometimes democracy just doesn't work because the majority can't be trusted: we got Maggie, the Americans got Ronald Raygun and later Bush junior, now the forum has given us Neo-Balder.

Hard to disagree with that Robert. It's interesting/frustrating to see how the two collections have dealt with the problem of differing eras. The DC collection decided with LoSH to stick with an era, and it should make a stunning display in time.

The CMFC went badly wrong with the decision to pick and choose through several decades, so, for example, the X Men, which should have been a standout part of the collection is a complete dog's dinner.

Now the latest glaring error in that policy is now here for all to see. A classic Thor, a Kirby Odin on the way, and a modern Balder to complete the non-look.

I'm sure in good time they will be joined by a Sex In The City Sif and a low carb Volstagg.

Word verication is "balwas".
